Open University set book. Not really my cup of tea. Maybe it's too broad a sweep across 300 years. I've dipped back into this book many times, it's very well written, but have been unable to eat the thing cover to cover.

A big book but written in such a way that you can dip into it for a chapter and then come back later. Enjoyed it.
