I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Kit Lucky Parrish, a former and still-loved hometown hero returns home after being honorably discharged with a career-ending injury from the Army. He wants to make things right with his mama and give her the love and attention he didn't give when he was younger. Kit's mom is battling MS but she doesn't want or need his help and prefers her independence over his interference in her life.

During his first week home he's given a job lead and told about a big party at Richmond Manor. There he briefly meets Rebecca Beck Dobson, a fellow classmate he didn't know in high school. Beck knows of Kit and his well-earned past reputation as a football hero and womanizer. Kit no longer wants to be that guy -- he wants to be different -- a better version of his former self.

Days later he encounters Beck again and races to her rescue when he thinks she's a damsel in distress. She makes it clear -- she isn't! From that moment on they slowly (this is a slow burn romance) get to know one another. Kit is content to court her by taking things slow and Beck isn't sure she wants to take it anywhere at all. Each of them have their own issues of the past their battling. This couple really, really makes every effort to get to know one another. Not, their high school selves, but the adults they've had to become due to unforeseen circumstances in their lives. The kind of things that happen, that builds character.

It was very refreshing to read a grown folks romance. Kudos to the authors.

I pre-ordered this book before the release date but I was so excited to read it that I signed up for the ARC! Now I get to savor this romance all over again.

This was a fantastic love story! I could really feel the connection between Kit and Rebecca. The version I have has a few errors, but not enough to distract me from the excellent storytelling, or take away any stars. G.L. Tomas is a fantastic writing duo and I can't wait for their next release. 5 stars!

What do you think of the standard high school super star quarterback, turned war hero? The man, right?

That's what everyone in his home town assumed about Kit, aka, Lucky, all except one person. It was true, before serving his country Kit was the oversexed popular athlete womanizer who ruled the small town of Wheelwright, Kentucky. Once he had a chance to leave town and mature, he found he wanted more out of life. The only problem with returning home was that everyone expected him to be the same as he was in school.

Kit's entire life had changed. His mother's health had declined due to MS and being her only child, he was compelled to care for her. What few people knew was that he needed care too. Physically he was a fine specimen, standing over 6 feet tall with red hair and mesmerizing green eyes and a firm athletic body. Below the surface, he was riddled with guilt and horrible memories of war. His goals when he returned home:

"To be a better son
To be worthy enough to have someone love me"

Enter Beck! She was a sweet girl dealing with the loss of her mother and past demons that reared their ugly heads from time to time. She went to high school with Kit, but was the smart type so he did not remember her, but she definitely remembered him. They meet at a BBQ his first week home and became inseparable! Both are hot for each other, but Beck wants to remain just friends for now. She's afraid of his past reputation of love 'em and leave 'em.

Left up to Kit, he would have taken her to bed the first night, but he welcomed the challenge and to his credit had the patience of a saint. He hounded her for months just to get a real date. They spent every free second they had with each other, but he wanted a date so he could slide out of the friend zone and in between her legs.

He finally got his chance after winning a bet with Beck, only to have things fall apart just as he was about to be satisfied. Close, but no cigar. They eventually get it together and sparks fly all over that bedroom. I still don't know what she was waiting for. Yes, she had something traumatic happen to her during college that forced her to drop out, but she had had sex since. It was insinuated that she was sexually assaulted, but we never really find out for sure.

This was a really good story and I loved the characters in this book. It would have garnered a 4 or 4.5 star rating, but I had a tough time overlooking the many editorial issues throughout the entire book. It made for an irritating read and I had to take off points. It got better toward the end, but they were still there. If the author had invested in a proofreader this book would be a favorite.

Special place iny heart

According to Beck, you should give the bad news first.

The cons were that there were several grammatical errors but context clues helped the reader understand what was written. The second con is that the romance was a slow burn. For some that's a good thing, but what can I say? I'm a hornball and was dying for them to get to the goody-goody already. Hah.

The positives? I love that they became close friends. I loved the way they handled Kit being a disabled veteran. This is near and dear to my heart as I am the spouse of a disabled veteran. I love how realistic the love scenes were. I love how Kit didn't give up on Beck no matter how many times she tried to push him away.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone. Can't wait to read the next book by the twinjas!

Do people really change? That's what Rebecca "Beck" Dobson wondered when she saw Kit "Lucky " Parrish after seeing him for the first time since high school. He seems different but only time will tell.
Kit doesn't remember Beck. But after a chance encounter with her, he can't imagine he would have forgotten her if he had met her before, and now that he's met her he can't imagine life without her.
Kit and Beck are both fighting their own demons while trying to figure out what's going on between them. This was a sweet love story with a couple of steamy love scenes. You can definitely feel the connection between these two. The story was a little slow in the beginning and had it's share of grammatical errors, but I enjoyed their journey in spite of those issues. I wish there was a little more background about what Beck went through and how she got through it. There was way more about Kit than Beck which was a bit disappointing. Overall it's a good read and I give it 4 stars.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
OMG! I really enjoyed this story! It's no secret that I love reading a Jaw Dropping Story that has moments of love, friendship and drama! What a well written well pace with great characters that's well developed. This BWWM romance that will grab your attention from the beginning and hold your interest until the end. You will enjoy the way in which the characters interact with intrigue that's through out the story. Reading a new author for me is like
finding gold and G.L. Tomas is a new author for me to read and I really loved
reading this story while it's my first book I have read of G.L. Tomas but it won't be my last. The characters are awesome the chemistry between them is blazing hot and beautiful. Starting a relationships as friends allows the couple feelings to grow at just the right pace. This story features Rebecca Dobson her friends call her “Beck” and Kit Parrish aka “Lucky”. Rebecca is a petite caramel color beautiful woman that now lives in Wheelwright, Kentucky she left town to go to college but a year before her mother died something happen while she was at college, she came home and she was happy she did because her mother was sick but she hadn't want her daughter to abandon her education but she came home anyway. Kit is over 6" well muscle very fair skinned with red hair and green eyes he is panty melting gorgeous. He played Football in High school and earned the nickname Lucky.
But that was over nine years ago since then he had join the Army Rangers and then he been recruited by the Special Forces but he was given a Honorable discharge since he had got shot and now he is back home in Wheelwright, Kentucky. This story is unique and a Amazing to read. I absolutely enjoyed these characters I really like how their relationship develops into something that's so entirely theirs. They are both suffering with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder each has their own experiences. So Beck ask Kit to see a therapist to help him with his episodes and she does the one thing she never thought she could do. But their feelings for each other gives them no other choice. It's the only way they can see their feeling developing into more. Oh my! I enjoyed the laughter and passion. This story is sweet, charming and heartwarming, If you are in search of a Fascinating BWWM novel, then look no further than "Lesson That Taught Love by G.L.Tomas. You may want to add G.L.Tomas to your TBR list, I know I intend to because I'm hooked on G.L.Tomas. She has a gift for creating such believable, charming characters that will make you laugh and cry. The eloquence that G. L.Tomas brings to the pages of this story allows all the elements to come together into a seamless book. I expected a cute romance and what I got was something that captivated me from the beginning to the end. I also wanted you to know is that I will definitely add G.L.Tomas to my author to read list and I hope you will too. I certainly recommend this book to all readers.

Thrilling

I've had this book in my library for quite some time and just got around to reading it. I always enjoy stories in which two broken individuals come together, fight their demons and come out on top. Throw in real life, relatable problems and you have an interesting story.

Kit returned from war suffering from PTSD and some injury. Prior to joining the army he was known as a great football player and a ladies man. Rebecca aka Beck had returned home from college after her mom died and never returned. Even though she was reluctant to share her reasons, I figured it was sexual.

They were drawn to each other and found a way to help each other. I love the writing style and will definitely read more of her work.

Awkward title but a good slow burn!

Slight copy edits aside, I really enjoyed this slow burn romance. I liked seeing the relationship build, the personalities had snap, and I liked their challenges (and that we didn't have to witness her trauma, just the effects of it.)

Sweet and tart.

The story begins as Kit–a former womanizer turned war hero– returns to town. Though his days of chasing women are long gone, he has a new form of “trouble” in his life. Due to an accident during his tour of duty, he now suffers from PTSD and has lost most of the hearing in his left ear.

Rebecca is the smart girl he ignored in high school. After an incident made her leave college (this is my assumption, it was never made clear in the book) she returns to their small town and takes up work at the local diner.

The two meet at a BBQ– my favorite scene in the novel. I loved that Rebecca carried books in her bag to read when she got bored. It was while reading that Kit happens upon her. What follows is a nice, chemistry laden meeting in which they discuss why their paths never crossed before. I was excited to continue the read and find out how these two emotionally damaged individuals would let down their guards and come together. I zipped through the pages, reading everyday until suddenly I’d skip a day, then two, then five because I realized nothing was happening. Nothing.

It was literally chapter after chapter of no tension, no action, but most importantly no chemistry. Each time Kit and Rebecca met, it was like old friends meeting and shooting the breeze. There was hardly any mention of how they made each other feel, be it verbally stated or shown through their actions.

From the synopsis, we know that the female character has suffered some form of abuse. I expected to find out what happened to her, but though she mentions it vaguely, though it stymies her first sexual encounter with the hero, she never says what actually happened.

The abuse–as well as Kit’s reputation as a ladies man– is used as the reason Rebecca decides to take things slow. This is fine except when she said slow, I didn’t think it meant as slow as {insert every euphemism, idiom, cliché for “slow”}. Chapter 10 arrives and they still haven’t gone on a date, nor do they know that much about each other. When said date finally happens, Rebecca thinks more about what she’s going to wear than of how going out with him makes her feel.

There is one major event that could have really turned everything around, but it’s handled rather quickly and blandly.

This book also suffered from the “Magic Penis Syndrome” aka sex that’s so good it turns the previously skiddish/abused person into a sex maniac. Rebecca reasons that the abuse she suffered is why she makes Kit wait for sex. It’s even the thing that thwarts their first sexual encounter. This does not hold though, because the next time they have sex—without really discussing her issues—she’s all in and over the top; zero apprehension, zero thoughts of the abuse and borderline porn star. Again, this is all fine and good—except it wasn’t believable in this situation.

“Lesson that Taught Love” wasn’t terrible. It read as a descent first draft in need of major editing. The characters had potential, but the slow pace, and lack of emotions kind of zapped all the energy from the book. It is for these reasons that I cannot recommend a read.

Love Lessons

This is an atypical interracial romance. It was set in a small town in Kentucky, apparently where everyone knew each other and loved each other. No whiff of racism existed which made the book unbelievable.

Kit Parrish, the white hero, had just got back into town after serving several tours in the Iraqi and Afghan wars. He was the handsome ex-quarterback who was still worshipped by men and women. However, he had changed, no longer the womanizer taking advantage of his fame. He also suffered from PTSD and became a loner. He meets Rebecca, Beck, Dobson, the African American heroine. He doesn't know her even though they graduated high school together. She also suffers from PTSD because of a sexual assault. We know what caused his PTSD but we are left to assume that she's a victim of sexual in her third year of college. We're never given details even though she tells Kit.

Their relationship develops without sex entering until 75% of the book is done. There were sexual overtones but nothing overt. The book deals with them coming to terms with the problems that plagued them and helping each other deal with them. This was a slow and at times boring read with the need for an editor obvious - missing or extra words and other errors.

The main characters were pretty developed with good backstory for each. Still, there seemed to be something missing. This was not a short novella so the plot could have been more interesting. There were events that were just thrown in with no follow-up. The ending could have been more fully developed. Of course, there's a HEA.

I loved this story from cover to cover! It's not often you get a story where the author takes the time to not only build on the plot but to build on the multidimensional characters that make you fall in love with them. Kit "Lucky" and Rebecca's "Beck" love story is just about as sweet as it gets. A hometown hero returned from his military tour of duty, comes back not so whole, and not the same man he used to be. And Beck, a woman who settled in life due to a traumatizing past and thinking she just couldn't cut it out there in the wider world. These two meet and start out in a satisfying platonic relationship, that blossomed into an all encompassing love. Which I love because platonic relationships are always underestimated in value. But these two learned to trust and rely on each other, making for a strong foundation even for their romantic relationship. They weathered a few storms together, through Kit's PTSD and Beck's trauma. But it was hard not to gush at how cute these two were with each other, always uplifting one another. It's not your run of the mill lighthearted tale of love, but about the deep intricacies of loving another person.

Kit and Becca are the two least likely people to meet and come together, and yet they make sense and need each other in a way that no other person would do. Kit's a wounded veteran and Becca is a hurting girl, both of them with their issues and demons to deal with. They recognise each other's woundedness and tread gently around each other, initially developing a lighthearted and slightly irreverent friendship. When Kit has a crisis of epic proportions, Becca is there for him and sees him through. This is the start of healing for both of them. I loved the characters in this book, the depth of their friendship and ultimately their love story. I also enjoyed the witty dialogue and humourous situations, including those that were canine induced. However, this book needs some serious reediting to take it from a reasonable story to really good. The fact that there were so many errors was disturbing and I felt embarrassed for the author. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

I normally do not give bad reviews. I'd rather not give a review than give a bad a review. That being said, I couldn't not review this book. I always try to find something good in the story but I just couldn't with this book. If you can get past the poor editing, you still don't have a great story. I really don't like being mean so all I'm going to say is it's a good thing this book was Kindle Unlimited because I wouldn't ever want to spend my money on a book like this because like bad reviews, I also don't return books unless it's KU and I need the space for more books. I will say the author might have some potential if she/he is willing to invest in an editor. I also feel terrible for giving two stars...so I'm willing to read another book from this author to see if maybe it was just this story, but normally I enjoy subjects like this book.

First Time reader 3.75 stars!!!!

This was a decent read. I loved the realistic issues brought up about military men and issues that occur in real life when they come home...from relational issues, mental health and other thing😉. I was however confused about Becks' issues not being really clearly stated, there was some things implied but not clearly stated. Luckys' story made more sense but still left me confused trying to figure out what was going on. Was confused several times not understanding what was happening in the read. Their past issues were especially confusing because they wou!d often start but not be finished as a complete thought. Loved their slow building love story, but at times I got bored and felt the story was dragging.

This was quite a slow burn read for me. Both main characters has just burdens from their previous lives that everything was a struggle and for that making progress with each other was very slow. There were times yes that i found Rebecca a bit hard headed, but i guess with her history slow was good. I appreciated how the author wrote Kit, yes he hurt and his trauma was bad but it was handled in a real way. This was never going to be a hard and fast burn book, but a cool and slow ride which i appreciated.

Wonderful story

I liked how Kit and Beck where classmates in high school but didn't actually know each other and years later they meet at a party in their hometown. Kit had a reputation of being a player and Beck was known by her friends a as bookworm. They both had trauma in their lives, Kit from getting severely injured in the service and Beck from being assaulted while away in college. They eventually came to together tonhlp each other out with dealing with their demons of the past and fell in love as time went on and dealing with everything.

Easy read, well throughout premise

This was a really good presentation of the benefits of professional help and mental health. The way it was woven into the story was very well done, wish there were even a few more instances to demonstrate how it impacts the person with PTSD in little ways as well as the huge way with re-experiencing the trauma. I wished you had delved more into Beck's trauma just for the experience. No, criticism at all minor typos really minor. Good read recommending it to all. I also enjoyed the touches related to their racial makeup.

I liked the way to the main characters helped each other in this book. They had their moments, like everyone does, but they managed to work through these instead of having a massive fight. At times the story felt a little bit rushed, like it jumped forward without explaining something. Strong characters, and a HEA - happy with that.

Just ok

This book was just ok. There were moments when the book was boring. Kit and Beck were a ok couple. There were time I had to push through. I kept waiting for something good to really happen. There was the moment with kit but that was it.The beginning of the book gave a trigger warning about sexual assault. I thought Beck was going to share her story about that. She never did so I was confused about the warning. Just ok but others my like it.

In this book we see how PESD really affects a person; it’s a story full of pain and love. We take a look at two broken people meet and build a steady loving relationship while helping to heal each other’s past. This read is a positive and strong way of how people overcome trauma. Not what I expected

I thought this was going to be the typical cowboy romance but it was more than that! Kit and Beck, attended the same high school. Beck knew of Kit and his exploits but Kit didn't know about Beck. Kit has recently returned to their small town, a wounded veteran and meets Beck at a party. This is the start of their journey to each other.

I liked the slow arc of the physical side of this relationship. I liked that Beck made him wait for it and that in the wait they became friends. I like that his being a disabled vet did not become an issue. I like that since they were friends they were not just into one another but there for one another.

Loved

Wonderfully written and it made me smile to read an interracial love story that didn't focus so heavily on that fact. Kit made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world and Beck made him feel the same and it radiated in every word of their love story! Thank you for this offering.

Apart from being quite boring, there were times I wasn't sure who was speaking Kit or Beck, because of lack of editing or formatting? I'm not sure.

There was enough of this story to give it potential, but like another reviewer said, it read like a first draft that needed an awful lot of work to make it a fully fleshed out book.

Too Long

It gets there stars because it was a good story but dragged on and the grammar issues didn't help. The twin sisters were annoying and at times Beck was obnoxious. Don't know if I'll read another book by this author.
