I loved loved loved this book! 💛
This book is perfect for any beginner/intermediate learner of cursive writing ✍🏼 the way this book is written along with the practices attached are very helpful to understand very important points to not only cursive but lettering in general as a visual learner I loved having more than just singular letters to practice too there is also words, sentences and more to go over!
She covers a lot & packs it nicely in this short read. 🤍💐
Recently due to my Pen Palling hobby i’ve been trying to practice and pick up more cursive and better handwriting, & this book helped tremendously with just one read I went over some of the practices mentioned & I saw a bit of improvement which motivated me to keep going and learning more!! definitely would recommend!!

Maybe I'm dumb. I bought this hoping to reconnect with my inner calligraphy writer that I became when I was in eighth grade. I was pretty good then but have become rusty. I was not prepared to find the modern cool squiggles inside. I also didn't find the instructions to learn to be helpful. However the "fonts" in the back to learn were cute. A friend of mine picked up the art of modern calligraphy in minutes. Sooooo maybe it's me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is a very simple introduction to hand lettering and covers the very basics to get started in hand-lettering. I would describe this as a workbook, as it gives specific examples and lots of space for you to practice your own techniques, without getting too caught up with lengthy and unnecessary descriptions. Great for beginners!

Inhalt:

Das Buch beginnt mit einem kurzen Abschnitt über die Schriftgrundlagen. Hier werden Fragen wie „Was ist eine Serife, was bedeutet Sans Serif und was ist ein Haarstrich“ geklärt. Auch die Basics werden aufgegriffen. Was ist Faux Calligraphy und wie bekomme ich den „verstärkten Abstrich“ am besten hin? Zwei Seiten stellen Materialien wie Stift und Papier vor. Du brauchst wirklich nicht viel, wenn du das erste Mal mit dem Handlettering beginnen möchtest.

Es folgen einige Seiten, auf denen das kleine Alphabet geübt werden kann. Großzügige Übungsfreiflächen laden zum direkten Lettering im Buch ein. Im Anschluss an die sich wiederholenden Übungen erhältst du dann zusätzlich eine kurze Übersicht des Alphabetes.

Auf den weiteren Seiten erklärt die Autorin, wie man Buchstaben am besten verbindet. Wann kannst du den Stift absetzen, welche Buchstaben solltest du am besten in einem Zug lettern? Das Lettern von mehreren Buchstaben im Verbund ist, gerade am Anfang, nicht einfach. Mit Hilfe von einigen Übungsaufgaben, die du ebenfalls direkt im Buch ausführen kannst, wirst du dieses neuerworbene Wissen ausführlich vertiefen können.

Bounce Lettering bzw. das Tanzen der Buchstaben sieht oft richtig schön aus. Wer sich schon mal daran versucht hat, wird feststellen, dass es gar nicht so einfach ist. Wie bei vielem im Leben gilt auch hier: Übung macht den Meister. An Beispielwörtern kannst du deine Fähigkeiten auch auf diesem Gebiet schulen.


Ein optisch ansprechendes Lettering wird oft durch die Kombination verschiedener Schriftarten geschaffen. Die Autorin stellt in ihrem Buch vier Alphabete vor und zeigt dir, wie du sie mit einem kleinen Trick optisch noch ein wenig aufhübschen kannst.

Weiterhin findest du neun Schmuckelemente zum Verzieren von Letterings und ein paar Anregungen für schlichte Schnörkel, die deinem Lettering das gewisse Etwas verleihen werden.

Wie gelingt dir ein schlichtes, aber wirkungsvolles Lettering? Kombiniere die Worte optisch ansprechend, verwende verschiedene Schriftarten und setze vielleicht noch ein kleines Schmuckelement als Eyecatcher in die Ecke. Schon hast du ein perfektes Lettering erschaffen. Das ist manchmal einfacher gesagt als getan. Beispiele und Schritt-für-Schritt-Erklärungen der Autorin werden dir helfen von einer Skizze zum Bild zu gelangen.


Großzügige Übungsseiten am Ende des Buches helfen dir ein paar kurze Sätze nachzulettern und damit den Stil der Autorin noch einmal zu vertiefen.


Aufmachung:

Handlettering – Dein Einstieg in die Kunst des kreativen Schreibens kommt in einer sehr edelen und zugleich stabilen Aufmachung daher. Mit einem Format von 24,5 x 24,5 cm ist das Buch relativ groß, aber zugleich auch nicht unhandlich. Eine hochwertige goldene Spiralbindung nebst goldener Schmuckkanten machen dieses Buch zum optischen Highlight im Buchregal und zum perfekten Geschenk.


Eigene Meinung:

Als ich das Buch ausgepackt habe, war ich begeistert von der schönen Aufmachung des Buches. Auch der Letteringstil der Autorin, die unter dem Pseudonym Chalkfulloflove zeichnet, gefiel mir auf den ersten Blick sehr.

Ein flüchtiger Blick ins Buch offenbart bereits, dass es hier sehr viele Übungsseiten/Leerseiten gibt, auf denen der Leser direkt mit dem Lettering beginnen kann.

Kniffe und theoretische Grundlagen findet man in diesem Buch leidlich vor. Vielmehr setzt die Autorin auf Best practice-Beispiele, denn Übung macht ja bekanntlich den Meister.

In Handlettering – Dein Einstieg in die Kunst des kreativen Schreibens werden, wie der Name schon verrät, erste Grundlagen vermittelt. Das Buch eignet sich für Anfänger. Fortgeschrittene Letterer werden hier nur wenig Neues erfahren.

Einige Autoren von Handletteringbüchern raten, nach jedem Buchstaben den Stift abzusetzen und eine Pause einzulegen. Chalkfulloflove zeigt hier eine neue Variante: Das Schreiben der Buchstaben in einem Zug und das Absetzen an Stellen, an denen die Buchstaben mit einem linksgeformten Abstrich beginnen. Dieses Vorgehen ist nicht einfach. Doch die Autorin lässt einen nicht im Stich. Einige Beispiele laden auch hier wieder zum Üben ein.


Fazit:

Handlettering – Dein Einstieg in die Kunst des kreativen Schreibens sieht super aus und wirkt aufgrund seiner Aufmachung edel und hochwertig. Ein ideales Buch-Geschenk, eine Sehenswürdigkeit im heimischen Bücherregal.
Nach dem Üben in diesem Buch wird der Letterer den schlichten, aber optisch sehr ansprechenden und wirkungsvollen Stil der Autorin beherrschen. Viele Leerseiten laden zum direkten Lettering im Buch ein.

Dieses Buch eignet sich für Anfänger. Die optisch ansprechende Aufmachung und der eingedampfte Inhalt verstehen es, die Schwellenangst zu nehmen. Fortgeschrittene Letterer werden hier aber nicht viel Neues erfahren.

This was very easy to follow and it didn't take that long for me to get the hang of each of the different styles and how to write in them. I've always wanted to learn how to do calligraphy, and this was a foot in the door for me into it.

I checked this out from the library, so I didn't use the book in its intent as a write-in book. Still, I've always loved hand lettering and love seeing it used so often. The instructions were pretty basic in terms of the lettering. I would've liked to see more words and phrases demonstrated, but I suppose this is only meant to be an introduction.
