Buchanan Book Three

Pride weekend is over, but for Nathan Lucas, the summer is just heating up. He appears to have it all. He’s tall and blond, ripped and handsome, and half owner of Buchanan House, a successful gay retreat on Oregon’s beautiful central coast. But his joie de vivre hides a fear of abandonment. When he was twelve, his mother had triplets, and instead of the cherished only child, Nathan became a scapegoat for his exhausted parents, and he has never truly dealt with that pain.

Portland chef Paulie Nesbitt is head over heels in love with Nathan. They’ve been drinking buddies with benefits for years, while Paulie has not-so-secretly yearned for more. Paulie’s extra pounds and self-doubt have kept him from acting on his feelings. Their friends know they would make the perfect couple, but Nathan and Paulie will have to let go of past insecurities if they want a future together.

The ‘Buchanan House’ series, just like the fictional B&B that plays a major role in it – almost like a separate main character - is something very special. The idea of this fictional guest house on the Oregon Coast that is set up for the LGTBQ+ crowd is the brainchild of best friends Eric, a former line cook, and Nathan, who has more than enough flair to be a host. Eric found the love of his life in Tim, the handyman, and they are married. Nathan is in a more complicated situation, and this second volume (number three in the original edition) is his and Paulie’s story.

Reviewed for Just Love Romance

Tiny House is the third book in the Buchanan House series. I haven’t read the first two but I didn’t feel like I needed to in order to keep up with the story. You could tell in certain situations it probably would have been more enjoyable to know the history but I looked at it as that I was just the new friend who’s still getting to know everyone. Seems fitting since the diverse cast are very loyal and supportive to their friends and open to making new ones as well.

The book is supposed to be a romance about two longtime friends, Paulie and Nathan, but they barely speak to each other even on the rare occasions when they’re together. It made it difficult to see any chemistry between them and I couldn’t bring myself to care whether or not they would get their HEA. Thankfully the story is told from dual POV because the book would’ve been very one-sided otherwise. There was much more interaction between each MC with the side characters which isn’t a terrible thing but it didn’t leave much room for me to get to know Paulie and Nathan as a potential couple.

What I took away from this story is that for as much as they love each other, they won’t allow themselves to act on their feelings until they’ve overcome their issues.

“Nobody has to be perfect to be loved. Just being you is enough.”

Nathan has to work through feeling abandoned by his family and Paulie must get past his negative self-image. These issues are brought up several times and they do end up finding themselves in a better place but it happens with a lot of show and little tell. Maybe it’s just me but I’d rather skip the implications and go along for the ride as they fully explore exactly what it is they need to do to get what they want.

I felt the writing was disjointed and hard to follow at times. Grammatical errors and a ton of abrupt sentences thrown in for emphasis were a distraction in the flow of the narrative. I found myself rereading passages to be sure I was fully grasping what the characters were trying to say. I also would’ve liked to have seen more emotional reactions inserted into the dialogue when the characters were speaking at length. This wasn’t a major issue but there were times when I thought I had an idea of what the tone should be but since no description was given I was left to interpretation. On a positive note, I will say that Descoteaux does a good job describing all the details of the setting. I was ready to pack my bags and move right into that cottage with the ocean views.

Aside from a few minor peaks in the story arc this one flatlines most of the way through. Holding out for a grand gesture at the end was a bit of a cliché and sends the message that if you do absolutely nothing to earn your love interest’s heart, doing something extreme will automatically have them leaping into your arms and bed. The fantastical events that follow had me hoping that each page turned would be the last.

Trigger Warning: Several of the characters use alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism and while it’s mentioned that the worst offender should quit the unhealthy lifestyle, it’s never fully addressed and treatment is not explored. This may be a sensitive topic for some.

I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review. Grammatical issues mentioned above may change in the final version.

I got an ARC of this book.

This book should really be titled “Nathan gets his head out of his ass”. The pairing in this book was SO HEAVILY hinted at in the first one, that I knew it was coming even without reading the book description. I am a fan of the pairing, but there were so many execution issues for me.

It isn’t diverse or edgy to have a chubby character who you then talk about their weight constantly. At one point one of the characters literally rubs the character’s stomach and made a joke. The stomach size of the character seems to vary widely from gay fat to Santa throughout the book. There is so much fat shaming by everyone that I am tired. I was excited to see a chubby character, but the way chubby is handled in this series leaves a lot to be desired.

There was a trans plot that was really weird, but not unpleasant. I am happy there is now a trans guy in the cast. I didn’t like how his plot ended up shitting on poly relationships. It didn’t even feel accurate for the characters who were just awful about them to be awful. The character who slept around a lot and had a triad going? Suddenly being against poly relationships and refusing to do anything but give warnings about them? Ick. It is also 100% unbelievable that they would not know ANYONE in a poly relationship that was “successful”, because non-monogamy is so common in the queer community. Also, what is a “successful” relationship? Is it one that ends in marriage? Because that would rig everything against the poly triad that can’t legally get married. Is it a time limit? Because there are so many abusive and awful monogamous relationships that last lifetimes. This whole scene just icked me out hardcore.

I have the same sex issues in this one that I had with the others. Inconsistent condom usage. For a person that knowingly and willingly sleeps around, they would either know better or they would have more STIs than this book allowed for. It felt like a plot hole at this point.

The idea of this book was so charming and wonderful. I want to take the idea and just erase so much of the other stuff. A grand gesture of getting a custom house built to announce you love someone? Hell yeah. Two people finally getting together who have been in love forever? SIGN ME UP. The rest of the stuff this book offered, no. I haven’t even touched on the random backstory drama of one of the leads.

4.5 stars. Third in the Buchanan House series and third I've read. Set in coastal Oregon, the series focuses on relationships that find fulfillment, usually after an angst filled half book of unacknowledged desire. The extended "family " allows for characters to recur in subsequent tales, encouraging sequential reading.
I'll admit that I fell in love with the camp concept of a restored resort with ocean beaches, woods, vistas, and a limited number of rooms. Eric and Nathan have created an oasis where LGBT and friends are comfortable as the drama rolls forward. In this episode, Nathan finally comes to terms with his long term passion for Paulie, a master chef in Portland. Family reconnects, trans Alex firms up the relationship with Derek, old flames and new kick the drama into high gear. And there's lots of delicious food being plated throughout.
My reason for not awarding a full 5 stars is that I felt a bit overwhelmed by the inner turmoil for the major players - possibly influenced by the book read immediately before where it stopped over the gunnels.

I can officially add Charley Descoteaux to my auto-buy list from now on. I loved this series, and this book made me hope with all ten fingers and ten toes crossed that it's not over yet.

The first thing I loved is that there is much, much more to this story than just the romance between Nathan and Paulie. I normally dislike "will they or won't they" type plots, but it worked perfectly here in large part because it wasn't the only thing going on. These two men have a lot of history, both individually and with each other. It would have been unfair to both of them if they'd wrapped it up tidily on page three.

I loved Nathan already in Buchanan House, and I was so ready to see him get his happily ever after. But Paulie, for me, was the one I related to. Their story isn't a slow-bloom or even a traditional friends-to-lovers tale. It's a complicated dance, and neither of them wants to give in first. When they finally--finally!--get together, as we know they will, the moment matches the whole tone of their relationship. It's sweet, steamy, and has just a hint of the insecurities which characterize their love story.

The side characters are fantastic, and a couple of them make me think this isn't the last we'll see of Buchanan House and its inhabitants. There are also some indications we may get to see some other complex relationships play out. The secondary characters are as interesting and have as much depth as the main couple.

About the only thing I can say I wasn't sure about was the ending. It was great, but it felt like a little too much, a little too long. But that's for sure personal preference, not a flaw with the story.

This is not a book for people who want a very traditional romance. It's quirky, interesting, and touches on some deep and emotional subjects, such as Paulie's weight, Nathan's self-image, and tricky family dynamics. This isn't done in a hyper-emotional way it's handled with humor and heart. As someone who can get bogged down in too many heavy feelings, I prefer the lighter touch, though other readers may feel differently.

All in all, this was a great addition to the series and only served to fuel my hope for more about these delightful characters.

Tiny House by Charley Descoteaux is the third book in her Buchanan House series and is the story of Nathan Lucas and Paulie Nesbitt.

Nathan and Paulie have been friends for quite some time. They have played, studied, worked, and lived together over the years each secretly harboring feelings for the other, but never acting on them. Yes, they have hooked up, and yes, everyone else sees their shared bond. However, these two guys do just about everything wrong.

EACH SECRETLY HARBORING FEELINGS FOR THE OTHER

Nathan is part owner of Buchanan House, a gay retreat on Oregon’s beautiful central coast. He is a stunning blond with love and trust issues perpetuated by his family history. Paulie is a successful chef and insecure with his physical appearance.

There is a lot happening in Tiny House. So much so it tends to detract from the Nathan-Paulie story. Significant time is spent building the Buchanan House family with its transitioning characters, romances-a-plenty, and family drama. All of which is well written with promise for each as its own storyline. Don’t get me wrong, the family that is being built here is beautiful, accepting, caring, and warm.

FAMILY WITH ITS TRANSITIONING CHARACTERS, ROMANCES-A-PLENTY, AND FAMILY DRAMA

The main characters Nathan and Paulie are an adorable couple who fumble along, loving each other from the sidelines. They are sweet and funny, but blind to the strong connection that exists between them. The reasoning behind their blindness is understandable, especially given their histories and perceptions of life.

My mind sees Nathan as the stunning blond Jock type, and Paulie as the handsome “dad bod” sporting sexy, reddish scruff. The pairing and connection that is finally reached between them is heartwarming and their connection with the reader is strong.

THE PAIRING AND CONNECTION THAT IS FINALLY REACHED BETWEEN THEM IS HEARTWARMING

Tiny House left me satisfied and I suspect the character building is all setup for the future escapades that will happen at Buchanan House. Will I visit Buchanan House again? Why yes, I will happily enter this gay retreat anytime.

Charley Descoteaux did it again. This is another winner in the Buchanan House series. And if is s full of all over the place emotions it is not even a joke.

I already love Paulie and Nathan from the first two books in the series and I could tell by their interactions in the previous two books that these two men had some serious feelings for one another but they were nothing more then best friends and sometimes hook up buddies with no strings attached even though they both wanted so much more from each other. In this book we (the readers) get to see so much more of what the issues is these two men have with not being honest with the other about their feelings.

It is sad really because Paulie and Nathan missed out on so much time together because of their different insecurities. They have known and been in love with each other for 18 years but they have never maned up and told each other how they felt until it was almost too late for the both of them.

Paulie has issues with not feeling good enough for Nathan because of his extra weight and he does not feel that he is good enough because he cannot see himself the same way Nathan does.

Nathan has issues with not feeling good enough for Paulie because he has abandonment issues and is afraid he is a bad person inside and that no one stay once they realize that even though that is the furthest from the truth.

I broke my heart that these two men loved the other so much and completed one another but they was both so insecure with themselves that they was willing to let the other go because of it.

As stated before this book has so many emotions in it and I cannot wait till the next book comes out. I can only hope the next book will be about Kyle, Brandon or Evan. Those are three that I am interested in seeing what is to come for them either separately or together.

Great job thus far on this series and cannot wait for more to come.

Three and a half stars!
I was so excited for this book because I wanted Paulie and Nathan’s story. After seeing them in the first book I knew they’d be so good together! The story didn’t live up to my expectations as much as I would have liked. I knew there would be some angst and they would be apart for part of the book because of the obstacles they face. But it went on too long. I reached a point reading the story that I stopped understanding why they were apart. Literally everyone else in the story was telling them to stop being dramatic. Both Nathan and Paulie were repeatedly told they both love each other and how obvious it was to everyone around them. I needed both of them to figure it out a good three or four chapters earlier.
Once they did, they were so beautiful together. They are so happy together and their love is so complete and full it bursts from the page. Both Nathan and Paulie’s need to make happy, and affection for their friends is wonderful. They work to ensure others are on the road to happiness and find their own happy endings as well.
I love the family created in these stories with all the people involved in making Buchanan House a success and those they’re brining into the fold. There are still plenty others that I want to see happy endings for and people I want to grow and be happy. I hope the series continues because I will gladly keep reading.

Tiny House (Buchanan House #3) by Charley Descoteaux
3.5 stars
M/M Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

I have only read the first book in this series. I enjoyed it. However, this was not my favorite story.

Nathan and Paulie have been friends forever. However, they have been too shy or scared to tell each other that they have feelings for each other.

I think I had an issue with this story because there was so much more going on than just their story. It was less about them, and more about this group of people who have banned together to create their own family.

Then, you throw in the wrench of Nathan's family coming in to the picture again and it becomes even less about his relationship with Paulie.

I loved the two main characters - they were fun, playful and sweet, however, their chemistry was somewhat lacking for me too. Maybe that had more to do with the premise stating that Paulie had body issues... I'm not really sure, but they just had ho-hum chemistry for me.

Overall, this was not a great story for me. However, I did enjoy the sweet moments within the story for all of the couples and do hope that Evan gets a story too.

This book was told from multiple POV and I really enjoyed this book much more then book one. This book still has some problems in the author writing as it took me some time to connect with the characters. I really prefer an almost immediate connection as then when I read I’m not struggling. I was glad to see that Nathan was finally getting his own story. However this book seems to deal more with “Tiny House” rather than Nathan and Paulie’s relationship. I did enjoy seeing them fumble around each other and was excited to see them fall in love. It seemed to build up slowing and that was good as Nathan and Paulie have been friends forever. This book had a lot going on and I loved the direction the author took. I can’t wait to read more from this series.

I didn't think I'd like this one best so far. The first didn't have enough chemistry, the second didn't have enough...well anything. I liked the duel POV in this one.
