Re-read since I completely forgot what happened in this volume. And, my status was right—even with the craziness in the first chapter this story was kind of bland. Also all over the place. Basic premise: people who have lost limbs get prosthetics quickly and easily but a small percentage of those people become monsters with animal mascot heads called "Spiders." There's a team of people called Jackalope that kills these Spiders. The cast is huge and I have no idea who anyone really is or if I even like them. I continue only because I really liked Deadman Wonderland (well, the anime at least.) Bumped down to 2 stars from 3 and I hope the next volume is better.

Original review:
I totally expected this to be over-the-top after reading/watching Deadman Wonderland, but this was ... messed up. I wasn't expecting a lot of what happened, and that ending was ... damn. Messed up, I tell you.

One thing bothering me: did they even try to make Youkou look different from Ganta? I mean, seriously they're almost the same character model except for their hair color.

A little too graphic for me, but an interesting premise. However, I don't really like any of the characters, so I don't think I'll continue.

A seemingly normal world where medical technology has quickly advanced where they are able to transplant any human organ. Those behind this are called the Ame No Tori (Rain of Birds). But right after his birthday, where he lost everything the scheme behind human transplant final revealed. It all turns out to be a plot against humanity where the new technologies can take over the host body and thus making them into a killing machine. In order to beat these mascot killers, a task force called the Jackalope is set on annihilating them before they raise more havoc.

How is this first volume got a LOW RATING??? This is so fckingggg good. The first chapter is already that intense, definitely unforgettable and strong impression for a reader to keep reading.

The plot progressed very fast, like all of a sudden everything happened. This is the first manga where I need to check thoroughly every panel, the art is so pretty, and not to mention that all of the manga panels have some bit of information. So make sure you check it carefully.

This manga is action packed!! From the start until the end of vol 1 are full of bloody scenes. How did the mangaka manage to mix seinen and shounen so well in one manga??

The same creator of Deadman Wonderland, hearing that you do not have to hesitate to start reading this. Truly a good one to boil my reading mood!!

Was this weird, yes. The fan service was a bit much in places and hey, I have to give credit for this book being equal opportunity perverts. The girl character wants to marry and creepily stalks a woman, and a young man is obsessed with his smoking male idol. And then there's the doc who's an equal opportunity perv. So hey, got to give it a little props for not only targeting one female character like most stuff in this genre. The plot also is seriously weird. I'm not sure yet if it makes much sense, but I'm intrigued enough to want to see more.

So all I am going to say is just wow...... what the Heck did I just finish reading. At the start I got a little ,lost just due to the pace of the story, but I had to do a complete 180 and reread to trully get what was happening but man this was an amazing start to a manga just one crazy thing after another my only problem is the pace I would love to see it slow down and really focus on the characters but over all just wow I more then likely grabbing number 2 when I have a chance

So before I fangirl over rereading this series I want to address some critiques I've read because, as this is one my favorite series, I feel the need to address some of the criticisms I've seen:

1. "It's trying too hard to be edgy". Does this hinder the story, characters, writing, etc? If not, then what's your point? I understand this is based off of personal preference, but considering the plot were you seriously expecting anything less? This is a series about people becoming deformed monsters due to surgical implants and other people with surgical implants fighting/killing them. Could you even write a series with the exact same premise without any of what I previously mentioned? Maybe, but it wouldn't be nearly as interesting and honestly pretty unrealistic.

2. "I don't know anything about the main character/ his backstory's too vague". Yeah guys, its the FIRST VOLUME OF THE SERIES. What mangaka would dump the main character's entire backstory on the reader in the first volume? And before anyone says, "I don't need his entire backstory, just some idea of what his past was like," it is made pretty clear that he has a younger sister, Mirai, she was wheelchair bound for most of her life, he adores her more than anything considering the clover flashback, and he was probably in an abusive home situation as is evidence by the parental figure trying to kill him. I know that's not as much as what one normally gets in a first volume, but it's not nothing. Obviously the rest of his backstory is going to be doled out as the series continues. Chill out and wait for the rest of the volumes or drop the series, your choice.

3. "The other characters are stereotypes/ cliches and have no depth". Once again, this is the FIRST VOLUME OF THE SERIES. Just as the mangakas wouldn't drop the main character's entire backstory they're not going to give you multiple multifaceted characters in the first volume. Yes, I will admit that the characters are pretty one-dimensional, but a) we don't have all of their backstories (except Akuta, but that's just part of it), and b) the whole point of a first volume is to introduce the reader to the characters and then develop them as the story progresses. If you don't like the characters that's fine, but don't criticize the series for having generic characters when you've only read the first volume.

*deep breath* Okay, now that that's done, I can fangirl.

This is one of those series that I latched onto immediately. I love the premise, love the characters, and I love love LOVE the art style. Yes, it can be a little difficult to tell what's going on in certain scenes, but damn those action scenes are awesome! Seriously though, that scene where Akuta is having a dream about his past and the panel looks like a film reel and the shading is a little darker to symbolize the past? So awesome, gosh I love this series! I had forgotten about the story behind Mirai and Youkou's clovers and I almost threw up it was so sweet. Youkou himself is pretty over the top, even by shounen standards, but I think that's what makes him such a good fit for the Jackalopes. He's willing to be reckless to protect people and clearly the Jackolpes are, but they have more experience so they know how to control their recklessness. I love the designs of the gear the Jackalopes wear, my favorite has to be Midari's wires that come from her legs. I don't what it is, but leg augmentation is just so cool to me.

Didn't fangirl as long as I thought I would, but I think I got my point across. Just so we're clear-I don't have problems with people disliking this series. I get that this series isn't for everyone and the gore and violence can be a bit much. I only have a problem with people complaining about basic storytelling techniques that are present in most series, manga or otherwise and "edginess" because for obvious reasons. Anyway, those are my thoughts, looking forward to rereading volume 2.

With a very promising beginning I hoped that this manga would go into the bucket of shounen I actually find intriguing and fun. Needless to say this, like many other shounen trying to hard to be edgy, is a miss in my book. Setting up to be a good gore shounen about killing monsters with prosthetics that can turn into machine guns, swords, knives, etc. (Okay, that might not seem so great but Until Death Do Us Part was about a badass blind guy who kept his kantana in his cane, so I thought “hey why not?”)
We begin our story with this redhead boy, whose name I can’t be bothered to remember, who comes home on his birthday — after jumping off a bridge to beat someone in a car up for littering — and had his hands and leg shorn off by his sister. The sister character is where this manga begins its problems. She only gets enough character development for the reader to know she is in some way, shape, or form related to Mc-Kun, just got some new prosthetics, and has two pals. That’s it. The reader has no clue if these two are orphans, the sister’s background (anything aside from “Hi, I have no legs but I live a fulfilling life” crap, I want to know the details, was she born like that or was she ran over, tell us). We then get the traditional shounen-boy-band with the traditional half naked woman, hot guy who likes to smoke leader, our stupid Mc, a male perv doctor who may or may not be trans but chooses to have the appearance of a woman, the same thing but this time they have a crush on their half-naked sister (what can be better than straight lesbians) and fight with machine guns; then you have the opposing team which is, guess what, the same thing.
Normally I have no trouble with these tropes, hell, one of my favorite shounen (Black Clover) is the amalgamation of every cliché trope. But Black Clover is fun. The chapters I’ve read of Clover (no, I’m not caught up) are engaging, much more than this. I got bored with this story at chapter two. I thought it might get better so I went on to chapter 3. But spoilers, it doesn’t. Please don’t waste your time on this unless you want a gore manga, but even then you can do better.
(Shounen better than this: Hero Academia; The Promised Neverland; Black Clover; literally just look up Fantasy/Action and shounen on mangago)

The first chapter made me feel nauseous to read, but it was truly so cool. The nauseating part is how utterly gory and dark it is. That being said, the story is addicting and the world is unique and niche. I don’t know why stories that have worlds with systems and inventions like this one tend to end up in niche crowds with passionate fans, albeit few and far between of them, then is virtually unknown everywhere else. Dramatical Murder is another one; super cool world and inventions but totally under the radar with a few passionate fans.
But on to the bigger picture.
Smokin’ Parade has a world with deep lore that I can only barely begin to dig into. Amenotori seems to have ties to human trafficking which is directly related to where they source their transplant parts from. It makes sense, considering the immense availability and high demand for products and services such as theirs. The part which I’m unsure about is why their transplants turn some of their patients into “Spiders”, monsters created from their most passionate and truest desires. It seems obvious that these transformations are purposeful. Transplants are merely the carrier, the catalyst for Amenotori’s true goal. But what is it? It’s most certainly nothing as plain and simple as “produce monsters, create an evil world.”
Then we have the Jackalopes. Their team is composed of what I’d describe as a cool and interesting cast. They all have their own seemingly rich backstories (which we’ve yet to truly delve into) and strong personalities. It’s obvious that it takes certain criteria and characteristics to be. Jackalope, a couple of which being having been through a traumatic event which resulted in loss of limbs or worse, and an extremely strong will and sense of self.
I really like Smokin’ Parade so far. It’s twisted, dark, macabre, and very anime (manga). There are many layers to the story, and nothing is exactly as it seems. Though, while there are layers, the pattern itself that the story chooses to take seems relatively black and white. Two factions fighting against one another; sibling pitted against sibling. It seems simple enough, but charming all the same.

I bought this manga a while ago last year, and decided to finally read it. The art and the synopsis intrigued me. The first chapter was really good and a little frightening. It's very violent and gruesome, messed up, which makes me want to continue. The other characters were decent, but it seems a little too fast paced, and the art look a little to clustered that I couldn't recognize anything from a few panels. The main character is a little over the top, but the manga does glimpse a little of his past which is very mysterious, so I'm hoping for some character development. The other characters doesn't have much screen time, but only when they are fighting monsters. Thus, I believe they will shine more in future volumes.

One character I think is the most interesting, is the doctor of the group, and I believe he will play a much bigger role after reading this volume. The art is real nice, with darken lines, and great details of characters' design and the weapons they use. The story did become more interesting and spooky (in my view of it). So, I have hope that the story has potential to become amazing and thrilling. I do plan to pick up the next volume to see how the story will continue.

In some distant future, most people have had little upgrades or cosmetic changes via transplant. But sometimes, something goes wrong, and someone who's had a transplant goes rogue. When it happens to Youkou's sister, he encounters an elite taskforce that hunts down and destroys these monsters.

I liked the sound of the storyline, so I picked this up, but I quickly realized that I'd wandered into the horror genre. Very, very graphically violent, with heaps of body horror. Not my thing, but that's just preference. I liked the basic set-up, and I would have liked getting to know the members of Jackalope, but I just can't.

I am generally surprised with how good this monger was. Not only was the storyline interesting but also it didn’t make me feel sick to my stomach. It’s something that I can see myself been reading, and I think it would be very interesting to see an adaptation as a show. I have so many questions and I love that since it is the first manga in the series. Part of me wishes it was printed in color because sometimes the pictures feel really busy, but he works for the story. It wasn’t long winded at all.

Volume rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Series rating and review: ⭐️⭐️✨
What a disappointing series. The art is great and the premise is very interesting, but the story often feels rushed, particularly (but not exclusively) during the first few volumes. The series would have benefitted from being longer and taking more time to establish the characters and what is going on, in my opinion. In addition to that, while some action scenes are perfectly fine, others take place way too quickly and are over almost before they begin, which makes them less enjoyable to read than they could have been.
The ending of the series did not help my opinion of it either. While it contained some interesting ideas, I did not like the villain. Moreover, the last chapter doesn’t make much sense (or is, at the very least, underexplained).
All in all, this series just had a lot of wasted potential.

Interesting premise. Miraculous organ and tissue transplants aren't so miraculous and have the sinister side effect of turning you into a murderous monster. Shonen protagonist gets caught up and loses almost all the limbs and gets special mechanical limbs that allow them to fight back. The character design is also cool, but I find the fights to be hard to follow, the personalities and dialogue to be hard to swallow and the fan-service to be unwanted. Overall, I'm sad to say its just not for me.

I wanted to like this. I really did. I liked the art and the gore. The story started off interesting and a little strange. But the characters are just obnoxious. Like dang. The plot gets stereotypical and expected. Main character lives alone with sister, deals with life scaring trauma, gets rescued by heroes and joins them.
Sounds familiar...

This was a good start but I felt the gore was a little gratuitous and I also feel like this is the type of story I could get very bored with very fast. This duo’s other series deadman wonderland had that effect on me where I liked it at first but it quickly got old. I hope I’m wrong about this one though. I’m sticking with it for now.

I'm not entirely sure about this series yet. It was a lot more gruesome than I had expected, but the premise was cool, some of the characters were intriguing and the art was amazing. The huge number of characters made it somewhat difficult to keep up with, though (honestly, don't ask me any names right now). But I'm curious enough about it to check out the next volume.
