"No person can wear one face to him or herself, and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be true." Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64) We live in complex times, bombarded by more news and information—more marketing glitz and consumerism—in one day than our ancestors experienced in a lifetime. We may have acquired a lot of "stuff," but it’s no wonder that real happiness and contentment are harder to come by. Here are 365 simple ways to turn down the volume, get clear about you own values and priorities, and reclaim life on your terms. Each tip includes a provocative quote from an historic literary, scholarly, religious, or cultural figure, followed by inspirational commentary that applies each idea to a particular aspect of contemporary life.
