‘Song for a Viking’ takes place during/just after the events of the last chapter of Think of England and will be of no use at all to anyone who hasn’t read that book. It is not a standalone.
You will definitely get the most out of it if you remind yourself of Think of England’s last chapter before reading.
3 1/2 Stars - Just a few pages but a long-awaited reunion
Book #1.5
At last!! I really liked, or actually loved, Think of England (4 1/2 stars) and it was great to meet these characters Daniel da Silva and Archie Curtis once again. (Still crossing my fingers for a full length sequel novel.)
I just noticed that this short has its own goodreads page, so I can review it too, amazing :-))
I finally got what I was desperately wishing for in Think of England: Daniel's POV.
It's actually an extension of the last scene in the book, told from Daniel da Silva's perspective. We know he's pushing Archie away to protect him, but Archie isn't a child to be coddled. He may not be a poet like Daniel, but he knows what he wants in life nonetheless.
And what he wants is Daniel.
A beautiful closing scene on a powerful Victorian romance (which also worked pretty well as a mystery novel for me, just saying.)
I love an author with shorty freebie extras. Charles always delivers.
This little follow-up to the final pages, both just before and just after, was delicious. Being in Daniel's head, even briefly, was lovely and this was both stirring and smokin' and sweet.
This coda is entwined with, and an extension of, the final scene from Think of England. Told from Daniel's POV rather than Archie's, it's delightful and clever, in true KJC style, and is available to read for free here: http://kjcharleswriter.com/wp-content....
I love how the cover for this is just a chaise longue... appropriate lolol
What I'd like like to know is why there aren't more England books?? KJC could have written a whole series of gay spy shenanigans with these two!! We were robbed, I say, robbed!! (And yes I know she gave us the Will Darling books but this is pre-war/pulp/Edwardian gay spy shenanigans territory!! ugh)
Anyway, am I making my way through a bunch of KJC's short freebies bcs I noticed I was near 100 books this year and wanted to scam my own reading challenge so the end number would be pretty? Yes, yes I am.
Love this little re-visit to Daniel and Archie of 'Think of England' you'd need to read the book first to have any context. Not sure how I've managed to miss it's existence for so long.
Nice to see Daniel's pov and it was how I imagined him, the attempt to be aloof while his heart led him astray. And honest earnest Archie.
Lots of personality, wondering where the sequel will take us.
Just a little glimpse of Archie and Daniel, right at the end of Think of England - since there's not going to be a novel sequel, this is a very welcome moment of warmth and hope, to move them just a bit beyond the HFN of the book (with a bit of Daniel's POV) for closure.
I am so tempted to attach "viking" tag to these books, lol
What a thing of beauty: love the writing, love the setting, love the characters. Please, dear God of all things historical and gay (original meaning implies too, of course) let there be book two! Please, dear God, aka KJ Charles, let there be more Daniel and Archie on our bookshelves.
Many many thanks for all the pages we already have :)
This is a lovely little extra on the author's website. It's the final scene in Think of England extended and told from Daniel's POV. Just swoony and a warm hug for all the fans of these two great characters.
Nice little scene from Daniel's POV that bookends that last scene in Think of England. It was nice to see what Daniel was up to before that scene started, and how it continued after the book ended.
Awwww, I loved this quick little look at Archie and Daniel! <3 I still have to read Proper English but I sincerely hope that KJ Charles isn't done with these two, I love them together.
A short 12-page expansion of the end of K.J. Charles' simply wonderful "Think of England." More insight into Daniel and Archie. I would dearly love to have another book with Archie and Daniel!
It's been almost a year since I read Think of England, so my memory of it is at best a bit fuzzy, but Song for a Viking reminded me of the most important thing about it: I want Archie and Daniel's story to continue in future books.
This story takes place during and after the last chapter of Think of England, so before starting Song for a Viking it is best to go back to ToE, and reread the ending, just like KJ Charles recommended.
I can't remember if ToE had few or no chapters written in Daniel's POV. All I know is that I wished a bigger part of the book was written from Daniel's perspective, and this story is, so yay!
Daniel was battling with the Muse to find a way to put his feelings for Archie on paper, and was so cute doing it. Then there was that knock on the door, and then there were fun times on the chaise longue.
Think of England ended in such a way that left the door open for more books about Archie's and Daniel's work. I do hope one day we'll get to read them.
All in all, this was a nice treat for anyone who liked Think of England.
Short and fun and entertaining - and yes, the author's advice at the beginning was very good, as without re-reading the final chapter of the first book I would have been lost.
This was a lovely little short that gives both sides of the final reconciliation between our two heroes. I liked getting to see both sides of this story. So sweet.
Hm, I thought I had already read this, obviously not. Loved it though, a tiny little add-on to the end of Think of England from Daniel's POV. All the stars.
