He’s her hot one-night stand. She’s his fated mate. And there’s one person determined to keep them apart.
Lira just needs room to breathe. Somewhere away from her small town, their prying eyes, and their intense focus now that her cheating ex… is really her ex. For good. What better place to get away than a dive bar two towns over? And if she happens to meet her next one-night stand in all of his muscular, lickable glory… all the better.
Werebear Jake just wanted a drink. What he got was an armful of luscious mate. For one night. Then life--and his persnickety grandmother--interfere. He has to get his family to Grayslake, Georgia (the werebear town) and then he’ll focus on finding his missing mate. Unless she finds him first.
Jake has Lira, but can he keep her? Lira’s ex refuses to let her go and Jake’s bear… refuses to let him live.

Flora Dare lives in Durham, NC in a cute little pink house, with her husband, Scott and their hellion of a puppy, HaliToeses. She writes love, lust and mayhem in almost every flavor, and like The Pirate Movie, she wants a happy ending, every time!
Trying to get away from her ex, Lira heads off to another town and has a one night stand with Jake, who happens to be a werebear and recognizes that Lira is his mate. Problem is, she has no idea about bear shifters. Lira disappears the next morning and Jake is in a panic about relocating his mate, but other obligations take precedence, since he has to transport his grandmother back to Grayslake. Meanwhile, Lira's foster mother thinks it's time she got in touch with her shifter roots and sends her to Grayslake to get further away from her loco ex. Jake finally finds her here and reveals that they're mates, but Lira isn't sold on this fated destiny stuff. She's reluctant to commit to someone she barely knows, so she makes Jake wait. Until her ex shows up and threatens their happiness...then she begins to realize that she's been wasting time when she could be embracing happiness with Jake.
First off, I respect the fact that an author of PNR finally had a heroine doubting the realities of "fated mates." Instead of just jumping into a committed relationship with someone she doesn't know, even though Jake desperately wants her to, she stands her ground and demands that their be some emotional connection first. I respect the hell out of that because I know that's how I'd be acting. That being said, Lira still managed to annoy the crap out of me in doing so. Maybe it was the fact that instead of seeing if there was a connection she was actively avoiding one. I was bothered by the fact that Jake seemed to feel the "mate" thing and Lira was ambivalent about all of it. After she'd had her one night stand with Jake, she didn't think his name again for another 40% of the book. Meanwhile he can't stop thinking about her. It felt like Jake was invested and Lira couldn't have cared less. And then when she finally gets the space that she wants, she's ready to walk away because she doesn't think Jake wants her anymore. No, crazylady, he's just giving you what you asked for. She over-reacted there instead of just asking him. So, I wasn't a fan of Lira. But I did like that Jake had to work for it. Take it or leave it, at least it was short.

This is a great novella by Flora Dare. This book is part of the Kindle Worlds series. Lira needs room to breathe away from her small town and her cheating ex, so she heads to the dive bar two towns over. What she isn’t expecting is her one night stand to be her fated mate, Jake. If you are looking for a great paranormal romance, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Romance trope: shifter Series: Grayslake: More Than Mated Length: 78 pages
Plot: Lira and Jake meet in a bar one night when he saves her from an ex and they spend a magical night together. But Jake is just passing through and Lira is on her way to meet her family. Lucky for them, they're both headed in the same direction.
Commentary: This could have been a sweet shifter story. But once Jake told Lira they were mates, they both became a little mean - grumpy, grouchy, but also mean. That took away some of the enjoyment for me. I wish we could have seen the mate pull on Lira's side. We know she's a shifter but she didn't seem to feel the same supernatural pull that Jake did. Maybe it was different once the shock of being a shifter wore off.
Lira was in a bar having a drink when she looked up and saw a gorgeous man walk in. They both looked at each other and started walking toward each other when her ex cheating fiance grabbed her by the arm. Jake had Lira in his arms and asked her quietly if she needed help. Lira nodded yes. Then Jake grabbed Lira and kissed her, and looked the ex in the eye. About that time, the bartender grabbed the ex and kicked him out for grabbing Lira. Also, he wanted to avoid a fight in his place. Lira and Jake had a one night stand. Jake realized that Lira was his mate, and when he woke up, she was gone. Jake knew that he had to find Lira and never let her go! Later in the story, the ex won't leave Lira alone and even has a gun with him. You will have to read the book to find out what happens.
I enjoyed this short story. From page one I was hooked. I read this book in one sitting and didn’t put it down once. I really liked Lira and Jake as a couple. I liked the chemistry between the two. The only thing that disappointed me was that Lira seemed to push Jake away at times. I understood Lira’s reasons for wanting to take it slow but I wanted her to have the ‘’he’s my mate’’ realisation, which she didn’t have until the end. I was happy when Lira found her bear. I was happy that she was able to protect herself and her loved ones. I liked Lira’s relationship with Magda. I found it sweet how Magda was a second mother to Lira. The storyline for this book is easy to follow and an enjoyable read.
Lira is trying to get away from her ex Ethan. He is a cheating rat and her best friend was no better. When she decided to relax and have some “me” time, Ethan tried to take it from her. Jake knew the little human was his mate. But surprises are to be had. I have to say that the secret Magda, her adoptive mom, kept was a tough one. And we also find out why and what happened to Lira’s parents. It took a handsome shifter bear to shake everything up. And boy what those two had to go through to finally come together again. Looking forward to reading about Magda.
This is a new to me author that has written a good fitting story in this Kindle World. I have already purchased her other book in this world. I liked the storyline and the characters. It does need a good proofread.
I loved the story line but there were just too many wrongly worded phrases and grammatical errors for me. Took me too long to figure out what some sentences were trying to say. Otherwise I would have given more star rating s
A sweet happily ever after novella in the greylake series. Interfering grandmothers, snarky teens and long lost shifter family keeps this one-night stand from being to predicable.
Jake and Lira get off to a bad start. Kinda. They're both looking for something in the local dive bar; they just never figured it would be an HEA. Great addition to the Grayslake series.
Tongue in cheek dry humoured cockblocking. Delightful elders wobbling about. Just a thoroughly delightful read. Not outstanding but extremely homily and comfortable.
This terrific PNR started out being good and quickly became great. Action, steam and laugh out loud funny with a HEA. I loved it.
Flora Dare is a brand new author to me, and 'Secrets to Bear' is the first book I've read by her, so I had no idea what to expect, and as I started reading and got into the story it seemed to be on a par with a lot of other good, steamy paranormal romances, one of my two favourite genres and I wasn't disappointed. I love a well crafted, hot romance with shifters, but the more I read, the more I came to the conclusion that this was a stand out story and by the end of the second chapter, I'd decided it was more on a par with some of the best out there. Well written in the third person and laugh out loud funny, this terrific stand alone paranormal romance had me in stitches and I laughed 'till I cried. I absolutely loved it. 'Secrets to Bear' is also her first book in Celia Kyle's new 'Grayslake: More Than Mated' series for Kindle Worlds, another one of my favourite authors, and a series I've loved from the very first book and, fortunately for me, I'd already bought the first five of before it became a KW series.
On instructions from Ty Abrams, the clan's Itan (leader), werebear Jake Masters' is relocating three generations of his family to join him in Grayslake. His mother and teenage sister are no problem, they're packed up and ready to roll, the problem and the reason he's having an overnight stop is his irascible grandmother, whose made the move a living hell for them all and demanded he come and get her. It's a two-day drive, so he got himself overnight lodgings, and went over the road to the Salty Shanty for a drink before crashing. But when he walked in the door, the world dropped away as he laid eyes on his fated one, his true mate, for the first time and she seemed to be having a problem. That guy really shouldn't have his hands on Jake's mate so he moved in to rescue her and take her away with him..... but the next morning.....
Having caught her now ex-fiance Ethan buried in her room-mate, the so-called and also now ex-best friend Angela a month ago, Lira naturally broke off the engagement. Fortunately it was far enough away from the wedding to get all her deposits back and she went home to her 'foster' mother Magda. Sick of the way everyone looks at her these days, she goes two towns over to the Salty Shanty for a quiet drink before food and home but two things happen that change her plans. First, as she's about to leave she finds that the more and more nasty ex followed her, and second, the guy who just walked in the door makes her forget everything else and a one-night stand could be just what she needs.... but the next morning.......
The next morning is where the story really starts to get into it's swing and all the fun really begins but I'm not going to give spoilers, you'll just have to read it for yourself. This book is filled with wonderful and quirky characters and the love they all share shines out of every page as secrets are brought out into the open, and my emotions ran the gamut as I read of long ago tragedy, blame, anger, guilt, sorrow, a family finally reunited, and it's not Jake's, as well as love, joy, and laughter. This terrific story features a deranged and delusional ex, a few wolf shifters, at least one big stupid bear, one confused and wary woman discovering things about herself she never knew, a couple of typical teenage girls, the granny from hell, but her heart's in the right place and believe me when I say I'll never be able to look a can on lemon Pledge in face again without bursting out laughing at the vision of an irascible old woman sitting in a chair with a duster, polishing her.....no, not telling, but a treat in store.
With action, steam, humour and a happily ever after for Jake and Lira, it's definitely a 5 star read. I was lucky enough to be given a copy in exchange for an honest review and I absolutely loved it. With just this one wonderful book, Flora Dare has made a place for herself on my must read author list and I can't wait to read more of her stories. I'm also a big fan of the Grayslake series, but sadly Kindle Worlds books are only available from Amazon US and only to US residents, which I'm not and like all international readers, I would never have been able to read this absolutely fantastic story otherwise.
The downside of small towns? Everybody knows everyone's business. When that means the people you see every day know that you found your fiancé and best friend together, that is not a good thing at all. The looks, whether ones of sympathy or smug satisfaction, leave Lira ready to go crazy. Since that could end with her in jail ;-), she decides to visit a nearby town and wallow in some alcohol. Unfortunately she also runs into Ethan, who it seems isn't ready to let her go, though the evidence says otherwise.
Thankfully, a man with whom she was instantly aware of, and vice versa, steps in when she needs help to get rid of Ethan. Jake's way of helping? He plants one heck of a kiss on her, leaving Jake with the realization that yes, this woman is his mate.
As Lira is a human, she's unaware that the connection she feels with Jake is because they're mates. So after spending a steamy night with him, she tries to preemptively avoid, what in her opinion equates to the morning after a one-night stand, by slipping out while he's sleeping. She doesn't want to leave, yet feels she needs to.
With Ethan acting weird, and telling people the wedding is still happening, Magda, Lira's foster mother, suggests Lira take some time away and visit her Mom's people. It seems there's some information Lira needs to be made aware. Hmm...
Unfortunately Jake can't quite hunt down his missing mate like he wants to yet as he's been tasked with returning his family to Grayslake per Ty, the Itan. Yeah, of course Lira is heading to Grayslake on her family quest.
Will Jake and Lira be reunited? Will Lira have trouble accepting the truth about her heritage? Will Lira fully grasp what being mated means? Will Jake's bear be patient enough to give her time to adjust to all these revelations that she's facing? Will Ethan finally go away? Will Jake and Lira get their HEA?
One-click now to find out all these answers and more. This is a cute story about a couple unexpectedly finding their mate and, for one of them, learning where they come from. While this novella is a part of Celia Kyle's Grayslake series, thanks to Kindle Worlds, I feel you can still safely follow this story without having previously read that series. Although, as it's a fantastic series, I do highly recommend you check it out.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
In this book we meet Lira and Jake. Lira has just broken up with her fiance Ethan after she walked in on him with her best friend. Ethan however is not quite ready for it to be over yet. No matter how much Lira pushes him away he is determined to get her back by any means necessary. So when she goes out for a drink in another town and he is there all she wants is to get away. That is when she gets her first look at Jake. Jake rescues her but Lira isn't sure if he is rescuing her because he wants her or if he is doing it because he really cares about her. Can you make a connection that will last with just 1 look? Also can she take on him and all the family secrets that she is learning?
Jake walks into the bar to have something to eat and drink before he has to help his family move to Grayslake the next day, but 1 look at Lira has him making another plan. Jake and Lira get that night together but when he wakes up she is gone all he has is her first name so he doesn't know how to track her down. Jake knows she is his mate he just has to get the woman on the same page. Oh ya and that little problem he has finding her first to convince her. Can he get the woman that fate has meant for him or will all the obstacles in their life be to much?
What do you get when you have 2 people who meet, hook-up and loose track of one another, with a couple of grandma's thrown in the mix? An amazing story. This story is great because it really shows what happens with you are finally able to get past the hurt and find a way to go after something that is perfect for you. This story wouldn't be all that good if there wasn't some mystery and some adversaries that just won't go away. This story will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I want to tell you all about everything that happens but as a reader I hate spoilers and you never know what someone will consider a spoiler. I will say this needs to be on everyone's must read list. I highly recommend it.
i want you, i dont want you, i want you but i didnt tell you so that means you dont want me anymore and i should pack up and leave. damn this girl gave me whiplash.
The first half of the book was good som parts even really good, then it slid down the hill to end with a mushy HEA. I liked the thought of two mates where one of them just thought it was a one-night-stand and the other wanting to chase the lost mate down but not being able. The author could have spun this an other round or two, instead they find each other far too soon. And this is where the story goes down hill for me.
The second half of the book I just wanted it all to end, or at least speed up and have some action. Still there are parts that are good so the book is not a total bust.
This is my first read by Flora Dare and I was highly impressed. The writing style fit perfectly into the Grayslake World. Sexy and humorous. Gran and Memaw brought most of the funny, but I could relate to the teenage wolf Nancy who chose to read her books in a closet so they couldn't be taken away. Lira and Jake had no problem bringing the sexy. The only actual issue I had with the story was how well Lira took the news of shifters, she took it really really well, and I know if someone shifted in front of me there would be some major freaking out before I calmed down enough to appreciate how freakin' cool that was. I really liked how Lira wasn't just passively accepting of the mate claim. I wrote a review earlier today stating my hatred of inst-love with few exceptions....shifter books are usually that exception although I still prefer where they take the time to get to know each other before just happily accepting their fate. Lira is no fool, scared maybe, but she makes Jake work for it, and he does with only minor outbursts. If you like the Grayslake series or just in the mood for a quick shifter romance this is a great bet.
Lira has broken up with her fiance after catching him him and her best friend in bed together. To get away from all the pity she goes to a bar 2 towns over. Somehow her ex finds her there and harasses her. She is saved by Jake a werebear shifter. He knows Lira is his mate. After an amazing night together, Lira sneaks away thinking it was just a one night stand. Jake wants to chase after her but he has to transport his grandmother to Grayslake her new home. She takes pleasure in making him spot several times a day while he is longing to chase down his mate. Lira is having problems at home. Ethan won't leave her alone and her anger feelings are causing problems. Her mother's friend Magda sends her to Grayslake to find out the truth about herself and her family. She ends up staying at a B&B..the same one that Jake's grandma is going to stay with. What happens when the 2 lovers meet again is really worth reading. I really enjoyed the grandmas. They had unique personalities and enjoyed making their families a little uncomfortable. A vintage vibrator collection.. gross and strangely fascinating
