I don't recommend reading volume eight right after the previous one. You have to let the steam off first before reading this. Volume 8 starts a new arc, even expanding the FMA world as Arakawa introduces characters from the east, oriental region of Xing, this of course is implied to be China.

The payoff in the Greed arc was totally awesome, so I also have high hopes for this one.

Another volume with an intriguing reveal for the homunculi's creator that adds more questions to the overarching plot regarding these evil creatures and their mission regarding the Philosopher's stone. The rest of it introduces us to two new and mysterious characters from the country of Xing who have a particular interest in the stone as well. While mostly a setup for things to come, it was an engaging story arc that promises a lot of great things to come.

Yours truly,

MAN oh man I'm such trash for this series but I'm kind of running out of things to say about each volume because I'm reading them so quickly. The pacing is really excellent and I'm a big fan of the art style. The characters in general are awesome and I love that there is plot twist after plot twist. It's great!

This was such a great volume and we have Bradley fighting Greed and saving the brothers and maybe finding their secrets and we come to know of his real nature. While Ed and Al return to Rush valley for repairs they are soon attacked by Ling Yao from the country of Xing and its a massive fight and some panels are gorgeous and it is this part we come to know of the country they live in aka AMESTRIA and its neighboring countries which will serve as antagonists in future maybe?

And finally we have the big revelations, reunions and there's an epilogues that sets up a future arc maybe in New Hiessgast. That one was weird but okayish.

This volume was a lot of fun with so many cool fight scenes, brotherly moments and finally getting to know more about this world and future threats and also seeing the Ouroboros/Sins and their "secrets" which just turns the series around for the better. I loved this one. And the art is gorgeous some funny scenes especially.

If this was a television show, this volume would be a good candidate for the start of the second season. We had a finale with an ominous fight (more a massacre, really), the first look at the main antagonist, a whole boatload of eerie foreshadowing and new unanswered questions, and the brothers learned a few good lessons and took a crucial step or two towards their ultimate goal. Then on to a new season with the introduction of a new major character and a couple quirky sidekicks, and a new direction for the heroes to explore and look forward to. Even Scar is making a return.

It's also where the (first) anime makes its final and decisive deviation from the manga. I don't have too many good memories of the anime from this point on, which may have further enhanced my enjoyment of the manga as a contrast, a better alternative.

Arakawa keeps introducing a slew of new characters every volume, but fortunately she keeps killing off the old ones so I don't feel overwhelmed. At least one of those deaths is pretty rough though as the bad guys become increasingly ruthless. Balanced against all the slapstick in other sections, this series is seeming more like a Coen Brothers movie each volume.

Tutto!

Definitely a very dark beginning for Volume 8. After the huge plot twist at the end of Volume 7 the rest of the fall out occurs in the start of Volume 8. It’s very dark and very sinister and while some pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place many more questions remain unanswered. I also thought the soldiers at the beginning wondering who wasn’t human (the chimeras and Greed or the alchemists and King Bradley) was very illuminating of where things are in the series right now.

The plot lightens up a bit after that as several new characters (and a whole new country!) gets introduced in the form of Xing. A country that uses a different form of alchemy that is more focused on the healing arts, and as a result thinks of alchemy in a very different way from the war-centric Amestris. Some very humorous scenes commence, especially the ones with the little girl Mei and her reaction on learning about Edward, the Fullmetal Alchemist.

Volume 8 was definitely a turning point in the series as new characters, new countries and a whole new viewpoint is brought into the manga. The moments of darkness offset with scenes of humor and witty banter that are true throughout the series really come to play in this volume. Another winning chapter in the Fullmetal Alchemist saga.

Gah, another epic plot twist I did NOT see coming!! I mean, I got the feeling one specific character was pretty bad to the bone so to speak, but I didn't realize HOW bad. Very shocked, but in a good way, though I definitely DON'T like his character! Plus, something tragic happens to another character and was pretty bummed because I really liked that character.

We get to meet some new characters though and really enjoyed how one of them is going to bring some good humor! I feel she is going to be SORELY disappointed when she realizes that her imagination is not going to meet reality. 😅 The other guy seems pretty cool! I'm hoping he is a good guy?

Really enjoyed the action in this one and how the story continues to go ever forward! Though I will confess that this one had surprisingly a lot more blood in it and was really bummed more people died in this one, even though it definitely reflects on one character purposely.

I'm nervously excited for the next volume!

Only rating the last couple 4 stars instead of 5 because they were more about the overarching, linking story than adventures with Ed and Al (which is what I prefer to read).

Volume 8 of Fullmetal Alchemist is the first firm step on the road that leads the manga away from the plot developments of the first anime series. It introduces characters and a new way of doing alchemy that weren't shown in the first series but are shown in Brotherhood.

First and foremost there is the kingdom of Xing which is looking for the secret of immortality. Competing half siblings, Prince Ling Yao and Princess May Chan come across the border on separate quests to find a gift that will make their clan immortal and therefore the strongest of all the Xing clans.

Meanwhile, Ed after all his doubts about his past, regains his memories. With them comes the certainty that he and Al must continue to look for a way to undo their mistakes. There's also an added urgency that he might be a ticking time bomb. How long, he wonders, can a soul stay separate from a body before both begin to rot?
This volume includes a map of Amestris and the surrounding countries. Amestris like Baum's Oz is placed in the center of things, with four countries, one in each of the cardinal directions and a desert or wasteland area separating of them from Amestris. Central, the capital, sits in the middle just like the Emerald City. Just as the Wizard was a false leader, so of course is Bradley, except he won't leave in a balloon if he's asked nicely.

First thing: for those of you reading this in email form, follow the link and check out the cover showing Ed practicing his unique form of unarmed combat. I'll wait.

Back? Done giggling/wondering what's wrong with me? Okay, now for the volume eight character review!

There are a lot of people I'd love to cover, and some of them I don't want to mention until later, to save some spoilers for those who haven't yet read any/all of the books (but do intend to do so), so after much deliberation, I've settled on Maes Hughes.

Lieutenant Colonel Hughes works for military intelligence. He lives, however, for his wife and daughter, to the point of annoying everyone around him with his effusive praise—and frequent photo sharing—of them. He's also Roy Mustang's closest friend and strong supporter, incredibly fond of the Elric brothers, generous, kind, deceptively intelligent, and a skilled knife-fighter.

Like so many others, he served his time in the war with Ishbal and, although not guilty of the wholesale slaughter committed by State Alchemists, he fired his share of bullets and was complicit in the murder of an incompetent superior officer. He was also good for keeping morale up and liaising between the regular soldiers and the alchemists—the former of whom were as terrified of the latter as the Ishballans were. Following a specific moment in the war, he was completely disillusioned by his country. Consequently, he and Mustang decided to work toward changing it so that more young men and women couldn't be forced into becoming murderers.

Maes is among the most popular characters in the entire run of the series, very likely because there is passion, dedication, loyalty, and a fierce desire to better life to everyone buried beneath a doofy exterior, and he can flip between the two with absolutely no warning.
