This actually felt like a perfect end to the series even though I know that there are still more books to come.
Loved this - completely over the top and angsty and dramatic. Angelique is so beautiful, so spirited, so gentle, so everything and yet this novel still works.
Can't talk about the major plot points in this book because it would be a major spoiler, but I will say I Knew it!
Fabulous escapist reading which occasionally lapses into sentimentality, but holds the reader’s interest with plenty of plot twists and historical detail. Suspended between worlds old and new, ‘Angelique in Love’ supplies enough back story and romance to breathe fresh life into the Bildungsroman genre. Check out that cover and byline!
The action in this book picks up immediately where Angelique in Revolt (Book 4) left off. Angelique had found shelter working in the home of a Huguenot merchant in La Rochelle, but they are now facing imminent arrest from the King's men for their religious beliefs. The Huguenots flee, but there's only one captain around willing to take them to the Indies - the mysterious pirate Rescator. That would be the mysterious pirate Rescator who bought Angelique at a slave auction, but she ran away before he really gained possession. Think there might just be a wee bit of tension between the two?
Things really heat up on deck when the townspeople realize the ship has gone just a bit too far north for the West Indies and tensions reach the boiling point...
"They were in the midst of a desert of mists and silence, an icy limbo hustling the living to their death."
Well, you know I can't tell. This was a lot of fun, with most of the action taking place on board ship and plenty of dirty dealings, twists and turns and more. I thought the last 100 or so pages dragged on a bit with too much telling instead of showing as some older back history was covered. The next book in the series is The Countess Angelique (Book 6), but if you are looking for a break, this one ends on an up-note and would be a good place to stop.
This takes place mainly on board a ship with much misunderstanding between the two groups of people contained within it. I thought the author was going to drag on the main protagonist's failure to recognise Rescator for who he is but she put them out of their misery fairly promptly - to replace it with a bit more, naturally! This series remains surprisingly readable if one accepts the heroic or superhuman status of the hero and heroine (especially the latter).
After all, that's what heroes are, no? It's no different to Jack Reacher, really :)
Lovely story with mature characters. Full of adventure and unpredictability, even though most of it is spent on a ship. Reminded me of Outlander since it has to do with a married couple; though, of course, this book was written in the sixties. But it's got the same kind of lore, where most romance happens after marriage, as it develops, not before. Kicked off a star because the story, so vibrant while on the ship, lost traction once they got on land and endless setup began. But still overall a super quality read.
This is totally a wonderful series!!! I have been waiting and waiting to re-read this book, knowing full well that at last many of the secrets of the 5 preceding stories will finally be revealed. Rescator? A pirate? the Rebel of Poitou? or whatever he is, i don't care much but He is a very talentive guy who has a brave heart and a big brain! And his love with Angelique is just unbelievable! On Angeliques side, she left her burning love for a man she'd had two sons and she think he died for a long time - her husband! The enjoyment of this book is in seeing the couple attempt to reconcile their complex feelings for each other. Simply a marvelous book!

I normally don't read novels, but this one was a bit too catchy for me. The writer has described the atmosphere of France, New world and the ship in such minute details that the reader is transported to that very location and feels himself a part of the story. Wonderfully written, worth reading
I am so glad this series of books was recommended to me years ago. I still own them (had to buy them used off Internet sellers). The Angelique series, by husband and wife team Serge and Anne Golon, is one of the most chock-full of history series ever written. I have to smile when I think the books had to be marketed as "bodice rippers" in order to sell them. I learned more French history, and later early Canadian, history from these books than from any college text books. Yeah, there's the occasional sexual encounter to spice the series up, but overall these are fabulous books for any serious student of French lit and history. Do yourself a favor and meet Angelique. I wish some screenwriters and producers would resurrect these books as a mini series for a new generation.
Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Fabulous series. An all time favorite. Seriously gives credence to the old adage, you can't judge a book by its cover! Amazing, well written fiction, inane cover art. I'm grateful I stumbled upon the Golon's wonderful works. And Rescator...you dashing rake, you scoundrel, you hardened man, that brilliant wit....I knew who you were!!!!! I give this book 5 giant, luminous stars!!
I didn't know that there are more than 7 parts of Angelique. O it is a very nice surprise for me - I really enjoyed reading of Anne Golon writings and her beautiful stories of love and intrigues. I recommend to everyone who "crave" for a good romance and adventure with real love and lively backgrounds.
