Chasing the Chupacabra by Hank Edwards
Critter Catchers series #2. Paranormal monster mystery.
Demetrius and Cody started Critter Catchers after their first successful monster hunt. But business has been slow. They get a request to find out what or who is causing the goats to bleed out. Taking the job, expecting a chupacabra, but hoping it’s not, Demmy and Cody are once again in the middle of a job where they will need to be very lucky to walk away from.

A job I would run away from, Demmy and Cody need the money so are all in.
Fast moving, amusing and maybe even horrifying, this second book in the series is monster hunting is unusual.

Things have been quiet at Critter Catchers since their 15 minutes of popularity after the brouhaha with the werewolf (oops, I mean wolfman — it's an important distinction!). Too quiet. It's late winter, critters are hibernating rather than wreaking havoc in Parsons Hollow homes, and Demetrius and Cody are barely able to keep their new business afloat.

So it's good news when a neighboring farmer hires them to capture whatever creature has been preying on his herd of goats — right? Well, maybe not, when it turns out the goats have all been exsanguinated. And the stealthy, barely-glimpsed killer looks like no animal the duo has ever seen or heard of.

Although less than enthused about another possibly paranormal adventure, Cody and Demetrius can't turn down a paying job. So, with the handsome farmer and a lovely veterinary student in tow, off they go in pursuit of what sounds strangely like the mythical chupacabra. Much mayhem ensues.

Much of what I enjoyed in the first book was here again: the humor; the multi-dimensionality of the MCs, who could have been treated as dumb good-old-boys, but are much more than that; and most of all, the lack of romance. Yes, you heard that right. No romance! Yet. ;)

The two guys are lifelong best friends, Demetrius gay (with a boyfriend) and Cody straight (with an almost endless string of short-term girlfriends left in his wake). But each is struggling with disturbing new feelings toward the other, setting up lots of UST and teasing the possibility of an eventual romance somewhere down the line. I am a complete sucker for UST and I'm enjoying this slooooooow burn so much I can hardly tell you.

But... Notice the 3 star rating? That's because around 60% the story went completely off the rails. I mean, there's only so much disbelief one person can suspend. Chupacabras, yes. , no. And action scenes are definitely not this author's forte.

Still, I'm having so much fun with Cody & Demetrius that I immediately bought book 3. So stay tuned for further updates...

Cody and Demetrius are back for another case. Think Scooby Doo with a nod to Supernatural and gay sex.

Is this good in the proudly force it on people with no fear of judgement, future students will study this in school sense? No.

Is this good in the it makes me happy and I enjoyed it at a time when other, "better" books completely fail to hold my interest sense? Yes. Yes it is. Maybe not quite as good as the first, I'm not sure, it's been a while. I can't quite remember how that one turned out and the reveal here felt a bit underwhelming. But whatever, it worked for me now.

Now... on to the next, or do I roll the dice with something else?

Audiobook Review

Story: 4 stars
Narration: 3.5 stars

I liked the narration of this much better than the first book but I still had to slow it down. I don’t really like how this narrator talks women. There’s something that just doesn’t sound good to me.

I loved this story and how Cody & Demmy are starting to get feelings for each other. Even with Demetrius dating Oliver I didn’t mind Oliver.

I liked the way the chupacabra story played out. These books are just so much fun! I listened to this in one day and they move fast and are on the shorter side.

Demmy and Cody are back in a wild adventure that doesn’t disappoint. Hank Edwards continues his brand of fun, humor, sexy men and the paranormal in Chasing the Chupacabra.

Despite their first paranormal case of a wolfman, Demmy and Cody just want life to be normal and for their business to pick up. They are riding the business red line, and it makes neither man comfortable. However, things being what they are, Cody and Demmy approach the strife in classic best bud style when they are engaged in an unidentified critter case.

I loved the Supernatural/X-Files feel this series of books has, in addition to the romance gently weaved into the story. Edwards creates his own version of the paranormal romance, blending the supernatural and the slow-burn feelings both Demmy and Cody are experiencing in an excellent manner. It’s not all smut or romance either, as the hilarious antics of both men and the people that inhabit Parson’s Hollow return to not only help out with Cody and Demmy’s case but in their personal lives as well. Edwards ramps up the UST between the men, and it doesn’t let go.

Feelings are happening and neither man is certain just exactly what is going on between them, but something definitely is! And it isn’t just the strange and paranormal happenings that seem to be plaguing Parson’s Hollow.

Chasing the Chupacabra is a fun and hilarious romp from the safety of my tablet screen, and I can’t wait to see where Hank Edwards takes us, and Cody and Demmy, next.

Note to self: Please check if there is another book in the series. I kept thinking "What happened with the wolf man? What was up with that? Why is there no explanation?" Duh. You skipped book 1. Ooops.

Anyway, Demetrius and Cody have a company catching stray animals but things are not going well and they are on their last legs financially until they get asked to help figure out what is killing a local farmer's goats. I did not click m/m for this because Cody is straight and Demetrius is gay and while there is a fair bit of daydreaming on either part about the other, Demetrius has a boyfriend who is a journalist and Cody sleeps with many girls.

Anyway, they end up chasing the goat killer which leads to a bigger mystery. It's all done with light hand, it's not a realistic story, but it's a fun one with lots of character. Still, I didn't really connect. Maybe because it's not really m/m yet? I'm sure it will be eventually. I like this author so I may go back and read book 1. I don't think that really diminished much from the story, maybe I just wasn't in the mood. *shrug*

Chasing the Chupacabra picks up a couple months after book 1. Critter Catchers (Animal Control with Heart) is limping along after their last adventure, and Cody and Demmy are trying to get back to normal. I love that they think they can do that!

The creature they're up against this time is completely unexpected, even with the title giving a huge hint. I love that their circle "in the know" is getting bigger. And that they can't help themselves from getting into quirky, funny situations along the way. A nice balance of humor, mystery/suspense, and a friendship on the edge of becoming something more. On to book 3!

I am enjoying this series and I like that the monsters are truly monsters in this series. It's a definite very slow build on the relationship side but I'm looking forward to when the two finally connect as more than friends. I can't say I've read a book with a chupacabra in it before so that was interesting in and of itself. As I mentioned above Demetrius and Cody are still best friends in this book and there isn't a lot of forward movement although it was nice to see Cody thinking about Demmy in different ways than he is used to. There is a lot of chemistry between the two but also a strain since Demmy is in a relationship with Oliver and spending time with Demmy that normally Cody would. There is also a bit of strain between Demmy and Oliver and it isn't much of a stretch to see the demise of that relationship eventually. I like the slow build between Demmy and Cody and look forward to the next book to see how much changes.

The plot in this one was a little less in depth as the previous book but still enjoyable and the resolution was definitely a surprise to me. Plenty of action and monster hunting and some humor (with the widow) thrown in to lighten things up a bit.

Overall, very enjoyable and I look forward to book #3.

4.5 star series. Be prepared to suspend reality and enjoy a low angst, mild drama, warm, charming story, sort of X-files meets X-rated Scooby Doo. We have two guys just trying to do their jobs, but stumbling into one paranormal mystery after another. They have no experience investigating, policing or using weapons, so all they have is their wits, what they have on hand and good old common sense to get out of tough situations. Excellent writing, great combination of descriptive surroundings with great dialogue.

Series of 7 books following the same couple, must be read in order as it’s a slow/burn friends to lovers story. We have a full spectrum of lovely storytelling with some pining for a straight best friend, bi-awakening, monster hunting, mild violence and gore, mild injury, small town issues, big family dynamics. This series is incredibly balanced with romance, sexiness and actual plot, very well done and left me satisfied and entertained on all fronts.

Book 8 is about another couple, same universe. I skipped it as I wasn’t too invested in the characters, whom we had met through the other books.

HEA, series, same couple, vers, m/m, best friends to lovers, monsters/urban legends, mystery.

I really enjoyed this one. It fixed my biggest complaint about the first book, in that there wasn't enough time devoted to the actual critter. This one definitely gave the monster case more time, and the insane left turn it takes in the final act where it devolves into something out of a Resident Evil game was wacky and awesome. The slow burn is still slow, and I'm still here for it.

"Chasing the Chupacabra" by Hank Edwards is book two in the "Critter Catchers" series. I can't help but love this series. Hank does such a great job with his characters and the situations they find themselves in. Cody and Demetrius are in a lull moment of business when Agatha comes to their booth at a convention. She tells them what is happening and the two decide to take the job because they desperately need the money. While they are checking out the site and setting up their traps, they get a little more than what they bargained for. This story was so well written and takes you right on the adventure with Cody and Demmy. My favorite scene was when Zydeco barks and wants Cody, Demetrius, Oliver, and Agatha to follow him. I also enjoyed the scene when Cody and Demmy went to Oliver 's workplace to remove the bats. I laughed so hard at that scene.

My favorite thing about this series is the byplay between Demmy and Cody. Cody is such a big, happy, wide open kid with a smart mouth and killer looks. Demmy is the more serious, patient voice of reason who manages the details of their business and steps in to smooth over ruffled feathers when Cody's sarcasm or temper (or past dating history) gets them in hot water. But their dialog is hilarious! These are two guys know each other better than anyone else--almost better than they know themselves. They've always been just friends; even gay Demmy has been immune to Cody's sexual magnetism. But things began changing in book one. I am including a spoiler here for people who want to know if the guys do get together in this book. The paranormal aspect is entertaining and even more far-fetched than the first. There are plenty of dangerous situations and near misses to keep readers turning the pages quickly. I am completely in love with the guys and eager to check out the next book in the series.

Here we go, book two. And you need book one to understand the players and the feelings of this one.

So this poor town, at one time so peaceful and now, wow blood bath. Dem and Oliver have started a relationship, Cody is not handling it well, but no one is catching on that the straight friend is or has always been jealous and wants Dem all to himself. Although I think Oliver finally got it. And is trying his best to be a wedge between the pair, without being obvious. Because Cody is still a man child, to Dem Cody is just acting like a brat.

Business is picking up, and things are looking better for the two, then they catch another blood bath case. The chase and catch of the creature was fun and watching everyone get involved with that.

But once again, I just can’t put my finger on this story, the pulse. I’m not a fan of any of these people, Oliver has an agenda, Cody is too ‘man child’ and Dem is to passive. None of it is working for me.

Cody and Demmy may be town heroes after their run-in with the wolf man but, unfortunately, their critter-catching business has been slowly drying up. Further, Cody in particular is wrestling with some changing feelings about his best friend Demmy. Things fortunately start to turn around with a new mysterious creature call. These are both such good-hearted, earnest men, and it's genuinely affecting seeing them both struggling. I'm rooting for them!

Critter Catchers recently basked in the glory of business after they helped rid Parson’s Hollow of a werewolf—no, wolfman— but the phone isn’t ringing nearly as much these days, and Cody and Demmy are once again stressed out about the longevity of their business. It really doesn’t help that Demmy is seeing Oliver romantically, Cody doesn’t like the reporter one bit, and a woman named Agatha wants to hire them to look into a most unusual situation…. A local farmer’s goats are turning up dead overnight, and what’s even weirder—their blood has been sucked dry.

After seeing the gentle progression in Book One that Hank Edwards was taking with Cody and Demmy trying to figure themselves (and each other) out, I knew I needed to be mentally prepared for inner longings and inappropriate fantasies quickly being squashed out of conscious thought, but geez… it was rough. I adore Demmy. Adore him! And his moments of self-doubt or loathing utterly destroy my heart, but from the beginning, I was pulled toward Cody’s much more in-your-face character growth. He’s loud, inappropriate, and obnoxious sometimes, but even though he doesn’t quite understand himself yet, he loves Demmy. And his 110% commitment to his best friend—as that and nothing more—is just some of the most beautiful development I’ve ever read in a book, let alone one that intends to be a humorous paranormal! Cody Bower is most certainly character envy for any author.

In between more run-ins with Cody’s exes (a cop, a doctor, a librarian) who all begrudgingly help Demmy out as he sets to uncover the mystery of the giant monster lurking in the woods outside of Farmer Wilkes property, the poor man is also dealing with feelings for Oliver that might not be as… strong as he thought. Sure, Demmy likes Oliver. But does he love him? Does he see forever when he thinks of Oliver? And when Oliver uses ‘Demmy,’ a nickname only Cody has used, things aren’t feeling so… certain.

Edwards creates some really memorable side characters in this series, one being Demmy’s Aunt Amelia. I have such a soft spot and adoration for when a main character has at least one close, older family member he can lean on, and that’s Amelia in spades. No nonsense, but caring, gentle, so proud of her nephew and never judgmental of him being gay, and she’s got an adorable habit of swearing—but utilizing tree names instead of curses.

Oh birch trees! This was such a phenomenal addition to Critter Catchers.

There are even more crazy shenanigans that find Cody and Demetrius here with this installment and while I won't say all of it works, it's clear that crazy is the theme of everything here. Characters, paranormal, action, emotions, questions...all of it is either bred by or breeding craziness.

With a bit of an emotional tangle happening I'm disconcerted by the complications we have with intimate relationships of various types here. Cody is still being himself, only now he's acting before thinking even with Demmy and it's causing more problems than normal. In addition to his semi-dating and blatant flirting with multiple women we've got his interests and denials flying around in his simple brain and I'm not really finding myself caring about him anymore. I also think he got a bit more annoying in this story than I'm okay with. I'll absolutely admit to being curious about how he broaches the feelings question he's got for Demmy in the coming stories though.

But while we can definitely see that there's an impending emotional roller coaster that's coming for the men, there's also a bit of ridiculous coming at them in the form of a case that's both dramatic and confusing. Some aspects are a little predictable, but the flow of the big confrontation is pretty much chaos. The writing and sequencing follows exactly what's going on and chaos is basically what they're experiencing and I caught myself re-reading sections to make sure I wasn't missing something. Virtually every connection was spelled out by a remorseful "bad guy" and it seemed way too simple for the mystery we seemed to be leading up to.

Now this wasn't a bad read at all, and being quite short was both a positive and a negative, yet I don't exactly feel compelled to continue the series. If I had a few hours to kill I'd probably binge the whole thing just to see how Cody and Demetrius figure themselves out, but that's only if I didn't find anything else to snag my attention first. These stories are definitely entertaining and I'm being quite nit-picky here, so I just don't think the writing style is my vibe.

My boys are back! Dadgummit, they're back!!! In 'Chasing the Chupacabra, Critter Catchers Book 2', we find that Demi and Cody are in bad shape financially. After their rise in popularity for successfully subduing a 'super critter' (in Book 1), winter leaves them with little work and nearly empty bank accounts. Luckily spring is right around the corner and they were able to land a new client whose goats were being exsanguinated by some unknown creature. Being offered double their asking fee, the boys dive right into their 'trap-capture-release' routine only to find themselves facing yet another paranormal entity.
What is truly wonderful about this series is the smooth way the characters interact with each other. Hank Edwards pens believable dialog between the protagonists and among the secondary characters in the book without relying on excessive snark! He develops the transitioning of the relationship from friends to lovers so subtly, it's nothing short of magical! The premise is awesome! A couple of hometown boys who were friends since kindergarten decide to start a business together! Awww... That we know they will become lovers is just so wonderful! It captured my heart right from the start. Mentioning hometown, the world Mr. Edwards creates is just so delightful! I didn't know I could fall head-over-heels in love with ANY book with a small-town setting. This series represented a whole lot of firsts for me that left me receptive to the work of many other M/M romance writers. Thanks for growing me, Hank Edwards.

Demmy and Cody are back in their second adventure after the Wolfman incident. After a few months of clients, their business has hit a slump and now they're struggling to pay the bills. If they don't find more clients, they'll slide further into the red and might have to close. Demmy unofficially has a boyfriend in this book and it's the first Wolfman suspect, Oliver, or as Cody calls him, Ollie.

Demmy and Cody finally have a bit of luck when a client calls them about goats being drained of their blood on a local farm. It sounds like a wild animal or something else. As both men investigate, they once again stumble on something creepy and scary with a chupacabra lurking around the farm of a farmer who is cruel to his dog. Both men are hesitant and have some suspicions about what might be happening.

Once again, Cody and Demmy have some run-ins with Cody's ex-girlfriends and Oliver pops up again. It's a bit awkward between all three men because there's some tension between Cody and Demmy as they remain clueless about their feelings towards the other. You can't help but feel sorry for Ollie because you can see the writing on the wall with his and Demmy's short-lived relationship. Great second book to a wonderful series and I can't wait to read more Demmy and Cody adventures. Hopefully both men wake up and smell the coffee soon about their bromance ;)

This is the second book I've read in this series. After the first book, I gave it 4 stars for the lack of romance/heat, because that's a major factor I'm looking for in an MM book...! I would have given it 3 stars but enjoyed it a lot otherwise and decided to see how it played out.
I'm still sticking with 4 stars. There still isn't a lot of romance/heat, just a bit that really isn't integral. There is still potential for the hints regarding both MCs to play out in the future. So between that and the fact that this really was a fun and interesting series with continued great characters and dialogue, I'll stay at 4 instead of going down to 3.
The great thing about both books is just that they are fun paranormals. Not angsty...a little danger, but not unnecessary drama. I like the characters and the back-and-forth, and the MCs friendship which I hope to see develop further.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series even if it's not as heavy on romance and heat as I prefer. I'm going to look at it as a PNR series for now and see if the other aspects pick up. I do hope so but am still enjoying it, just differently than I expected.

This is the second book in The Critter Catchers Series. An interesting book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters fascinating. The characters were developed and thought out. Cody and Demetrius are the MC’s of this book. The author needs to organize their writing so that they add some detail in places and be clearer on an event, subject or person. There is a way to write vague to leave questions or mystery in a story especially when it’s a series. But this book doesn’t hit the mark in the aspect it is just confusing. Some events feel unfinished or forgotten about and others feel like an afterthought. I don’t mind whether a book has sex or not, but it needs to have purpose in the story if it’s there. The sex in this book was unnecessary and didn’t improve or add to the storyline. Having said this, I did enjoy this book and I can recommend it a good read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Lifelong friends Cody Bower and Demetrius Singleton are still eking out a living with their animal control business but money is tight. They are called to a farm where some large animal seems to be attacking the goats and the are drawn into a genetic sci-fi nightmare. Meanwhile, Demmy’s relationship with local journalist Oliver is on the rocks. It doesn’t help that Cody, who is ostensibly straight, criticises Oliver to Demmy and rubs Oliver up the wrong way. It also doesn’t help that Demmy has secret fantasies about Cody.

I enjoyed this more than the first book, especially the relationship stuff. Considering the creepy supernatural / sci-fi themes, I’m pretty surprised I’m not at all scared by the action. There’s a real lightness to the tone and the way the action is written—I think the author could stretch out the action scenes and beef up the peril more. That said, these are easy, enjoyable books and I’ve got no desire to stop reading them. 🎧 I’ve adjusted to Zachary Zaba’s breezy style again and now that I’m in the zone, I’m enjoying his audio narration a lot.

The Critter Catchers business is not doing well. Demetrius and Cody haven’t had many clients and they are in serious debt. When they are asked to investigate a creature that is killing goats by exsanguination they take the case. The case is definitely odd and has them facing off against a possible chupacabra. Demetrius and Cody make great friends. Demetrius’ quiet demeaner is the perfect foil for Cody’s flirtatious antics. Demitrius is in a fairly stable relationship with reporter Oliver, and this has Cody a bit rattled. He is unsure of his feelings for Demetrius, and this causes him to behave unusually at times. I can’t wait to see how Demetrius and Cody’s relationship changes as the series progresses. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy with a dose of humor.

I listened to the audiobook. Narrator Zachary Zaba gives a good performance. I recommend this version of the book.

A solid second instalment to the Critter Catchers series, this book managed to keep the lighthearted, yet fast-paced and fairly suspenseful tone that the first captured. The banter between the MCs and the side-characters is excellent, especially Cody who is so blindingly jealous of Oliver (Demmy's boyfriend). The slow-burn from the first book continues here and, while Cody and Demmy are slowly working out a little more of what is happening between them, mostly they're still just confused and have seemingly entered the 'ignoring it' stage. I love the chemistry between them and for that alone, I would continue on with the series. On top of that though, the mystery was intriguing and well-executed, if not a tad convenient plot wise in certain spots. I'm excited to see what the next critter they face will be!

Chasing the Chupacabra is the second book in the Critter Catchers series by Hank Edwards. This book is a mix of hilarious scenes and suspense... highly entertaining and enjoyable read.

Demetrius and Cody are back in action and they are going through a rough patch in their business... like real rough. So they have to take on any jobs offered. Their newest job ends in a chase down of a mysterious creature... these guys just seem to attract the paranormal cases in this town. Luckily it makes dor some reading fun!

I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

Things have progressed for Demmy and Cody since their last case.
Demny is struggling with keeping the business afloat and trying to maintain his relationship with Ollie.
Cody is suddenly thinking about Demmy in a new light and dealing with unexpected jealousy.
They've stumbled into another case, this time involving goats.
There's more laughter at the ridiculous situations they find themselves in and a wonderful mystery to solve that kept me turning the pages.
The slow-burn between Demmy and Cody is absolutely delicious and I can't wait to continue getting to know these characters and see where their story leads to.

Still enjoying the adventures of the two friends who seems to have a knack to attract supernatural creatures... After the werewolfe.... sorry, the wolfman! from last book, they were now hire to chase the mythical chupacabras.

Still liking Demetrius a lot more than Cody (sorry, I have no fondness for womanizers), and I'm happy to see him with a boyfriend. Although he seems to have some doubts about the relationship :/

The real low point, at least in the two stories I've listen is the narration. It's to monotone, almost no inflection at all. I hope it will get better with the next books, because I'm enjoying them and I'll be listening to the whole series.
