Thanks to a flamboyant, small-town gossip blogger, Ivy Turner’s lily-white reputation has just been unceremoniously muddied. Rumor has it Ivy has succumbed to temptation and slept with one of the Deathridge brothers. Sources can’t confirm which of the four, sexy cowboys she’s taken up with, but everyone in town is weighing in.
Ivy would gladly step forward and defend her good name, except that the rumor happens to be true. Perplexed that her little indiscretion has somehow made it into the public eye, Ivy sets out to find the rumor’s source. In the process, she becomes the unwitting keeper of all the Deathridge brothers’ rather formidable secrets.
Now, not only does she have to keep taking hits to her reputation to protect the brothers, but all these secrets and lies are keeping her from exploring her burgeoning feelings for one of them. But if Jake, Cody, Dallas, and Boone think that Ivy’s patience is limitless, they’re in for a shock. Because when Ivy breaks, she’s taking everyone down with her.
Ivy Turner's managed to lead a drama free life up until now. She left her small ranching town in Oklahoma for college life and an eventual M.B.A. Now back in town to help run her family's ranch, her life's suddenly turned upside down with one tawdry post on a popular town gossip blog.
…Obviously, there’s something behind this rumor, and my feeling is that Ivy is most definitely guilty of sleeping with at least one of the brothers. And oh my, that certainly was a large box of…protection. Looks like whichever brother it was is likely to be seeing lots more of Ivy Turner.
Which of the Deathridge brothers is Ivy burning up the sheets with? Doesn't really matter because each one of the brothers has his own secret and by the end of the week, Ivy plays a supporting role in all on them.
It should probably be said that this is in no way a typical romance, but more a commentary on small town life and how suffocating it can be to live within the narrow constraints often imposed on us. Because of their controlling and judgmental father, none of the brothers feel free to love who they want or pursue dreams outside of their ranch. Choices made have a domino effect and all of the characters are somehow effected.
This book isn't for everyone. As I mentioned earlier, the romance is secondary. The story's told from a third person POV and virtually every character has a turn. That's a whole lot of back and forth with very little chance to actually get to know any of them.
In my opinion, this book works better as a social commentary on acceptance and tolerance, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just don't expect a sweeping romantic tale.

If the Fair Grove, Oklahoma rumor mill is to be believed, Ivy Turner is a bit of a floozy. I mean, one woman caught red-handed with four different cowboys? Brothers, no less. If that's not a small town scandal, I don't know what is!
Ivy, of course, knows that the rumors are unfounded. However, she's unable to defend herself because she's somehow found herself the keeper of secrets for all of the Deathridge brothers. To set things straight would mean to betray their trust, and that's just something Ivy can't do. One way or another she's determined to get to the bottom of it—and to free herself from the clutches of those rascally brothers once and for all.
It Took a Rumor had a little bit of everything; sizzling chemistry, romance, mystery, scandal, and that's not even counting the scorching hot relationship Ivy finds herself involved in. It's a big story full of small-town charm (and the not-so-charming realities of small town living).
I loved Ivy, with her great big heart and take-no-shit personality. She's feisty and strong but also open and kind. I loved how she refused to settle for less than what she deserved, and how she wasn't afraid to go toe to toe with a bully, or a lover, or anyone else who got in her way.
This whole thing was just fun! A little campy and sometimes outrageous—but balanced by some seriously heartfelt and emotional moments, and a whole cast of motley characters that I loved, and hated, and loved to hate. This is the perfect light and entertaining summer read! ~ Shelly, 4 stars

Never having read a book by Carter Ashby I wasn't sure what I was in for. I can't say I was disappointed. The writing was great and the storyline flowed easily enough. It is written in many POVs so that did take some getting use to. In order to truly grasp the storyline I felt they were necessary though. I enjoyed getting inside each characters head. It gave me a better understanding of the type of person they were. Let's just do a quick rundown of the characters. Ivy. She's the princess of the Turner Ranch. She's loyal. She's trustworthy. She just wants romance. Jake. He's a hard headed rancher. He's stubborn. He's the oldest sibling so most falls on his shoulders. He loves his brothers. But in some ways he's also weak. Boone. He's the sweet one. The charmer. The wolf in sheep's clothing. He gives no thought to the consequences of his actions. Molly. Ivy's best friend. She's self centered and self absorbed. She is vindictive, rude and vicious. I didn't care to much for her. Dallas. He's stuck. He loves his brothers but hates his life. He's scared of his father. He wants out but goes about it in a way that has tragic consequences. Cody. In a way he's my favorite. He's the one with the biggest secret. But also the biggest burden. Clara and Gideon. I'm putting these two together because there isn't much to say. These are the patriarchs of the Deathridge family. Gideon is probably my most hated character. He's heavy handed. He's mean. He's vicious. He's hateful. To put it eloquently, he's an ass. Clara was a weak person. She let's everyone, including her boys, walk all over her. She has no voice. Not for herself anyways. Jared. Ivy's dad. I love how he supports her. He doesn't question her. He just loves her. I also love how he treats the Deathridge boys as he would his own. He supports them.
On to the story. I loved the story. It has a 'who done it' feel to me. The mystery. The intrigue. The romance. Although that's secondary here. I stayed glued to the pages because I NEEDED to know what happened next. From one page to the next, you're left on the edge of your seat. Carter Ashby takes you on a ride from one emotion to the next. I swooned. I ranted. I was heartbroken. I was plain old mad. But then, towards the end, I was proud. I was proud of every character in this book and how they grew by the end. How they learned to stand up for themselves and each other. How they learned to accept consequences for their actions. It also shows just how stiffling living in a small town can be. How easily you can be judged for something without knowing the truth. For me I found some good advice reading this book. Always remember to stand up for yourself. No matter who its against. Always love yourself and be proud of who you are. Always remember there is consequences for certain actions. Gossip is never nice. It can be hurtful. But most of all. Secrets can be a burden and can hurt people. They also ALWAYS have a way of coming out. Whether it's by an old busy body blogger or by the person you trusted with them when it all becomes to much.

3.5
An astonishing example of a tyrant of a father forced this rumor to take place. If you are THAT interested in someone you shouldn't lie about doin the nasty with her. Ok I would hope he'd be proud enough to say something but when faced with his choices realistically I understand the lie, but I want a man's man for a H.
With all of the scandals going on around the small farming town, somehow it’s Ivy’s fling that made it into the public rumor mill. Word on the local gossips vlog is that Ivy is sleeping with one of the Deathridge brothers, her lifelong neighbors and sons to the most terrifying, stubborn man in town. But Ivy can’t deny the rumor – because it’s true. However, she’s hiding secrets for all of the brothers, and to tell the truth would mean exposing secrets that aren’t hers to reveal.
I can not get over how much I loved this book! It is funny and sweet and infuriating and funny and steamy and insightful. And did I mention that it is funny? I caught myself laughing out loud so many times, I think people sitting near me on public transportation must have thought I was insane. The romance scenes are steamy yet tasteful, and the characters are so much fun to follow. They all have their issues, which just proves that it is so much more enjoyable to read about people who are less-than-perfect and still cheer them on in spite of their faults.
Any romance lovers out there, or anyone who just likes a good laugh, should pick up this book immediately. Don’t let the cowboy angle fool you. Even us city girls can enjoy this one!
A murder, a mystery, an abusive dick, a dozen or so secrets and one nosy lady..
Yeah this book was okay but like everything and the bathroom sink was in this novel. It was just way too much for me to follow to actually enjoy it. Heck, there was 10-15 different characters and they were all intertwined.
So too much distraction for me to be completely happy with this novel, as is, it's 2 star book.
A Not-Quite Review for It Took a Rumor by Carter Ashby
{RANT} Normally, when I read a book for review, I put on this imaginary “reviewer’s hat.” I keep an eye out for everything from poor editing and plot holes to f-bombs and more. I then take those notes and try to calculate to whom- both within my circle and on the internet- I’d recommend a given work. Essentially, when reading an ARC or another piece, knowing I will be writing a review, there’s a completely different mindset involved.
When I first started reading It Took a Rumor, I was locked and loaded- figurative red pen ready and waving. By the end of the first chapter, I was so engaged in the story, I pretty much forgot that this novel wasn’t from my “when you get time” lists and somehow completely lost that reviewer’s hat in the process. Highlighted in my Kindle were only a handful of editing/typographical errors, no notes on foul language whatsoever (even though there was plenty), and not a single “Nikki’s notation” of other issues with the novel. Basically, I truly enjoyed being so immersed in the book, I forgot to say anything.
Thinking of anything I would say about the book beyond “Sequels, please!?!” there’s really only two warnings that come to mind. 1. There is a lot of swearing- well beyond my “sure, I’ll read it aloud to you, Grandma” threshold. 2. If that didn’t stop you, this second point might. The book is not erotica by any means, but there are graphic sexual scenes- including male on male action. Some parts just felt a little too… invasive?… intimate?... for certain readers (though it made for a rather hilarious coitus interruptus moment in one scene). Your mileage may vary- but I can honestly say I won’t be adding it to a church book club list. {/RANT}
There’s a rumor going around that Ivy Turner slept with one of her neighbors. Unfortunately, there’s four brothers on the Deathridge farm, and try as they might, the tiny town of Fair Grove just can’t figure out which one. Boone, Cody, Dallas, and Jake each have secrets they don’t want revealed; but poor Ivy keeps finding herself bound in confidences (some with major consequences) with each of the lot. Town gossip monger Myra Tidwell won’t rest until she digs up the dirt. Who did Ivy sleep with? What other skeletons will come to light in It Took a Rumor by Carter Ashby?
I received a copy of It Took a Rumor by Carter Ashby from Create Space via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I really wasn’t kidding before, I want to hear more from this amazing cast of characters- SEQUELS, PLEASE!
It didn’t much matter what he wore, his baby face held all the allure of a piece of candy from a stranger in a creepy van.
She’d set herself apart by choosing career over family, as if one couldn’t have both, and was therefore outside their sphere of interest.
“First, we see that woman was created from man. That she was made equal to man, but for the purpose of supporting him.” Ivy sank into herself a little. It was so conflicting, hearing those words, because she disagreed with them.
“I can acknowledge that a guy’s good looking or in good shape or whatever, but it’s never turned me on.” “If you say so.” “Stop trying to make me question my sexuality.” “Why shouldn’t you? Why shouldn’t we all? Maybe we wouldn’t have so many problems if we didn’t draw so many hard lines about it.”
5 Stars
Oh man, did I love this book. The romance aspect was soooo different than the ones I usually read.
Ivy is a career minded, independent woman with a very formal way about her. Not at all what I would have expected of someone raised on a ranch. I loved the fact that even though her reputation was being tarnished she didn’t defend herself. Opting for keeping the secrets and helping the very ones who were supposedly her enemies. Hmmm, there’s a lesson in there somewhere. It really showed a deeper level of selflessness that I found admirable in her character. But, her kindness was not weakness and let me tell you when she finally said enough is enough, ::shakes head:: she gave them what for! It was wonderful to see her lose control after everything she went through!
The gossiping old lady was at times the perfect comedic relief but other times I just wanted to slap her old face because she as such a liar.
Ivy had such a great support system in her corner, a fact which I really loved. Her father was very understanding and open to other people’s point of view. You could tell where Ivy got her understanding from. And even though his part was not that large, he stands out in my mind after reading the book.
The brothers mother’s story was bittersweet for me. I felt very sad for her in some ways but her strong backbone shown through in the end. And the brothers! Oh my, they were almost more trouble than they were worth. Always getting into some kind of mischief, with Ivy smack dab in the middle of it all. It was like a well rehearsed satire in its unpredictability and humor. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Ivy has grown up in the small town of Fair Grove, Ok. After coming home from college and live life on the straight an narrow she is now faced with being the brunt of gossip by an old biddy who has nothing better to do then what seems like ruin her life or at least her reputation. She seems to be the keeper of all the secrets and she is starting to get to her breaking point will she be able to keep everyones secrets and protect those close to her or will she loose it and loose it all? Jake being the oldest in the family has the world on his shoulders, he loves his parents and his brothers but this rumor about him and his brothers and Ivy has gotten out of hand. Little does he know that everyone of his brothers has secrets and it seems Ivy knows something and she and her dad are out for their family land and he is about to have none of it. Will he be able to get to the bottom of it or will they loose it all? This book was pretty good with Ivy and Jake being the main characters in the book it had views of quite a few of the other characters in the book but it flowed well and wasn't hard to keep up. I have two words for this book "hot Mess", but not because its bad but because of all the drama with the characters it really does some up what a small town is or at least the small town I grew up in. It was a fun book to read and keeps you drawn into the storyline without loosing interest at all. I had a hard time putting the book down to get anything done. I love Ivy and her take charge no ones going to stop me attitude her and Claire really added a different aspect to the story where they were not a weak female looking to be rescued. If your looking for a fun book with lots of fun drama and keeps you guessing in a fun way, this book is for you for sure.
Disclosure: I received this book free of charge from the publisher, but this review consists of my honest opinions, not influenced in any way by the author or publisher
"...it was hardly an affair. They'd had one momentary lapse in judgment. One illicit moment."
This novel initially comes across as a sweet, small town romance but I was surprised to find that it was far from it!
Ivy Turner has been running her father’s ranching business since her mother passed away. She’s college-educated and came back from the big city with more polish than the farmgirl who left. Every year, they make an offer to neighbouring rancher, Gideon Deathridge, to buy their property but, for some reason, Gideon has an inexplicable hatred for Ivy's dad, Jared, since forever.
Myra Tidwell is the town gossip, scandalmonger and blogger. If she can’t dig up the truth, she’s happy to make it up. Apparently, Ivy is sleeping with one of the four Deathridge sons, but who? Jake, Cody, Dallas or Boone?
And thus begins the funny, angsty, sexy escapades as, somehow, Ivy finds herself the keeper of the Deathridge brothers' secrets, including her own involvement with one of them. The town is a veritable hotbed of scandal!! The goings-on!
It’s such a fab read as we follow Ivy and the Deathridge brothers dealing with their issues and their relationship with the bigoted, mean Gideon, as well as managing the town gossip.
This was my first experience of this author and I’ll definitely be reading more of her books. I found her style sweetly charming but, at the same time, thoroughly modern. I can’t really describe it adequately – you just need to read this book to realise what I mean!
Ivy Turner has returned home after getting her business degree in college, to help her widowed father run their ranch. For years, they have attempted to buy a portion of the neighboring ranch from the Deathridges, but the patriarch refuses to sell. And seems to hate them.
Soon, Ivy is the object of the attention of everyone in town as small town gossip Myra - who has a website with video blog no less - announces to everyone that Ivy is sleeping with one of the four Deathridge brothers...but which is it?
While dealing with the gossip, Ivy quickly becomes the confidant of all four of the brothers, holding secrets for each one of them...while falling in love with one.
This was a great, fun read. Being from a small town, I can see everything happening as it does in this book - the gossip, everyone wanting "details", keeping secrets, plus the domineering father of the Deathridge men who has kept them so in check, that even as adults they all still live either with or close to their parents. The author does a wonderful job of depicting all of this, as well as the emotions of all the characters as they each deal with their own personal secret. Further, the way each man deals with everything as it comes to light is written in a wonderfully satisfying way.
Another great read from Carter Ashby! While it is set in a small town with a country type setting, I don't know anyone who wouldn't enjoy this great book.
I found this novel was quite different from what I usually read, in the respect that it's not an out and out romance or a thriller, it's more like a game of Chinese whispers with more to uncover than anyone could realise. It has a bit of everything, it's got secrets, lies, mystery, humour, heartbreak and of course, a little bit of forbidden romance....
Ivy Turner is the current victim of her small town's gossip mill. The question on everyone's mind is which of the Deathridge brothers is she sleeping with. Ivy quickly gets fed up of the gossip, even if it is true, and starts to dig into this thing herself. She wants to know who started the rumor and why. Upon starting her own investigations she stumbles across all of the Deathridge boy's secrets, some more innocent than others of course, all the while trying to keep her own secret.
Being written in the third person works for this book as there is so much back and forth between all of the characters, it would be harder to keep track if it was written any other way. On the other hand though, half the town is in this book so that for me caused some complications with knowing who was talking about what.
I struggled to write this review because of how much was going on in this book, my thoughts feel a bit scattered after reading it. However I will say I'd be open to reading more from this author.
copy received for honest review I thought this was going to be a light fun read. This book was both light and then it had some heavy things happening, It deals with gossip, infidelity, murder, and a whole lot of other things in a small town. Anyone who has any experience with dealing with small time life can relate. Ivy Turner's life was turned upside down when her life became fodder for a gossip blog. In know time at all Ivy has 3 secrets in addition to her own to protect. I loved Ivy, she was smart, sassy and stood up for herself. She was also too nice and tried to protect those she cared about. I loved that she did not the Deathridge boys get away with much. It is pretty easy to figure out which Deathridge is her lover. She tells him what she wants and lets him know that he needs to step up his game or they would not be together. I love how strong she was. She made the story fun to read. I will say the Deathridge boys were a little annoying. they were grown men acting like children. their dad had them under his thumb and a little brainwashed. their mom was not much better. It took Ivy to get them moving. some of the scenes and dialogue were funny. I have read other books by this author and liked them. This does not disappoint.
Wow, wow, wow!! Ivy Turner and one of the Deathridge brothers. Which one was it? Between Jake, Dallas, Cody and Boone many secrets are revealed to our little Ivy, but how many secrets can she keep and not crack? I loved this book. A first read by this author but definitely not my last. It was full of everything you could want; mystery, forbidden love, laughs and heartbreaking moments. I loved getting into all the brothers heads and not finding out the answer to our question but gaining more right off the bat. I loved that it kept me guessing but I picked right from the get go!! Would love to see more about these brothers and how life is for them now and of course I want to hear more about Clara!!!
What a funny story! Ivy Turner is the center of small town gossip and she hasn't even done it. Jake Deathridge is one of four sons working on the ranch and under the iron thumb of their father. Myra the town gossip has been writing how Ivy is seen all over town with each one of the Deathridge boys at one point or another. The only one Ivy is messing around with is Jake but she ends up keeping secrets for all of them and her friend Molly until Molly ends up dead. All hell breaks loose after that and everyone is accused of being with Ivy and no one gets any answers. What a heartwarming story that really makes you smile with all the small town gossip you would expect. Reviewed on behalf of Once upon an Alpha
Cowboys behaving badly? I'd say the whole town had some behavior issues that made one of the most interesting reads I've had in awhile. Ivy is the perfect heroine. She is smart, cute, and goes to church while questioning what she is told. I loved her. She tries to be a good girl, in spite of what the town's rumor mill says. But, when the rumor mill is upstaged by murder, we find out Ivy is also a strong woman.
The book explores her relationships with the town and her family. I was intrigued by the way she handled herself with them all. She does find love or is it, love finds her. Read It Took a Rumor and decide for yourself.
It's killing me to see all these 4 stars like did we even read the same book people!?!?!? This book has everything in it mystery, lies, secrets, romance, heart break, death!!!! Come on people what more do you guys want. I love Ivy she's strong willed, passionate, and driven. With all of her outstanding qualities she is also stubborn and hotheaded. With rumors flying all around her dosent help matters much either. But among all of that she's a great friend who tires to juggle everyone secrets only to get more rumors and lies thrown her way till it pushes poor Ivy over the edge
I absolutely loved this book about the small town rumor mill. The characters are so likable and genuine. The plot has many twists and turn, as we try to figure out which Deathridge brother Ivy Turner has her hooks in. Hilarious at times, this story deals with real issues like adultery and realizing ones sexual.orientation. This is my first book by this author and I can't wait to read more. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Awesome story! Poor Ivy! Keeping so many of the Deathridge boys secrets! This book has it all! It has secrets and lies and murder and romance and steam and so many twists! I could not turn the pages fast enough! Highly recommend!
cowboys and drama! I loved this book! so much drama for one family, but I absolutely loved that everything resolved in one way or another by the end of the book. first book by Carter Ashby but definitely not my last!
Funny, light-hearted, and quite entertaining. Fairly well edited.
Ivy Turner is a really nice girl in a small ranching town. She's grown up in town, gone off to college, and come back to help run her family ranch. Their land sandwiches the Deathridge family spread. Old man Deathridge won't let the Turner's cattle cross his land to get from one parcel to the other, so every year or so, the Turners offer to buy the Deathridge land. And every year or so, Gideon Deathridge turns the offer down. Shortly after Ivy meets the oldest Deathridge son, Jake, with the latest offer, the rumor mill starts turning. Someone says that Ivy is stepping out with one of the Deathridge boys. Now, there are four Deathridge sons - Jake, Dallas, Cody, and Boone. No one seems real sure which of the brothers she's been out with. They all deny it. Gideon won't have it anyway. Each of the sons has his own secret, and Ivy ends up privy to them all. The burden of keeping so many secrets starts to take it's toll as the brother Ivy is actually seeing begins to wonder if she the rumors might not mean him. Will Ivy ever get her guy to step away from his father's control long enough to have a relationship? Will Ivy be able to keep all the secrets, or will she blow a gasket from the pressure?
So many different threads - each of the brothers has his own issue, as well as the intertwined issues of their family life. And, while several threads were tied up well, there were a couple that I felt were just cut or a little frayed. Overall, this was a good afternoon read with humor, and wit, and a HEA. Enjoy.
This book took me by surprise. I didn't expect to get lost and love it as much as I did. It twisted and turned and I couldn't put it down. Plus cowboys and spice.... I highly recommend it!
