Jaden has proven his dueling skills to the other students at Duel Academy, but what drove him to start down the path to becoming a Duel Champion? When mysterious duelists from America arrive at Duel Academy, Jaden will find his skills, and his friendships, tested yet again!Years after Yugi's legendary battles, the game is so popular that special institutions dedicated to the art of the Duel have sprung up all over the world. Join Jaden Yuki and his pals at the Academy for the adventures of the next generation of Yu-Gi-Oh!
Another cute entry to the series, the second half definitely added a bit more intrigue after the first half gave us exposition and backstory! Jaden Yuki is still proving himself to be a tough contender at Duel Academy, but it's revealed he received his Terra Firma deck from a former champion now in a coma after dealing with a shadow monster. Whoa. And in present day, Zane comes back from his travels which prompts the Academy to have a tournament for the right to duel him! The issue is the two American students, the male in particular is rather shifty as he searches for cards with souls. Bastian and Chazz also duel but Bastian is defeated by the awesome Light and Darkness Dragon. Alexis is battling the other American Duelist and it's revealed she has an awesome Venus card.
I think the series is still finding it's feet; I like some of their ideas are intriguing such as the spirit cards and this shadow creature is crazy...but I'm still waiting for it to just get going...looks like it's starting to gain momentum and I'm interested in where it will go!
We finally get some backstory about how this Jaden got into dueling which we never really got in the original anime and we get Koyo who is the one the manga version of GX to give Jaden the Winged Kuriboh. It is also a cool choice to see the duel the two of them have in this volume as it is basically Anime Jaden vs manga Jaden which may be a little bit of the manga trying to take a jab at the anime with how the duel ends. We also get introduced to the main villain and the mcguffin cards which are the planet cards which it is going to be interesting how they are used and developed through out the story.
GX continues delving into Jaden's backstory and the history of his HERO deck. As well as introducing elements that'll play into the rest of the series. Kageyama writes an emotional history for Jaden's deck; as we see him meet a champion player with health problems. Who happens to be Ms. Hibiki's (a teacher at the academy) brother. Anime fans will recognize the deck Jaden uses; which is a nice nod to the inspiration for this manga. Jaden isn't the only one to get development though, as we also see a bit of Chazz's backstory and how much his spirit card means to him. When Zane Truesdale returns to the GX Academy for a visit with some of his American academy friends; they use this as a chance to have a quick tournament where the winner gets to duel him. Many characters jump right into this chance to duel one of the top players in the world. And the American students seemingly have an agenda of their own...
Overall I felt this was a great continuation from the first volume. Kageyama's art continues to be good and the focus on a narrative helps elevate this series.
Whereas the first volume gave us introductions to the main cast of characters the reader should focus on, this volume gives us back story to Jaden and his inspiration to duel. An inspiration that has drastic effects on the dueling world as a whole. This volume only improves upon what the first volume presented, and is worth picking this volume up!
I was hoping for a manga adaptation of the show, but apparently this series is more about the stories of various side characters. Nice for fans already into the show, but I wasn't hooked at all. A bit cool to see all the monsters but I didn't have any attachments to the characters, nor did I gain any. I won't come back to it unless I watch the show. I'm a huge fan of the original Yugioh series and was curious about GX. This manga was not the place to start.
Akhirnya, yah.
was prretty good but i didnt like the jaden battle cause tera firma isnt in TCG yet so the other guy shouldnt have won but he had winged kuriboh so it was kinda ligit
