Eve isn’t just having a bad day; she’s having a bad life. Feeling like she’s running out of options—her job’s going nowhere and she’s qualified to do jack—she decides marrying a man, even one old enough to be her father, is her only chance to escape the humdrum. But as she’s putting her dubious nuptial plans into action other men enter her life and present her with alternative choices. The problem is in the current fog of her thinking, she can’t see which are the sure bets and which are going to make her wish she’d never been born.
This is an AMAZING book. It has a great storyline with twists that will keep you gripped to the end. Once I started to read it I couldn't put it down (literally). I loved it soooooo much that I would highly recommend it any reader especially if you enjoyed other books by L.T. Saunders and if you love to read romance but not the boring kind of books!!!
This wasn't quite what I expected, but it proved itself a good read.
Amazon have this classified as a thriller, which I love. It's not really though. A contemporary fiction with a crime subplot is more accurate - that side doesn't kick in until about the last 50 pages. It's all over far too fast and, whilst curious, I failed to be thrilled or intrigued by that aspect simply because it was so obviously about to wrap up by the time it started.
Despite falling short in the genre I was hoping for, Saunders proves very adept as a social observer and commentator. The characters are very believable. It was refreshing reading about grounded, normal people. Even the book's aristocracy are more normal than most. It's not about people beaten down, or hidden heroes, it's about a woman who works in sales. This insight and writing carried this book along.
Oh, and if you're curious the love interest subplot actually delves into romance in places. Not really my choice, but I must give credit that the author's writing skills still kept me reading. And that's the thing, Saunders is a good author. This is an indie published book, which is why I didn't read too much into the cover art which is a clue of the impending romance. It's also something that isn't obvious enough, sure there are a few small mistakes in places, but it feels more like an early draft from an established publishing house. Those manuscripts just waiting for someone to read through and help the author find their voice.
That voice will no doubt come. There are some impressive touches that show an author who truly cares about their work. Someone who has their own style already, and could develop it much further. Whether romance, or thrillers (and I believe Saunders has the potential for something bone chilling should the mood strike), or some other branch of fiction - Saunders is one to watch. Forget the cover, forget the genre - this is a solid piece of modern writing and a sign of things that could come next.
This book has so many compelling elements to it. It's a story that builds and builds. It's funny, can bring a lump to your throat on occasion, and particularly toward the finale is desperately exciting. DON'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN.
