East Side Stories

Rate this book
East Side Stories is a collection of 18 completely new stories, plus ‘The Othona Valediction’ which has so far only been published as an E-story, and therefore not accessible to anyone who only reads ‘real’ books.
All the stories are set in locations down the east side of England, from Hadrian’s Wall to the Thames. This is an area well known to me, as I have lived in Teesside, North Yorkshire, the Pennines, Norfolk and Essex during my life in England, before moving to southern Spain in 1994.
Although some of the locations where the stories are set are fictitious, such as Mucklethwaite-in-Dale and Spelt, others are placed in actual villages.

I was born in 1934 in the small seaside village of Marske-by-the sea in Cleveland, North Yorks. Over the years I have had many different jobs – quantity surveyor, lecturer, homoeopath, acupuncturist, guest house and restaurant owner (with my wife Wendy) and sundry others. I have lived in North Yorks, Essex, Norfolk, and Cumbria, and for the last 20 years in the Axarquía in Andalucía.
My main hobbies have been hill and long distance walking, sailing, and some sports. All of these have influenced my writing. All my life I have been an avid reader of all sorts of genres, from minor classics through to modern fiction, and a wide range of nonfiction. Probably my favourite genre is mystery, suspense and crime, with writers such as Raymond Chandler, Marjorie Allingham, Agatha Christie and Michael Gilbert being the earliest influences. More recently of course I have read many others – too many to list without this becoming a telephone directory.
I have always been attracted to writing. My first attempt was as a child in the scouts during the war. The scout troop brought out a magazine, supposedly the first of many and asked for contributions. I wrote the first of a proposed serial about French scouts who helped the Marquis (there had been stories of this happening in reality on the BBC). Luckily a second edition was never produced, as I had no idea of where the story was going next. It taught a good lesson – always have some idea of what the plot is, even if at times the characters or the plot line develop in some ways of their own violition.
Fortunately, my next attempts thirty years later were more successful, when I published technical articles and books in both Construction Technology and Economics, and in Natural Medicine. Recently I have turned to crime, (in the literary not the actual sense) mainly short stories, many of which have been published in English language magazines here on the Costa Del Sol.
Some years ago, I found reading at first difficult and then impossible, due to age related macular degeneration. This was when I discovered Kindle, with the advantage that the print can be blown up to a size that I can still read. Through this, I found that authors could self publish on amazon, and I published my first book, “Andalucían Mysteries”, in 2013, followed by “More Andalucían Mysteries” in 2014. All these stories are set in the Costa del Sol area, many of which were previously published in local magazines.
Shortly a third collection, “Bagatelle”, will be published, some of these stories are also set in this region, but others are in differing locations.
