Valerius: A Roman Soldier's Quest For Glory

Rate this book
Before Gauis (from From Glory to Glory) faced off against the proud and arrogant Valerius, there was a young man whose only desire was to escape his cruel and domineering father. Born of a slave and destined to live the life of a tenant farmer, Valerius dreamed of another life, of honor and glory. Falling into a drunken stupor, Valerius’ father was on the verge of losing everything. Taking the initiative, Valerius works hard to fulfill his father’s obligation, impressing General Sextus.

His ungrateful father, resenting his son’s new found status, steals away in the night taking Valerius’ brother and mother. In his anguish Valerius joins the army of General Sextus and focuses his pain and anger against the enemies of Rome. Excelling in strength and skill Valerius finds himself as a tool of powerful and ambitious men. The young idealist son of a slave, Valerius resigns himself to be the best tool in General Sextus’ army.

For an author writing is as necessary as breathing. They don't write for money or to court literary fame, but because they believe they have something to say. It matters not that anyone will read or listen, the words must be written, and if in the process someone is blessed -- all the more wonderful

Dr. Perkins has written for a long time, but only recently has sought to publish his work and venture into new genres. He believes in education, finally earning his doctorate at the age of 55. He believes that learning never ends, giving fodder to the imagination and breathing life into the characters on his page. His hope is to continue telling stories for a new generation of readers and aspiring authors.

Dr. Perkins' first novel is "Centurion: From glory to glory", but is not his first book. He has written "Legacy to my sons", "The Lost Shepherd", "The prayer of a transformed life", "The Cost", and a verity of Christian Youth Devotionals.

Interesting story about life in the Roman military in the late Julio-Claudian imperial period. Nice depiction of lives of ordinary Romans and the brutal life of a soldier. Nicely written story. Personally, I think it ended too soon but then books these days all seem to be stretched into multiple books for revenue enhancement. The character development was good but not exceptional.
I enjoyed the read.
