Mia is cousin to Olivia, the duchess of Venice; a ruler loved by her subjects for her command of magic and for saving the city from the flood. But Mia harbors a secret hatred of Olivia - her brother and mother were banished by the princess years before, and Mia has never forgiven her. Determined to ignore the powerful magic that is part of Olivia's reign, Mia finds herself lonely and isolated - until the appearance of Ara, a mergirl who may just hold the key to Venice's victory against the deadly Talish invaders...
Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
Just as good as book 1 but in slightly different ways!
I am so impressed at how Holly Webb makes these characters feel both young and old - they’re believable as children who have grown up with very adult responsibilities, while still breaking your heart a little with how unfair it is.
And the themes of family and expectations and even toxic or neglectful relationships are subtle but so well-done.
Despite all that, it’s not really a sad book. In spite of some of the heavy material and high stakes, the story is handled with a light touch that makes it easy to fly through.
A solid little fairy tale that doesn't stand up to an adult reader. This is sweet and well characterised, with lots of potential to be about love, loyalty and family (both blood and of choice) but it never delves into anything deeply. Very solidly for 8-12 year olds, but a great recommendation for my year 7 and 8s.
It was a very magical book, at times I didn't like the description of the surroundings, but a very magical book. It wasn't 5/5, but I would recommend it. Although the sequels don't follow, I recommend reading them.
EBOOK - I loved everything about this! Mia was much more relatable than Olivia, her cousin and the MC from the previous book, and Ara... Well Ara was simply awesome.
