The intense match with Aoba Johsai continues, but Karasuno is on the ropes when Kageyama is pulled from the game and subbed with Sugawara. This volume follows them as they try to turn things around.

This volume let’s Sugawara shine and it’s lovely. This is one of my favourite ensemble casts that I’ve ever read in a manga and I love how Furudate gives (almost) every character a chance to take the spotlight. Furudate takes these opportunities to develop the characters both in the spotlight and out -- Kageyama learns a thing or two from watching Sugawara’s approach and style and you see him become a better athlete because of it.

The plot itself is pretty thin, but that’s to be expected from a sports manga that jumps from one game to the next. This is all about the characters and the emotional investment we have in them, which this series carries in spades (imo). The game chronicled in this volume is especially nerve-wracking which ratchets up the tension.

I’ve watched this anime all the way through twice, so I can visualize a lot of the scenes in my mind, but I’m curious how readers who haven’t watched the anime adaptation follow the action. I do think it looks pretty good though, especially for a sport that involves as much movement and dynamism as volleyball. I also enjoyed how between chapters, Furudate would show readers panels or pages where he actually made mistakes about character placements. It really made me appreciate how difficult it must be to illustrate a work like this!

This is such a fun series and even though I know everything that’s going to happen, I still find myself enjoying revisiting this story and this cast. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys sports manga.

The cliffhanger at the end of vol 6 was so dramatic that I launched right into vol 7! This whole book is taken up by a set of games of Karasuno versus Blue Castle, one of the most exciting rivalries that we've had so far. But the core of the story watching the Karasuno players level up their emotional intelligence and communication skills. Watching Kageyama try to smile stuck icy fear into my heart, but watching him high five and compliment his teammates melted it again. Can't wait to read more!

This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga

”You don’t win alone.
That’s just how it is.”

READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered
READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5

*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*

I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.

It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.

When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.

description

PLOT: ★★★★★
The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.

ART STYLE: ★★★★★
The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.

description

CHARACTERS: ★★★★★
The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.

The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.

This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.

*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++

Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE

description
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^

THEMES: ★★★★★
Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper.

I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++

The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.

description

PACING: ★★★★★
THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.

It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)

description

PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★

You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)

I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.

I forgot about those requests, but oh well. I think the library could feel a collective desire for more Haikyuu, so they're starting to catch up with the series. This is awesome, because I get to revisit all of the moments that made me smile in this series' original format.

God, I love Koushi Sugawara. I also love this current game against Aoba Josai. Everything's tense and everyone's on high alert, and that's great, but I still want to appreciate just how much Koushi Sugawara is a babe. He's really sweet and really smart and I really like how he strategizes. We don't deserve him; he's too pure of a mom.

The first season's material wraps up next volume, which I will of course read next because I am #trash. I love everything this series offers and I'm always ready for more. Volume 8 is going to wreck me because I know what happens next. I just know it.

Furudate-sensei never ceases to amaze.

First and foremost, I must address an issue of utmost importance: Sugawara-san. He is, quite frankly, the epitome of adorable, an embodiment of all the crushes I ever harbored in high school. Handsome, intelligent, caring, and kind—he’s the full package. I find myself utterly at a loss for words, reduced to a mere puddle of admiration. <3

Now, onto the actual review—this volume proved to be an engrossing and captivating chapter in the saga of character development, a veritable ode to evolution. The growth unfolding before the reader’s very eyes is nothing short of mesmerizing. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Kageyama’s newfound willingness to listen to his teammates and adapt to their needs on the court.

Much of this fresh-faced Kageyama draws inspiration from Sugawara’s masterful play during the current Karasuno-Aoba Johsai match. The way Sugawara effortlessly assesses the individual strengths and weaknesses of each teammate, absorbing even the most subtle details of their movements and actions, leaves a profound impression on Kageyama. Possibly, for the first time, he begins to question his own methods, asking himself, Could I become better by learning from my senior? With this epiphany, Kageyama seizes the opportunity, using it as a springboard for his evolution as a setter.

But the theme of evolution doesn’t end with Kageyama. Far from it! Beyond the obvious growth of the first-years—Hinata and Tsukishima in particular—the team as a whole seems to rise to an entirely new level. It’s as though they’re collectively shedding an old skin, emerging stronger, sharper, and more unified than ever before.

As always, the pacing of the story is masterfully executed. I felt the pulse-pounding thrill of the match coursing through me, gripping my very being. And just when the intensity threatens to overwhelm, Furudate-sensei cleverly introduces a flashback, offering a welcome breather. These glimpses into earlier times provide much-needed context while seamlessly maintaining the story’s flow.

As you can likely glean from my effusive praise, this volume evoked a kaleidoscope of emotions within me—excitement, joy, affection, and an endless supply of "aww"s, tempered by moments of frustration and spine-tingling chills as challenges arose.

I’m already scheming to devour the next few volumes this weekend. Oh, what joy! Truly, I’m head over heels for this marvelous series.

This manga just keeps getting better and better!

And pretty sure this is my favorite volume yet!

We get ALLLLL the Suga vibes in the beginning and absolutely loved it! Hinata will ALWAYS be my favorite character, but just when I think I know who my second favorite is, another awesome guy on Karasuno reminds me they are there and super amazing. This was definitely my moment to remember how much I love Suga! <3 He is absolutely amazing and loved his nickname "Mr. Pleasant." It makes me happy every time! LOL!

The growth in this volume alone concerning Kageyama was incredible! Wow wow wow! He really grew by leaps and bounds in this one! Makes me like Kageyama more, even though I can't believe he won in the popularity contest. Like whatttt?! #TeamHinataForever LOL!

I don't know how many times I fist pumped when reading this manga, but man, it is just as engaging as the anime is, if not more so at times! I feel I have such a new appreciation for everything and have come to really see how great both teams are. (I already knew how awesome Karasuno was though. LOL) This is such a fantastic match and really excited to keep reading, especially after that moment when Kageyama voices in his mind how he KNEW what play to do, but it was like Hinata almost ripped that set right out of his hands. SO GOOD!!

Lots of excellent moments in this manga and just highly recommend reading this series, not just watching the anime!

”Kageyama you once told Hinata that with you he was the greatest.”

“Well.. the same goes for you.”

“Together with Hinata you’re the greatest too.”

Holy shit this has to be the best volume so far..! The amount of character development we got from Kageyama in just one volume is insane. I love how Kageyama tries to be like Suga and communicates with Tsukishima even if they dont like each other much. (Also I did not know Kageyama could do a jump serve?? That was sick) We also see just how amazing Suga is in this volume. I honestly love him so much. 🥹 Im sure their gonna win. So glad we got to know more about Oikwawa as-well and his relationship with Iwaizumi is so adorable!!)

”On that last rally, for the first time ever he looked at the entire picture before making a decision…!”

“It had to be Mr. Pleasant over there.”

“What did he teach Tobio?”

You can be stronger because you have people with you at the court. Sugawara and Oikawa knows that full well. I'm so happy they have teammates who loves and trusts them just as much as they do too. This third years really have a way to make me feel sick to my stomach, I love them so much.

Moreover, Iwaizumi is the greatest reason why Oikawa can keep his head cool. No one will ever be able to encourage Oikawa and support him more fiercely than Iwaizumi. Iwa-chan seems to always get mad at Tooru but it's to always remind him of his worth. They have been together since elementary days, they are just the perfect soulmates, always perfectly in sync and understanding and trusting each other 100%. I will die on this hill.

another manga i'm glad i watched the anime first of! these games are LONG! if i hadn't seen them in action animated already before, i'd get antsy. but i've been a long time manga reader/lover/supremacist, so i'm enjoying myself.

also, oikawa is way less annoying in print.
