Wounded and alone, Jathen desperately tries to make his way back home to the Tazu Nation. His path is treacherous, as he is pursued by the traitorous Mikkal and the mysterious Sister. However, a Grand Artifact has chosen him as its guardian, and it may have other plans for the wayward moot. Jathen’s Big Journey isn’t turning out at all the way he expected. After suffering huge losses in Book 1, he just wants to fulfill Ass’shiri’s last request and go home to lick his wounds. But the Grand Artifact that has adopted him has other plans and Jathen is dangerously adventure bound again, all while trying to keep his enemies from finding him.
I cannot get over how rich and developed this world is! It’s been awhile since I read book 1 so I thought I’d have a hard time diving into the complexities of book 2, but nope. I fell right into Jathen’s story and didn’t want to put it down. I love how Jathen can think on his feet and how he doesn’t know what’s going on any more than I do. He has powers that can’t be explained even though he’s been told his whole life that he’s pretty much unextraordinary. The one thing that is jarring is when Jathen is abruptly pulled from his friends in the sky city. By the end of the book we don’t really have any details about what happened to them. I’m guessing they’ll be a part of book 3. Or I hope so anyway. Also, the sky city kinda boggles my mind. I don't really get how they pull that off, but that's ok. Anyway, with the big bang finish at the end I’m seriously looking forward to book 3 and learning more about Jathen and his unusual powers. I’m thinking there’s going to be some more surprises in store.
My levels of excitement for this book were off the scale. It is perhaps the most enthusiastic I’ve been about a new book for a long time, although I was concerned about my emotional state after Way Walkers: Tangled Paths broke my heart several times! Luckily, this one made me laugh just as much but it reduced me to tears only the once. I can recommend it with a clear conscience that you won’t be an emotional mess afterwards.
The tension and pacing in this book was as strong as the first, but the plot wasn’t as complicated. Not having to be introduced to the world and the characters drove the plot forward a lot faster, but that was only to be expected from the second in a series. But rather than several plot lines twisting together simultaneously, there were two clear sections: Jathen in the city of Dodbyen and all that it entailed and then his adventures back on the ground.
The new characters were engaging in their own right. While no one can ever replace Ass’shiri in my mind, Izzy was a worthwhile companion who could deal with Jathen – both his brooding and his moments of wit. Her loyalty and determination made her an extremely approachable character. Marcasith also created a lot of empathy – he provided the father-figure and believer that Jathen so desperately needs. He did, however, have a depth and past to his character that made the reader like him for him rather than just what he offered Jathen. One final character worth mentioning is Seren – talk about character development! Let’s just say I can’t wait to see what she does next!
When you’re trying to turn the page quicker than possible, you know you have a book that has captured your heart and imagination. It has all the elements you can want from a good fantasy novel! When the final line (not including the epilogue) opens up a whole barrage of new questions about Jathen, you know it’s going to feel like a long wait until the next book!
This is the last book I read in 2024. Although I didn’t like the first book in the series, however, I enjoyed this one up until Jathan managed to teleport to his home city. Fron there on, all the excitement and anticipation faded out for me because I really was waiting for the result. Jathan lack of interest afterward disappointed as I assumed he would do whatever to see to it they landed with him. I don’t know at this point what to expect, Jathan character is one of those protagonist I dislike, but I still enjoyed the book and will continue to book 3.
Very interesting, imaginative world- that takes place 6 or so thousand years after the destruction of earth as we know it. Complete with different "races (ppl who turn into dragons, sophisticated vampires, humans, magical creatures, etc).
Some profanity. Implied sex.
This 2nd of 4 books comes to a restful ending w all major questions answered. I'm looking forward to the 3rd book.
Pretty solid update, the highlight being the sky city. Sadly it was a little abrubt when the mc was separated from his friends. Overall still very cool and will be looking forward to more.
Loved this book! This is a continuation of Jathen's coming of age, and we get some real development in his character. He, and we, discover more about him. Whereas the first book gave him, and us, some pretty serious losses, this book offers more hope, and less loss. I admit to a bit of trepidation to reading Book 3 when it becomes available – I don't want more loss like we had in Book 1, and managed to skip in Book 2.
The author has developed a marvelous universe. It has the same depth and diversity found in Tolkien's books, but these books are NOT a re-telling of Tolkien's stories!
Jathen matures somewhat in this book. He begins to think, and act, more like the ruler he is destined to become, should he choose that Path. My biggest complaint about this book is I finished it, and Book 3 is not yet available!
I don't give out many 5 stars. Five is reserved for the ones that will change me in some way, or make what is sure to be a lasting impression. But this book just grabbed me, and compelled me to come along for the ride as Jathen takes some control of his life and handle the circumstances he's literally thrown into. And isn't that what a book is supposed to do?
Turns out I won't be the one to spoil the 5 star rating of this book after all.
Excellent sequel. We learn more about some of the more mysterious characters, and Jathen (the narrator) becomes steadily more capable even as he realizes just how little he knows about the world and about his own family. Fast paced and exciting.
I want more. The author better hurry up and finish this baby. I was captivated by the main character. Stupid, but not too stupid. Caring but not too caring. Powerful but not too powerful. Some nice twists in the story.
