Il Cerchio Celtico
Se leggere vuol dire aprirsi a un’avventura, con i romanzi di Björn Larsson non ci sono dubbi: all’avventura veniamo trascinati, spinti di pagina in pagina da una storia che ci avvince, un ritmo incalzante, una suspense abilmente tenuta, e da quella sete di libertà e verità che anima i suoi protagonisti rendendoceli così attraenti. Nel fluido e mobile elemento del mare, con i suoi «orizzonti infiniti, la leggerezza sconfinata e la voglia di vivere», e la sua lezione di umiltà e rispetto, come in quello altrettanto esigente della parola, Larsson si muove con la sicurezza di un navigato skipper, conducendoci lungo le sue rotte con gli strumenti più appropriati. Qui non è più il mondo dei pirati, degli arrembaggi, della tratta degli schiavi, dei personaggi resuscitati dai magici ricordi d’infanzia di Long John Silver, ma una storia dei giorni nostri, un thriller marinaro ambientato negli anni Novanta che ci porta al Nord, in epiche traversate di mari in tempesta, dalla Danimarca alla Scozia, tra venti scatenati e onde che si ergono come muri d’acqua, in inseguimenti e fughe senza tregua, in compagnia di Ulf e Torben e il loro Rustica, sulle tracce di MacDuff e Mary e di quell’organizzazione segreta che in Irlanda, Scozia, Paesi Baschi e Bretagna persegue con ogni mezzo il sogno di liberazione del popolo celtico. Se le trame e gli ideali politici del misterioso Cerchio Celtico ci sono lontani, resta il fascino di una civiltà millenaria che crede a tal punto nella parola da rifiutare la scrittura per non toglierle potere vitale. E al di là delle sfide e dei pericoli, degli amori e delle passioni, è il tema di fondo che sentiamo nostro, quello che Larsson pone sempre al centro delle sue storie: la libertà dell’avventura per riappropriarci di quella vita che ci lasciamo sfuggire misurando il tempo con il cartellino da timbrare.

Il North Sea d’inverno, con contorno di celti e druidi
Questo romanzo di Björn Larsson è della categoria "thriller" e "lettura d'intrattenimento", di cui non sono particolarmente amante. Perché l'ho letto? Mi affascinano le avventure di mare e questo mi pareva un (audio)libro giusto per passare qualche ora di guida pensando a paesaggi nordici e a raffiche di vento piuttosto che al traffico e alle temperature africane.
Morale? Il libro, 400 pagine abbondanti, parla soprattutto di mare e navigazione. Ormeggi, rotte, bussole, spruzzi, tughe, mani di terzaroli, sartie, rande, fiocchi, boline, stralli, isole e onde. Certamente l’altezza vertiginosa delle onde non è nulla in confronto con l’arditezza dei nomi dei luoghi: Dragør, Öresund, Limhamn, Pentland Firth, Skagen sono solo pochissimi esempi.
Probabilmente vado controcorrente, ma dico che le parti che mi sono piaciute di più sono proprio le descrizioni della navigazione, delle atmosfere marinare e dei paesaggi nordici, ben descritte e ben caratterizzate. Improbabile invece la trama, che mi è sembrata fiacca, sfocata e sfumata con personaggi inconsistenti e poco caratterizzati. Mi verrebbe da dire che letta la prima parte del libro si potrebbe tranquillamente interrompere (e la dice lunga sull'interesse della trama).
Bravissimo invece Vinicio Marchioni, il lettore, e molto bello l’audiolibro, senza i quali non credo sarei mai arrivato alla fine.

“PIù di noi, che crescemmo tra le montagne, / può forse il navigatore godere / la divina ebrezza / del primo miglio lontano da terra?”, così scriveva Emily Dickinson nel 1890, a proposito del senso di esultanza che sperimenta il terrazzano quando entra in contatto con la ‘divina intossicazione’ del navigare.
Naturalmente Larsson, classe 1953, non è un terrazzano, ma anche lui è ‘intossicato’ dalla visione del mare e della navigazione. Tant’è che a trent’anni va a vivere in barca a vela; il Rustica, proprio quella con la quale Ulf, lo skipper protagonista del romanzo, e il suo amico Torben salperanno nel rigido inverno del 1990, dal porto danese di Dragør.
La cultura dei Druidi e i misteriosi rituali del “Cerchio Celtico” faranno da sfondo alle avventure dei protagonisti, ma saranno il mare, le barche ed il fascino della navigazione i veri protagonisti della storia.
Imprevedibili correnti marine e tempeste invernali, canali artificiali, isole frastagliate e stretti insidiosi, regaleranno emozioni e passioni come se fossimo anche noi sul Rustica a lottare contro venti impetuosi e onde alte come scogliere, ma, miracolosamente, all’asciutto e senza patire il... mal di mare.
«Ora capivo cosa intendeva il navigatore inglese Ian Nicholson, che ne soffriva sempre, quando scriveva che esistono due stadi nel mal di mare. Il primo è quando si crede di dover morire. Il secondo è quando si comincia a temere che non si morirà.»
Izzo, in Chourmo, scriveva «di fronte al mare la felicità è un’idea semplice.». Per me, che sono cresciuto con lo Stretto negli occhi, è una verità... assoluta.

Ce roman n'est pas dénué de petits défauts (le plus grand restant à mes yeux le style, très froid, qui est certainement lié à la traduction en français) mais bon sang qu'il m'a transportée ! Je l'ai dévoré en quelques jours sans pouvoir m'arrêter, souhaitant toujours y revenir dès que je faisais autre chose. L'ambiance sauvage des côtes écossaises désolées, l'aventure de la vie en mer, la lenteur du temps, et la touche culturelle / ésotérique autour de la civilisation celte - c'était un merveilleux mélange. Je n'ai pas tout compris (je crois que c'est volontaire de la part de l'auteur) mais j'ai adoré, et je le relirais bien volontiers à l'occasion.

Andrà meglio la prossima volta...
Per chi ama la navigazione, la vela, i libri che narrano di viaggi per mare è superconsigliato. Avevo letto “La vera storia del pirata Long John Silver” dello stesso autore e mi era molto piaciuto: ne avevo apprezzato l’idea di fondo, lo stile, l’ironia, quell’umorismo misto alla profondità delle riflessioni che mi ha conquistato dalle prime pagine.
Confesso inoltre che adoro il formato e la carta dalla casa editrice Iperborea, da anni una vera garanzia nella scelta dei migliori testi della letteratura nordica.
“Il cerchio celtico” è per certi aspetti un vero ibrido: una lunga narrazione di un viaggio per il mare del Nord, a gennaio,su una barca, il Rustika, un mistero da scoprire su una pseudo-setta che coltiva antiche tradizioni, che contemplano sacrifici umani, una storia di amicizia e una storia d’amore impossibile.
La tematica del viaggio è ben trattata ed è coinvolgente: descrizioni di albe sul mare del Nord, burrasche, veglie notturne, manovre ed attrezzature marinare (Larsson non fa economia di termini specifici) il tutto ben diluito omogeneamente tra le pagine. Quello che non mi ha convinta fino in fondo è proprio la storia noir/thriller/mystery della setta fondamentalista celtica. Ho ponderato bene il mio giudizio, ho aspettato qualche settimana per scrivere la recensione: per quanto adori la scrittura di Larsson, cristallina e piacevole, a distanza di tempo, confermo che il romanzo non è il più riuscito dell’autore. Meglio leggere i suoi libri di viaggio, le sue riflessioni sulla libertà, sulla saggezza del mare senza sconfinare nel “genere”.

Pour moi cette lecture fut quasiment sans intérêt. Déjà, le fait que le livre soit à moitié constitué de récits de navigations a rendu la lecture lente et ennuyeuse, tout simplement parce que je n'y comprends rien et que ça ne m'intéresse pas plus que ça. Ça doit être passionnant pour les amateurs de voile par contre !
Et puis quant à la trame "polar", à aucun moment je n'ai été tenue en haleine, je ne saisis pas vraiment pourquoi Ulf et Torben se sont lancés là-dedans dès le départ et globalement j'ai trouvé l'intrigue terriblement molle et la fin est du même acabit.
À part lors les quelques passages sur l'histoire des peuples celtes, je me suis plutôt franchement ennuyée !
Et puis quant à la trame "polar", à aucun moment je n'ai été tenue en haleine, je ne saisis pas vraiment pourquoi Ulf et Torben se sont lancés là-dedans dès le départ et globalement j'ai trouvé l'intrigue terriblement molle et la fin est du même acabit.
À part lors les quelques passages sur l'histoire des peuples celtes, je me suis plutôt franchement ennuyée !

Ο Λάρσον καταπιάστηκε με ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον θέμα. Μια περιπέτεια γύρω από τον κελτικό πολιτισμό και τους απογόνους του, θα μπορούσε να φτιάξει ένα υπέροχο σενάριο γεμάτο δράση ένταση αλλά και πόλη κατατοπιστικό σε ότι έχει να κάνει με αυτόν τον πολιτισμό. Αντί για αυτό μας πάει από λιμάνι σε λιμάνι, αραδιάζοντας πολλές λεπτομερείς για την ναυσιπλοΐα, καθώς και μια περιπέτεια που αν δεν ήταν τόσο νωθρή και αργή, θα έμοιαζε, στην καλύτερη περίπτωση, με σενάριο ταινιών δράσης.

Η αφήγηση ήταν ανιαρή και άχρωμη. Δεν ακολούθησε της εντάσεις και τις κορυφώσεις της πλοκής σε κανένα σημείο. Χρησιμοποιεί το πρώτο πρόσωπο με έναν χυδαία ανιαρό τρόπο, μπαίνοντας στην θέση του συγγραφέα και προσποιούμενος πως όλη η ιστορία είναι ένα βιβλίο που γράφει ο αφηγητής μετά από όλα όσα πέρασε.

Αυτό το βιβλίο λέγεται ο μαγικός κύκλος των Κελτών όχι ο μαγικός κόσμος της θάλασσας! Η ιστορία μας εισάγει στον κόσμο των σημερινών Κελτών με τρόπο άγαρμπο και σύντομο. Δεν παρέχει ικανοποιητικές πληροφορίες για τον κόσμο με τον οποίο καταπιάνεται. Αντιθέτως, σύμμετρα μεγάλο μέρος της ιστορίας καταναλώνει η επίδειξη των γνώσεων του συγγραφέα στην ναυσιπλοΐα.
Στον επίλογο θέλησε να μην κατηγορηθεί από της κελτικές μειονότητες για τον τρόπο που τους παρουσιάζει και άρχισε τις ηθικολογίες, τα “τρέφω μεγάλο σεβασμό”, τα “στηρίζω των αγώνα των κελτών” κλπ., προσαρμόζοντας την πλοκή στο όλο τέχνασμα.

Τα κίνητρα των πρωταγωνιστών ήταν από πολύ αδύναμα ως ανύπαρκτα. Κανείς δεν θα πήγαινε βαρκάδα από την Σουηδία στην Σκωτία επειδή έχει κάποια δήθεν στοιχεία για ένα θέμα που δεν τον αφορά καθόλου. Κάνεις δεν θα ακολουθούσε τον φίλο του, σε ένα τέτοιο ταξίδι χωρίς καμία επιπλέον πληροφορία. Ειδικά αν αυτός ο κάποιος ήταν ένας ιδιοφυής ρέμπελος με αδυναμία στο καλό κρασί και στα βιβλία. (Επίσης, κανένας λάτρης του κρασιού δεν θα την έβρισκε ΠΟΤΕ με whiskey!).
Γενικά, είχε πολλά κενά, οι πράξεις των ηρώων δεν ταιριάζουν με τους χαρακτήρες τους, τα κλισέ ήταν πάρα πολλά και η γνώση που σου προσφέρει είναι ελλιπέστατη.

Αν μπορούμε να πούμε για κάτι θετικό στο βιβλίο, αυτό θα ήταν για τους χαρακτήρες του. οι χαρακτήρες στάθηκαν στο ύψος τους. Ο χαρακτήρας του Τορμπεν ήταν πάρα πολύ ενδιαφέρον και αν οδηγούσε αυτός την πλοκή θα είχαμε ένα πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρον μυθιστόρημα. Επίσης, η Μαίρη και ο Μακ Νταλφ όπως και οι αντιήρωες ήταν εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέροντες.

Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι με ενθουσίασε το βιβλίο και η αλήθεια είναι πως γρηγορά θα ξεχαστεί. Ήθελα τόσο να πληροφορηθώ για τους κέλτες όταν το ξεκίνησα, που θα του συγχωρούσα εν μέρη, το μέτριο σενάριο και την απαράδεκτη αφήγηση. Αλλά δεν κάνει ούτε καν αυτό.

Αν μπορούμε να πούμε για κάτι θετικό στο βιβλίο, αυτό θα ήταν για τους χαρακτήρες του. οι χαρακτήρες στάθηκαν στο ύψος τους. Ο χαρακτήρας του Τορμπεν ήταν πάρα πολύ ενδιαφέρον και αν οδηγούσε αυτός την πλοκή θα είχαμε ένα πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρον μυθιστόρημα. Επίσης, η Μαίρη και ο Μακ Νταλφ όπως και οι αντιήρωες ήταν εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέροντες.

Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι με ενθουσίασε το βιβλίο και η αλήθεια είναι πως γρηγορά θα ξεχαστεί. Ήθελα τόσο να πληροφορηθώ για τους κέλτες όταν το ξεκίνησα, που θα του συγχωρούσα εν μέρη, το μέτριο σενάριο και την απαράδεκτη αφήγηση. Αλλά δεν κάνει ούτε καν αυτό.

J'ai lu ce livre dans le cadre de la sélection d'été du Club de Lecture MS mais j'avoue ne pas avoir été convaincue par cette histoire...
J'ai décroché à plusieurs reprises de ma lecture car je n'ai trouvé l'histoire ni intéressante ni aboutie. J'ai trouvé les descriptions peu accrocheuses, il y avait peut-être trop de détails sur des termes maritimes que je ne connaissais pas.
J'avoue ne pas avoir tout suivi au niveau du Cercle celtique et des différents retournements des personnages, j'ai trouvé que l'intrigue était assez mal amenée avec trop de coïncidences et de choses non expliquées. Idem pour les personnages, ils sont sympathiques mais trop banals et avec trop peu d'éléments sur leur histoire, leurs motivations et je n'ai pas trouvé qu'ils avaient une alchimie particulière.
J'aurais aimé plus d'éléments sur le côté Celte de l'histoire car je pensais, à tort, que ce serait au centre du roman, mais non, ce n'est finalement qu'assez peu expliqué...
J'ai mis deux étoiles pour l'originalité de l'histoire, mais ce livre sera malheureusement assez vite oublié.

A poche pagine dalla fine sentivo già la mancanza del suono delle onde sullo scafo del Rustica, degli spruzzi di aria salata sulla faccia, del suono del vento sulle vele, del caffè caldo bevuto in solitaria nel pozzetto del timone, della Scozia, del whisky, della stufetta in coperta. Ho sentito la mancanza di Ulf e Torben, ai quali non mi ero affezionata subito ma che volete? Dopo settimane in barca a vela insieme si finisce per conoscersi bene!
Ecco direi che il Cerchio Celtico è questo.
La storia alle spalle di questa avventura per mare è interessante sotto tanti punti di vista: i celti, le minoranze, la supremazia delle nazioni, l’indipendenza di un popolo, l’uso delle armi…ma alla fin fine si riduce tutto a questo, e scusate se sarò brutale: una brutta storia per tre uomini innamorati di una donna che non è riuscita in alcun modo a catturare la mia simpatia.
No, quello che mi rimane nel cuore non è il complotto internazionale o la storia di una donna la quale indecisione sul se vivere o morire provoca davvero una fastidiosa serie di sfortunati incidenti, no.
Quello che resta nel cuore sono proprio il Rustica, il mare sconfinato, la libertà.
Ecco direi che il Cerchio Celtico è questo.

I thought that I would hate this book but was I surprised. It had all the flavor of the open seas and canals (in Scotland) and murder in the telling of this tale. Björn Larsson had gone from Sweden to Denmark to Scotland in his telling of this tale (in January). It was done in 1990 but you are brought into Ulf's and his friend Torben's attempt at figuring out the Celtic Ring, in Scotland. Björn doesn't let you go to long without a robbery, attempted murder, a beheading, and self defense. I really liked this book and I am sure you would too.

J'ai adoré ce livre: je l'ai dévoré en peu de temps. Le style est certes un peu froid, mais par là prenant et très réaliste: je sentais le roulis. les embruns, le froid pénétrant et humide, le vent qui claquait dans les voiles et le goût du whisky dans ma bouche, comme si j'y étais. J'étais totalement happée par l'ambiance glaçante, angoissante, de cette traversée de la mer du Nord en voilier en plein hiver, par deux fous qui ne savaient pas dans quelle galère ils se lançaient, à la recherche de lumière sur un mystère terrible: qui étaient les personnes rencontrées au Danemark, quel est le poids de la culture et de l'héritage celtes dans cette aventure ?
Je regrette toutefois qu'il n'y ait pas de carte pour se repérer sur toutes les localités citées, c'est parfois un peu compliqué de se représenter les crevasses et les fractures de la côte écossaise (de même, le vocabulaire très nautique n'était pas toujours à ma portée mais ne freine pas la compréhension de l'action).

In einigen Passagen etwas zu langatmig und segelaffin geschrieben, aber so habe ich als Segelunkundiger viel über das Segeln lernen und erahnen können. Inhaltlich gäbe es sicherlich einiges zu kritisieren, aber mich hat dieses Buch, das ich zufällig bekam, doch in seiner Spannungsausprägung und seinen Page Turner Dynamiken überrascht. Es hat mich im Ganzen gut unterhalten und am Ende ist es eine Geschichte, Fiktion eben und so ist diese Abenteuergeschichte genau das, eine Abenteuergeschichte.

Malgré un debut prometteur j'ai eu du mal à aller jusqu'au bout à cause de nombreuses longueurs et surtout une intrigue un peu molle. J'ai tout de même bien voyagé dans les îles écossaises et trouvé le duo Ulf / Torben plutôt sympathique.

Som seglingsskildring: kul för en inbiten fantast som jag själv (även om till och med jag storknade på sidlånga invecklade manöverbeskrivingar och detaljerade förklaringar om exakt hur protagonisten utför sina navigations-beräkningar). För den som aldrig satt sin fot på en båt är dessa stycken sannolikt rena grekiskan (som hade kunnat kapas i sin helhet). För egen del får jag medge att det har en viss charm.
Som skildring av keltisk historia och tradition: intressant! Lärde mig mycket som jag inte visste (det vill säga, från noll kunskap fick jag åtminstone en liten inblick) och mycket jag inte ens visste att jag skulle vara intresserad av.
Som mysterieroman: riktigt snyggt jobb här Björn Larsson! Läsaren hålls på halster och får hela tiden veta lagom mycket om den stora gåtan för att vilja veta ännu mer. Dessutom är tempot rask och händelserikt vilket gör boken till en riktig bladvändare.

Né infamia né gloria per la lettura estiva di questo romanzone.
Passate le prime 50 pagine sono stata tentata di smettere, mi ha spronato a proseguire la curiosità sui riti celtici della setta esoterica chiamata appunto "Il cerchio celtico". Alla fine sono rimasta delusa perché è risultato tutto molto molto vago mentre, invece, l'autore si è profuso in interminabili descrizioni di manovre veliche, per me un po' noiose.
Tre stelline che do ai libri al limite dell'abbandono.

Was für eine Überraschung - ich fand den Klappentext interessant, hab gehofft, dass es gut ist und bin sehr, sehr begeistert.
Obwohl ich keine Seglerin bin, hat mich das Buch gefesselt und die Beschreibung des Segelns an sich und der Orte las sich grandios und spannend. Die Geschichte um die Kelten hat es abgerundet.
Ich bin tatsächlich auf Google Maps „mitgesegelt“ und habe die Routen und Orte nachverfolgt 😊
PS: ich habe direkt nen Segelkurs gebucht… Danke!

Non sono mai stata su una barca a vela e non sono mai stata in nessuno dei luoghi nominati in questo libro ma mi sembrava di essere con i protagonisti sul Rustica, navigando nei glaciali mari nordici tentanto di risolvere il mistero che perseguita Ulf e Torben.
Larsson ancora una volta non mi delude.

J'ai trouvé ca un peu long et j'ai du me forcer à le lire, mais c'était sympa! Le côté nautique était très intéressant et original... je me suis juste beaucoup perdue dans les lieux visités et dans l'intrigue en général... un peu décevant donc !

I read Bjorn Larsson's book about sailing along the Celtic fringe of Europe about a month ago. He calls that the non-fiction companion to this murder mystery novel. The book starts out very similar to the other book with the main boat used, "Rustica", the same as Bjorn Larsson's own book. The narrator meets a Scottish man named MacDuff while taking a late night ferry between Sweden and Denmark, From him, he gets involved in a tale that takes him on a sailing trip in the middle of winter from Denmark to the western side of Scotland. as he tries to find out more about the Celtic Ring, an age old and current mystery. As he and his friend, Torben, sail across the North Sea they feel their lives are in constant danger but they don't know who from and who they can trust. This is an interesting book, but did not capture me like its non-fiction companion, FROM CAPE WRATH TO FINNISTERRE, did last month for me.

I know that this is a bad confession, but for me the most exciting part of this thriller was the on-going debate about whether the emergence of the Baltic States was going to be the catalyst for the re-emergence of small historical States as Nation-States, independent of the countries that had absorbed them.
In the book, the maintenance and diffusion of the historic minority languages and cultures of these places was mentioned as being ‘impossible’, after years of campaigns such as ‘Not Welsh’. Nowadays the UK and Eire are investing small but significant amounts of money and effort into re-introducing these languages into their traditional communities through a variety of mediums from compulsory Welsh Language GCSEs through to state-funded television series teaching Scottish Gaelic and a Cornish dictionary. Despite the French government’s continued refusal to ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (les salauds !), music festivals such as Yaouank allow Breton culture to be passed on to the next generation, if only through folk music.
The necessity of using violence to gain rights and respect à la ETA and (old-skool) IRA is earnestly discussed. As is the question about whether or not these areas will ever be allowed to gain independence and, if they were, what the chances of their survival would be. What with the Scottish Independence Election coming up, it made the questions and debates in the book a lot more relevant and exciting than I expected them to be.
Oh! And the discussions about the creation of a pan-Hiberian political and trading union for Wales, Eire, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Brittany and Galicia were rather different from the ones I’ve come across over the last couple of years.
Sorry, that’s a bit of a digression but this book really got me excited about minority languages and the question of regional/ national independence. Not what the author set out to do, I’m sure, but that’s the sub-plot that got me really excited.
Note on the translation: George Simpson has rendered effortlessly the text into perfect British English that made for a lovely read even if it did feel a little foreign at times. Weirdly, his grammatically correct English felt a little alien to me- but that’s probably because I’m used to reading translations that have been done in American English, which have a different flavour (and different grammar and orthography).
Overall
This was a good book that has introduced me to the Mariner’s Library and fiction that’s set on boats. Apparently it reads like a modern version of Erskine Childer’s Riddle of the Sands, so I know what my next ‘sea mystery’ is going to be. Hopefully Riddle will be a little tenser than The Celtic Ring, but it’s set in WWI, so it should be pretty darn politically exciting too.

A book from my to-read stack that I finally got to. Started off promising (all the hints in Pekka’s logbook!) but didn’t quite deliver. The conspiracy could have been exciting (I actually have an interest in the underlying ideas, and the author references one of my favorite books) but remained vague. The supposedly strangely alluring female character came across as — just strange; described as physically attractive, sure, but not fleshed out to the point where you can see (rather than be told) that man after man would be willing to risk everything for her. The sailing jargon is authentic (and the main character would definitely use it) but a bit much for me. Extra star though for making me look up all the cool places mentioned in the book, especially the Corryvreckan.

Das Buch war ok, und vor allen Dingen mal eine neue Thematik für mich. Allerdings fand ich es nicht ganz so mega-spannend. Ich musste mich zwar beim Lesen auch nicht quälen, aber mir hat irgendwie so der Spannungshöhepunkt gefehlt. Sicher, es gab oft lebensbedrohliche Situationen, aber so richtiges Mitfiebern wollte bei mir nicht aufkommen. Vielleicht lag es auch daran, dass ich nur eine 'Beziehung' zu dem Erzähler aufgebaut hatte, nicht aber zu den anderen Personen und deshalb auch nicht mitzitterte, wenn die sich in Lebensgefahr befanden.
Vom Segeln versteh ich natürlich auch nischt, aber man hat ja zumindest gemerkt, wann es gefährlich war und wann nicht. :-)

I did enjoy this book, although at times I found the style a little dry. Of course, it had been translated from the original Swedish, so maybe that had something to do with it.
The book has a fascinating plot which revolves around the mysterious Celtic Ring, and the atmosphere provided by the descriptions of sailing and remote Scottish anchorages certainly adds to the drama. Mix in some elusive villains, a beautiful woman who is under the threat of death, and a charismatic but ambiguous Scotsman and you have an intriguing marine thriller.
The book has a fascinating plot which revolves around the mysterious Celtic Ring, and the atmosphere provided by the descriptions of sailing and remote Scottish anchorages certainly adds to the drama. A great thriller mixing mythology and magic with detective work. A great book for sailboat and sea lovers. A great book for Ireland lovers. A great book for those who love the dark Scandinavian thrillers. I read this many times and always enjoy it. I read it as I was travelling in Ireland.
