Reading Level: LG Book Level: 2.6
Summary: Crustaceans are all around us, but that does not mean we necessarily understand them. In this introductory text, crustation habits, habitat, and lives.
Bookshelf Mentor Writing Trait(s) Presentation: The illustrations in this book are fantastic, in fact, they are actually paintings. Each page has black text on a white backdrop and is flanked by one of the illustrations. This seems to have been done with an emphasis on what the text is saying, followed by the audience looking at the illustration. Each illustration depicts a different crustacean, along with its preferred habitat, and occasionally depicting other animals in said environment. Organization: The overall organization of this book is logical and has a highly informative feel, as the different aspects of crustaceans such as their anatomy and habitat are discussed.
Other Suggestions: This would be an excellent introductory text for a lesson on animal lifecycles, animal habitats, the ocean, or marine life.
This is the third book in the delightful nature series by Carolyn and John Sills that I have reviewed here on Chat With Vera. This very talented team brings to the young child information that they can understand without compromising the scientific accuracy. The illustrations are beautiful and so very accurate.
Again, the book design is simple. A large picture on the right hand page showing detailed physical characteristics and simple text on the left page with short descriptive scientific title or clue. In the back of the book there is an afterward that revisits each crustacean giving more detail and information.
The young reader will learn what crustaceans look like, what they eat, where they live.
The book can be read to the very young child or the older reader can delve into it himself. A treasure to have tucked on a shelf ready for the inquisitive youngster to while away an afternoon learning while he is having fun. I highly recommend this set of books for the home library as well as the school library.
My other reviews: About Birds and About Arachnids.
This is a great book to add to my informational books collection. I would use this book to incorporate the life of a crustacean, where the class would learn all about their habitiat and the characteristics of thier skin. I would also use this book for my advanced readers because there is a more detailed section in the back.
A Northern Lobster can weigh up to 45 pounds!!! Also, had no idea that pill bugs were crustaceans.
I learn so much each time I pick up one of these books. I know they're meant for children (and would highly recommend using them with homeschool or classroom) but these little details are interesting and I'm learning a lot too every time I use one. Very cool series!
This book teaches children about crustaceans. It tells how they protect themselves, where they live, and what they eat. The sentences in the book are short, but at the end of the book there is extra information to teach about crustaceans.
We checked this book out from the library as we prepared for a trip to the coast. My daughter has asked to read this over and over. Our whole family enjoyed the illustrations are learned about crustaceans. Did you know that barnacles and pill bugs are crustaceans, too?
