If you love the stepbrother romances of Sabrina Paige, Caitlin Daire, and Krista Lakes, you’ll fall hard for Laura Marie Altom’s tale of forbidden love—a red-hot novel in her Shamed series featuring two tortured souls with an unbreakable bond.
As the chief legal counsel for dot-com billionaire Liam Stone, Garrett Marsden has grown accustomed to being universally loathed. In fact, he welcomes it. Because the bigger the fight, the easier it is to run from his desire for someone he can never have: his stepsister. But when Garrett flies back to Julep, Mississippi, for Savannah’s med school graduation, a steamy encounter makes all his wildest dreams come true—and leads to his undoing. Because that’s when he meets Savannah’s boyfriend. . . .
Five years later, Savannah Boudreaux couldn’t be happier as a small-town Southern doctor and single mom to a young son. There’s only one thing missing. Her stepbrother, Garrett, has just been released from prison, and although he may be a free man, he’s become a bitter shadow of the kind and caring man who once came to her rescue. Now Savannah will cross the line to save Garrett from himself: to prove that he can live his life, love whoever he wants . . . and be a wonderful father to their son.
Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.
After college, Laura Marie Altom did a brief stint as an interior designer before becoming a stay-at- home mom to boy/girl twins. Always an avid romance reader, when she found herself replotting the afternoon soaps, she knew it was time to try her hand at writing.
It's grumpy lawyer Garrett from the Shamed series, and he's in love with his step-sister. I think he's been in love with her since they met but won't admit it to anyone. They have one night together and then life goes to wrong and Garrett spends the next five years in jail. Garrett and Savannah are hot together and throw in an ex's crazy family plus a really cute little boy it makes a great story. Loved seeing little bits of Nate, Ella, Liam and Carol.
Now I have to go read book 3 in the Shamed series cause some how I missed it.
I didn't (and still don't) understand WHY A HIGHPOWER ATTORNEY wouldn't fight these charges. Everything after that was stupid. Garrett was rather dumb for someone so smart. I didn't like him at ALL!!!!!!
“Stepping Over the Line” – the first book in the new “Stepbrother series” by Laura Marie Altom was not my first book by this author, so I knew what to expect when it came to her writing style.
It as well developed as I thought and I was not surprised to find the story was moving at good pace. I have read my fair share of stepbrother novels so I have grown accustomed to the way the plotlines flow. This one is different though.
At first I thought it would be a nice difference but the more the story continued the more I noticed that due to this difference there was something very important missing. I would like to call it “NEED” …
A Stepbrother romance (at least for me) is a story about two people that feel the NEED ( like “NEED for air” ) to be together. Two people that are not able to like function without each other – having tried to resist each other over a long time. You get my meaning ? I think if you read “stepbrother / forbidden love” romances you will get it.
So now imagine my surprise when I went through this story and found no “NEED”…
What I found was
“the want to have something that you should not have” Or even worse the
“we made a mistake and now we have to work from there” comment (I can not explain more without spoilers)
What nailed the coffin for me was a comment in an southern “gone with the wind” kind of way giving reason to their explanations.
I was sitting there staring open mouthed at the book thinking “Did I just really read THAT” ? THIS is really the explanation those two are going to give their parents.
The story itself was actually pretty good from its plot idea – it was just that the emotional side which is very important to me was well also “gone with the wind”.
I could not feel the "need" for them to be together and I am very sorry to be so blunt but I am kind of frustrated about this as I really like stepbrother novels AND this author and I really wanted this to work.
This one has it all. A hero you like, a heroine you like, people who are real and have flaws, a situation that isn’t ever going to be totally tidy, sort of like life, and characters who deserve happiness.
Forbidden romances can be fun. The forbidden aspect heightens the wondering if they will be able to figure out a way to get the HEA and, more importantly, if there is a way that it can be resolved that works for the story and the characters.
You get to know the characters over time through the first few chapters, so when you get to the meat of the story, you already know how they feel about one another, and why they are denying it. But, you still find yourself on their side. Garrett was in such a position, and he made the choices he made to protect Savannah, after taking what he felt was so much from her. Savannah had to deal with loving a man she shouldn’t and deal with the fact that the reason she shouldn’t love him went a lot deeper than just (really, enough happens that this is a “just”) being her stepbrother.
The writing, the dialog and the characters are all strong and you won’t want to put this one down. I know I read it in about a day because I just had to know what happened and how it worked out. Garrett and Savannah deserved happiness.
This one is making both my 5-star and my “re-read” list.
Let me make this perfectly clear, folks. This one stepped over the line and broke so many of my book character rules of conduct I’m not even going to waste my time or yours listing them all. Just know in my romantic reads I actually have to like the main couple/storyline/writing, which was not the case here. Enough said..I’m moving on. Here’s to hoping others enjoy it. It just wasn’t what I consider a good romantic read.
Title: Stepping Over the Line, Series: Stepbrother, Book 1, Author: Laura Marie Altom, Pages: 244, manho hero, surprise pregnancy, hero is sleeping with lots of heroine’s friends, heroine has a boyfriend but sleeps with hero then goes immediately back to boyfriend, could not finish.

I really enjoyed this one. Some of these "stepbrother" stories just don't work for me but after knowing Garrett from the Shamed series by this author I just had to read this! Am I ever glad I did.
From the time they first met Garrett and Savannah have fought an incredible attraction. They manage very well until a very steamy encounter at the party for her medical school graduation. They both know that was a mistake and Garrett returns to his life in California. He's working hard to put her out of his mind. That is until he is called back home to NC to attend Savannah's sudden and unexpected wedding. That's when his life will take a devastating turn and things will never be the same.
I thought this was a great story and I think you will too. I highly recommend it.
I have to start out by saying I really wanted to love this novel. You don't understand how bad I wanted to love it. I love step-sibling and things of this nature plot lines because they fascinate me. This book was quite disappointing and I have to say it was hard to finish. If you can stomach the ridiculously insane plot and the fact that it kind of all is jumbled together unrealistically, you might enjoy and easily get through this book. The author does get an A for effort but I feel that the editor didn't do their job in really helping the story make sense and progress naturally. Just 2.75 disappointed stars from me.
Well i actually disliked the h in this one more than the H. The h had b/f and cheated with the H, practically jumped him to have sex with him, then went and had sex with b/f right after!! disgusting. she knew she was pregnant and likely for H but did not tell him, accepted b/f proposal. H was was also sexing anything that walked - I didnt consider that cheating - sure he had feelings for step sis but no commitment and she was already with someone. On the night of the h's rehearsal dinner h/H found b/f sexing one of the bridesmaid ( same one that H slept with)-scuzzy. H accidentally caused b/f 's death during fight (fell and hit head) this sent him to jail messing up his life ( he was lawyer). The almost in laws pretty much made H's life a living hell, h's almost bil lied that the kid was his brother's and used that to manipulate the h into pretty much doing what the family wanted. The H was let out, tried to fightg for h who by then just knew kid was his, didnt tell him at first, bil lied because he wanted her for himself! a few obvious twists with story but could not get past h's behavior in the beginning, overall ok read.

My ‘Blogging Reader’s Review’ after reading an ARC Copy of ‘STEPPING OVER THE LINE’ (via: BooksMoviesFandoms.wordpress.com):
“Stepping Over The Line” is the first novel in the new Stepbrother Series by author Laura Marie Altom. This novel is a part of the Contemporary Romance genre and offers a twisted-romance that is both taboo and unconventional. Regardless, the emotional connection and the secrets make for such an entertaining story. Stepping Over The Line is written in the two main character’s P.O.V.’s(point of views) of Savannah Boudreaux and Garrett Marsden.
When Garrett Marsden was first introduced to Savannah, they were both teenagers who’s parents were getting married. Any kind of attraction felt from either of them was squashed and ignored because they would become step-siblings and nothing more. Garrett Marsden has been known as a jerk, heartless and soulless because of his “I don’t care” attitude. He’s a rich, tough attorney as well as a sexy male specimen who finds it easy to pick any female he wants- except one. The One who has had his attention since they were teenagers when they were first introduced by his father. His step-sister Savannah.
Savannah is a beautiful and hard worker who has a good head on her shoulders. Her future is set with a residency waiting for her in Boston after graduating from medical school. Her dark hair and green eyes have always been on Garrett’s mind but things would change in a completely different direction on the night of her graduation. Savannah and Garrett take their eager curiosity and twisted-attraction down a road of no return together.
Savannah finds herself in a surprising circumstance that will change her life completely. It brings up new questions about her feelings and her future involving Garrett and her current boyfriend Chad. When Savannah and Garrett find Chad in a revealing situation, things quickly go downhill, bringing them to a terribly heartbreaking split in the road of their lives. Chad’s brother Canton enters the picture as a friend to Savannah, bridging the past and present after tragedy ties their two families together.
Unfortunately, there are secrets waiting to be found but a few people are determined to keep them hidden for different reasons. Who can Savannah trust and will her secrets destroy everyone in her life? How will Garrett’s life be changed and will he ever get passed those drastic changes? And who is really not as they seem? This story-line has many twists-and-turns and unexpected moments that will send readers through some ups and downs with these characters. They aren’t perfect. They find themselves dealing with their emotions and situations in different ways. This is worth checking out if you enjoy stories with forbidden love interests and dark sordid secrets. If you enjoy that, then this book is for you! :)
My star rating for STEPPING OVER THE LINE is: 4 out of 5 stars! :)

If you've read the Shamed Series by Ms. Altom, this is the book that will finally give you a glimpse at the story behind Liam's always grumpy lawyer, Garrett. But, you do not need to read this series prior to reading this. The author gives you plenty of background info on Garrett. And besides, his story is different from Liam's.
The forbidden relationship of the step-siblings makes for one hot and fantastic story! Wow!
Garrett has had a thing for his step-sister since the day he met her. Being the relationship is taboo, he did his best to keep his distance. But, he just can't help look and wonder "What if?".
Savannah has thought the world of her older step-brother. Someone she looked up to and thought was sexy as hell at the same time. But he's her step-brother. It would be wrong on so many levels.
One night. She wanted one night to be wild, get it out of her system and forget about it. To see if it's as good as she always hoped. But that one night would give her memories for a lifetime.
This was a great book! Sometimes a spin off series will involve characters from the main series, and this one does, just not a lot. A couple scenes at most. It is it's own story with few appearances from characters in the main series. Which is great because we want to know about Garrett and not use this as a drawn out Epilogue for the main series.
Laura Marie Altom has quickly become one of my favorites. She is an exceptional writer and I can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve for her future books.
This is my first read of this author and, right off the bat, I have to say I enjoyed her writing style. There’s a great balance between inner voices, actions and words that kept things interesting. Going in, that blurb had me intrigued and I so wished the storyline had kept me equally engaged…
Garrett was a successful lawyer though love had eluded him. He’d admired Savannah from afar but, given she’s his stepsister, there was at least one major reason not to pursue her. Oh, and she might be already taken as well.
“I had great cars, houses, and an endless supply of eager women. Literally, the only thing I didn’t have – could never have, but had always wanted – was Savannah.”
Savannah, on the other hand, may have been taken but she’d always looked at Garrett as something more than just a brother.
You cloak yourself in this tough-guy persona, but it’s me. I see beyond your mean lawyer act.”
They were both torn and the emotions they felt seemed heartfelt and genuine. I tried to get over the fact that she was, well, TAKEN. And also the fact that they were both well educated and extremely intelligent, successful people making some highly questionable decisions. I understand heat of the moment—and their moments were HOT and tingly for sure—but, just as I wanted to believe their love was real, all of their actions had to ring true. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me.
I will definitely try this author again, though, as she built strong characters and an intriguing plot. Even if I got hung up on the details. ~ Diane, 3.5 stars
I had high hopes for my first foray into Stepbrother books. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed. The characters were unlikable, dragging the story through pages of repetitive angst over the fact they couldn't be together. I found the reasons behind this barrier to be weak and, at times contrived. Garret and Savannah did have chemistry, but it wasn't used in a way that drew me in. There wasn't any build-up, their initial encounter coming out of nowhere. And while, initially, their past and development of their relationship was shown through flashbacks, that was eventually abandoned and the reader was more often told that they were best friends and belonged together. The best part if the book was Cook, who was endearing and delightful.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for honest feedback.
This was a ew book by this author so I didn't know what to expect.
The story line sucked me in right away. The forbidden step brother usually does, but I found her to be childish and a little bit of a promiscuous at the beginning. I mean her jumping from her step brother and then boy friend within 10 minutes didn't sit well with me. I go it I just didn't like it.
The story took a curve ball through everything I thought would happen to not happen.
Enter the son he didn't know. Again it took her a really long time to do a paternity test, making me want to jump into the book an yell at her!
So I was more on Liam side than I was on hers. Frankly she semi ruined the book for me!
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
I found this to be a somewhat unusual story, which did a good job of bucking some obvious trends. At times it didn't feel like it held together very well, but I liked the premise behind the book. It is difficult to explain much more than that without revealing spoilers.
There are some good scenes and the side characters, such as Violet, add to the story. Probably the most inconsistent element is the parents. They are either genuinely clueless, or not the great parents they are claimed to be!
Garrett knows how to woo his woman, "he framed my face with his hands, giving me no option but to meet his intense gaze. “After I kiss you, I’m going to carry you to your bed, and give you a proper eff.” Garrett is always willing to please his woman: “You want a marriage proposal?” “Did I say that?” “You implied it. Done. Marry me— now.” I loved Garrett and I liked this book.
This is the first book that I have ready by Laura Marie Altom. It was a little slow in the beginning getting me to connect to the characters but after about 1/3 of the book it sucked me right in. This book is about step siblings and how their lives change forever when they give into their desires for each other.
I am going to keep a look out for the next book in this series. Happy Reading.
Garrett wants something he can’t have and that is his stepsister Savannah. One night five years ago he crossed the line and reacted to the attraction between them, but when things change in an instant and Garrett ends up in prison he cuts Savannah from his life. Now he is out and looking to restart his life and the attraction for Savannah is still alive and growing.
Five years ago Savannah let her attraction for Garrett take wings and changed her life forever. She is now a single Mom and small town doctor thinking life is good, but her ex-finance’s family may cause more havoc then either she or Garrett are prepared for.
This is my first time reading Ms. Alton’s work and I had some difficulty sticking with this book. It was an overall good read, but it was not one of my favorites. It did have some good parts that captivated my attention and brought a little mystery with it as well.
Fantastic read! I loved the forbidden chemistry between Savannah and Garret. Also loved the added aspect that Savannah’s son Cook played a large part in this book. Garret and cook’s instant connection was adorable. I throughly enjoyed this book and writing style of the author. Will definitely seek out more of her books.
I don't really know how to start this review, I am really torn after reading Stepping Over the Line by Laura Marie Altom. My thoughts are honestly a bit jumbled as I had mixed feelings throughout this book. While there were things that really didn't work for me here, I couldn't put this book down! I am a huge sucker for stepbrother romance stories, and this one was unlike any that I have read before.
Garrett and Savannah have had feelings for each other for years, but being step-siblings (no actual relation) they have never acted on them. Though they have fought to stay away from one another, when Garrett returns home to celebrate Savannah's graduation from med school everything changes. The attraction become more than they can fight and they give in though shortly after Garrett finds out that Savannah has a boyfriend. Things quickly change when Savannah finds herself pregnant and engaged, resulting in an incident that winds up with Garrett in prison for five years and them not speaking for any of it. But upon his release, Savannah and Garrett once again find themselves drawn to one another though Garrett is nothing like the man she once knew. But can Savannah save him from himself and finally see if they can have everything that they have always wanted?
I liked Savannah and Garrett most of the time. I felt the attraction between them right away and I did feel as though they had a connection. But I also felt like it was at times contradictory. There were times throughout this story that their connection felt strong and as though they had never felt for anyone the way they did about each other. It was described ore than once that way and I did see that sometimes. But there were also times that it really felt like Savannah wasn't completely into Garrett, and that she had just as strong of feelings for Chad. It was hard to really feel that absolute need for each other here when Savannah would talk about how much she loved Chad. There were also times that it was hard to connect with both of them. They each did some pretty hypocritical things that had me frustrated with them both. It was just kind of back and forth on whether or not I liked them, but the one thing I will say is that I couldn't get enough. I really wanted them to work things out and I just had to keep reading to see what would happen next.
While there are several things that I would like to go into, I won't so as not to spoil the story. The plot here was pretty insane at times, and honestly felt all over the place. Again, I couldn't put it down, but at times it felt like the author was just throwing everything in here including the kitchen sink. It was unrealistic and far fetched, but was one of those where you just couldn't look away. There was one thing that I wished that Savannah had done that was beyond common sense, and yet she took so long to actually do it. I think that was what bothered me the most, even with all the crazy things that happened here. I think that this book is one that people will either love or hate. If you are looking for something that is realistic and straight forward, this one probably isn't going to be for you. But if you are looking for something different and this sounds like one you might like, I recommend giving it a shot. While there were things that didn't work for me, it was one that I couldn't put down and held my interest the entire way through.
Stepping Over the Line (Stepbrother #1) by Laura Marie Altom
Forbidden love, tortured souls with an unbreakable bond.
Garrett fell for Savannah the first time he laid eyes on her when he was seventeen and she was fifteen. Unfortunately for Garrett she was to become his new step-sister putting him in the role of big brother making Savannah untouchable. Living together as brother and sister was torture for him. When he finally left their little southern town he was able to put her out of his head. He jetted off the L.A. to become a hot shot lawyer and live a life of excess so he could purge her from his thoughts. It didn’t work. Even just the occasional family get together left Garrett sullen and grumpy as he denied himself the only woman he ever truly wanted.
Savannah wished that her sexy as sin step-brother would throw caution to the wind and make a move. She has loved him since the first time they met. One drunken night she takes matters into her own hands and they share a forbidden erotic experience of the best sex she ever had. It was wrong they both new it, it should never have happened. But things take an unexpected turn after their one night of passion and their lives will never be the same.
My Review: I really loved Garrett immediately, He was broody, sexy and sweet at heart. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for Savannah. He proves that by going to jail after accidentally killing her fiance when they catch him cheating on her at their engagement party. Garrett was so easy to love. I felt for him and his heartbreak throughout the book. He sacrificed his life for Savannah.
Savannah on the other hand I had a hard time connecting with her part of the story for a while. About 70% in I finally started to understand her and even like her. At times earlier in the book I felt she was a bit naive and made some really terrible uneducated decisions that I personally found a little unrealistic. Eventually she did win me over as she started to admit that Garrett was what she wanted and who cares what the town would think. I was happy I waited her out.
This was a different kind of step-sibling romance. The chemistry was great, the sex scenes were dirty and hot. What really got me about the story was the emotions and the angst of the characters and how they dealt with the curve balls that life threw at them.
The epilogue was fabulous I loved reading about the other couples from the previous series. I would definitely recommend this book—I look forward to more in the series.

Wow - this novel was replete with Southern cliches! Minus the antebellum costumes and slavery, one could almost feel they were back in the pre-Civil War South. The usual suspects in Southern literature show up: the local elites (with all the corruption and good 'ol boys shenanigans that accompanies it), the Southern belle for whom butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, the tough, but kind-hearted and oh-so wise Mamie, Southern intrigues, and over the top cares about cotillions and the like.
You can practically taste the mint julep and sense the muggy perfumed air of the story's setting. So, I guess in one sense, the author did a great job establishing the Southern environs of her story, but it's too bad that it reads something like a satire of Southern life.
The main protagonists did have hot chemistry, but were so immature, hot headed (more Garrett than Savannah) and stubborn. This novel could have been cut in half if they just acted their age and had adult, honest conversations! It's just so frustrating when supposedly intelligent adults (a lawyer and a doctor) act like dumb juveniles. The only thing that ameliorates this for me was the fact of their small town setting having an oversized influence on their thoughts and actions.
The taboo nature of their relationship didn't faze me (indeed that's the main draw of the story for me). Rather, I was interested in how Laura Marie Altom would present an honest examination of how a romantic relationship between step siblings could work. At least in this regard, I felt the author did a fair job of exploring the bomb a sibling romance would/could set off in a family. However, she did the readers a disservice by abruptly cutting off the resolution to family reactions and dynamics after Viola gives her "wise old Mamie" speech. More needed to be shown to see how we went from a horrified Mom and Dad to a grand wedding celebration.
If the author had toned down the Southern cliches and provided more depth to the story, and maturity to her characters, I would have rated this above 2 stars. As it is, I honestly don't feel it deserves more than that.
Garrett Marsden is all to familiar with wanting something that he can't have, long ago it was made clear that the woman he loved was off limits, mainly because she is his stepsister, in marriage only, and it has been haunting him for years. One night five years ago she took him by complete surprise and confessed that she too was fighting an attraction, an attraction for him, and that night he allowed her to act on their desire, with the thought they might really be onto something, but the minute their elicit little affair was over she introduced him to her boyfriend, and it completely crushed any hope that Garrett had about them ever being together. So, he made the painful decision to let her go, knowing she had found happiness with someone else, pretty much sealed the deal for him. And shortly there after he found himself heading for jail, for circumstances beyond his control, and hasn't heard from her since... but now that he has been released he is thinking it might be time to reconnect!
Savannah Boudreaux let her dark desires for her step-brother get the best of her five years ago, and it spawned a one night affair, that changed the course of her life in ways she never thought possible. She is now a single mother to a five year old son and also a small town physician, he life couldn't be much better than it is right now...maybe with the exception of her son's father being part of their lives. The question is... does he want to be part of theirs?
This was my first experience with Ms. Alton's work, and I have to say I was quite impressed with what I read, and moved to add more of her stories to my reading lists. This story captivated my attention from the first sentence and held on tight right up until the very end. It's one of those stories that will steam up your tablet screen, steal the breath from your lungs, shed a few tears and keep you engaged the whole way through! Definitely one of the most impressive first reads that I have stumbled onto in a long while, I highly recommend you give it a try!!

Review:
Unfortunately, this story fell flat for me. I had really high hopes for it when I read the blurb, but I was left wanting on this one. The events in the story are a little out there and pushed the believe-ability limit for me. The other thing that kind of put me off was some of the terms used, they were again a little out there and out-dated. I know no man who calls a women vagina a honey pot... The characters themselves were likable and there was chemistry, but the spark was missing. For me this story needed to either go really dramatic/realistic or super taboo. It fell into that middle group where it not either and it made it seem, for lack of a better word silly. One last thing, in the blurb they probably should not have given away that the baby is really Garrett's when in the book it is written as they really not a question as to whose (the dead finance) it is for most of the book.
Sorry, I really wanted to like this more.

Garrett has everything in his hands – wealth, and successful career, except for the one thing that he wanted since he laid eyes on it: his stepsister. He tried to fight the emotions and the lust that he feels whenever they were in the same room. But during Savannah’s med school graduation, something happened between the two of them, and it was never the same again. Then he gets to meet her boyfriend. Things happened that brought the two of them apart.
I hated the fact that he just gave up and didn’t fight. He could have set himself free, if he only tried – after all, he was a hotshot lawyer, wasn’t he? He welcomed his fate with open arms, and for five years, he didn’t see Savannah.
Five years later, Savannah was a single mom with a great practice being a small-town doctor. She couldn’t deny it, but the only thing that was missing was his stepbrother. She lost both her best friend and her brother when he got incarcerated. But now, he’s back. She was happy that he was back, but the feelings she had back then, just got magnified, which was the problem. There was no way there would be a repeat of what happened five years ago.
I loved the forbidden romance blossoming between the two of them – they tried so hard to fight it, and I was just glad they finally accepted their fate. Enough steam to warm your sheets, some crazy-(ex) in-laws and an adorable kid – makes this one an exciting read.

Stepping over the line by Laura Marie Altom is the first novel that I have had the privilege of reading by this author and I have to admit I really did enjoy it.
This wasn’t one of the usual down and dirty stepbrother novels that I have read previously, it was one that touched on the taboo side of it. To say I found this refreshing was an understatement.
In the book you meet Garrett and Savannah Marsden, brother and sister, but only by marriage. When Garrett was fourteen years old his father marries Savannah’s mother but he finds himself instantly attracted to her. Because of the fact that their parents were now married, he believes that there can never be anything more between them.
Fast forward to Savannah’s graduation dinner and subsequent doctors internship, and Garrett discovers that the attraction is mutual. Savannah, using her intoxication as bravery, consummates that attraction in a moment of lust. That one moment will throw her life into a turmoil she could have never of anticipated.
What happens next is a variety of twists and turns that sees you thinking that you know how it will end, only to find out that the author has other plans.
Will Savannah and Garrett end up together, well that you will have to read the book to discover. This one I would highly recommend as it is not your typical romance read. It has the ability to keep you on your toes and hanging on until the very end.
This is your typical step-brother/step-sister romance. Garrett and Savannah have had feelings for each other for years. However they never acted on it. But finally on the day of Savannah’s graduation from college they act on their feelings and have sex; out in public mind you. Of course Savannah has guilt feelings because she has a boyfriend. When she finds out she is pregnant, her boyfriend proposes believing he is the father. She accepts. On the night of the rehearsal dinner, Savannah and Garrett come across her fiancé and another women in a very compromising situation. After a fight with Savannah’s fiancé goes wrong, Garrett finds himself serving 5 years in prison. Garrett is supposed to be this high powered lawyer, yet he did not fight to get himself off or a reduced sentence. This is a little unrealistic. I am usually a fan of this author but this book not so much. While there was chemistry between Garrett and Savannah, it was more of a rough chemistry. If that makes sense. It was not that sweetness you see in other books. So it was hard to connect to the characters. One thing that really became annoying is their constant inner dialogue about we can’t do this, we are brother and sister, blah, blah, blah. It was said over and over. They are not brother and sister, nor are they related by blood. They are two people whose parent married each other. Even though I don’t feel this is one of the better works by this author, it does not deter me from reading more books by her.
This book was a bit of a conundrum for me. I like the characters, and I even like them together, but the style of the book was just too over-the-top for me. He was a nice guy, yet it seems like too much effort went into making him seem vulgar and raw. And the step-brother/sister thing wasn't just the back drop to the story, it was the obsession of it. I think had parts of it been panned down somewhat instead of feeling overly exaggerated, I would have liked it a lot more.
Garrett Marsden and Savannah Boudreaux met when they were both teenagers and their parents met and got married. They had instant attraction to each other, but tried to play it off and ignore it for years while only sharing a friendship and trying to go with the flow of their newly merged families. When they all come together for Savannah's graduation from med school, the pretense all blows up when Garrett and Savannah share a drunken romp that changes their lives forever!
Mistakes are made, and Garrett winds up going to prison for a few years, while Savannah goes on to finish her residency and become a doctor, while also becoming a single Mom. When Garrett is released from prison and comes back home, it's hard for him to settle back in to figure out where he belongs in the puzzle now. Danger eventually comes knocking, and secrets come to light. Will Garrett and Savannah get the future they hungered for with each other?

I had issues with the whole “conflict” in Savannah’s mind.
The whole “what people would think” got me rolling my eyes and look where it took Garrett and Savannah (well, OK without all this sociality thing we wouldn’t have so much angst but….)
I just couldn’t understand how Savannah “loved” Chad and/ or his family, and all this grieving and guilt about a cheating fiancé who said I love you to his fiancée’s friend.
Death just wasn’t enough reason to close your eyes and believe blindly your almost brother in law and the identity of your unborn child
And what about Garrett giving up without any fight…
I think that was my major issue…
And on the other side that, our clandestine lovers just can’t say no to each other and their “sinful” feelings, having several sexual encounters to just shut the other one out because of “the shameful feelings”….
I handled better the other part of the story, I guess because there was when Savannah finally got over the gossips and social pressure
Really…. South people are really this way, all about saving the reputation and hiding? It was a little too cliché for me. Thanks god lots of things saved the story, like Garrett and Cook relationship, and discovering the soft and loving side if Garrett…
All in all, despite the sociality “dilemma”, I enjoyed the plot and loved the ending.
