Ibrahim Pasha: Grand Vizir of Suleiman the Magnificent

Ibrahim was a Christian of base extraction, the son of a Greek sailor of Parga. He was born in 1494. In his childhood he was captured by Turkish corsairs. It would seem that he was first sold to a widow of Magnesia, who clothed him well and had him well educated, and especially trained to perform upon a musical instrument resembling the violin, which he learned to play beautifully.
Whether it was on one of his expeditions to Asia Minor that Suleiman, son of the reigning monarch Selim I, met Ibrahim and was won by his charm and his musical ability, or whether Ibrahim was taken to Constantinople and there sold to the prince, cannot be determined from conflicting reports, but the fact that Ibrahim became Suleiman’s property is incontestable.
Ibrahim never forgot his origin or his family. In 1527 his father came to Constantinople to visit him, and later he had his mother and his two brothers at the Palace. He was able to help his father substantially, giving him a sandjak or governorship. Of course Ibrahim adopted Islam, else there were no story to tell, for a Christian could have had no career in Turkey in that day.
Baudier says that the boy Ibrahim was carried to Constantinople by “them which exact the tribute of Christian Children.” This tribute of Christian children had been levied since the reign of Orkhan (1326–1361) and was the material of which the redoubtable army of janissaries was formed. These children, separated from their own countries and their families, and practically always converted to Islam, were for the most part trained in military camps and forbidden to marry. Therefore they had no interest except in war, and no loyalty except to the sultan. Thus they developed into the finest military machine the world had known, the most perfect instrument for a conqueror’s use, but a dangerous force in time of peace...

Πολύ απλό για τη λαχτάρα μου να διαβάσω για πρόσωπα και πράγματα της εποχής και της Ιστορίας της περιόδου αλλά ας μην ξεχνάμε ότι είναι διατριβή που γράφτηκε το 1911, οπότε από τότε έχουν αλλάξει πολλά και ως προς τη μεθοδολογία και την έρευνα και ως προς τον πλούτο των πηγών για την οθωμανική Ιστορία. Σε γενικές γραμμές το βιβλίο περιγράφει πολύ κατατοπιστικά και αρκετά απλά, οπότε άνετα μπορεί να το διαβάσει ο καθένας, τη ζωή του Ιμπραήμ, την οθωμανική Ιστορία από το 1522 μέχρι το 1536 και τη νοοτροπία των Τούρκων. Υπάρχουν υποσημειώσεις, υπάρχει βιβλιογραφία, όμως δεν υπάρχει πουθενά ενδελεχής μελέτη, αναλυτική επεξεργασία αιτίων και αιτιατών. Να φανταστείτε ότι η ζωή του Ιμπραήμ ξεκινάει με μια απλή αναφορά στην Πάργα και την ταπεινή ζωή του ψαρά πατέρα του και μετά τον πήρε το παιδομάζωμα και σπούδασε οπότε πήρε μεγάλη μόρφωση και ήταν και στενός φίλςο του Σουλεϊμάν, οπότε από κει και πέρα αρχίζει η ανάλυση του βιβλίου. Επίσης παρατίθενται αναλυτικά αποσπάσματα από πηγές που για μένα δεν ταιριάζουν με τη συνολική εικόνα που θέλει να δώσει η συγγραφέας. Τέλος πάντων, το βιβλιο για την εποχή του είναι αρκετά μελετημένο, ακολουθεί τους βασικούς κανόνες μιας διατριβής αλλά πιο πολύ ασχολείται με την οθωμανική Ιστορία με αφορμή τα επιτεύγματα του Ιμπραήμ παρά με τη ζωή του Ιμπραήμ.

Bardzo krótkie, encyklopedyczne ujecie biografii jednego z najbardziej znanych wezyrów imperium osmańskiego. Dla osób, które na ten temat już coś wiedzą publikacja nie będzie niczym nowym ani odkrywczym. We wstępie Autor pisze, że życie Ibrahima Paszy jest jak najbarwniejsza powieść, po czym w książce obcesowo stwierdza np."ten wątek życia nie jest przedmiotem tej książki", albo "nie będziemy się zagłębiać w tę kwestię, bo powstało o niej wiele publikacji".
Do tego długie przypisy po niemiecku, angielsku bądź łacinie, nieprzetłumaczone - niewiele wnoszą, w związku z czym książka też ma niewielką wartość. W moim odczuciu więcej dowiesz się o tej postaci z tureckich filmów dokumentujących ten okres historii imperium niż z tego czegoś, co nawet nie jest pełną biografią. Do tego momentami styl szkolny, przypominający wypracowanie licealisty.

Volví a mi era obsesionada con el sultán... Y mis personajes favs eran ibrahim y hurrem (me encantan los personajes con bmvubras de oportunidad). Pero ibrahim como personaje histórico o ficticio siempre me ha fascinado, sobretodo su relación con suleiman. Así que me puse a leer cosas históricas. No puedo creer que me leí 56 páginas en inglés de una biografía de Ibrahim, si descubro que estaba traducida me mato. Bueno, mi conclusión es que los rumores te pueden matar y que si no te desprendes de tu pasado (religioso) igual te mueres.. Ah también que nunca confíes en el amor que un hombre tenga por ti, igual y te ahorca en la noche en que te invita a una cita.
Se que mi reseña lit haciendo alusión a una serie debe ser una burla pa los otros que reseñen esto siendo historiadores. Pero déjenme en paz, I am just a girl, no me tomen tan enserió.

Being a huge muhteşem yüzyıl fan, I absolutely loved it. The romance of Hatice Sultan and Ibrahim Paşa was kind of put well in this book, though future research has proven that Ibrahim married Muhsine. He was a brave and intelligent man, but was sadly killed by his own friend. Any person who had seen Okan Yalabık portray Ibrahim Paşa will be able to relate better!!

Kisah Ibrahim Pasha, Wazir Agung semasa pemerintahan Sultan Sulaiman, Sultan ke -10 Kerajaan Usmaniah. Berasal dari Parga, Greek. Ditangkap dan dijadikan hamba. Di beri pelajaran dan diajar bermain biola.

Bersahabat dengan Sultan Sultan Sulaiman yang sebaya dengannya. Sultan Sulaiman melantiknya dari satu jawatan ke satu jawatan sehinggalah menjadi Wazir Agung dan Panglima Perang. Ibrahim mengetuai beberapa ekspedisi ketenteraan seperti Pengepungan di Vienna dan juga memerangi puak Syiah atau Kerajaan Sasanid yang cuba menguasai Baghdad.

Ibrahim digambarkan sebagai seorang yang bijak dalam diplomasi, panglima perang yang handal dan juga seorang pemuzik yang hebat. Menjadi Wazir Agung selama 13 tahun, malangnya dibunuh di atas perintah Sultan Sulaiman sendiri.
