Saxton: The Hunt & Uneasy Allies

Rate this book
Wilford Saxton is a man abandoned by his life. Everything he knew and trusted ended in a collapsed heap of rubble that used to be a secret base. He watched his former partner become a god. Wilford's body has changed. He doesn't bleed, his wounds heal almost immediately, and his gun talks to him.
This collection includes two complete The Hunt and Uneasy Allies.
In The Hunt, Wilford finds himself in Cuba, New Mexico hunting Coco, the bogeyman of northern New Mexico. The last time Wilford met Coco things didn't go too well for Wilford. Now he walks into a bloodbath and wonders if someone may be controlling the bogeyman.
In Uneasy Allies a friend is killed and Wilford and his team are called to Albuquerque to figure out what happened. What they find will scare even the hunter, the bruja, and the seasoned cop.
This is part one of an ongoing series of novellas about Wilford Saxton and his mad quest for revenge.

Eric Lahti grew up looking for UFOs and buried treasure in northwest New Mexico. Unfortunately, he never found either of them. Or maybe he did and he's just not telling. He did find some good stories to tell at parties about lights in the skies and gold in the ground, though. When he's not writing, he's programming and practicing his Kenpo. He's also an active blogger, waxing philosophical about a range of topics from writing, to martial arts, to politics and religion. Frankly, he fancies himself something of a Renaissance geek about a wide variety of things. In addition to his current books, Better Than Dead is going to be published relatively soon-ish.

He also runs a blog at Eric Lahti

I met the character Wilford Saxton in Eric Lahti's previous novels, he was a great character and I was excited to learn he would be getting his own series. What makes Saxton such a fascinating character is his relationship with his gun, a living entity that thinks and communicates with Saxton. Instead of just getting the thoughts of the character, you hear the internal discussion between him and his magic gun. It makes you wonder who is controlling who. The pace is as explosive as the action, with violence, magic and intrigue thrown in for good measure. Don't be fooled by this being two short stories, you're getting a novel's worth of exciting action packed into a short book. This is a great start to the series and I can't wait for the next one.

Wilford Saxton gets his own stories, enemy and part time ally of the Henchmen in Lahti's previous novel. It was fascinating to see Lahti's world through Saxton's eyes, to notice the similarities and differences between he and former partner Stephen. The stories of his enhancements, the reasons for his actions, and even his compassion come through in these two stories. It was great to better understand his motivations, the stories are highly imaginative and, again, make you feel like you're in New Mexico (I still have a craving for a good breakfast burrito). I look forward to continuing with Saxton on his journey.

Eric Lahti eases the reader into this novella in a similar fashion to somebody lowering themselves into the passenger seat of a Ferrari - with a racing driver in the other seat.
When you read one of this author’s books you know what you’re getting into, which for me is part of the enjoyment. After a gentle, but brief confidence-building introduction to Wilford Saxton we are thrust into action which is spellbinding, both in pace and content.
The character intro’s are brief, well-rounded and clear. Without doubt a leading character is Wilford’s sidekick - his weapon. I hesitate to refer to it as a gun or sidearm, because it is much more. The weapon has no conscience, but it co-exists and communicates with the protagonist using Artificial Intelligence.
I’m not a ‘Ghostbusters’ fan, but the humorous aspects of ‘Men in Black’ appeal to me. Here, we have an author who has created a world loosely based on what we call reality. Eric Lahti’s characters inhabit a middle-ground where regular people and the forces of justice are juxtaposed in the fight against ... whatever. Before you climb into the passenger seat - take a breath.
