Monster Hunter Extraordinaire. Or at least that's what the card says...
My name’s Hugo. I live in a tiny house with my buddy Medium Mac and our adorable little hellhound Rover. People pay me for what I would consider pretty menial work, but I suppose all of us have to pay the bills somehow.
Did I mention I hunt monsters for a living?
Okay, maybe hunting is a bit strong of a word. Then again, I’m the only one in the city doing this kind of work. It doesn’t matter if I know what I’m doing or not. In my expertise, it’s all trial and error. You think learning that vampires don’t like garlic was deliberate? Or that wooden stakes are the only things that can kill them? As I’ve learned, desperation can sometimes yield just what you were looking for.
Life was going pretty okay until I took a case from a mysterious old man. Rather than extort and ridiculously overcharge him, I may have inadvertently released a paycheck-affecting, interdimensional, border-jumping monster menace of Turipads, hell-bent on overthrowing my entire city. Looks like this case is going to need a lot more than simply a, “Woops, my bad” to fix.
It’s time for me to become the pay-by-the-hour hero this city needs.
PAUL W RYAN spent his formative years in Dublin Ireland, reading and proofreading everything from sweet wrappers to stolen Playboys until he eventually started writing stories of his own.
He made his debut as a novelist in 2014 with Rage, then in 2015 he published Moonstruck, and in 2016 he released his third book, Monster Hunter Extraordinaire.
Paul is currently a Digital Marketer in Dublin, where he spends his free time painting and playing tabletop wargames, gaming, and chatting about all things craft beer.
This book was entertaining and fun with lots of clever little phrases slipped in. An example of this : "The old man yelled in some foreign tongue, possibly Canadian." Enjoyed it enough to get the next book.
I am not usually this harsh in my critiques, but having just finished a different monster-hunter/crytpids series, I was excited for - and then seriously disappointed in this one. This is one of the worst books that I have read in a while. I gave it every chance and actually finished it (so it's not literally, THE worst book), however, it was a slog.
Quite honestly, the book reads like a 7th grade "Stream of consciousness" writing project.
The characters are completely unlikable AND uninteresting and the author misuses words all over the place. While (based on the character's personality) word misuse might be appropriate in his conversation, the author misuses words in outside descriptions as well. The plot has potential, which is then wastes, thrown out and stomped flat when the characters touch it.
This book is a good one. Reminded me of John Schwarzwelder's Frank Burly series for its over the top humor and cartoonish characterizations. (In a good way.) Very funny, and highly recommended!
Got the first book on a freebie day {permafree?} and the second one from kindle unlimited. What can I say, I like series or at least 2 to start with kind of thing. WOULD AMAZON PLEASE POST THE REVIEWS FOR THIS BOOK AND THE #2, HAVE DONE THEM 4 TIMES NOW, ON US AND UK.
In the first story, you meet Hugo, who has a handwritten laminated card that says Monster Hunter Extraordinaire. He has overdue rent, a friend he calls Medium Mac, and a not really adorable Hellhound called Rover. Oh and demon spiders called Turipads here in our dimension about to take this one over. {a little confusion in chapter 6 with continuity}. This is not Buffy.... Like this one for the most part, although did like the second with the background of his life but suggest reading in order for various reasons. {Mostly from my goodreads reviews, which actually show when posted.}
