A heart surgeon tragically leaps to her death. A well-respected eye surgeon, on his way to purchase cocaine is found running through the streets of downtown Montreal. This former Chief of Ophthalmology is apprehended in the middle of a snowstorm wearing only a blue hospital gown and paper slippers. This book describes how alcohol and drugs devastated the lives of these two doctors. This is an up close and personal account of the slow decline in the lives of two highly-skilled professionals suffering burnout. The neural mechanisms underlying drug addiction are also explained, in an easy read.
10% of all doctors suffer from alcoholism and/or drug addiction. As few as 5% recover from their disease. New methods of treating addiction have raised this number to over 90%. Evidence now shows that mandatory drug testing could be the answer to controlling the epidemic, which is now consuming our modern society.
