This book sets us down in the middle of the excitement. Plus we get some of Jack Harkness. So, win, win! 😊

Trapped in the Arena of Fear with no memories, the Doctor, Gabby, Cindy, Jack, and more fight for their lives against aliens and each other! Then an old folktale in Dewbury turns sinister, and Cindy gets trapped in the seemingly infinite TARDIS corridors.

This volume felt very dense. I'm not sure if there's some Free Comic Book Day issues or something in here, but it definitely feels bigger than just the usual five issues.

The Arena Of Fear ties up the cliffhanger from the last volume, although it does it in a roundabout way that probably could have been solved in one issue. The witch two-parter also seems to drag its feet getting to the point, but the ultimate reveal is one that made me sit up and take notice again, so it has that in its favour. And then the one-off in the TARDIS was fine, but felt like filler stuff. A weak ending to the Year, that's for sure.

The Ebonite mystery continues, while Anubis' presence is still felt at the edges of the volume as well. I do hope we get some closure to some of this soon, since we've now got another mystery to add to the mix after the end of the witch story.

Eleanora Carlini and Elena Casagrande are the main artists once again, for better or worse, so at least there's some stability in the artwork even if the story is a bit all over the place.

Not bad, not great, could probably do with a kick in the pants in terms of story momentum, but it's still better than the worst volume of the run, so I'm content enough. I just feel like it could be doing more.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor, Vol. 5: Arena of Fear by Nick Abadzis is my least favorite of this Tenth Doctor comic series so far. It has its moments and it was good to see Jack again, but it's a bit confusing and the pacing is off so some of it really drags.

10 ciltten oluşan bu seriyi an itibariyle yarılamış oldum.

This was a little uneven, but otherwise a very enjoyable read. Had the first story arc, Arena of Fear, been developed further, it might have held up to an even better rating. It was great to see Captain Jack in the comic (and it only leaves me salivating for the upcoming Torchwood comic), I could certainly have stood to have more of him in the comic. I found the second story arc, The Wishing Well Witch, the weakest but it was still enjoyable. The last one, The Infinite Corridor, felt more like a teaser of things to come as it alludes to past adventures and builds toward an unfinished climax. It also felt like one of those episodes that never leaves the TARDIS but still offers some interesting stuff for the actors to do.

I do appreciate the efforts of these ongoing Doctor Who series to tell more serialized stories with progression for its characters. And this book kicked things off in a grand style with the current batch of companions and the Doctor himself all without their memories on a strange alien world. How they recover themselves and eventually escape their prison and defeat the antagonist does make for some fun adventuring.

The second arc builds on the larger mysteries tied to our companions and how it may connect to a bigger story beyond and I appreciate how things are panning out. There's a lot to uncover and the thread of the alien Egyptian gods remains and I look forward to things coming back into focus.

the tenth doctor adventures are probably the furthest from the show. he has new companions, plus Captain Jack from time to time, and they find themselves in some wild places.
so not really that different from the show lol. fun reads

Continuing the adventures of the Tenth Doctor and New Yorker Gabby Gonzalez. The first of these, the title story, has a rather cliched arena situation crossed with a much better than usual take on the characters losing and recovering their memories. Gabby’s friend Cindy joins the TARDIS at the end of the story, though to be honest I have difficulty distinguishing between their characters. The second story, “The Wishing Well Witch”, is a pleasing little vignette set in an English village that is not quite Stockbridge. The third story sets us up for the next volume with the Osirians returning to the fore.

This book collects Issues 6-10 of Year 2 of the Tenth Doctor.

Issues 6 and 7 is the titular Arena of Fear story with our characters all separated and without their memories, divided into two groups and some even are being used by the villains who took away everyone's memory. The story is okay, but it doesn't really going anywhere interesting, particularly with the build up in the last volume, you'd really expect something more epic. It felt like Jack Harkness was inserted to have a Captain Jack guest star and that the writer missed a key distinction with Jack's character.

The Free Comic book day special has Cindy joining the Doctor and Gabby in the TARDIS. It's fun, if a bit frantic and hard to follow.

Issues 8 and 9 has the Doctor visiting a paranormal book fair because of course you go to a book fair when you could anywhere in time and space. Gabby is doubting Cindy's place as the newbie in the TARDIS. There's possession, weirdness, and a bit of mystery. It's a fairly good story with a bit of pathos for the Doctor.

Issue 10 is another trapped in the TARDIS story with Cindy lost and the TARDIS possessed. It's very pacy and it sets thing up for another confrontation with the Osirans who dominated Volume 3.

Overall, the volume is okay. It's hurt by the art is not being quite as pretty as previous volumes but also, it feels like some things are done just because they can. The addition of Cindy to the TARDIS crew doesn't seem to add much. It's true that in the previous series of 11th Doctor stories, Rob Williams had two additional companions and it worked, but they had reasons to be there, Cindy just doesn't seem to, but we'll find out how it works out in the next volume.

This one was enjoyable, but I found it very unmemorable in the grand scheme of things. Twenty minutes after I was finished, all I remembered was that Jack Harkness was in the first story -- a carry-over from his brief appearance in the middle of the previous volume -- and that there are two short TARDIS-bound stories (one a special entry for World Comic Day, and the other a one issue adventure.)

Sadly, I'm still not enjoying Cindy's presence in the TARDIS. I don't think we had long enough with Gabby by herself as a companion to give her character any particular trials or growth, and then throwing her best friend, Cindy, into the mix before we have any solid character basis for Gabby leaves both of them feeling bland and interchangeable. And then we have Earth-bound semi-companions, as well as guest characters, and Jack Harkness, and I just have no time to care about any of these people. It's sad when I think a character like Jack Harkness serves no purpose to the story because I love him so much, but I spent all of the story just wondering, "Why is he here?"

Not a terrible entry of stories, but two collections into season 2 of this comic line, and I already feel like the story line is getting stale. Here's hoping the Doctor facing off against the Osirans in the coming issue brings some excitement to this story line again.

The return of Jack Harkness wasn't as big of a deal as one might have expected. And the arguing between Gabby and Cindy when the latter was getting used to the TARDIS was kinda funny but also kind of annoying. The book fair story was okay, and then the last one leaves off with more to come next volume. Somehow, this Anubis story arc hasn't been as interesting as what was done in The Eleventh Doctor Year Two, and that's weird for me to say.

There's a certian sameness to all of these stories from Nick Abadzis. I wish he'd step away some from all of the made up scientific BS and produce some more grounded stories. The stuff in the Arena of Fear picked up on the Caveman story of the last volume. Then we get an English town that has a "witch". These stories all feel pretty formulaic and aren't as good as stories featuring the other Doctors.

I loved the memory-loss aspect of the start of this, where no-one is quite sure who they are. The gradual build up was fantastic, but then things sort of petered out towards the end with only a teaser of what's coming. Still, an enjoyable read.

A quality set of Tenth Doctor stories, now with Cindy joining Gabby as a companion. I would actually rate it slightly higher, had the first story been a little longer and the rest not mainly been setup for better things later... but it's still good stuff! (B+)

I couldn't read it. Couldn't finish it. If you think this is going to be like one of the chapter books (which were ok) then you will be disappointed. I don't know why, but I could not connect with the characters or the plot.

I really enjoyed the conclusion to the cliffhanger from the previous volume, but the following stories weren't as strong. I'm not sure if the addition of Cindy really works.

The opening story feels like a rehash of the closing one from the previous volume, with Jack’s presence being superfluous and adding little. The second story has more potential but doesn’t feel explored well and suffers from a change of artist halfway through. Cindy makes a good addition to the crew though.
