Pre-reviewing Downtown Devil:
HOLY. SHIT. Downtown Devil has a level of hotness that will set your sheets on fire. Easy.
Not sure if I could form any coherent thoughts if I tried, let alone write a review that would make any sense right now. Downtown Devil is incredibly hawt debauchery written with style and a certain class. No wonder, though, because it's been penned by an author whose erotic work I admire and is among my favorites.

My Review:
Only a few days away from her 30th birthday, Clare doesn't feel like she has accomplished any of her goals just yet. Though she is close to set up something that is very dear to her heart: her own and very first photo exhibition at the Feurhy Gallery. A dream might come true for Clare. However, the problem is that she still had two weeks to go and she had to find and shoot three willing models. Those models had to match her show which was all about identity and heritage. As chance would have it, Clare sets her eyes on an incredibly stunning guy with a sexy head of dreadlocks who was working at a coffee shop. Mica fits her bill, but he's more than an intriguing case of identity and heritage. After their photo shoot, Mica and Clare take off to a super-duper hot summer fling that Clare won't forget. Soon though, Clare realizes that Mica's sexual tastes are somewhat excessive and go beyond her known boundaries. And Mica's handsome roommate, Vaughn, might tip her over the edge to accept a challenge: a threesome of epic debauchery.
I don't want to repeat my initial thoughts which were all about how mind-blowingly hawt this story was. What I'd like to add is that I gave it four stars due to the awesome smexy bits and, of course, due to Cara's excellent writing. I like a super steamy read like everyone else, but I usually need the sex with a great storyline. While I felt that Downtown Devil braced itself too much on sex, sex and more sex in the beginning of the story, I was glad that I got a bit more depth as those three main protagonists journeyed along. Still, I can't help and wish there would have been more photo shoots. I wanted to see Clare in action, doing what she does best, what she loves best: taking pictures. Also, I would have liked to see Mica and Vaughn actually climb a mountain. I really missed that particular sweaty thrill which could have pushed the plot into sky-high spheres. Another little niggle of mine was the beauty worship which, for my taste, was too much present.
What definitely soured the story for me was how everything panned out in the end. Like in the previous book, there will always be one person who will get the short end of the stick. I'll be very straightforward. The way the scales fell from Clare's eyes left a bad taste in my mouth. It also seemed to help that My heart hurt

This book needs to come with a warning label.
Warning. Content is extremely hot and may cause severe uncontrollable arousal. Read at your ovaries risk. Author is not responsible for spontaneous ovary CUMbustion, sudden need to hump everything in sight, and consistent molestation of significant others. May also cause hot flashes, squirming, and a mild case of side eye if reading in public.
The one thing I've come to rely on from this author is her ability to write characters that are so real, it feels like they're someone you'd easily meet in your daily life. There's no artifice, nothing over the top, no crazy drama, no extras that you may find in most other books...and the best thing is it's not needed. McKenna's writing is very erotically charged, and yet it's so much more than pure smut.
Downtown Devil is not exactly what I'd call a conventional romance, yet it certainly has the romance. It's a sinful indulgence that's perfectly crafted with a combination of depth and steam.
Clare is a heroine that's impossible not to like. She owns what she wants and makes no appologies for it. It's so rare to read about a woman that truly owns her sexuality and enjoys it without making excuses or shaming. When Clare meets the enigmatic Mica, his sexual lure proves to be too much to resist. But when Mica introduces her to a darker side of her desires, it opens up a whole new door that Clare only envisioned in her fantasies.
The character development is what takes this from an erotic indulgence to something much more. The characters just feel real. You feel like you truly know them and not only that but you get them.
I may have squirmed uncomfortably the entire time reading this, but I enjoyed every page. And while it may not have had crazy drama or angst that I've come to expect from most romance I read, it still took a turn I never saw coming and enjoyed thoroughly. It's anything but predictable.
The sexual chemistry practically crackles off the pages, and the sex? Holy...DAMN.
I haven't read the first in this series but I had no problems jumping straight into this one and I'm definitely looking forward to future installments. And while it had the typical Cara McKenna HFN ending, it was immensely satisfying. If you're looking for something a little bit different and a lot hot, you may just have found your next read.

Two best friends and a girl, what more could you ask for? Downtown Devil is part of the Sins in the City series. The series focuses on threesomes.
This series is hot and slightly taboo. Usually when I read these books I kind of want to advert my eyes, but I can’t. It’s just too steamy to stop reading! This is about a girl, Clare finding herself. She’s at a dead end job and she does photography on the side.
One day she meets Mica. Mica is mysterious, handsome and a major flirt. She wants to photograph him and he wants her. Everyone wins right? Mica is a playboy. He’s bi. He loves all forms of people. He doesn’t want a relationship and he wants to start a fling with Clare for the summer.
Summer doesn’t usually do this sort of thing, but why not right? This book is hot. First Mica’s personality is hot. He’s really controlling and tells Clare exactly what to do and how he likes it.
Then there’s the roommate / best friend Vaughn. I adore Vaughn. He’s so conflicted. He’s a nice guy and sometimes nice guys finish last. He has a crush on Clare, but he knows everyone loves his best friend Mica. When Mica asks Clare to ask Vaughn to kiss him one night, well things change and it gets hot and heavy.
The steamy scenes were off the charts. Vaughn, Mica and Clare oh my, this book is an erotic book and Cara McKenna doesn’t hold back at all. What I like about this series is that there is some back story. Mica is the shameless controlling flirt. While Vaughn and Clare want something more and they kind of bond during this whole process.
Overall, if you want a steamy read and that’s a little taboo, then this one is for you.

I've read a few of Cara McKenna's novels before and I enjoy her books, though sometimes her heroines are a hit or miss. But I'd be a hypocrite to not call out her colorism the same way I call out Black romance writers when I see theirs. Now to be fair, maybe the author is unaware of the issues of colorism in the Black community. Be that as it may, her heroine is another in a seemingly endless stream of biracial Black women who don't "look Black" or are depicted as ethnically ambiguous. The message this sends is more than clear - darker skinned Black women need never apply when it comes to love. We saw all the Twitter hate comedian Leslie Jones received. This is a large part why. Is it so difficult to imagine a woman like Jones or other darker-skinned women to find their Happily Ever Afters? Apparently in some parts of Romancelandia the answer is still yes. Before anyone tries to ride my bra strap, I'm not against mixed race heroines (though I have to be honest the way some of them are written is hugely problematic, playing up to their 'exotic' features). My issue has always been that we Black women come in all these glorious hues, so don't just celebrate one look.
And I need to add one more thing: my criticism should NOT be used as a reason for this author or any author to not diversify their books. As it's said, one can do better only when they KNOW better. So look at this as a teachable moment.

4, 25 "Mica" stars
Hell, it all starts with one look at the barista guy, for Clare to feel weak in her knees. Cause all it takes is to glance and than pretty much stare into an exotic mixed beauty of Mica....and the world stopped turning.
Claire is a wanna be photographer with a daily job and she proposes Mica to take his photos for her qualifying for the photography exibition.
After a few elusive calls, Mica finally invites Clare to a party...and from there on...all things are open to debate, open to explore, open to relive and ravish...
What Mica makes Clare explore is beyond her wildest dreams and then he takes her into a three way journey when Vaughn, Mica's best friend, enters the equation.
You werent just WITH two people, you could BE two people, doing this. You could give and receive, spoil and be spoiled.
The way Cara McKenna takes you into a story is almost deviously calculating...cause you enter thinking one thing and then you are enveloped with such a complexity of the background and characters development that you are stunned beyond the sexual hype...and you haven't even had the chance to ride it off...
So you are engulped with the drama of Mica, Vaughn and Clare's lives, hidden deep connection Mica and Vaughn carry on for each other, that is more than a friendship and yet it is not equaly considered or thought through from them individualy...
there's denial, indecisions, desires, reclusive set backs...then reaching out again, yielding, surrendering...
Their three way carnal exploration brings out the liberation and notion of revelation for them each and yet the only bond that came out of it was "love" between just two people.
This was more than a steamy read, way more...the only reason I gave it 4.25 stars and not 5, is because I was left with a somewhat bittersweet feeling in the end. I mean I knew that there couldn't be any other permanent solution and that it's almost utopian whishing on my side BUT I felt I was missing smth, I didn't have the conclusion...and I wanted at least to feel the departing ways that were portrayed...or maybe I just wanted to say goodbye in my own way and i simply wasn't able to. *shrugs*
Anyway, intense drama, surprisingly well developed emotional aspect of the characterisation...and one helluva sexy, intense yet elusive man - Mica.
He liked being looked at but not seen.

Cara McKenna’s plots are unique enough that they make for exciting reads and written in such a way that you could see yourself falling into a similar situation. While her stories aren’t (always) shocking, they still manage to flirt with my comfort zone and leave me walking away feeling a little bit naughty. Downtown Devil was no exception.
Clare is a woman who, while she may not have it all together, was damn close. Determined and strong, she has no problem going after what she wants. When she approaches Mica to pose for a picture for her debut exhibit, it leads to much more than she bargained for. What I liked about Mica’s appearance was that it knocked Clare off her game a bit. She was down to earth most of the time, but she definitely had her head in the clouds when it came to him. She knew how things were likely to end, but it didn’t stop her from longing for more. It was really adventure that Clare craved, and Mica was just the man to take her on one. I like that someone as level-headed as Clare goes through this, because I feel like it’s a place we’ve all been. But she was always honest with herself and with Mica. Even when her pride was likely to take a hit. When Vaughn was thrown into the mix, there was a definite ‘good cop, bad cop’ vibe to this story that I wasn’t expecting; I loved it! Cara McKenna’s plots are unique enough that they make for exciting reads and written in such a way that you could see yourself falling into a similar situation. While her stories aren’t (always) shocking, they still manage to flirt with my comfort zone and leave me walking away feeling a little bit naughty. Downtown Devil was no exception.
Clare is a woman who, while she may not have it all together, was damn close. Determined and strong, she has no problem going after what she wants. When she approaches Mica to pose for a picture for her debut exhibit, it leads to much more than she bargained for. What I liked about Mica’s appearance was that it knocked Clare off her game a bit. She was down to earth most of the time, but she definitely had her head in the clouds when it came to him. She knew how things were likely to end, but it didn’t stop her from longing for more. It was really adventure that Clare craved, and Mica was just the man to take her on one. I like that someone as level-headed as Clare goes through this, because I feel like it’s a place we’ve all been. But she was always honest with herself and with Mica. Even when her pride was likely to take a hit. When Vaughn was thrown into the mix, there was a definite ‘good cop, bad cop’ vibe to this story that I wasn’t expecting; I loved it! I had this from the library for 63 days. When it finally expired this go round (I was at approx 43%) I decided to let it go and not renew.
It's not bad but it's not giving me what I want at the moment. It's a little messy, a little perplexing right now and I'm sure it will all work out but it's just not hitting the spot.
Still, Cara McKenna is a witch who does very little wrong.

This is a book that pushes boundaries. I have read many a book with a threesome. This one seems a little more forbidden. There is Mika, a bi sexual, his roommate Vaughn, a heterosexual and Clare. Mika is a delicious Downtown Devil. He is sexually adventurous, a bit standoffish and emotionally unavailable character but his backstory is a heartbreaker that you can understand why he is built the way he is. Vaughn is a true gentleman, raised right by his parents, a do-gooder and I respected his character a lot. And Clare just turned 30 and she wants something, a new career, a new relationship…something. She is also an extremely laid back, a go with the flow cool chick and I can see why Mika and Vaughn liked her.
I could feel how much Clare liked Mika, how much Vaughn liked Clare and how much Mika liked Vaughn. The chemistry between Mika and Vaughn was palpable. I felt a little bad for Clare. She felt like a third wheel to me sometimes. And I liked Clare with Vaughn. Vaughn is a nice guy. Mika is emotionally unavailable. She even had great chemistry with Vaughn, so why did she want Mika so damn much?! I seriously don’t get the nice guy being passed over…SMH
Who is looking for diversity? The characters in this book all have different ethnic backgrounds. Clare is half black, half Irish. Mika is half Malaysian, half black. Vaughn is a black man. And Clare is a photographer who is putting together an exhibit filled with faces of people with mixed ethnicities.
I enjoyed this book very much. The sex scenes were fantastic…I didn’t skim them, that’s for sure! It explores sexual chemistry, sexual attraction and great friendships. The characters all made me think and feel for them. The storyline also was done very well. This book is well thought out and very well executed. I was a little surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

A curl-your-toes scorcher! Downtown Devil is sinful, decadent, and one seriously steamy, delicious ride.
The quick of it is that Clare's working on a photo exhibit and it's brought a wild, reckless man to her doorstep. Perfect for her exhibit and, maybe, her bed too. She needing a little adventure and daring in her life and Mica and his roommate...look like just the pair to deliver it one mind blowing orgasm at a time.
Okay so right off the bat. This one is erotic. Non-stop sex and exploring and three people pulled into a menage that'll test their boundaries...and maybe yours too. It's not going to be the read for everyone but if you're looking for a scorcher that'll make you squirm...let me introduce you.
Clare-- I loved Clare. She's at a turning point in her life and restless which is something I can relate to. She's artistic and has a lovely way about her. She's easy to spend time with and I love her sense of daring. How open she was to trying new things even if she was feeling nervous and out of her element. She's just a fun heroine.
Mica-- Mica is magnetic. Completely mesmerizing and will drive you crazy with both lust and frustration. He had a very fucked up childhood and is a pretty fucked up adult. He's reckless and free spirited and not someone to rely on really. He's in constant motion and forgets commitments and social niceties--they just don't register to him and he doesn't even realize he's not behaving right. He can make you wanna scream in frustration but again it's impossible not to be pulled into the whirlwind that is him. And when it comes to sex he's totally different. His focus is intense and he makes the person he's with his absolute world while they're together. I know he sounds like a total fuck off but seriously I was as taken by him and pulled into his orbit just like Clare and Vaughn.
Vaughn--Vaughn is an amazing man. He's the opposite of his best friend Mica in nearly every way and is really the dream guy. He's calm and collected, responsible, dependable. He's an EMT and goes about saving people all day and doling out orgasms all night. lol Very sexy and knows how to treat a women right and is crazy respectful. I was loving me some Vaughn.
They were all really interesting and a unique group. Clare's photo project focuses on people with unique heritage so that was a big thing. She's black/Scottish, Mica's black/Malaysian, and Vaughn West African/Haitian. It was neat seeing such a mix of characters. Not just their mixture of genes but their different walks in life as well--both sexually and with how they were. From full out kinky to pretty vanilla and testing the waters for the first time. From full time responsible job to filler jobs and searching for a new one. It was just a fascinating mixture.
Heat-wise. This is full out kinky filthy heat. There's scenes with just Clare and Mica but mostly it's all three exploring menage--and holy hell it's incredibly hot. Mica has no boundaries and he pulls these two along for quite the adventure. Including some male on male action--Mica has always had a thing for Vaughn but other than a few brief encounters it's not something Vaughn's ever been okay with exploring so there's definitely some pushing of that boundary in this one. It could make for some heavy emotional turmoil and some very passionate and stirring scenes.
So. This one. If you're looking for a smorgasbord of no holds barred sex in all sorts of kinky combinations...grab it. Grab it now. McKenna will keep you on edge and have you begging for more. Hot damn but these three were on fire. The sex is adventurous, exciting, and intense. The emotions just as strong and gripping. It was a fascinating journey with some unexpected twists that left me going well that's not how I expected things to end at all...but it was brilliant! Love when an author can surprise me and McKenna has a real talent for just that.

The good:
- There's only one character with speaking lines that's white, if I remember correctly. Everyone else is part of the rainbow and I love it.
- Similarly, love is not packed into a neat ♂・♀ box. Girl thinks guy is hot, guy thinks girl is hot, both think his roommate is hot. Needless to say this is where the menage comes in.
- While most of the book is sex, the lead up to sex, or the aftermath of sex, there's still some plot to it. A gallery show provides a through line that mostly holds up.
- Said sex is scorching. The threesome evolves several different ways and includes gay scenes and light power exchange. Read this book at home, not on the train! (Ask me how I know.)
- The relationships felt believable, even if I wasn't perfectly happy with the ending.
The not-so-good:
- The second in a series this book stands alone, but I found a continuing theme troubling. In both books the happy ending includes only two characters out of the main three. The message seems to be "threesomes are fun, but of course they don't last! Don't be silly."
In one book I let it go, but two in a row annoy me. People find all different ways to share their love, and it irks that the author is writing off polyamorous love as a phase, something to enjoy but move past. It's not for me, it's not for everyone, but some people make it work. Why not write about that?
- Making the happy ending between just two characters leaves the third high and dry. He just... drifts off. You doubt he's happy. It's a crappy place to leave one of the main characters in a romance, especially as I doubt he'll be returning in the last book.
Even with my qualms it's a solid and super hot read and a must for those who like their threesomes out of the M/F/M mold.

Well-written, well-structured writing. As the story begins, you become captivated. You'll be transported there with Clare and Mica's intrigue.
During the first couple of chapters, I found it insightful, fascinating, and refreshing. Claire and Mica seem like a perfect match, and you can't help but root for them. It seemed, however, that the author had a different idea.
Mica is a mysterious character with an insurmountable exterior. While he'll let you into his world, you won't be able to know his true nature.
Although I hoped that Mica would be different in some way, I was deeply disappointed. His heartlessness, manipulative nature, and jerkish behavior were simply appalling.
There was something very off-putting about the way he used Clare. He then entices Clare into a web of lies and deceit so that he can screw his best friend Vaughn.
Claire was a decent character, but sometimes she seemed too needy and naive to pursue a man like Mica.
Vaughn, on the other hand, had an opposite personality and was the sweetest of sweets. He was just too nice for Mica and Clare.
I would describe this as a ménage a trios, rather than a MFM. Although the writing was stellar, the sexual acts between the three characters lacked depth.
In no way did it feel climatic. The three way felt like force. There was a feeling of curiosity about the characters' actions and not because they eagerly desired them.
Vaughn and Clare started a thing when Clare was feeling low from Mica during the worst of times. In retrospect, it should have felt like a love story unraveling, but instead it seemed like they were settling for second best. Because even after Mica ghosted her, she still wanted to have another three-way with him and Vaughn. Vaughn always kept Mica at the top of his priority list even after he reconciled himself with Clare and the idea of dating her exclusively.
Just felt wrong, plus the scenes together missed an opportunity to convey how much they like or perhaps love each other. The author used this technique to convey information but not to demonstrate how a relationship was developing.
This was a missed opportunity by the author who did have the two of them intimate but more implied that they are seeing each other and still wish to be a threesome with Mica despite his unfair treatment of Clare.
This was an okayish book that failed to keep up its momentum. Despite a great start, the ending sucked and was as dry as sand in the Sahara Desert.

In the second installment to the Sins in the City series, Cara McKenna gives readers an energetic heroine in Clare. Her restless spirit grows bored as she nears the age of thirty and she’s looking for something that will liven up her summer. What she doesn’t realize is that entertainment will come in the form of a hot barista who is both beautiful inside and out. Though she says she wants to photograph her for her portrait exhibit, she cannot deny her attraction for him.
Mica is a wonderful character. Filled with charisma and a sexiness that oozes from the pages, McKenna amps up the heat very quickly. And she has to because not only does she have to create a believable romance between Clare and Mica, but she also brings in Mica’s roommate, Vaughn into the mix.
The sex scenes in this book set this book on fire. While I was a little lukewarm about the first book in the series, McKenna amps up the passion in a big way with this book. Not only did I enjoy both heroes in this book, but Clare’s openness and personality made this book a big win for me. This book is the perfect read for a hot summer night. With DOWNTOWN DEVIL, Cara McKenna proves why she is one of my favorite Erotic Romance writers out there.

Cara McKenna can take a book that centres on sex and make it about connection, emotion and rapport. This book takes the unconventional and makes it fun and desirable with characters that were utterly interesting and enticing. I am sold on ANYTHING Cara McKenna writes.

This M/M/F menage worked really well for me - it's really hot, and I loved all three characters.
Clare is just turning thirty and on the edge of something really good in her life. During the day she works for a call center, taking complaint after complaint for an online retailer. But her true passion is photography and after much hard work and a little brown-nosing, she finally has the chance for her own show in a few months. She has decided to call the show, "So, What Are You?" since she is asked that all the time. Clare's appearance often prompts people to ask her this:

He met Vaughn at a camp for struggling kids years ago and they formed a very close bond.
Mica invites Clare to go with himself and Vaughn to a housewarming party for a friend of theirs. Clare grabs her photography equipment, and off she goes. She is extremely attracted to Mica, so after getting her pictures, the flirtation starts. up. Mica loves sex and is very honest, open, and blunt about it. Nothing phases him and nothing embarrasses him. This turns on Clare a lot.
As her body stilled, he drew back, sat up on his heels. She stared at him, obliteration no doubt written all over her face. “Holy shit.”
He broke into a smile, and wiped his lips and chin on the back of his hand. “That’s what I like to hear.”
“You are . . . You are insanely good at that. You must really like doing it.”
“I like sex,” he said simply. “I’ll do anything.”
While watching a movie with Mica and Vaughn on the couch one night, fondling starts to happen and Mica suggests that Vaughn might want to join them in the bedroom. Clare finds Vaughn to be quiet and kind of shy and is really surprised when Vaughn agrees. She is definitely attracted to Vaughn as well. Vaughn in an EMT who grew up a little poor but with a good family.
Vaughn was handsome—not freakish, traffic-stopping, model handsome like Mica, but a more ordinary persuasion of goodlooking. About six feet tall, very dark skin, short hair, with a nice, solid shape to him behind his fitted tee and jeans. And very white teeth, she noted. Gorgeous smile, this guy had.
He is close with his dad and although Mica is his best friend, hates that Mica doesn't always treat his girlfriends great. Mica always respects his dates, but he leaves without saying anything in the morning. Or he forgets he made a date. He lacks the social skills to keep a long-term girlfriend - and it drives Vaughn crazy. When the three of them start something, Vaughn is the one in the morning apologizing to Clare because Mica has already left for the day. Or in the evening when Mica forgets they had something planned.
And let's get to that M/M part of the M/M/F menage. Years ago when Vaughn and Mica would camp and climb together, Mica admitted he was bisexual. He also made a move on Vaughn, and even to Vaughn's astonishment, he let him. They never had actual intercourse, but Mica gave Vaughn oral. More than once - and Vaughn liked it. He is embarrassed by it though and it confuses him, but it turns him on. Vaughn didn't want to have a physical relationship with Mica this summer, but now with Clare enticing him to bed, it's inevitable. This pleases Clare very well too.
The three of them explore pretty much every combination there is to explore in a menage. It's done well - Clare is VERY into both Mica and Vaughan and she likes the two of them together and just watch as well. At first it is Mica who steals the show for her - he is passionate and dirty and pushes her boundaries. But he is in it just for the sex. He never promises her a future past this summer, something she is aware of, but still it's hard to separate "just sex" from the growing feelings she has for him. But Vaughn comes in quietly. Respectfully. While he isn't as showy and demanding as Mica, he is just as passionate about Clare. He is the one that fixes her coffee and breakfast in the morning. He is the one that comes over with pizza when she has had a bad day. He also blows her mind in bed, but in a different way than Mica.
There is a HEA at the end and it's solid. I highly recommend this for erotic fans out there.

While watching a movie with Mica and Vaughn on the couch one night, fondling starts to happen and Mica suggests that Vaughn might want to join them in the bedroom. Clare finds Vaughn to be quiet and kind of shy and is really surprised when Vaughn agrees. She is definitely attracted to Vaughn as well. Vaughn in an EMT who grew up a little poor but with a good family.
Vaughn was handsome—not freakish, traffic-stopping, model handsome like Mica, but a more ordinary persuasion of goodlooking. About six feet tall, very dark skin, short hair, with a nice, solid shape to him behind his fitted tee and jeans. And very white teeth, she noted. Gorgeous smile, this guy had.
He is close with his dad and although Mica is his best friend, hates that Mica doesn't always treat his girlfriends great. Mica always respects his dates, but he leaves without saying anything in the morning. Or he forgets he made a date. He lacks the social skills to keep a long-term girlfriend - and it drives Vaughn crazy. When the three of them start something, Vaughn is the one in the morning apologizing to Clare because Mica has already left for the day. Or in the evening when Mica forgets they had something planned.
And let's get to that M/M part of the M/M/F menage. Years ago when Vaughn and Mica would camp and climb together, Mica admitted he was bisexual. He also made a move on Vaughn, and even to Vaughn's astonishment, he let him. They never had actual intercourse, but Mica gave Vaughn oral. More than once - and Vaughn liked it. He is embarrassed by it though and it confuses him, but it turns him on. Vaughn didn't want to have a physical relationship with Mica this summer, but now with Clare enticing him to bed, it's inevitable. This pleases Clare very well too.
The three of them explore pretty much every combination there is to explore in a menage. It's done well - Clare is VERY into both Mica and Vaughan and she likes the two of them together and just watch as well. At first it is Mica who steals the show for her - he is passionate and dirty and pushes her boundaries. But he is in it just for the sex. He never promises her a future past this summer, something she is aware of, but still it's hard to separate "just sex" from the growing feelings she has for him. But Vaughn comes in quietly. Respectfully. While he isn't as showy and demanding as Mica, he is just as passionate about Clare. He is the one that fixes her coffee and breakfast in the morning. He is the one that comes over with pizza when she has had a bad day. He also blows her mind in bed, but in a different way than Mica.
There is a HEA at the end and it's solid. I highly recommend this for erotic fans out there.

Cara McKenna is doing such good work writing thoughtful, clever, funny, realistic, sexy, inclusive erotica and this one is an addition to that long list of top books. And it’s m/m/f which is basically my erotica catnip so: thank you CMcK for that.

He agrees and after being flaky and non-committal in the way of roaming, handsome men, finally gets in touch. She photographs him, they sleep together and it’s hot as heck.
The next morning, in the way of those flaky men, he’s gone and she ends up having breakfast with his best friend and temporary roommate Vaughn. That’s fine, it’s casual, she can deal. And his roommate is nice.
Slowly McKenna introduces us to Vaughn, who I suppose is the hero of the piece, although you can’t easily apply those labels. He’s everything Mica isn’t. He’s a relationship guy, by and large. Reliable. He calls a woman the next day. He doesn’t really sleep around. As it transpires Mica’s magnetic sexuality has just as much of a grip on him as he does on Clare. In secret, over a number of summers, Mica has tempted him into several liaisons. Vaughn is very believably conflicted over it. He isn’t gay and he’s afraid his Dad will find out and it will define his identity in a way he doesn’t necessarily want it to. It’s a nice commentary on how, actually, this stuff is private and there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s sworn off Mica and made it a condition of his moving in temporarily that, that aspect of their relationship is over.
Finally, Mica calls Clare for another hook up. And, cleverly, he invites Vaughn to join them It would be so easy for this to feel forced or awkward but this is CMcK, so no worries. It’s awesome. And hot. And for Vaughn, wonderfully conflicted, because he can see where it’s heading.
And so it proves. It happens again, and this time the m/m part takes a central role.
All the while Clare is falling for Mica but knows he is not a relationship guy at all. She likes Vaughn but isn’t drawn to him in the same way. Vaughn is falling for Clare but still wants Mica. Mica remains an enigma. We never hear from him, he doesn’t really say much, he just conducts the people around him with his sexual magic.
Where this fell down a bit for me, rather like CMcK’s last book in this series, is the resolution. Clare’s transformation from somewhat indifferent to Vaughn to Vaughn’s the one for me felt very sudden. I almost felt bad for Vaughn, like if Mica got his shit together he’d obviously be the one Clare really wanted and that’s not how I want to feel at the end of one of these books. I get Clare and Vaughn being together. I think that’s a good way of dealing with the situation (which was never going to be a permanent happy, progressive threesome because of the people involved), but it was too abrupt for my liking. That’s why this one loses a star.
The sex is amazing, but there’s not enough dirty talk to make it on to my highly coveted ‘hawt-sex’ shelf.

Holy Hotness!!!! Okay so honestly speaking this is my first book by McKenna and after reading Downtown Devil I am happy to say I am now a fan! This is the second book in the Sins in the City series and after this I will definitely going back to read book one. Be warned this book is a M/M/F story that will set you on fire!!
Normally I tend to stay away from these types of books and really focus on the sweet romance ones but I really got into this one. The characters were so real I felt like I could touch them and I really wanted to touch Mica and Vaughn. Lol. Clare wants to find herself and it just so happens she met the right man, Mica who is willing to help her out. What starts off as a fling turns into steamy nights and then Vaughn is thrown into the mix and bam this erotic story just took off.
I really liked how open and honest Clare was written. McKenna did an excellent job on not only making her embrace what she wanted but didn't make her the slutty kind of heroine that I usually can't stand. As far as Mica and Vaughn go they are just both swoon worthy. While they might be best friends they are both different but that just made them stand out even more in my eyes.
The scenes between these three are steamy, detailed and seriously heat up the pages. If you're looking for a steamy read to add to your TBR I highly recommend Downtown Devil.

I found author Cara McKenna when a Goodreads friend suggested the book WILLING VICTIM several years back. That book opened up a whole new world of erotica for me and I loved the way the author told such an unconventional story. So, when I got the chance to review DOWNTOWN DEVIL. I immediately jumped at the chance.
DOWNTOWN DEVIL is a bit of a convoluted story. Clare is a photographer and she meets Mica in a coffee shop and is struck by his looks. She tells him she wants to photograph him and that ultimately leads to her ending up in her bed. He's a force to be reckoned with, and the dirty raunchy things he seems to promise with his eyes is just what Clare needs after ending her previous relationship. What she didn't count on was his roommate, Vaughn.
Vaughn seems to be Mica's opposite, but he's no less hot--just maybe in a different way. So, when Mica proposes that they invite Vaughn into their bedroom escapades, Clare is ready for the adventure. But, it becomes clear that there is more than meets the eye between Mica and Vaughn. It also starts to become clear to Clare, that she's starting to build more feelings for Mica than what a fling is supposed to have. She just may end up with more than she bargained for.
Let me just say right off the bat that this is hot. Very erotic. There's some story there, but the thing that is most prevalent in this book is the sex. So, if you are looking for major character development or lots of dialogue, you will be disappointed.
That's not to say that there is NO dialogue, but most of the story is centered around Clare and Mica and Vaughn and their sexcapades. And honestly, I am completely fine with that.
Mica's character is really screwed up. Really, he's hot but he's self-centered, self-serving and kind of a dirt bag. But, I really like the back story we got on him and it made sense the way that he was. However, that didn't stop me from shouting at him for most of the book.
I really liked Vaughn's character. He seemed to be the dark horse in this story. He kind of snuck up on me, but I wanted him to get a HEA.
Clare was not your typical contemporary heroine. From her description, she had really unique features, wasn't classically beautiful, but I loved how the author wrote her as someone who came to love their uniqueness although it wasn't easy getting to that place. She also owned her sexuality, didn't make excuses for what she did with Mica and Vaughn, and that made me like her more.
So, now let's get to what I've hinted at right from the beginning...the sex. There is LOTS of it, TONS. M/F, M/M, M/M/F, phone sex, lots of dirty talk, and just all around hot monkey lovin'. If you want fade to black scenes, this isn't for you. If you want a menage where the men don't touch, this isn't for you. Everyone gets in on the action in this one and it is HOT!
Because of that though, I think the story suffered, but only a little bit. The author did an admiral job trying to blend the sex, story and characters. I just wish there had been a little more.
DOWNTOWN DEVIL is the second book in the the Sins in the City trilogy but it can be read as a standalone. No characters in the first book overlap in this one or are mentioned so you wouldn't be missing out on anything by just jumping into this one.
Overall, I thought this book was an enjoyable read. It was steamy and there was a story there. It also had a nice HFN ending. I feel like there was a lot left unsaid, so I guess it will be up to the reader to decide how it ultimately ends. Although, I wouldn't mind catching up with these three again.

The book is out today and finally I can post my full review. Before that I have just this to say: Go get this book! You won't regret it!
This is the second book in Ms McKenna's series of contemporary erotic menage romance Sins in the City and it's probably the best of her erotic writings I have read. And I'm not saying this lightly since I'm a huge fan of her books in general.
This one is special, I think. At least it felt that way to me. I'm not a big fan of menage romance but like many of the other tropes and elements in romance I don't particularly like, when they are exceptionally well done and read convincing and engaging to me, I do enjoy them a great deal.
The focus of the story falls on the heroine, Clare, and her exploration of her sexuality and her relationships but things gradually shift and the more we see of Mica and Vaughn (friends and roommates and in a way, the male love interest in the story), the more romance becomes about all of them, their sexuality and identity, the way they see themselves, their love lives, fears, hopes and dreams.
There is also a strong emphasis on the mixed race of the characters from the very beginning and I very much like the way Ms McKenna explored their identity and how it affected them and the relationships they build with the people they meet in their lives. They all follow their own paths and when the three of them cross, it's the time to be honest with oneself, to be open and to push boundaries and taboos.
One of the things I liked the most in this story is how refreshingly unpredictable the romance felt to me. I knew there will some kind of HEA/HFN at the end but there were so many moments in the story where I really couldn't imagine how it will all play out in the end. I considered a number of possible outcomes and they all seemed viable and fitting. It's not very common in romance and I absolutely loved it - the not-knowing, the guessing, the author making the reader reconsider their own assumptions and expectations.
I will not go into details about the plot in order to avoid spoilers. I want only to say how much I appreciate the way Ms McKenna presented the sexuality of her characters in this story - no shaming, no judgement, just young people following their desires. There were false expectations and self-doubt, guilt and shame but also shared dreams and ecstasy, openness and acceptance and so much hope for future happiness.
In short I loved everything about this story. I'd say it's the perfect erotic romance for me - hot and sensual with a strong and intriguing plot and amazing characters who grow and change before your eyes. The reader sees how sex and feelings and taboos and personal boundaries are explored and how they mix together in this complex net that makes our lives and shapes so much of our identity.
OMG, this book was so good!
Threesome, bi and straight characters, exploration of sexual attraction and romantic relationships, just perfect. And unlike most romances it really kept me on the edge till the end, not knowing which way things will go and more importantly which way I wanted them to go. Just perfect!!!

4, 25 "Mica" stars
Hell, it all starts with one look at the barista guy, for Clare to feel weak in her knees. Cause all it takes is to glance and than pretty much stare into an exotic mixed beauty of Mica....and the world stopped turning.
Claire is a wanna be photographer with a daily job and she proposes Mica to take his photos for her qualifying for the photography exibition.
After a few elusive calls, Mica finally invites Clare to a party...and from there on...all things are open to debate, open to explore, open to relive and ravish...
What Mica makes Clare explore is beyond her wildest dreams and then he takes her into a three way journey when Vaughn, Mica's best friend, enters the equation.
You werent just WITH two people, you could BE two people, doing this. You could give and receive, spoil and be spoiled.
The way Cara McKenna takes you into a story is almost deviously calculating...cause you enter thinking one thing and then you are enveloped with such a complexity of the background and characters development that you are stunned beyond the sexual hype...and you haven't even had the chance to ride it off...
So you are engulped with the drama of Mica, Vaughn and Clare's lives, hidden deep connection Mica and Vaughn carry on for each other, that is more than a friendship and yet it is not equaly considered or thought through from them individualy...
there's denial, indecisions, desires, reclusive set backs...then reaching out again, yielding, surrendering...
Their three way carnal exploration brings out the liberation and notion of revelation for them each and yet the only bond that came out of it was "love" between just two people.
This was more than a steamy read, way more...the only reason I gave it 4.25 stars and not 5, is because I was left with a somewhat bittersweet feeling in the end. I mean I knew that there couldn't be any other permanent solution and that it's almost utopian whishing on my side BUT I felt I was missing smth, I didn't have the conclusion...and I wanted at least to feel the departing ways that were portrayed...or maybe I just wanted to say goodbye in my own way and i simply wasn't able to. *shrugs*
Anyway, intense drama, surprisingly well developed emotional aspect of the characterisation...and one helluva sexy, intense yet elusive man - Mica.
He liked being looked at but not seen.

Her writing style feels prosaic in the best of ways: there's a nakedness to it, a stark stripping of most figurative language that allows for a smooth translation to understanding the characters. As a reader, you get to see the characters as unmediated by the artifice of language as possible.
However, this book didn't work for me. It didn't work for me more than Crosstown Crush, which I also wasn't enamoured with, but for totally different reasons.
This is a ménage, with two men--one straight, one bisexual--and one straight woman. Nothing, however, at any point, not the sex, not the relationship(s) feels at all queer. On the contrary, it all gets resolved in a het HEA for the ages, including the woman cooking a domestic breakfast for the straight dude.
What made me most disgruntled with this novel was its trading in the ugliest of stereotypes for bisexual people, i.e., promiscuity, fickleness, inability/refusal to commit, and utter disinterest in relationships beyond no-holds-barred sexual encounters.
The happy resolution in heterosexual domesticity--you can hear the sighs of contentment a mile away in that chapter--in spite of one last hurrah/threesome with the ever-available bi, precludes celebrating this book for its sex positivity. It's not. It's not about enjoying sex or sexuality or experimenting or no-holds-barred or anything like that. Unfortunately.
It could have been, and it would have made this a much stronger book. That, and the absence of biphobia would have been really nice indeed.

So. I really loved Crosstown Crush, and I think I didn't like Downtown Devil because I liked that one so much. Does that make sense? I felt like Crosstown Crush was such an emotional exploration, and though this book has heart, it's not the same. It's almost like every other ménage book except there's more story here.

So, sparks start flying between Mica, who is bisexual, and Claire, who is a photographer. They share a hot as hell hookup that could potentially turn into something more. When sparks start flying between Mica's roommate, Vaughn, and Claire, too, it's totally on. And by that, I mean there's crazy hot incendiary sex everywhere.
No doubt about it, Cara McKenna knows her way around a bedroom (and a shower, and outside, and pretty much everywhere). And while I thought this was emotional--not too angsty, but realistic and on the edge of dark, it wasn't as forbidden as I expected. God, I know that makes me sound like I'm some kind of ...crazy person. Somehow a hot as hell ménage relationship isn't enough for me anymore? No, that's not exactly what I mean. It's just going back to what I said before about Crosstown Crush. That book seemed so forbidden to me. It was more emotional between Samira and Bern. This one seemed less so for all the players involved. I don't know why! Regardless, it was very hot and I loved the way things turned out.
If you like reading ménages, you're going to go crazy over Downtown Devil. I guess that's what's really important. :)

2-2.5 stars. This book was not what I was expecting. This is the story of Clare, Mica and Vaughn. Clare is an aspiring photographer, working on a project that she needs models for. She meets Mica at a coffee shop where he works and is dazzled by his looks. She asks him to model for her project. He is very laid back and seemingly not very interested, but he takes her card. She has to hound him a bit to get him to set up a time to photograph him. He flakes out on her and leaves her hanging for hours, but finally she gets a chance to photograph him. She is very interested in him because he is the most handsome man she's ever met. Even though he acts uninterested, he propositions her and they end up having a hot night together. Clare is hooked on him and wants more, but he is very obviously not the relationship type. But he does invite her over again and his roommate/best friend, Vaughn, hangs out with them. Mica manipulates the situation and dares Clare to kiss Vaughn. Vaughn is reluctant, but what Mica wants, Mica gets. So they all end up having a threesome. It is very MFM, with no touching between Mica and Vaughn, but Clare can tell there is something underlying between them. Clare enjoys their night together, but she likes Mica and she wants more from him than just sex and she doesn't necessarily want a repeat of the threesome. But it is obvious that Mica does and that he really only wants her if Vaughn is invited to join in. So he manipulates Clare and Vaughn again into a few more nights together where things escalate between Mica and Vaughn. They go from no touching to more touching, to full sex between them. Finaly Clare asks them what their relationship is like really. She finds out that Mica and Vaughn meet up once a year to go on a few week long climbing trip together and during that time they have a sexual relationship (involving Mica giving blowjobs to Vaughn only) and the rest of the time they are just best friends. Mica has always wanted more, but Vaughn has relented until now. When they are in a threesome with Clare, it seems to me like Mica doesn't really care or want her there. He really just wants Vaughn. After he gets full sex with Vaughn, he blows Clare off and she knows their times together is over. She is hurt because she liked Mica. She ends up being friends with Vaughn, which at first is awkward because they don't know each other very well, except in the biblical sense. And eventually, she and Vaughn begin a relationship without Mica, who flakes out and then leaves at the end of the summer to go back to his own city as planned.
The writing was really good and the language and descriptions were very good. But I just did not love the characters or their actions. So much so that I couldn't enjoy their sexy times, which was most of the book and kind of the point really. I liked Clare. Vaughn was ok. He came off as kind of weak and easy to manipulate. They both came off as victims of Mica's to me. I did not like Mica at all. He was selfish and manipulative. He was infatuated with Vaughn and they had a kind of Brokeback Mountain kind of relationship. They only had a physical relationship on their once a year climbing trips and it only went so far. Mica wanted more from Vaughn and he knew he had to find a way to get what he wanted. When he moves to the city to stay with Vaughn for the summer, Vaughn tells him they will only be friends and not continue their physical relationship during this time. So when he met Clare, he saw her as an easy mark to manipulate Vaughn into joining him under the guise of a threesome. He didn't really like Clare. He just used to her to get Vaughn to sleep with him. Mica had no redeeming qualities to me. His only good was that he was sexy and made you feel special for a few minutes. He manipulated everyone in his life and he was unreliable and shifty. I didn't like him. I didn't understand why Clare and Vaughn liked him. Vaughn seemed like he was a puppet to do whatever Mica wanted and I don't think he would stand up for himself or ever say no to Mica. He even admits that his physical relationship with Mica will never be over, even though it looked like he will have a long term relationship with Clare. I didn't think it would really work long term for he and Clare if that was true. It almost seemed like he was settling for Clare because he would never be able to have a relationship with Mica, due to Mica's flightiness and lack of ability to be in a relationship, along with his own fear of what society might think of him. I do think he liked Clare, but I don't think he loved her and I don't know if he ever would. I didn't feel any chemistry between them. I definitely don't think he would choose her over Mica and I don't think he could say no to Mica if he was asked to do something that might hurt Clare. I don't think he was willing to put her first when he had a relationship with Mica in any form. Mica is too manipulative and dangerous and I think he would screw it up for them, maybe even just because he was jealous of Clare having more of Vaughn's heart than he did. I don't think Vaughn and Mica's relationship/friendship was healthy for either of them. I didn't feel bad for Mica at all that he ends up alone because that is what he wanted and I don't think he's capable of a relationship. But I did feel bad for Clare. I think she deserves a relationship with someone who really loves her and puts her first and is not tainted. The ending to the book was very open ended. It is obvious that Clare and Vaughn want to invite Mica into their bed from time to time, but they practically have to beg him and it seems very sad and needy of them. I think that every time Clare and Vaighn are together, they will be thinking they wish Mica was there. There is no closure and no epilogue. I have very little faith that any of these three could be in a real relationship with each other in any form. Overall, I just didn't really get this book. It was less of a romance to me and more of a look at a toxic situation, in my opinion. The 2 star rating is for the writing. The story was interesting, but I didn't really enjoy this book. I'm not sure if I will continue to read more books by this author.

Eh this was missing something. Normally Cara McKennas mcs are super hot and the sex is super hot. Mica just seemed like a loser sleezeball. Vaughn seemed super sweet and I wanted more of him and Clare together. As most McKennas books go this was a HFN.

Downtown Devil is the second book in the Sins in the City trilogy by Cara McKenna. Each book is a standalone menage story. If menage stories are not your thing or bother you, this series is one you will want to skip. I have to say though that if you are looking for some seriously hot books, these have a ton of heat! There were things that I both liked and disliked with the first book in this series, Crosstown Crush, but I have to say that I ended up enjoying Downtown Devil more than I had CC. I am really looking forward to seeing what Cara McKenna has in store with the next in the series, Midtown Masters.
Clare is turning thirty and is starting to feel restless with her life. She works at a call center while trying to pursue her passion for photography. When finally getting a break, Clare must find subjects to model for cohesive collection in order to show at a local gallery. When she meets Mica at the local coffee shop, she approaches him to see if he would be interested in being one of her models. But what starts as getting a few shots for her collection quickly turns to more when they spend a steamy night together. The more time they spend together, the more Clare begins to wonder what the future could possibly be for them. But when things start to change with Clare, Mica and his best friend Vaughn, Clare finds herself in a situation she never expected.
I really liked these characters. I liked Clare's passion for photography and how she took something that could have offended her and turned into something beautiful. Showcasing the differences between people and their ethnicities was something that she celebrated and I loved that! I also loved that when presented with the opportunity to explore her desires and step outside her comfort zone, she welcomed it even while being a bit nervous. It was great to see a heroine embrace that and not be judged for it. I liked Mica and he was beyond sexy and charming. He also frustrated me at times, but over the course of the story it was easy to see that his past affected him greatly. I loved Vaughn though right from the second he was introduced. He was sexy as well as sweet, and I loved how he was with Clare right away. The three of them together were so smoking hot, but I knew that in the long term there was no way that they could all be together. I will admit I definitely had my opinions throughout this story about what I wanted to happen, but it was great to see things play out here and I felt that it happened naturally.
I won't say how things turned out and spoil the story, because this one was so good and I think it needs to just be read. Things progressed in a genuine way here and I really liked the way things happened. There were times that I felt like the sex scenes did take over the story a bit. While we did get some dialogue and character development, I felt like that part of this story did suffer from the amount of sex that was happening. Don't get me wrong, the story was still good, it just didn't have the amount of depth it could have had considering some of the backstory with each Mica and Vaughn. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, and I definitely recommend Downtown Devil as well as Crosstown Crush. This series is different, and I really like that Cara McKenna is exploring some desires that aren't always common, even in erotica books.

Oh Cara McKenna how you slay me with your erotic prose and storytelling! I drank the kool-aid and this author can seriously do no wrong.
Downtown Devil the second instalment in the Sins of the City series packs a punch of erotic power. As McKenna continues to portray characters open to exploring sexual dynamics in a three-way manner, you are guaranteed to learn something new, be entertained as well as have your mind blown with sexual desire. I’m serious…it’s been a while since I’ve had a case of the thigh clenching sweaty palm disease.
Now it’s not just about the sex but the layer of intrigue and character development created as we follow Clare, a budding artsy photographer on the brink of her 30th birthday as she tries to figure her way in life. God knows, I can relate because at exactly the same age I remember doing a self-evaluation of life achievements and being displeased with my short list. Despite the personal beat up, Clare tackles a special personal project by embarking on her first exhibit featuring identity and heritage. This of course serves as the means at which we meet one of her love interests, Mika, a bisexual half Malaysian and black, fucked up soul. Yes, I said fucked up. Scarred by a troubled upbringing Mika has some serious commitment issues and makes it known. His unique approach to relationships and sex serve as a catalyst for Clare’s sexual reawakening or should I say A-ha moment, so to speak.
Despite his lack of commitment Clare can’t seem to get Mika out of her system and is willing to take him any way she can even if she is aware that he is crushing on his roommate Vaughn who in turn is smitten by Clare. What an entangled web. With this commonality amongst the three of them, Clare and Vaughn indulge Mika’s erotic nature and fantasies and you as the reader embark on a glorious journey of sexual discovery.

And lastly, while the first part of the book is heavy on the sex you begin to develop a gradual sense for the characters, which for me was a nice little touch.
Kindred spirits, lovers of all things erotic and especially threesomes will definitely enjoy this little gem. Midtown Masters, the third instalment of Sins and the City series will be out sometime in February 2017, according to the authors page.

In the second installment to the Sins in the City series, Cara McKenna gives readers an energetic heroine in Clare. Her restless spirit grows bored as she nears the age of thirty and she's looking for something that will liven up her summer. What she doesn't realize is that entertainment will come in the form of a hot barista who is both beautiful inside and out. Though she says she wants to photograph her for her portrait exhibit, she cannot deny her attraction for him.
Mica is a wonderful character. Filled with charisma and a sexiness that oozes from the pages, McKenna amps up the heat very quickly. And she has to because not only does she have to create a believable romance between Clare and Mica, but she also brings in Mica's roommate, Vaughn into the mix.
The sex scenes in this book set this book on fire. While I was a little lukewarm about the first book in the series, McKenna amps up the passion in a big way with this book. Not only did I enjoy both heroes in this book, but Clare's openness and personality made this book a big win for me. This book is the perfect read for a hot summer night. With DOWNTOWN DEVIL, Cara McKenna proves why she is one of my favorite Erotic Romance writers out there.
