Merry enjoys her life, living by the beach, hanging with her friends, and hoping to get a singing scholarship. She's very content with where her life is heading. Until foul weather while diving causes her to black out, and wake in a land she couldn't imagine.

This is a lovely little story, and a spin on the mermaid folklore (I wanted to say "tale/tail", but I've hit my pun quota this month).
Merry and her best friend Leander, find themselves on a mysterious beach, and in an effort to get home, they bump into some locals camping in the nearby forest.
I thought the similarities in Persephone story, and the fact that she is their goddess was an interesting choice. I did wonder if it would play a bigger part than it did. But, it provides the perfect ruse to keep Merry on the island a little longer, and to cause her some embarrassment (note to self: do not make eye contact with anyone whilst eating pomegranates!).

I liked where the story went, introducing this small group of people, and then building on the world and the conflict around them.
The whole air of the book was very gentle and old-fashioned - it felt like it had come straight from a fable or mythology.

There are some good twists along the way, and you do spend your time guessing which side is really the good guys.

I did feel that Merry and Co. were a little bit too complacent in places, and Merry just accepted everything around her, although she did her detective work when they all went swimming.

So all in all, a fun adventure, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Merry loves singing so it is a great relief when she wins a scholarship to University for music. The only downside is she has the rest of the summer to get through before she starts. That is harder than it sounds since she lives on her own after her parents died. Her friend Leander suggests diving a local wreck with a colourful history. Merry finds a locket while she is diving and becomes absorbed in trying to find the owner of the locket.

The locket is much more than it seems and it takes Merry and Leander to a different sea where she meets some people on the coast. Merry likes this fun loving group, but Leander gets progressively grumpier. He tries to explain that she can’t trust them, especially not the handsome Dylan, but she thinks that he’s just being jealous. Still, she can’t discount Leander’s advice, he’s her oldest friend. If he just wasn’t acting so strange!

I very much enjoyed Wave Singers. It is a very good YA book, but it brings a little different angle to the usual young adult fiction. The character of Merry is exquisitely drawn and her friend Leader is given equally careful treatment. The other people in the book are made to be real people and we get to see the reasons for their actions. Even the villain of the book is multidimensional. The book is the first book in a series. My only complaint is the Epilogue is more a teaser for the next book than a true epilogue, but that is a minor point against the solid quality of the writing in this book.

I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys good fantasy and especially YA books.

I enjoyed this story. It used It's fantasy elements well and Glossary was helpful if I needed to review some of the terms used to create it. I also enjoyed the way that some mythology was used. The story was a little slow getting into, but as the end neared I became more invested with the story.

When Merry finds the locket with her friend Lender she gets swept into a new world she had never known about. The world of the Mer, or mermaids that help her better understand herself. As Merry starts to learn about all the new things the reader is brought along with her on this journey.

I really enjoyed the details that were put into the mermaid’s transformations as well as the descriptions of their appearances as mermaids though at times it was difficult to understand which form the characters were in. The settings varied and were done wonderfully. Some of my favorite part took place within the small village where the journeyed to. It was the perfect place to get more characterization and I was able to understand the characters and their relationships the best here. Some events and actions begin there that start the movement of the plot.

This was my first time reading anything by Echo Fox but it won't be the last - this author has the gift of drawing you into a fun, magical world and holding you there, picturing every scene as though it were a movie. I loved the chemistry between Merry and Leander right from the start as you wonder where her gift of singing is going to really come into play. Their relationship is just one of the things about this story that keeps the pages turning...and then you discover Leander's secret. Merry is a great, strong character you can't help rooting for the whole way through, especially when she meets Dylan and the real truth comes out. I'm very much looking forward to more in this series!

Wave Singers is the first of the Equilibria series and it is a mesmerising and thoroughly entertaining fantasy.

Everything hinges on a music scholarship for 18-year-old Merry to attend university, as she is alone in the world since her father left and her mother died. In the lazy summer between finishing school and starting university, she and her friends go diving to explore a shipwreck. Merry and her close friend, Leander discover an object before being transported through a portal to the realm of mermaids or Wave Singers - which will forever alter both their destinies. In this new land, Merry meets and is drawn to Dylan but becomes confused when new feelings emerge for her old friend Leander.

The mermaid world is beautifully imagined and described by Echo Fox. Her creative description of how land dwellers transform into mermaids using mental imagery and song is particularly well done. The dialogue is natural and her characters are likeable. She skilfully shifts the point of view between characters so you understand and feel for each of them, except of course, the dastardly Merrick.

Wave Singers provides a fascinating blend of adventure, mystery and romance that will keep you turning the pages and wanting to read book two.

Wave Singers starts out leisurely as we are introduced to Merry and her pals as they prepare to head off to college. The teens forget their woes by telling mermaid legends around a campfire. It's all good. There's nothing Merry can't handle until --BAM!-- she's dragged into a foaming maelstrom and her world is upended, legends become heritage, and the destiny of a nation hinges on her decisions--many which involve her love life. Suddenly, the freshman 15 doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Wave Singers is a fun spin on mermaid lore. The descriptions of underwater civilizations and of how those with the ability to transform change from legs to fins had my imagination firing on all cylinders. The drama in the story is offset well by humor, and the story is well paced.

I did question some of the characters' actions (in particular those of a certain guy who would have benefited from a "Courtship for Dummies" book while pursuing his goal) but, overall, Wave Singers was a very enjoyable read.

I loved Wave Singers, there are some great characters who you love, hate, distrust and laugh with. Each character is readable, human and true to life whilst there are many sensible routes each character could take you understand why their own rage or love has pushed them past sense.

The world is presented beautifully and even simple actions are described perfectly. Swimming through the sea, fights and the senses the character is experiencing are fantastic (I've never felt so close to diving through a shipwreck!).

I'm excited about the series as this book does a great job of keeping you wanting to know more about the world, the politics and factions involved. Wave Singers forms the beginning of something much bigger.

I started reading this book and I just couldn't put it down! The character development is fantastic and very easy to relate to, the world is detailed and gives you tantalising glimpses of more to come, and I think the way that magic has been approached in these books is very unique and makes for a highly enjoyable read!
