"She's merciless. That unbending gaze even from the back, won't let me give up. The one who was being supported..was me. Thank you. Thank you."

This manga is so beautiful. I don't need the music for it to flow across the page, and it's a lovely experience.

Kousei's transformation is excellent!

You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.

Watching his transition in this one was ABSOLUTELY amazing. I’m slowly preparing myself for the worst especially because of what happens at that Gala. I’m not sure how anyone gets through these volumes without becoming somewhat emotional. It’s been a wild ride so far and I can’t wait to continue.

The story gets a little loopy and a lot melodramatic as piano prodigy Kōsei Arima starts directly confront his grief over the death of his mother. I'm getting frustrated with how the story is slowly unfolding, but I still find myself getting swept up in the emotion despite the heavy-handed manipulation.

“i’ll prove it. i’m amazing. kaori miyazono is even more amazing.”

[a bit spoiler-y]

i don’t usually rate every volume but i HAVE to rate this one five stars!! seeing kousei’s evolution is amazing and i’m so glad we’ve finally got to the turning point in the story. the fact that he went on alone is by itself already a sign of him changing. but him not being able to hear the music and still painting a picture with it? that’s the best part. anddd he did all of this just to prove to that kid that kaori is amazing!! 😚 all it took was lowkey drowning for him to realize that light can still reach him.

“is it because it’s a pool? or maybe because the moon’s out? or maybe…light can shine through even to the bottom of a dark ocean.”

Well, Kousei's mother is not as bad as it seems. She just wanted to make her son a perfect pianist and she wanted to make his future bright. Every mother wants this. She was just too demanding and strict. Oh, opinions about people can change rapidly.
And yes, Kousei's transformation was excellent! I love him more, now.
Kousei\Kaori moments are funny and sweet^^

Naoshi Arakawa achieves a dizzying, hypnotic swirl of word and image fragments throughout this volume that I really enjoyed. In the most intense moments, these fragments move from internal dialogue to external speech to past memories to hopes and fears, around and around. This technique has been present in other volumes, but its use during Kosei's "accompanist solo" at the gala is fantastic.

I'm happy to see some resolution to Kosei's internal conflicts and relationship with his mother. Hiroko remains a bit of a mystery. Kaori . . . just more and more sadness.

I appreciate the extra scenes of both Watari and Tsubaki, the manga focuses a bit more on them, even though it's just everyday life: it makes them feel more alive. Same for the piano teacher, they show more of her personality and fame.

The manga is taking a turn now though, I'm not ready yet haha.

Review for the entire series.

Naoshi Arakawa's Your Lie in April is a finely crafted work that will draw a steady stream of emotion from the barren crust of a calcified heart. It is a tearjerker, but it's actually a well-balanced work of humor, drama, and romance. At its heart, this story is a tragedy and a love story as well. It is a love story about life; and the tears it brings, whether from joy, sorrow, or delight.

I recommend you read this story alongside the musical accompaniment it suggests in its notes. It will increase your enjoyment by tenfold.

J’adore !

After reading 3 volumes back to back today, they're kind of blending in together; this review won't be as special.
The start of the end is slowing coming though :,,,)

I should stop expecting any of these volumes to not have any emotional scenes. While this volume isn't as emotional as the last few were but there were still a few scenes where Kosei is still dealing with his trauma, which makes sense, those things take time😭

This volume starts with Hiroko just finishing her performance and talking to Emi's music teacher, they know each other from when they were in school. Kosei and Kaori are practicing their performance for the gala together and separately every chance they get. It isn't easy for Kosei to place the music that Kaori has chosen since his mom used to play it all the time but he won't tell her that. Hiroko takes Kosei to a festival as a break and he talks about his feelings about his past and playing the piano. He asks her if his mom would forgive him for trying to forget her. Honestly, I don't think he should apologize for anything, he as 12 and tried his best while his mom was an adult and just because she was frustrated with not having much time left, she hit him hard enough to cause bleeding. There's no going back from that. I don't care that she was a good mom to him before she got sick. Regardless of the reasons, she still hit a child and caused mental trauma as well. Hiroko thinks that the reason Kosei is in so much pain from playing the piano is because she convinced his mom to teach him to play the piano and that if she hadn't then maybe they would have had a better relationship at the end. But again, it's still Kosei's mom's fault for her horrible actions. People made a very big deal of when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscers this year and that was just one slap and they were both grown men, but Kosei was only 12 and it wasn't just a little slap. I felt like this volume was trying to make me feel bad for Saki (Kosei's mom) and was making me forgive her because she was sick and his mom. But like I said, she was an adult, she should have known better and while yes, people make mistakes, that doesn't mean that they can all be forgiven. I'm saying this as someone who has a 3 year old niece, I'm very sensitive when it comes to violence against children, even fictional ones. Jokingly hitting a kid is fine because there's no pain and you're not trying to hurt them, but hard enough to cause bleeding is a whole other thing.

Anyways, our four main characters plus a friend of Tsubaki's stay after school and play with sparklers and Kosei realizes something that ends up helping him in the gala performance. We along with Kosei also meet Kaori's parents as well. This volume ends on the gala performance and unlike his previous performances, this one isn't so painful for him and the audience loves it.

Sometimes it doesn't seem fair that Kosei has had to know so much heartbreak already. Here he's really working through issues with his mother (is she a monster or not? There's so much which can be said for both arguments). We also get a sense of the triumph just within his reach. Seriously though, there's some brutal women in his life!

But this is also a story about found family and the relationships we build with those around us, which is a beautiful thing to see. That people can be comfortable enough to bicker, to complain, and to really push each other to excel is the stuff of true friendship. So while Kosei might seem to struggle, the one constant is that we always know he's not doing it alone.

So beautiful, once again. This volume really pushed Kosei’s story further, allowing us to examine his past in even greater detail. As I say in each review of these volumes, I cannot wait to see where this goes from here. I think the writing in this one is particularly beautiful, and the way the story progresses from past to future and back again is expertly done. One thing I have appreciated in the manga is how much more focussed the story is on Kosei, whereas the anime feels more able to showcase the supporting characters. On to the next…

4.5 tirando a 5

Loved this edition.

Favourite moment is:
Kousei: **back to consciousness, suddenly rising up and slamming into Watari's head**
Kaori: "He's alive!"
Kashiwagi: "He's in pain."
Tsubaki: "That's proof that he's alive! How could you... how could you drown in such a shallow pool? Everyone's gonna blame me!" **starts crying**
