In today's busy world, finding physical and mental space for peace and calm amidst the competing demands of work, family and friends can be a challenge. Mindfulness is a simple and powerful practice that can help you cut through the noise and reclaim tranquillity, wherever you are. The Mindfulness Journal offers an introduction to mindfulness and easy exercises that can be done whether you are sitting at your desk, squeezed on to a crowded train, or standing in line at the supermarket. Beautifully illustrated, with notes pages to record your thoughts, this journal is your indispensable companion to a more peaceful, stress-free day.
This was a very thoughtful gift from a friend who knows that I often struggle with stress and anxiety over a myriad of things. I took my time reading through this, even though I could have read it in one sitting, and I'm glad I did because it gave me a chance to actually try out a few of the many meditative mindfulness practices that the book provides.
The book seems to cover almost every possible situation where you might need a dose of mindfulness to get you through - everything from getting to sleep, gardening, the work commute, and dealing with grief/loss is covered in here, and all the practices are realistic and simply written. The practices are accompanied by lots of pretty illustrations, and steer clear of any kind of spiritual content which I really appreciated. There are also lots of blank pages for you to take notes in, as the 'journal' element of the book's title suggests - this is where it falls a little flat for me, in that the pages are blank (I would prefer lined pages), and the binding is quite tight so it would be a little difficult to write in it.
Overall though, this is a great mindfulness collection, and one of the most practical and accessible ones I've seen so far. I look forward to tabbing the practices that will be the most useful to me, and practicing meditation and mindfulness more regularly,
I know this book has been written with the best of intentions, but it is only one idea, repeated in each page but in different circumstances. Could've easily been a 5-10 pages article on mindfulness.
I appreciated the few, but unique, imaginative ways that can be applied when coping with stress or negative thoughts (e.g. labeling thoughts, or seeing regret as a sandcastle who vanishes in the sea).
However, I can't escape the feeling I had while reading this: that the author makes mindfulness look so easy to practice, like someone is telling you "do this and that" and POOF it's all done. For some people it might be easy, I can't contest it. In my opinion, it might take weeks, months, or even years for most people to master the practice of it to the extent that is described in the book. It doesn't go well from the first time of trying it. The mind wanders. The body moves. The breathing is hard to control. I have been practicing meditation for more than 2 years, with often intreruptions. Sometimes it does wonders, sometimes it has no effect whatsoever. Nevertheless, I believe that perseverence js the key in mastering everything, including mindfulness. It might be hard for me and others to practice it regularly, but it might work better for y'all.
Props to the aesthetic of the book tho, very pleasing.
A beautifully designed to-the-point book on Mindfulness in an over saturated market. The space to journal thoughts and observations is a welcome addition however due the binding the book is very tricky to write in. For anyone looking for a more in depth book on the subject I (like the author) recommend Full Catastrophe Living: How to Cope With Stress, Pain and Illness Using Mindfulness Meditation by Jon Kabat-Zinn.
This would make a nice gift and introduction to Mindfulness.
A thoroughly soothing read... The mindful approach is made more easily accessible through Corinne Sweets’ writing. She aptly made the concept of mindfulness less daunting and very much adaptable to everyday life. It caters to both specific and general occasions. I have combined her exercises with my current meditation and yin yoga practice. They all mesh into a perfect blend of blissful mindfulness. I would strongly recommend this read!
tl;dr Not a bad book if you take it slow and really let the exercises & quotes resonate with you. Take your time, definitely try to journal with it, and it can be pretty useful. :) It may not have everything you need, but it could be worth exploring.
Not tl;dr:
To start off, I will say: this book is what you'd expect from the genre. Short little exercises in various situations, that do dumb down to the basics of mindfulness (be aware of yourself & surroundings, breathe, continue your day), so don't go in expecting this to blow you away.
THAT SAID, if you don't read this book all at once, I think it's really good actually. I read this over the course of several months, reading a page or two almost every day, and I think that made a big difference in my opinion of this book. The content is repetitive, which can make you feel a bit cheated on buying this book just to read the same paragraph over and over, BUT, because of that repetition, if you read it over a long period of time, the points start to hammer themselves in, and it starts to take effect. I did notice myself pausing more often, thinking more often, and in general having the words from this book echo in my head.
The exercises and ideas were explained succinctly and were kept simple and approachable enough that you could easily do them in the moment or could imagine yourself doing them when you needed. Though the core idea was the same for all the situations, I still appreciated the variety of situations, just to really show you can be mindful no matter where you are, what's happening around you, etc.
I liked the illustrations that broke up the text in between the pages. Felt like it gave you a chance to pause and contemplate what you just read. I also really liked the quotes, many seemed quite thoughtful, and given the variety, I'm sure at least a few resonated with most readers. (I know I wrote a few down and sent pics to a few friends of some.) There was also plenty of space to write out your thoughts in the book, both in the space around the text, and also on the pages that were clearly intended for note taking.
I do wish there was a little more /something/ in this book, but it's hard to say what exactly. But for what it is, it's not a bad book and I appreciate the idea of it. (If you're looking for something as a cute gift or coffee table book, this isn't a bad choice, honestly. I got mine from Five Below for 5$, so super cheap!)
I think my biggest gripe with it is the lack of page numbers. I have no idea why they never included them, but be /mindful/ not to lose your bookmark, else you'll have a hard time finding where you left off. ;) (I will note, when I complained to my partner about this issue, he had a hoot of a time telling me to breathe, relax my shoulders, be aware the book did this with purpose, there are lessons to learn here--little butt, haha.)
Trăim sub o apăsare constantă a stresului, a agitației cotidiene, a conflictelor.
By far one of the worst self-help books I've ever read. It aligns cognitive therapy with ~magical benefits~ such as no longer experiencing any physical pain in the intensive care ward.
This books only saving grace was the beautiful use of negative space and illustrations by Marcia Mihotich - if the written work wasn't so preachy and I was to rate this book on aesthetics alone it would be a 5/5. I loved the texture, flat graphics and consistent and appropriately 'calming' teal.
Don't waste your money: there are plenty of simple meditation books that offer much more helpful information that don't feel patronizing.
A soothing and serene read. This book shares many mindfulness exercises for specific emotions and experiences that one may have throughout the day, such as confrontation, sleepless nights, racing thoughts and preparing for the day ahead. I especially enjoyed the simple and soothing illustrations and inspirational quotes that reinforce the book's overall concepts of positivity and resilience. This is just the right book to dip into when in search of a mindful moment.
This is a great book to help guide you to mindfulness. It starts with several pages to introduce the reader to what mindfulness is and some basic ways to start practicing it. Then there are several exercises and some blank lined pages to record your journey through mindfulness. Some exercises may seem silly, but I figure why not try them. I received a free copy from Harmony Books and Rodale Books in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
I am giving this three stars because I like the idea of it. I like the quotes, I like that there is mindfulness practices for many regular occurrences, I like the journaling. But I don’t find the execution to be very practical. Unless you carry the book all the time, how can you implement your mindfulness practices in the moment? And I think I want someone reading it to me so that I could relax like it tells me to.
A nice easy read. Some beautiful quotes and helpful exercises for incorporating mindfulness into your everyday life. The author takes into account all sorts of situations and emotions that might arise, and provides meditations that will help you move through it without letting your emotions take over.
Loaned this one by my Yoga Teacher (obvs.) this is a light entry level book to Mindfulness really. It's a easy short read, essentially you could boil this down to 'Stop, Breathe, Appreciate your surroundings' but then I mean that is kind of the point. This was nice gateway to a lot of other more in-depth texts, I particularly liked a lot of the quotations and illustrations.
Mindfulness should be a simple practice, but one that I certainly overlook. This book is a short reminder to just breathe, and be more aware of your surroundings. Filled with little exercises, quotes, and some space for your own notes and doodles. Would make a thoughtful gift.
Really made me think and want to get into been more mindful! I have even signed up to a mindfulness day retreat! I think this is worth a read by all, the rushes of life have us all putting our mental health on the back burner!
Really beautifully designed helpful little book. I read it before bed and in the morning to wind down/gently wake up. Some great ideas in it and there is a list of recommendations at the end for mindfulness retreats etc. really nice gentle book full of little mindfulness activities
I bought this thinking it would be an interactive journal that I could write in. It is not. It is full of great mediatations for plenty of situations in your life.
I'm sorry but this was the worst self help book ever... 222 pg repeating the same thing over and over again, and yeah it is a good tehnique..but 3-4 pages would be enough
