Cinders

He currently holds a Canada Council for the Arts Research and Creation Grant and an ArtsNL Professional Projects Grant for the completion of his first two Newfoundland-set novels, a treasure-hunt novel and a literary fiction novel exploring toxicity within the Newfoundland arts scene, respectively.
He holds an Honours Degree in English from the Memorial University of Newfoundland with a minor in Anthropology. He studied Journalism at College of the North Atlantic in Stephenville, Newfoundland. He has worked with Transcontinental Publishing as well as student-youth magazine The Troubadour.
He has been called "the face of Newfoundland Genre writing" and is one of the most successful authors working and living in his province today.

A truly enjoyable mystery. I particularly enjoyed how the different parts of the story came together at the end.

To sum it up in one word? Incredible. I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel beyond hints from The Long Road, but it certainly was an amazing ride. The way Xander has changed for this book and the way Matthew ties the story together through a few separate points of view makes for a really engaging story. In a lot of ways this book shows a real shift in Xander away from who he was in the Black Womb series and opens up a lot of doors for him to be able to change into a driving force that is more secure in himself then ever before.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series. This feels like it was but a taste of what can happen next and makes me excited to see what Matthew does with this new spin on an old character.

I absolutely could not put this down.

Characters were sympathetic and interesting and plot had lots of twists and turns to make you keep turning the pages. Better copy-editing could be helpful as frequent problems with word usage were distracting.

The character development is phenomenal and the story shines. Highly recommend for fans of the Coral Beach Casefiles, and Detective Horton is the perfect complimentary character to the vigilante Xander Drew. Great start to the series!
