Nolan Brothers #2

Sweetest Mistake

Rate this book
When these two opposites attract, mistakes will be made. Lots of mistakes. Big, long, hard mistakes. Over and over, and over again…

When Emily Cole’s suitcase explodes on a crowded airport baggage claim in her new hometown, sexy cop Luke Nolan is the first to pick up her most intimate items, including her 7.5-inch, 20-speed, hot pink battery-operated-boyfriend!

In town to run the Winslow Inn on the picturesque island in Lake Michigan, Emily is determined to put her bed-and-breakfast in the small town's spotlight—while also keeping herself well out of it. But her sexy nemesis is bent on getting her into trouble, and when her impulsive retaliation to his teasing lands her in the local jail, Emily is ready to shove her tormentor into the lake… or the nearest bed.

Luke has one job—to keep the quiet, sleepy island town quiet and sleepy. No drama. No surprises. No tragedies. Never again. But the strawberry-blonde with the porn star mouth and interesting luggage turns his life upside down from the moment she sets foot on the island, and what began as a distraction from his memories of That Day, quickly turns into something more. Trouble is, Luke doesn’t want more with Emily—she’s not his type. She’s the opposite of his type. Until his brother Noah’s wedding, when bridesmaid Emily shows up with a sexy new look and their sweet tease escalates to a scorching hot hook-up that makes him forget why he was resisting the shy stutterer in the first place.

Getting involved with her would be a huge mistake, though it just might turn out to be the sweetest mistake of his life.

SWEETEST MISTAKE is the second book in the contemporary romance series featuring the five, Irish-born Nolan brothers. It is a full length, standalone novel with a Happily Ever After.

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

“I wasn't complaining. A quiet woman is like a mild winter. Both a rare and welcome relief.”

“It was the most special kiss of her life. The most special, intimate moment with a man that she'd ever experienced. So naturally, he had to ruin it. He pulled back. Smug satisfaction chased the heat from his face. 'So, how do you like me now?'”

“He was a Harley Davidson when she needed training wheels, but she wouldn't let her ignorance rob her of the chance to ride such a supreme vehicle.”

“You're a piranha... A small fish with a big bite.”

My Review:

When I wasn't smirking from the clever hits of humor – such as the embarrassing scene in baggage claim - my heart was constricted in a vise while reading this intensely emotive story. Sweetest Mistake is an intriguing character study, with both main characters burdened with decades of personal pain, humiliation, and suffered from guilt, and bouts of self-doubt and depression, although they handled their pain with vastly different methods of coping. Luke was gregarious and typically chose an outlet, with his favorite being the three Ws - women, workouts, and whiskey. Emily folded inward and generally avoided attention or hid at home. Combined, they brought out the best in each other and found compassion and peace they never expected to achieve, although both secretly feared. The story was thoughtful, poignantly written, occasionally frustrating, frequently heartbreaking, and smartly insightful and observant of human nature. Being that there are several more Nolan brothers yet to be tapped, I am anxious to see who will be the focus of the next installment. More, please!

Emily has come home to attend her cousin Mia's wedding to Luke's brother and to run a Bed & Breakfast place that was formerly owned by her cousin. While arriving at the airport, Emily's luggage spills all her goodies (especially her BOB vibrator) and Luke (local cop/sheriff) comes to her rescue and steals it from her!!!

Emily has had to take care of her sick mom for 10 years and has put her love life on hold until a year ago when her mom died and she moved close to her cousin to start over. She suffers greatly from stuttering and I won't lie, at times it got on my nerves because it was never ending. I get what the Author was trying to do, the message she was sending, but I think a bit less stuttering was needed to enjoy this story - especially during the couple's many interactions & sex scenes.

Luke on the other hand is suffering from PTSD and a huge case of guilt. It takes a long time to learn what his story is When he is not harassing Emily, he is constantly pushing her away. This got old very quickly but I felt his pain...

All in all, this was a nice story with many humor moments & some awesome background characters (hint... horny Mayor for one....)

In terms of safety, both Hero & heroine are celibate . Hero has been celibate for a while (he couldn't remember the last time he had sex) and heroine only ever had 1 boyfriend in college 10 years prior whom she had sex 3 times only.

I struggled between 3 & 4 stars because of all the stuttering & Luke's constant pushing away. It took me a while to warm up to Luke but he sold me in the end....

I was so excited to read this story because I've already appreciated the Nolan brothers in "Beautiful Ruin" first book in the series and I was so glad to not have to wait too much before to have it.

Amy Olle made a great job writing this second book, that I have even liked more than the first one.Her words made me feel a real and strong connection with the main characters.

Emily's story has really broken my heart,I've also cried for her a few times.
She has had a really hard life, always feeling unworthy and insecure.
After her mother died Emily hoped to change her lonely future going to live on Thief Island and buying the Winslow Inn but soon she understood that it wasn't so easy to overcome all her insecurities and to start anew even sharing her life journey with a beautiful man like Luke Nolan.

As soon as I've finished this book I've asked the author what will come next...I can't really wait!!!

I really liked the blurb on this one and I thought it sounded really fun. If you read the blurb you see that Emily and Luke have a run in at the airport and a vibrator is involved. I thought this was going to lead in to a really sexy and fun story. It didn’t really turn out that way though. I had a hard time liking Luke because he came off as a jerk. Emily was taking his treatment to heart and this had to do with her insecurities. He thought it was fun to mess with her but it didn’t endear him to me. And when you discover why she had the vibrator it was really sad and not used for what you think it was. I did have a few laughs in the story and I really liked Emily but overall this didn’t work for me.

I’m not rating this because I skimmed more than I read.

I hated Luke from the very beginning...right up until the end. I didn’t even get to 20% before I was about to DNF. To make it worse, Emily’s character didn’t make any sense to me. One minute she’s all timid and her stutter is debilitating...next thing we know it’s no big deal. Don’t even get me started on his harassment of her. In one scene she’s scared to leave her house to be pulled over, then in the next it’s like she’s a different character.

I skimmed to the end and hated Luke even more. The only reason he goes after her is because his boss tells him to (for his career)...and at the end, instead of being mad and hurt for how he treated her, she’s just so happy his boss told him to go after her 🤦🏻‍♀️

What a disappointing read after Shea’s book (#5 in this series) that I absolutely loved!!

Luke Nolan is charming, sexy, funny, stubborn, and frustrating as hell! It's easy to see what Emily sees in him. Their meeting in the airport where he picks up BOB was probably every woman's nightmare, anyone who's had a BOB that is. I read book one and was happy to see the follow up from that in this book, but you can definitely read this as a stand alone without being lost. I do recommend reading book 1 as well though to truly get the full effect of Noah's charm. The Nolan boys are trouble, in the way that they will capture your heart in a minute and take you on a wild ride. My heart tugged for Emily with her struggle over her stuttering. I have a slight lisp and a heavy amount of social anxiety. The times she was faced with talking before a crowd I could feel that chest pain, the grip of terror, the shakiness and nausea; everything that makes you want to run away and never turn back to face those people again. Both Emily and Luke have a backstory that will make you need tissues, so have them handy. I'm looking forward to more from this author! I'm hoping we get a book about Shea, or Jack next.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Normally, going home would be a joyous occasion, but not so for Emily Cole. She has never really felt that she had a home. She left college 9 years ago to care for her terminally ill mother.

When she decided to move back to Thief Island, Emily so little to bring with her that she got it all in two suitcases. When one of her suitcases is shredded at the airport baggage pick-up, she was shocked and devastated! The most beautiful man she had ever seen decided to help her gather her things, under garments and all!

He didn’t recognize Emily, but she recognized Luke Nolan. Emily was too shy in school to talk to him, or anyone else…Emily stuttered and had been ridiculed for it all her life.

Luke is intrigued by this quiet, curvaceous, and beautiful young woman. He would take every opportunity to talk with her, even using his position in the Thief Island police department. Any time he saw her in town, (and he watched for her), he would pull her car over…just so he could talk with her.

Of course, Luke has other admirers, many who want him for themselves and will do whatever they think will attract him…even trying to belittle the object of his interest, Emily.

Will Luke be able to get Emily to really talk with him? The only time she doesn’t stutter is when she is very angry or when she is singing…which just makes Luke want to get to know her better.

Will the bully from high school terrorize Emily as she did in school? Will Emily be able to run the bed and breakfast inn that she bought from Mina? After all, you have to be able to talk to people if you are inviting them into your home!!

This is an interesting story, with great characters, and some amazing twists. It has an involved plot. The characters are well developed and believable. The language can get “graphic” as can some of the scenes, and the story could survive without the “adult language and situations”, but the author also shows that the characters are interesting and doesn’t equate sex with love.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Amy Olle did an amazing job creating Sweetest Mistake (Nolan Brothers Book 2 and Standalone)! Bring your Kleenex and prepare for an emotional and story. The setting and integral parts or the story, complex characters and humor propels the quality of the book. With most series/standalone books you can read as a standalone and love it; however, reading the series escalates your connections to the various characters and feeds your curiosity.

Luke Nolan is charismatic, funny, and frustratingly tenacious. There were times I wanted to smack him in the back of the head for picking on Emily. Emily Cole will imprison your heart from the get go. They are a couple meant to be, who better to help them overcome and thrive than someone who understands and accepts you for who you are. Love is the strongest medicine to break down walls and build self-confidence.

I am rating Sweetest Mistake with a 4.8 stars! I will happily read it again and again and again along with telling friends about it. It is a book that will keep a special place in my heart. It is a book worth purchasing and reading!

Rating: 4.5*

Whilst I enjoyed 'Beautiful Ruin', I loved 'Sweetest Mistake'. Emily's shyness and uncertainty contrasted greatly with Luke's confidence and sureness. Emily was a character that you could completely relate to with the whole what could go wrong and embarrass you, will go wrong and embarrass you. From the first page, right the way through you feel for her.

Luke's teasing and way of getting to see her exacerbated the problem and actually had the opposite effect than he intended. Luke had to do a lot to redeem himself in my eyes for the behaviour that made Emily feel scared of going out.

This was a more playful, lighter tone with the interactions between Emily and Luke. As Luke gets to know Emily, she starts to relax and grow in confidence. A comedy of errors that will have you laughing out loud; a frustrating read where you will want to give Luke what for; but ultimately a sweet romance that will have you all doe eyed.

Such a beautifully written treasure of a book. I stumbled across the first book in this series, Beautiful Ruin, compelling me to reach out to the author. I love reading stories that are rich in characterizations, scene settings, and where the main characters are brought together to heal their pasts. This was so much that way. Picking up where Beautiful Ruin left us, Emily and Luke's story begins with a giggle out loud incident in the baggage claim of the small airport. From that point - Chapter 1 - I just fell into Amy Olle's second book. It is one of those books you don't want to put aside and dread each page that turns closer to the end. Beautifully written with a bit of drama, coming to terms with their pasts, and discovering this new path. I long for the next book in this series.....and the next. Amy Olle has become an author of great talent i will enjoy following.

Sweetest mistake is an amazing extension of the Nolan brothers series. Again sweet and sexy wonderful from the get go. I have to say, and this probably will come off weird-- but I love love loved that the heroine has a stutter. It shows something a little different that most authors wouldn't think to put in there for her to overcome and concur. Luke and Emily will make you fall all over yourself all over again. I have to say I am waiting with bated breath for the next installment in this series-- I have my fingers crossed for Jack to have the next book!

This book made me laugh as Like is determined to embarrass Emily from the start and he's so upfront about it.

It's gets very sad and my heart breaks for Emily, but she's such a strong woman. They've both been through difficult times in their lives and this makes them the people they are today.

I love the banter and camaraderie Luke and Emily have. I stayed up until 3am to finish it.

I was given this book for an honest review and I would give it 4 stars.

The saga continues about the troubled Nolan brothers.
This time it is about Luke and Emily.
Two people dealing with their demons.
It is interesting to see how the story and romance evolves between these two.
It also helps that there is the appearance of the Nolan brothers.
I really look forward to more stories about the other brothers.

This is one of those books that you cannot put in just one category as it inflicts so many different ranges of emotions from hilarious, to sad to tears to anger. Wonderful book to read. It starts out hilarious with Emily's luggage comes off the conveyor belt at the airport with her things all over the place and not in her luggage. One of those items is a pink vibrator. OMG, you could just image. Fortunately or unfortunately, the one man who helps her gather her things, to include the vibrator, is Luke, Mr. Hunky. She met him the year before; however, he doesn't remember her. She finally gets to her destination, an island in Upper Michigan. A few days later she finds out he is a cop and he stops her for all sorts of frivolous infractions which one has to laugh and her responses to him. Their bantering is a hoot.

However, as the book continues you find out that Luke considers himself a broken man unable to love and be loved.

There is so much to this book one cannot even begin to imagine. There are several twists and turns along the way. Definitely one to put on your TBR list.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed how the author brought out the difficulties that both Like and Emily overcome to live.
Parts of the story made my heart ache but you will see the need in order to give these two their happiness.
Only someone who has lived with lake effect snow can describe it, and the wind that blows through you despite layers of clothes. I sometimes miss the fun of childhood snowball fights, building snowman and making snow angels in the fresh snow so you can watch them sparkle in the moonlight. I will have to read more of the series to see about the ice skating.
Thanks for the references to TC. Everyone needs to be able to experience the vastness of the Great Lakes, be it Lake Michigan or one of the others they can be so beautiful and serine.
There is a special feeling falling in love in Northern Michigan.

Shucks, this was a great read. There were so many characters to learn about.

Emily is all alone in life, never very confident in herself and after her mom dies, she picks up everything she has in the world and moves to a little island and bought her cousin's house.

Officer Luke meets Emily at the airport as she is frantically gathering her belongings. His attention to Emily is so humourous.

The characters and there are some real characters! in this story are many and varied. I love their interactions.

I read this book in an anthology (Wedding Dreams) and didn't realize this was part of a series. It hurt a bit jumping into the series at book two only because you don't know who everyone is and how they are related, etc. but you can generally piece everything together.

Such a fun read. Lots of laughs and a few tears too.

This is book two in The Nolan Brothers series. This is Like and Emily's story and what a sweet read it is. These two characters get off to an attractive and enlightening start when Emily arrives in Lake Michigan, in the airport and her suitcase explodes. Of course, the only one to help her stuff everything back into suitcase is an attractive cop, Mitch and guess the items he finds to give back to you? Nope, not your jeans or socks! This story is chalked full of so many parts for these characters but they all come together smoothly and amazingly well. Eager to read more on the other characters brought into the series so far. Enjoy!

OK so I loved Ms Emily and her quiet charm. She is most definitely a pistol under her quiet and unassuming exterior but Luke just sets her off in all the wrong ways and makes her feel bad and stupid. Luke is playing and can't figure out why the lovely docile cute little Ms Emily just makes him dream dreams he thought he had moved on past and desire things he swore he would never want like love marriage companionship!!! What the HEY?!?! I love this story and how the author dealt with Luke and his PTSD and the gentle yet funny approach to the two becoming more than verbal sparring partners. It's fun and sexy and oh so emotional. I am loving this author and what she does with pen and paper.

Loved this book. Sweet and amazing...Ms. Olle made me love Emily so much, and Luke Nolan..this is the second in the series of The Nolan Brothers Novel Series...

Emily was taking over the bed and breakfast know as the Winslow Inn. She's happy and nervous. When she has a little embarrassing moment in the airport and Luke Nolan sees it all..

Luke doesn't know why but there's just something about Emily that draws him in..

See what happens..

Highly recommended...I absolutely adored this book.

Opposites attract

Well… the first part of the book description got me intrigued immediately! How could I NOT want to read it?!

This is a story about Luke and Emily and all the drama, and ups and downs they go through, to find each other. Opposites can and often DO attract. But is it always a good idea? Will it work out?

This is a wonderful story. Emily is new in town and is emotionally and socially anxious. Town cop Luke is a stickler for the rules and feels the need to know every little thing about every single person in town. He makes it a personal vendetta to find out about Emily, to the point of pulling her over every time he sees her, for the most outrageous infractions.

Sometimes mistakes help you find the right path

Poignant. Steamy. Sweet. Funny. Sad. This book is a rollercoaster. But it's a fantastic ride. Emily moves to Thief Island to start fresh. Luke has lived there his entire life but he feels far from the hero or golden boy everyone sees. This is the story of their journey into the light together.

Another Nolan brother bites the dust. Emily bought the inn from Nina and was com back to Thief Island when her luggage exploded up on the luggage ramp arches airport and runs into Luke who she hasn't seen since her cousins wedding to his brother. It's turns interesting after that.

I thought this was going to be at funny sexy read.

But it's actually a good story it is funny Bob you're going to love though you don't see much of him. Luke and Emily quite the pair you feel sorry for her and do feel sorry for him but for very different reasons I highly recommend this for contemporary it was pretty good.
