Fairfield Orchard #2

Spiced Apple Winter

Rate this book
Welcome back to Fairfield Orchard, where apples and romance are ripe for the picking...

Actor Tyler Fairfield is Spencer Hollow’s only home-grown celebrity. To Brianna MacDougall, he’s a friend who became a lover over the course of one wild night in New York City. They both agreed it was a mistake—so why can’t Bri forget? Maybe because Tyler makes her feel like the only person in a crowded room. Or because his kisses melt her like warm caramel over ice cream. Tyler back in town means temptation 24/7. Bri has more than enough on her plate producing a holiday play and running her family business, but this new secret fling can’t last (right?) so she intends to enjoy every minute of it...

Bri’s like no woman Tyler’s known—including Gabrielle, his former costar. Fairfield Orchard and Tyler himself are part of the plan to rehabilitate Gabrielle’s image, but scorching encounters and tender moments with Bri make Tyler wish he hadn’t signed on. He’d trust Bri with anything; she’s his heart and his home. But proving it to her may bring more drama than either of them bargained for...

I was totally surprised I was unable to connect with this story or it's characters. But as always, Ms. Cane's writing is flawless. I really enjoyed the "Valentine Valley" series, so hopefully her next release will spark my interest.

Tyler and Brianna have been friends over the years, having grown up in the same small town and attended the same schools, and with Bri being a close friend to Tyler's sister, they are comfortable and at ease with each other. Until Brianna went to New York where Tyler was living, and being drunk had a one night stand with him. But when Tyler comes home to help out with rebuilding the orchard to its former glory, and taking a break from his acting career. At first its awkward between Tyler and Brianna but the chemistry between them is powerful and they know it can only be temporary. Brianna is helping running her fathers business since he has recently been suffering from Alzheimers. At first Tyler and Brianna act upon their feelings and the chemistry that has been building between them and soon their secret fling turns into a battle of trust and love.
Plot and Story Line
A Spiced Apple Winter is a wonderful sweet and romantic winter love story that only Emma Cane is capable of. I found I fell in love with this book way more than the first book. I really liked seeing these two people stumble their way thorugh to their happy ever after which wasn't easy. At first we see how awkward their relationship is considering the unplanned one night stand. Tyler is a famous actor, and Brianna is just a small town girl that is content with her life. What I liked seeing was the flirting and sneaking these two do in their relationship. Even though they both feel a connection, its Brianna that acts upon it first. I liked that even though she knows there are risks involved with being with Tyler, she wants to live in the moment and take a chance. It was quite fun seeing other members of the family come into play and maybe some hints for future books *grins*. I think what I loved most about this book was the building of chemistry and the charm of the setting this author describes. I felt that she balances it just right, doesn't give out too much detail but just enough to make you want to live at Fairfield Orchard and had me craving for some spicy apple cider.
The Cover
What a gorgeous cover, I just love the scenic setting here and the way that the winter scene sets a nice tone and I love the cool white and lavender colors that are used.
Overall View
A Spiced Apple Winter is a warm and cheery romance that is an endearing love story that leaves you with a smile on your face.

I'm a sucker for book themes where the family comes together to say the family either business or land. I can't help myself. I enjoy them.

A Spiced Apple Winter is like that. In the series each of the kids come back home to help out with the orchard. This is the second book in the Fairfield Orchard series. Up this time we have Tyler and Brianna story.

From the first book, these two called to me. I'm not sure why. I think it's because Brianna is going through something that only others that have to deal with it understand. Because of that, she's working twice as hard as she has in the past.

Now Tyler is dealing with a bunch of his own crap. He doesn't have a job at the moment and even though he promised to help out the family he keeps thinking about going back home and finding a new acting job. But to be honest with you I don't think that's what he really wanted.

Tyler is a very complexed character. He's flawed but not as badly as he thinks. He has something that many people suffer from and learns to live with. I think him having these issues are what make him such a great hero. Everyone has their junk.

Just when these two look like they are going to make a connection again Gabby walks back into their lives, well more like Tyler's life since she's friends with him. It adds a little twist to the story that I enjoyed.

It takes a while but Tyler finally gets a clue on what he wants in life and who. I think you'll really enjoy reading their story and you'll want to read the next book in the series, The Apple Blossom Cafe. I know I have to start it soon. For those who enjoy small-town romance with family drama, you'll really enjoy this series.

Amanda's review:

Emma Cane is one of my favorite authors and I love to read her books. Her new series is off to a good start and the second book continues the story of Fairfield Orchard. Spiced Apple Winter is the second book and it is Tyler and Brianna’s love story. Tyler Fairfield is an actor by trade and is the small Virginia town’s celebrity. He is taking the first turn and a 6 month commitment with his twin Amy, to manage the orchard and bring it back to life somehow. In book 1 he had difficulties with the job but he is more comfortable with himself, now that he is taking medication for his newly diagnosed attention deficit disorder. He is also finding it hard to keep his friend Brianna/Bri in the friend zone, considering the night of hot sex they had a few months ago. They both are pretending to not remember since there was alcohol involved. Both Tyler and Bri hope that one night won’t spoil their friendship. Little did they know that it was the spark that lit the fuse!

Bri has always had a crush on Tyler and is being realistic about how things are between them. She knows that he is eventually going back to his acting career after his six months are up and she is staying here. She is also has a full plate with work and family. Between managing her family’s general store and helping take care of her father with Alzheimer’s, she decides to help the production of a holiday play. I liked Bri because she is a doer and a fixer. She puts others first and tries to fix their problems. Her mother had to point this out to her to take time for herself and try to have some fun. Tyler sees this as well and makes it a point to help out with the fun. Before you know it they agree to have sexy fun with no strings attached with the time he has left. They had to keep it a secret considering Tyler was Gabrielle’s ‘boyfriend.’ There were a few twists but it the end they did what felt right and let the gossip take care of itself.

This friend to lovers’ story has a bit of drama and a whole lot of chemistry to make this an enjoyable read. But it also has its serious moments tackling the horrible disease Alzheimer’s and how it affects family and other loved ones. Tyler thinks of Bri’s Dad as a second father and wants to spend time with him too. The story also touches on alcoholism and how that also affected all the Fairchild’s. This story makes it real for me because we don’t live in a vacuum and life can be complicated. The comfortable transition that Tyler makes with his life choices just brings the story to a nice conclusion. I like reading romance series starring a big family and Fairfield Orchard fits the bill perfectly. I highly recommend Emma Cane’s new story if you are a fan of contemporary romances.

A Spiced Apple Winter was a fun, heartfelt romance that focused on the complications of being stuck somewhere between friendship and love, and about how family issues combined with living in a small town can make everything more intense.

Author Emma Cane creates some lovely communities for each series she offers us and I thought she did so well here describing the beauty that was Fairfield Orchard. And this being set in autumn as it morphed into winter, she made it extremely easy to picture the gorgeous changing of the colors across the Blue Ridge Mountains in Spencer Hollow, Virginia. That alone made it a perfect seasonal book. But it was even more interesting as it was paired with the bounty of the family apple orchard and the Fairfield siblings’ new business venture with cider.

I *loved* the first book in this series, so I had high expectations. I liked this one, but, eh, it was a little too hollywood where I was looking for countryside bliss. Good boy next door story, but not my favorite.

I love that small town, family focused romances and Emma Cane has brought together family, childhood friends, loss, angst, a touch of scandal and plenty of self-examination in this Fairfield Orchard series. Fortunately for both readers and characters, the moments of reflection are stepping stones to action and forward progress, and no one ever gets stuck in navel-gaze mode. The second book focuses on Tyler, the other half of the Fairfield twins, stepping in and up to run the family orchard while his sister and parents are off enjoying a change. Tyler has been out of Virginia working as a soap actor, quite successfully until the demise of his character. Now with no work, and feeling the weight of family obligation, he’s joined up with his sister Amy to run the orchard and find new ways to present their product and increase the bottom line.

Brianna McDougall is a good friend of Tyler’s sister Amy, and her father was an important figure in Tyler’s life when he was younger and his father was fighting his own battles with alcohol. The proverbial over-achieving good girl as a kid, Bri has never really left town despite having the degrees and ability to do so. She preferred to stay and work in the family market, supporting her parents. But her father is newly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and Bri’s world has been rocked. Always the one to jump in and fix things, she’s determined to keep everything working as smoothly as possible while spending as much time with her father as possible.

These two are absolutely adorably frustrating! There is a connection that is palpable when they are in the same room – Bri’s had a crush on Ty forever…. And Tyler is interested in the one woman who doesn’t fawn all over him – offering up the goodies. He want’s Bri – but knows that his life is too unsettled and he’s determined that leaving after the holidays to resume his career is the best move. But he’s enjoying co-managing the orchard with his sister, and the unfocused, scattered, can’t wait to get out of town teen that he was is not who he is now.

The interplay between these two is adorable: their no-strings relationship is a deep and dark well that both are convinced is what the other wants. And they are so busy trying to make decisions that ease the path for everyone else, no matter the detriment to themselves. And NEITHER one speaks their true heart until the end.. ok – I love a little tension and the will-they-or-won’t-they as much as the next person – but this was SO obvious to everyone BUT them. The changes that both were experiencing: Bri with her father’s illness, her sister’s returning with baby and no boyfriend, and Tyler’s decisions about the Orchard and the frustration with other siblings who had yet to actually step in and take time to do as promised, plus his own career choices. Oh there is SO much going on. And it all falls together perfectly, with plenty of smiles and everyone finding a new outlook on their place in the world as Amy’s wedding is fast approaching.

Cane manages to weave several different threads together: the sibling relationships, the romance, the town and the nods to the history of the orchard all in a town that is redefining itself in the 21st century without really losing that sense of community that is so integral. With a cast of characters, primary and secondary, that fill out the story and give a sense of richness that is palpable, this is becoming a favorite series for me. I can’t wait to see Noah’s story, or more about Bri and Ty, and Any’s wedding should be something to be remembered.

I purchased a copy of the title for my own library. I was not obligated nor compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Posted on What I'm Reading

This is a the first time I have read an Emma Cane book. I have read other stories by this author written under Gayle Callen, and I enjoyed those stories. However, there is something magical about small town romances and all the trouble they can stir. Yet, there wasn't a lot of trouble in A Spiced Apple Winter. Nope, there's just these two people who have been friends together forever, and one night had a little fun. Now both parties are trying to forget, but can't quite forget.

Tyler Fairfield has come home to do his duty for the family farm. He has a set time limit, and eventually would like to get back to his life in New York. At the same time he needs to keep his distance from a certain red-head, this makes for some awkward encounters. Now Brianna MacDougall has a lot on her plate, and she's trying her best to keep cool. Again there is an awkwardness between her and Tyler. Sleeping with friends changes things. Of course, Tyler thought the best course of action is help another friend and pretend to be in a relationship. This should help him keep his distance from Brianna.

Talk about things being complicated. However, they seem to start to workout as the story progresses. However, it wouldn't be much of a story if there wasn't a little scandal. Anyway, A Spiced Apple Winter definitely put a smile on my face. I love the small town story, but it wasn't loaded with drama. Yes, there is a happy ending. By the time I finished the story, A Spiced Apple Winter definitely had me yearning for more. Do I plan to checkout the backlist Emma Cane books, oh yeah. A great balance of romance, trouble, story.

A Spiced Apple Winter is a sweet romance with a friends-to-lovers plot that is credible and appealing. Brianna and Tyler are likable, sympathetic characters whose romantic relationship develops slowly and convincingly, based on a deep friendship with a long history that includes ties with one another’s families. As one of Amy’s best friends, Brianna grew up at home with the Fairfield clan, and Brianna’s dad served as a second father to Tyler when his own dad’s alcoholism led to parental failures. The Gabrielle complication could have turned this story into a clichéd mess, but Cane has her leads behave with maturity and a trust based on their knowledge of one another.

The details about orchard life, about the MacDougall store, and about the Christmas play give Spencer Hollow a substantial realness and make this more than just another small-town romance. The secondary characters make the novel a richer read. Amy Fairfield and Jonathan Gebhart (At Fairfield Orchard, Book #1) play their parts without appearing to wave “Read Our Book” signs. The MacDougall family’s coming to terms with Mr. MacDougall’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis is authentic and poignant. Gabrielle is not a spoiled, conniving Hollywood bitch, but a talented actress and a genuine person.

I loved Cane’s Valentine Valley series, and the Fairfield Orchard series promises to be just as good. If you are looking for a small-town romance with a freshness and charm that make it a standout in a subgenre often plagued by sameness, I definitely recommend this book. The Fairfields are a big family, and I’m looking forward to stories from the other siblings. I’m also hoping to see more of Gabrielle and Spencer Hollow’s reclusive playwright. I’m hooked on this series!

Oh boy, this read had it all - friends-turned-lovers, regret, angst, happiness, redemption...Bri is a strong female lead who's dealing with her dad's Alzheimer's and managing her family's general store. She is a sweet woman, always looking out for everyone, but she's not so sweet that it turns you off. She strikes that hard-to-manage balance of gently flawed (wanting what's best for everyone, even sometimes to the detriment of herself, but never a martyr).

Tyler is just a generally good guy. He's had everything handed to him on a platter except for his personal flaw...And this was my only issue with the book. Tyler doesn't want to tell Bri about his learning disability because he feels it'll make him feel closer to her.

Yeah. That was a stretch.

But, aside from that, this is a story about two good people who are really great together. I enjoyed how they spoke to each other like adults, so the only roadblocks to their relationship were those that they perceived might hurt others (such as the paparazzi exposing their affair while Tyler was supposed to be publicly dating a former costar).

This was an enjoyable read, and the ending had me all smiles. Four and a half stars.

I always enjoy books by Emma Cane and Spiced Apple Winter was no exception. The main characters have enough drama going on in their lives to make it feel real, even if Tyler is a celebrity (I'm not a huge fan of celebrity characters).
Tyler has come back to help run the family orchard at a time when his acting job has disappeared. Bri has always had a crush on him and really tries to avoid him at first. She's also trying to help her family at this time. They keep getting thrown together, as is prone to happen in small towns, and it soon becomes evident that Tyler is also attracted to her. Just as they are ready to act on the attraction, a famous actress comes to town and asks for Tyler's help. It complicates things like crazy. Bri knows that Tyler is going to leave again, so why should she take any relationship seriously? If Tyler decides he wants more from her, will she be willing to give it?

Spiced Apple Winter by Emma Cane was a good read! I loved how it spanned from Fall through Christmas in Virginia, so you get the seasonal sprinkle throughout the book. The romance between Brianna and Tyler was cute and I was rooting for their happily ever after. Brianna is a hometown girl and Tyler is her childhood friend that got into acting and moved to NYC. He’s been home in Virginia for a few months to help out with his family’s orchard and cidery, and the more time he spends the harder it gets for him to imagine leaving. Brianna takes the lead to put on the greatest Christmas play this year with her Dad, who has progressing Alzheimer’s. She has a star script written by a real author in town, a celebrity playing the heroine, and of course, help from Tyler. There will be bumps along the way, but the end is sure to satisfy and make you believe in love. Happy Reading!

I enjoy this series (Fairfield orchard) Tyler is returning home to Spencer Hollow Tired of his acting career and re-evaluating his decision to move to New York. Bri has always had a crush on Tyler and having him back is torture. Tyler has some major decisions to make when he's offered a major movie role. Set in beautiful New England during the fall Apple season this is a great addition to the series and I look forward to more books from Ms. Cane.
