Más de medio siglo después de su aparición, en 1963, en revista Pilote, iniciamos una serie de volúmenes integrales que nos devuelven el orden original de la serie, empezando por Fort Navajo, Tormenta en el Oeste y El águila solitaria completados por un interesantísimo material adicional para completar la lectura de esta serie guionizada por Charlier y dibujada por Giraud.

Jean-Michel Charlier was a Belgian script writer best known as a writer of realistic European comics. He was a co-founder of the famed European comics magazine Pilote.

I absolutely loved this version of the Blueberry comics in black and white. I am quite disappointed that they did not release more volumes like this because I really enjoyed the ink work and looking at the color versions, that distracted me from the stories which are fun and compelling.

Me ha costado casi un año poder completar la colección de integrales de Blueberry. Comprar cómics no es cosa de broma por su precio, pero este sabía que me iba a encantar. Como amante del western, Blueberry tiene todos los ingredientes para convertirse en una de mis obras favoritas del género. Este primer integral reúne las tres primeras historias el ciclo de Fort Navajo, que son una auténtica delicia. Pocas cosas he leído con esta fuerza cinematográfica, parecía que estaba viendo una de las película de la caballería de John Ford. Me temo que me va a llevar menos tiempo leer esta colección del que me costó adquirirla.

Ik ben zeer aangenaam verrast dat die verhalen nog zo fris aanvoelen, blij dat dit gat in mijn strip-cultuur op deze wijze door Dargaud dicht wordt geplamuurd.

Spijtig dat het krioelt van de taalfouten, alsof het nooit is nagelezen om correcties te maken.

This book collects the first three BlueBerry stories that were originally published in the 60s. This is the start of a collection aiming at collecting every BlueBerry story in nice hardcover with an illustration spread over the back of every book.
This is considered canonic french bandes dessinees and it deserves the name. The art hasn't aged much ( which when you compare how bad comics drawn 25 years ago are tells you something about how good french-belgium comics were and especially the artist Giraud was.)
This is a western story about a brash young lieutenant that has troubles with obeying orders. The presentation is top notch with some extra 24 pages about the authors and how this all got started ( over 30 BlueBerry stories will eventually get published over the next 40 years) all in all this is highly recommended to any bandes dessinees fan.
This omnibus ( this is what the french word integrale means) is however only available in french, some of Blueberry titles have however been translated into english).

I've read a few Blueberry stories before and was quite impressed already, but starting at the beginning of the saga with this new edition, the first of 9 volumes, makes my mouth water for more.

The book starts with a 22 page introduction that gives us insight in how Blueberry came to be and more details about the French and Franco-Belgian comic strip world back in the early sixties.

And then the Blueberry stories... wow... these are some of the best I've ever read in comics. Charlier is a true story telling master. The story is well thought out, with enough plot twists, but always stays believable. Jean Giraud aka Moebius works on his first comic project and does it more then well. The first pages in this book are created back in the early sixties, but they truly stand the test of time.

This is wonderful comics and I can't wait to read how the story continues in the second volume.

No puedo creer todos los años que perdí sin leer esta maravilla. Aprovechando los integrales de Norma me leí el primer tomo. Me encontré con una historia dinámica, divertida, ingeniosa y que por momentos te deja con lo huevos en la garganta. Parece escrita ayer. Ya quiero leer el segundo tomo.

Mooie, ontspannende én leerzame bundeling van de originele eerste drie Blueberry-verhalen. De documentatiepagina's bij deze integrale zijn heel interessant. Men dient bewonderend terug te kijken naar het ontstaan van de Franstalig-Belgische strip.
De tekeningen zijn van de hand van Giraud - ook gekend van zijn werk in hele andere stijlen onder het pseudoniem Moebius- het talent spat van de platen, al is er soms wel een heel groot verschil tussen de realistische tekeningen en de bijwijlen karikaturale gezichtsuitdrukkingen.
Opvallend is dat er een grote verhaallijn loopt over meerdere verhalen/albums, we spreken hier over de jaren zestig! De benadering van blanken en indianen doorstaat tamelijk goed de tand des tijds. Blueberry is een beetje een klassieke alleskunnende, oersterke held, maar ook weer niet, hij heeft duidelijk een moreel kompas (al is het af en toe moeilijk te rijmen met het vele geweld dat voorkomt in wat uiteindelijk nog steeds in de eerste plaats actiestrips zijn).
Dom racisme is een thema en in het eerste verhaal wordt zowaar een stevige scene opgevoerd waarbij de Amerikaanse soldaten oorlogsmisdaden begaan. Een enorm verschil met een periode waarin maatschappijkritiek zich in Vlaamse (kranten)strips veeleer op kolderesk-niveau bevond en zich doorgaans beperkte tot het betreuren van de Koude Oorlog en het dienen van de conservatief-katholieke agenda van de broodheren.

Tot slot: de eerste verhalen van 'De Blauwbloezen' moeten toch een respectvol eerbetoon door middel van een ander stripgenre zijn aan Blueberry, dat kan niet anders! :)

U nekim aspektima, strip jeste ostario, ali u drugim je još uvek revolucioniran. Priča o genocidu nad Indijancima do tada nije ispričana u strip formatu, niti smo imali prilike da vidimo antiheroja kao protagonistu. Crtež još nije na nivou poznog Žiroa/Mebijusa, ali se naglo poboljšava iz albuma u album. Najbolje stvari tek slede.

Damnation! Esta historia me ha encantado, western del clásico que bajo el pincel de Giraud (el cual va mejorando considerablemente su estilo) denota dinamismo en gran parte de los tres álbumes que integran el integral.
Estoy necesitando fuertemente el segundo.

Currently available on the Internet Archive, this is the first omnibus of the Blueberry series, one of the foundational Franco-Belgian bande dessinées. This was the first series to break out of the stand alone adventure format and create a multi volume saga. The introduction to the volume gives an interesting summary of the authors’ careers and their central place in the history of the art.

The first three volumes of Blueberry’s adventures are collected here: Fort Navajo (serialised in 1963, published as an album in 1965), Tonnerre à l’Ouest (1964 and 1966), and L’Aigle Solitaire (1964 and 1967). These are all part of the first cycle of adventures which continues in the next omnibus.

Overall, these are entertaining Yankee soldiers and Indians stories with cracking action in the traditional Western format. Charlier’s storytelling is wordy but cleverly imaginative and Giraud’s art grows in confidence with every episode. I’m glad to have read these early stories, but I don’t think I’ll revisit them often. Hence, three stars.

I bought the first book of the collector's edition recently, and I have been reading slowly. It was quite expensive and I wanted to enjoy it as much as possible. The story sets the tone for the whole series, where Blueberry has no problem about questioning authority when needed, or to defend the indians at times, which will create problems for him in the future; while at the same time he starts to make a few good friends that will last for long.

The volume is quite large which allows to look at the details in the drawings. Giraud was not at the top of his trade yet but already each page is a little work of art. The comic has not aged at all, the storyline is very dynamic and engaging, it feels like watching a movie.

I am looking forward very much to reading the later books in the future!

Je ne suis pas un amateur de western et j’avoue que je n’aurais jamais lu cet ouvrage s’il n’avait pas été dessiné par Giraud. Et pourtant j’ai trouvé le récit tout à fait captivant. Blueberry n’est pas une série légendaire sans raison. L’excellent scénario de Charlier y est pour beaucoup. Toutefois le style graphique est encore maladroit et l’on voit bien que Giraud a encore de la difficulté avec les couleurs (particulièrement dans la première histoire). Il n’y a rien dans ce style qui évoque ce que Gir ou Moebius sera plusieurs années plus tard et c’est justement ce que j’ai trouvé intéressant avec cette lecture. Le dossier en préface est très utile pour nous aider à remettre ce travail dans le context de l’oeuvre de Giraud et à comprendre son cheminement.

J’ai donc trouvé cette bande dessinée surprenamment bonne et je n’exclus pas la possibilité de continuer à lire les aventures de Blueberry — que j’aurais dû lire jadis dans Pilote et regrette de ne pas l’avoir fait… Si vous ne connaissez pas Blueberry, même si le genre western vous laisse indifférent, je vous en conjure d’en lire au moins quelques albums…

Enthält die erste 3 Alben der Blueberry-Reihe, spannender Auftakt in die Western-Welt von Charlier und Giraud. Interessanter Auftakt mit einem gebrochenem Helden, der dann jedoch trotzdem sehr schnell strahlend wird. Interessante Darstellung von Weißen und amerikanischen Ureinwohnern mit Graustufen. Der Zyklus um einen ausbrechenden Krieg zwischen Siedlern und Apachen wird in Band 2 weitergeführt und macht Lust auf mehr. Grafisch ist der Comic wirklich schön, aber noch nicht sehr aufregend, von einer früheren Lektüre habe ich in Erinnerung, dass das in späteren Bänden anders wird. – 3,5/5, aufgerundet 4/5

Ensimmäinen Blueberry-kokoelma on vielä monella tapaa rosoinen kokonaisuus, josta puuttuu myöhempien albumien hienostunut kynänjälki ja monipolvinen tarinankuljetus. Vaikka ensimmäinen kokoelma on vielä välillä liian mustavalkoinen ja moraalisesti arvelluttava, on kokonaisuudesta on jo havaittavissa juuri ne asiat, jotka tekevät Blueberrystä erinomaisen, eli moniulotteinen ja moraalisesti harmaan sävyjä kunnioittava tarinankerronta ja upea taide.

En este integral se muestran los inicios de la saga y no hay mucho por destacar, los trazos Giraud son bastante convencionales, la historia es simple y sin sorpresas.

Blueberry var en sådan där "vuxen" serie som delade tidning med fantomen under min uppväxt. När jag var yngre hoppade jag bara över den eftersom de svartvita, detaljerade rutorna, med de realistiska figurerna och berättelserna inte tilltalade mig. Men efterhand som man blev äldre så kom också de där westernserierna Blueberry och Rick O’Shay att bli mer och mer intressanta.

Frågan är bara om man har hunnit bli gammal nog att uppskatta serierna nu, eller om man kanske till och med har råkat växa ifrån dem...

Nej. Nog var det en bra serie. Härliga solbrända och vindpiskade miljöer med djupa kanjoner, strida floder och klippiga berg. Karaktärerna är även de fint utmejslade. En del lite väl klichéaktiga, men på det hela taget bra. Både text och bild samarbetar för att ge en riktigt spännande äventyrsberättelse. Ibland reagerar jag lite på hur författaren målar in sig i ett hörn och måste komma på nödlösningar: Garnisonsledaren är rättvis och välvillig. Klart han vill reda upp ett stort missförstånd med indianerna och ordna med ett möte. Allt är på väg att bli bra och berättelsen kan få sitt slut inte ens en fjärdedel igenom boken. Givetvis tar tar han en promenad i högt gräs, blir varnad för ormar, fnyser åt tanken och blir prompt ormbiten. Sådär, nu kan vi fortsätta komplicera situationen när han inte kan föra befäl längre och den hetlevrade rasistiske ledaren kan ta vid igen. eller när en vagnkonvoj fullastad med krut blir instängd i en arrangerad gräsbrand. Då exploderar en vagn och chockvågorna får åskmolnen att börja regna så elden släcks. För att se till att regnet blir kraftigt nog så börjar alla skjuta med sina vapen mot molnen... vilket fungerar? Någon meteorolog eller fysiker som vill kontrollera det här?

Men i övrigt är det en vältecknad och berättad klassisk western.
Jag vill också passa på att lyfta förordet där man får en fin inblick i den belgiska seriehistorien. Mycket intressant!
