Rating: 2.5 stars.
I agreed to read this book based on the blurb - genetic modification and covert ops? Awesome. I was looking forward to, based on the description, romantic-suspense. That is not what I got.
Based on the number of plot holes and underdeveloped areas, it seems like this book may have started out as a shorter story that was eventually added to. (Having gone back and looked at some of the reviews, this may be the case).
To note - I waited a day to write this review, hoping that after I had time to process it further, my review would be more favorable. Sadly, this is not the case.
As I started to read, I noticed the many elements of the plot similar to Christine Feehan's Ghostwalker series, and various other paranormal romance plots - hero and heroine are inexplicably drawn to one another (due to scent, genetics, breed-mate status, blood, etc.) and cannot fight this burning, raging attraction (even though they hate/dislike/distrust/are strangers), and the only solution is to rip each other's clothes off (but first they have to stake a claim and exhibit unrealistic and obsessive moments of jealousy and possession), blah, blah, blah.
Sigh.
There is so much more that could have been done with this book. The premise is an interesting one - perfect matches based on genetics? Fascinating idea, and one that seems fairly plausible. So...how does it work? I really want to know, because that is how my brain works. I love science, and if a book is going to utilize a scientific field to drive its plot, then it needs to follow through. Don't just gloss over it, since it is such a large premise of the book.
As a couple, Loren and Adam just did not do it for me; they reminded me of teenagers just learning to navigate "romantic" relationships. Being in each one's head hurt my head. I did, however, enjoy some of the secondary characters, including Chase, Rowan, and Xander. Each added humor and intrigue to the plot, and I want to know their stories.
As a setup to future books, Heated Match works, but on its own it falls short of presenting a well-developed story; there is just too much going on.
I wasn't sure I was going to continue with the series, but after I read the first chapter of Book 2, at the end of Heated Match, I found myself wanting to know how the over-arching storyline develops.
This story line has a wealth of potential, and I am hoping that the subsequent books delve deeper in to the elements of the plot, with less focus on the "OMG-best-orgasm-of-my-life-never had it this good- completely didn't realize I was undressing you in public-maybe we should get a room-but we shouldn't be doing this" moments.
It is a fairly quick read, and the steamy parts are quite steamy, which on its own makes it worth the time spent reading it.
