WORTHY PART 2 When Sif is kidnapped by Frost Giants, Odin instructs Thor to stay and guard the palace. But given his feelings for Sif, Thor would travel to the gates of Hel itself to save her... and he just may have to!
Thor now wields the mighty Mjolnir! And, against his father’s instructions, sets off to Jotunheim to confront the Storm Giants and rescue Sif. But once he faces Rugga, the Giant King, he learns the giant traded Sif to Hela for immortality. Now Thor must face death once again, if he has any hope of returning Sif to Asgard.
I think this was my favorite issue of the series. Not only is this a really good Thor story, but we get to see him wield Mjolnir for the first time! He picks it up quickly and does a great job in his battle with the giants. I was kind of amazed he didn’t have too much of a learning curve! The battle sequence is very fun, but mostly we get to see the arrogance and confidence of Thor really come through here. Gone is the anxious teen, here we only see the god that Thor will become later in life with the bravado to seek an audience with Hela. Good stuff!
Tocchini has some sparkling moments of art this issue! There are some amazing panels of Thor and Mjolnir - walking through Asgard or in battle - that are just compelling. There’s one page of the battle scene where the action was a little muddled and unclear, but it still got the point across that Thor was kicking ass and taking names! Solid issue for art!
Fun issue that showed the development of Thor and how Mjolnir becomes part of him.
Thor travels to the Storm Giants' home and learns how to fly and fight with Mjolnir. He beats the Storm Giants and talks with their king Rugga, who has given Sif to Hela in exchange for immortality. Thor climbs to the highest peak and calls Hela to challenge him. She appears, with Sif in hand, and accepts Thor's challenge.
