Twenty-seven-year-old heroine Ellen Shaw (from Boston) goes to London to take a job managing an antiquarian bookshop. Her twin sister (Fiona) urged Ellen to come to England and made all the arrangements. Fiona is also in London working for hero Hugh Weston (31), who owns the book store and the connecting wine bar. Fiona works at the wine bar. But Fiona seems to be missing. She wasn't there to greet Ellen when she arrived in England, and she didn't leave any messages at the flat that they were going to share. Since childhood Fiona sometimes disappeared for hours or days, and then, when she was back, she was full of excuses for her strange behavior. So at first, Ellen thinks Fiona is just being herself. But as days and days pass with no word from Fiona, Ellen begins to worry. Fiona and Ellen's boss, Hugh Weston, also has reasons to want Fiona back. His grandmother died in a fire in her home the day Fiona went missing, and Hugh has his suspicions about Fiona. Hugh also recently discovered that his now dead grandmother had a lot of money. So where is Fiona? Who is Fiona's mysterious fiancé that shows up and says not to worry? Is Fiona guilty of murder?
This was an enjoyable read, though maybe a little slow and confusing at times. I really like books set in England, so I loved the London setting! The heroine and hero were sometimes suspicious of each other, which added to the fun. I was curious to see what happened to Fiona. Another good Harlequin Intrigue.
This is one of Stella Cameron's very early Intrigues published in 1988 and it's my first read by her. Right from the beginning of the book, we're swept up into a realm of danger, dark secrets, and hidden desires. Hugh's life, past and present, seems to be riddled with confusion, nothing is what it seems. He readliy admits to himself that when it comes to Ellen, he doesn't know if he should be afraid for his life or whether he should follow his heart and hold on to her. Ellen's in the same boat... Hugh is a mystery, one moment he's kissing her with passion and the next he's aloof and distrustful. Connected by the disappearance of Ellen's sister, and by their undeniable attraction, these two take us down a road where there's a surprise around every bend. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Cameron!
Didn't realize when I picked this book up that is was "romantic suspense". The plot was predictable and I figured out the killer pretty quickly. The most interesting part of the book were the funny euphemisms for the sex scenes. This book was published in 1987 and writing was a lot less explicit then. I really can't recommend it.
I liked this book a lot right up until the ending, which I hated. I thought the author's wrap-up and "solution" to the mystery was overly complex and convoluted and improbable. What I did like about the book was the British bookstore setting and I thought the character of Ellen was very well done. So mixed feelings on this one but I would try another by this author.
Loved this book. Right off the bat you got sucked into mystery and suspense. Not to mention the list of Ellen and Hugh. Trying to nor only find the truth about what has happened with Ellen's twin sister, who is missing, and seeing where this relationship will take her throws you into a mix of emotions. I never would have guess the ending! Loved this book!!!
