I was excited when I saw this book. A female FBI agent being the saver instead of the savee? Hells Yeah! As far as I'm concerned, we don't get enough of the woman being the ass kicker in romances today. Woman are just as capable as men, and our romances should reflect that.
Once I got into the book, I discovered that the female lead is a woman of color. I was startled for a minute, mainly because the cover is ambiguous enough that you don't really notice skin color. *Applause* Here's to us all becoming color blind and choosing a story about character, not race. Nicely played, Samhain.
There was also a very well thought out and intricate plot. The action moves along at a pretty good clip and though there were a lot of moving pieces, the story stayed on point and kept things progressing nicely. We knew who the bad guy was early on, and parts of his plot, but not all the pieces. That was strung out throughout the story, keeping you guessing and wondering. All the characters were well rounded and complex, creating a very believable world. There was a lot to like about this story.
So, what didn't I like? First off, not enough dialogue. Pages and pages of being told things. Person A did this, and Person B did that. Person C goes here and Person D went there. Stop telling me. Let the character's talk to each other and by extension, to me. Here we have this strong, sassy, smart mouthed, bad ass of an agent, and she spends more time talking to her herself than to others. *facepalm*
Another problem I had with the dialogue that was there, was that it felt very stiff. There was very little back and forth between the characters. It was mostly these several sentence long paragraphs, that felt nothing like a conversation. Take the following for example:
This starts well, but just keeps going and going. I really felt our hero could have interjected, interrupted, just something, anything, to help create a joint dynamic. Instead, she rants at him, then he has this multi-paragraph explanation in response. Each one is doing their own mini soliloquy, not actually working together to create an exchange or discourse. It just felt too unnatural and stilted to work for me.
That being said, would I recommend this read? Absolutely. Many people don't have the nit picky issues that I do with dialogue, and there was much to recommend besides the dialogue, which is my personal foible. If you are looking for a romantic suspense with complex characters and a tight plot, give this book a look. I gave this book 3 stars for being an enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is a hard book to write a review for. While I enjoyed the story line, there were definite problems I had with it as well.
The storyline was quite complex and the characters I found we pretty well rounded. I got quite wrapped up in finding out what was really going on as there is a lot of mystery behind the story and it kept the pages turning quickly.
However, that being said, I have to admit that I didn't like the way the color card was used. Skin color was capitalized like it was a statement instead of simply the color of their skin. Not to mention, that the main woman states blatantly that she "doesn't date White men". It took away greatly from the story in my opinion.
Then there is the fact that there were a few words that were used incorrectly, like the author used a thesaurus and didn't look up what those words actually meant.
Lastly, there were portions of the book that were told to the reader instead of showing us. Characters would be in the middle of a conversation and then instead of continuing the back and forth between their speech, we'd be told that one or the other simply said something.
Example:
"So you're going to try and find him, huh?" When he nodded, yes, Jae told him she was going with him and dropped her feet to the patio floor.
It really ruined the flow of the story in my opinion.
However, these are all issues that I have personally so I'm sure others will have no problem simply enjoying the plotline.

Ok I’ve been sitting on this review for some days trying to figure out my feelings on this book.
Jae is sent to protect a scientist she was once assigned to covertly investigate. From the beginning things have seemed weird about this assignment. As time goes on feelings develop, and the mystery unfolds.
So I liked this book, but when I was finished with this book I couldn’t accurately express my feelings. I liked the characters, but I never really felt that connected with them the way I wanted to. I felt like we are told that Jae is a kick ass agent, but we only see it occasionally. The amount of times she’s distracted or tricked my Trevor is kind of shocking. Also I liked Trevor he surprised me with his personality. When I read the blurb I was envisioning kind of a nerdy guy and he wasn’t.
We find out pretty early who the bad guy is but more details emerge as the story goes on which made it fun. Although the truth about what happened to his first test subjects is speculated but never fully confirmed so what really happened??
Also, I didn’t love his drugged confession on his feelings about his ex. I thought maybe he would’ve ended it with an expression of his feelings for Jae and how he was over that, but nope! What was the point?! Made me feel like he had lots of unresolved feelings and Jae needed to take some steps back.
Overall, it was a pleasant book. There was action, humor, suspense, a little mystery, and romance to keep you entertained. It just was missing something for me. Check it out for yourself!

Dr Grant & Jae
Very nice read, lot of twist and turns. Dr Trevor Grant's cover have been compromised and Agent Jae Randall will do everything in her power to protect him . It won't be easy, but Jae never failed an assignment and she is determined to save the man that starting to capturing her heart and the feeling seems reciprocated.

Action packed with an intricate storyline❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love my books just like my favorite movies, with plenty of action, road trips, fight scenes,, intrigue and murder. This book had me on lockdown with Special Agent Jae, Trevor/ Aiden and the crazy villian. Their banter and chemistry pulled me in, also. Jae is determined to save Trevor/ Aiden and complete her assignment!❤

This was very well written with a good amount of romance and suspense. It had many twists and turns that you will not see coming. This is the first I have read by this author but will not be the last.

I so loved this story! I love how Jae and Trevor learn to trust and love again! This story flowed like a movie in my mind. I didn't want this story to end!

Unbeknownst to her family, Jae Randall is an FBI agent. When she is sent to relocate a witness, All Hell breaks loose and the wrong decision can mean a matter of life or death.
Dr. Trevor Grant, who has been placed in the witness protection program, has an invention that can change the world, but can deadly in the hands of the wrong people, who happen to be after him. While the FBI is trying to keep him safe, he happens to fall in love with Jae, and the both of them have to decide if it's worth fighting for.
This was a very well written story, very captivating and well written. It had a lot of twists and turns with just enough romance for us romance junkies. Good job and I can't wait to see what else is in store from this author.

It's a romantic novel wrapped up in a espionage thriller whodunit...there's a mole in the FBI....special agent JR is sent in to deliver a package to safety..the package turns out to be Dr. Trevor Grant/Adian Cole....who is supposed to be save in a witness protection program and Jae had gone undercover previously posing as his assistant/Secretary....she thought that was the end...little did she know the twist and turns was going to lead into a dangerous quagmire and more importantly into her true love arms.

June 2, 2018Wow! This book kept me captivated. The FBI Special Agent Rae Randall was a determined agent in her field but kept her the knowledge of her job away from her family. They believed she was a secretary with limited skills. Her sister felt she was meek and had very little to offer. Unbeknown to them Agent Rae took on all her assignments with vigor especially her assignment protecting Dr. Trevor Grant.
In this book Bernice Layton details how, Jae’s team worked together and how an agent became a rogue agent and stopped at nothing to get what he wanted including murder. She also details how things look on the outside, but much is happening behind the scenes as well as before Dr. Trevor Grant was placed in the witness protection program (you have to read the book to find out why).
Even though this action book has gun fire, murder, manipulation and deceitfulness romance is intertwined amongst several of Rae’s team members unexpectedly.
This is a great read you will not be able to put it down until you have read the last word. I highly recommend this book.
I’m looking forward to reading more of Bernice Layton’s books.
