Rate this book
How to heal and strengthen our boundaries to improve our relationships

In this groundbreaking, fascinating, and solidly researched book, bestselling author and social psychologist Jane Adams explains the concept of boundary intelligence, which is key in balancing intimacy and autonomy in any relationship. She then shows readers how to manage their psychological boundaries to heal, strengthen, and transform relationships. Using the Boundary Style Questionnaire, presented here for the first time, readers will analyze how and why they behave as they do with the people that matter most, discover how to resolve conflicts, and achieve both the intimacy and autonomy they need.

This book had one major drawback; the author's experience suggested that it is primarily women who have the type of boundary issues that would make them buy this book, so she wrote it totally with women in mind and addressed to women. There's only a half-hearted nod to men with boundary issues in the first chapter. Otherwise, her description of how boundaries function and the types of problems people develop with boundaries and how those problems play out in people's lives is quite adroit.

This book was my introduction to boundary issues and it was lacking in the introductory department. There was no overview of the concept; it just dove right in, so it took three chapters, and the re-reading of those three chapters, to catch on. I liked the interactive quiz, thereby personalizing the concepts. And I did finish the book more knowledgeable about the topic than when I started, though I still want to read the text for 'boundaries 101'.
