„Vďaka obozretnosti, preziarovosti a rozhodnosti vodcu československého ĺudu, súdruha Klementa Gottwalda, vďaka nerozbornej jednote a zomknutosti Ústredného výboru KSČ okolo súdruha Klementa Gottwalda, vďaka neochvejnej vernosti a oddanosti všetkého československého ĺudu strane, vláde a súdruhovi Klementovi Gottwaldovi, vďaka nezdolnej vernosti našich národov k Sovietskemu sväzu bolo sprisahanie rozdrvené a úklady zločincov zmarené. Akokoĺvek nebezpečná bola rozsahom i hĺbkou zrady nepriateĺská činnosť Slánského a spoločníkov, [...] orgány štátnej bezpečnosti, verne ĺudu, KSČ a súdruhovi Klementovi Gottwaldovi, zadržali včas zločinnú ruku sprisahancov.“

„V druhej polovici apríla ma predvolal Kohoutek a pohnutým hlasom povedal, [...]
Päťdesiaté narodeniny Slánského oslavovali 31. júla 1951, vydali vtedy jeho zobrané spisy, Gottwald a Zápotocký podpísali vyhlásenie o zásluhách Slánskeho, oddaného syna proletariátu a verného člena strany. Dva mesiace predtým podpísali jeho rozsudok smrti.“

"Hlavné slovo mali Doubek a Kohoutek. Takého vysokého funkcionára možno uväzniť len so súhlasom Ústredného výboru. Hoci som zradca, mal by som mať aspoň toľko dôvery k ÚV, aby som si uvedomoval, že by ma neuväznili, keby nemali absolútne dôkazy o mojej trestnej činnosti.
Prosil som, aby mi oznámili, z čoho ma vlastne obviňujú a aby mi dali možnosť dokázať svoju nevinu.
Videli v tom typický židovský trik."

It was a good account of being wrongly investigsted for sedition during turbulent time of 1950s, when both sides of the Iron courtain hunted and destroyed their enemies, both real and innocent victims made-up villains. It had nothing to do with revolution devouring its children, because reaction and capitalism devours its believers too. Think of Pinochet, who was thrown out like a garbage when other global fascists felt embarassed by being associated with him! Stress from the increasing intensity of the Cold war, espionage and provocations organized by antagonistic sides of the conflict lead to witch hunts and enormous numbers of victims as a collateral damage. It is always hard to find the right ballance beteeen being a vigilant defender of socioety and being a zelous paranoid manhunter in times when the nation is in serious threat.

This book totally surprised me. I expected a recounting of the tortuous ordeal of the Czechoslovak show trials of the 1950s to be almost dreary in another retelling. Lobl (umlaut over the "o" in the original spelling, anglicized to "Loebl") is an economist, an intellectual who cannot help but parse the methods of his interrogators, his own reactions, and indeed the Marxist theories he once held so dear.
I can't help but think how, after Lobl, under duress, was compelled to admit to involvement in a fabricated conspiracy, and how, after the citizenry accepted the public trial as truth, governments and people in power manipulate events to further, by any means necessary, their aims.
It left me with a lot to think about in this one superpower, post-Abu Ghraib, late-Capitalism world.

I am interested in reading Lobl's other books, particularly, "Humanomics".

another really intense book. my dad didn't write his name in it but some of the notes i thought were in his handwriting. the author kept stressing "i wasn't brainwashed" and that he did those things because he felt they were the options, including his confession. i like the way he managed to connect with slansky and i really liked the miner who had to turn interrogator and definitely 100% did not want to. i liked how he talked about the effect on his family including how after his imprisonment he ended up getting divorced (which sounded mutual) even though his wife and kid stuck by him the whole time he was in jail which could not be said for other political prisoners. altogether a very affecting book about a crazy time in history that i don't know very much about, still.

Read this book to understand the inner workings of totalitarianism. The picture is not pretty. Fifteen leading Communists, most holding senior positions in the Czechoslovak government were put on trial in the early 1950s. They were forced to admit to a fabricated conspiracy that is preposterous when read. The Slansky trials as they became known were designed to intimidate the population and to enforce closer ties with the Soviet Union. The trials reeked of anti-semitism. Ten were executed. Loebl was given a life sentence in prison. His conviction was thrown out in 1963. The lesson learned that one can be favored today and executed tomorrow. Cozying up to dictators is a precarious game.

Outstanding historical record of how socialist revolutions eat their own. Something to remember nowadays, as totalitarianism is on the move again.
