It’s the final showdown between Preacher his longtime nemesis in a rip-roaring adventure from the New York Times bestselling author of Forty Guns West. Mountain men are skilled at survival. Preacher, the greatest of all those warriors of the forest, will kill anything—beast or man—that threatens his existence. Ten years ago, he taught this violent lesson to gun-crazed Ezra Pease when he ran the outlaw out of town. But Pease and his trail-scum gang are back—shooting up trouble and crossing the Big Empty to nail Preacher’s hide to a tree. So Preacher’s riding out to teach Pease one final lesson. But it could be too late because Pease’s vicious dealings have fired up an all-out Indian war. Now, with hard-riding death on both sides, Preacher and some old friends called Beartooth, Dupre, and Nighthawk are heading straight into lead-flying, scalp-slashing hell . . . Praise for the novels of William W. Johnstone “[A] rousing, two-fisted saga of the growing American frontier.”—Publishers Weekly on Eyes of Eagles “There’s plenty of gunplay and fast-paced action as this old-time hero proves again that a steady eye and quick reflexes are the keys to survival on the Western frontier.”—Curled Up with a Good Book on Dead Before Sundown

An outlaw from Preacher’s past is back and looking to start an Indian war between the Cheyenne and the Blackfoot. Add to the mix a group of traveling missionaries and a low life scum and his band of orphans. Preacher and his mountain men friends find themselves in the middle of one the frontier’s bloodiest showdowns.
The 5th installment of "Preacher" series. I really like these books funny and adventurous Preacher is the embodiment of Mountain Man. The more of these I read the more I wonder if Preacher was taken from real people. These stories are awesome and so worth the read or the listen. Please give them a listen..... <3
This continues to be a great series by Johnstone. Characters continue to intrigue and grow with surprising action and adventurous battles and feats. Only concern I see is that the plot seems similar from book to book. Preacher is a hard character with a wonderful heart hidden beneath that hard exterior. Excited to read more of this wonderful series.
After reading a few Johnstone Clan clunkers, including one that came out around the time this book came out, it's GREAT to read very good Johnstone Clan book.
The book is very well written with terrific narrative of surroundings and dialogue. Too many Johnstone Clan books will take Preacher or Smoke and have their dialogue entirely shift gears many times through out story making the reader have to wonder of the character's sanity. This book is pretty consistent with all characters.
Also, often efforts to add character nuances fails miserably. This author of the Clan deftly includes details that click in well. There are also various levels occurring throughout the book better handled than in other Johnstone Clan books.
The story has been written many times, including in Johnstone Clan books. But this is the better of all stories I've read.
Bottom Line: I recommend this book. 8 out of 10 points.
Preacher is back at it and as good as ever! This author is the only one I read for great westerns. When I was younger, I took after my mother who read Grace Livingston Hill and Little House on the Prairie books, instead of my dad who owned every Louis L'Amour book written. Westerns just didn't sound interesting to me. Then a couple years ago I won a Goodreads giveaway of a Johnstone book "Down the Dark Streets" which was not a western, but I enjoyed it and looked up his books to try another. What I found was lots of westerns. So I thought I would try one... I chose Shotgun Johnny and loved it. I really like his straightforward writing style with lots of interesting information of the old days before the westward rush. He can really bring a story to life! I can feel the snow, smell the coffee and the chill of being chased, or the thrill of victory. Always a couple gals to spice things up too. Highly recommend this author! You won't be disappointed.
The First Mountain Man #5 Cheyenne Challenge William W. Johnstone, J. Rodney Turner (Narrator)
As wagon train after wagon train wends its way across the landscape Easterners set on leaving behind packed cities, poverty, taxes, and military service stream into the West invading native lands and threatening their livelihoods. While supplying employment to the mountain men who inhabit the wilds and know it best the influx of civilization threatens their way of life as well. And where there are hapless immigrants there are gangs more than willing to raid their wagons and murder the riders.
These books are violent and follow similar patterns. Piles of bodies litter the scene almost like a video game.
I have read 4 Preacher books. One was the story of him running away from home as a child and his journey west. The other three were the same exact story. He finds a wagon train in need. He leads the wagon train which is beset by Indians and bands of robbers that have it in for preacher. The most beautiful woman on the wagon train falls for Preacher, but he keeps her at arms length and eventually kisses her goodbye. He kills somewhere between 30 and 60 bad guys. The end. This is the last one for me.
Ezra Pease makes a deal with some big shots from back East and then he heads West to the High Lonesome, the place Preacher had told him he better never see him again. As would have it Preacher catches wind of the polecat is back in his neighborhood thanks to a barroom brawl where Preacher beats a man, who deserved it, silly the path is cleared for Peace and Preacher to have one final showdown. Preacher gets help in this one from a few Mountainmen friends. Beartooth, Dupre, and Nighthawk all help Preacher on the journey that I deem a must-read.
A fascinating read of even more fascinating character i.e. Preacher. An innovative daring fighter Preacher deals with a big bunch of cutthroats stirring up the Cheyennes and Blackfeet Indians by selling guns and booze. When 'ol friends stand together against the gang of thugs of Ezra Pease, rest assured that things get nasty and brutal. Best reading experience guaranteed.
My husband and I really enjoyed reading this series we plan on completing read it it’s a great series to start from beginning to end if you just pick up a book in the middle it will still be good it’s just will explain everything that the previous books have this was a great book just like the others rating: five stars
Ok adventure. However, this series of books is starting to get quite repetitive. In these books, its like the west is full of 60% evil outlaw trash, 30% indians, 9% belligerently stupid and naive pioneers, and 1% competent good guys.
Preacher is at his best. A good time about the ghostly , but human mountain man. Lots of action, romance and downright action . A reader will not be disappointed. This tale will leave you yearning for more.
Preacher takes on another villain and his large group of bad guys. He also escorts missionaries to a safe valley location. With Indian friends and foes, many are killed. Preacher single handed lay takes out at least 30 trying to kill him. Johnstone does another great job!
This series has been for the individual who can appreciate old western classics. Chivalry and justice are not wasted in the pages of these novels. Thanks, William..
This "Preacher" Mountain Man adventure did not disappoint. My only complaint was that it was a little long, but that would be nit-picking. Who wants too short a Preacher adventure ?
Another exciting trip into the big lonesome. This episode again delivered excitement and adventure with twist and turns keeping us on the edge of our seats.
