A Ghostly Reunion by Tonya Kappes
Book 5 of the Southern Ghostly Mystery series. Paranormal cozy mystery. Cliffhanger.
Emma Lee see ghosts. This time it’s Jade Lee Peel, a high school nemesis. And Jade Lee doesn’t want to leave so isn’t helpful in finding clues to her death.

A bit of mystery. A bit of humor. A lot of snooping and help from the boyfriend cop.
Quite a twist at the end leading to an emotional cliffhanger.

Off topic but connected:
A funny background story between this author and author Jade Lee aka Kathy Lyons where they both agree to include the other in a book, hence the dead Jade Lee. Not sure “dead” was the goal!

When I got the invite to read this from the publisher, I was instantly intrigued. I do love murder mysteries and I'm a sucker for anything set in the south.

I liked Emma well enough. She seems smart and she's likable and friendly. She's also loyal to her family. I was hoping for serious
chemistry between Emma and her boyfriend Jack Henry, but the scenes between them were lukewarm at best. There are also a lot of secondary characters, all with double names and I struggled to keep track.

The plot was interesting, but not captivating. I did want to find out who did it and I didn't expect the reveal. But the slight build up led to a rushed ending and sort of fizzled out instead of satisfying.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the book, but it lacked a spark I was really really hoping for. I didn't see the southern charm or the spunky attitude. However, the set up for the next book is something I wasn't expecting and I'll definitely be reading that one.

**Huge thanks to Witness and Edelweiss for providing the arc free of charge**

My English review

I always spend a great time with the Southern Ghostly Mysteries series by Tonya Kappes and I look forward to each new volume to discover the further adventures of our dear Emma Lee Raines. And I must say that her nerves are strained here!!!

Our heroine is preparing a high school reunion with all the people who were with her when she was younger, this means both good and bad ones, starting with Jade Lee Peel. This woman has always messed around by calling her unpleasant names and making fun of her continually. But now Emma has changed and is determined to stand up to her this time, especially since she does not seem to have changed and wants to get her old boyfriend back, Jack Henry who is now Emma’s. But her diva role was quickly cut short when she was found strangled and Emma is then obliged to assist the young woman all day long. Finding her murderer becomes her mission number 1 to finally get rid of the girl!

As I said, it is as always a good time to follow Emma in her investigations. It must be said that her trauma business starts to grow, and she must be very careful with others so that they do not believe her crazy when she speaks in the wind. Something very difficult when Jade, the girl she hated, now harasses her without helping either. It was interesting to understand what had happened to Jade and it’s true that the mystery is pretty well done, I didn’t suspect a thing. However, it is quite sad to see the evolution of the relationship between Emma and her sister deteriorating gradually without understanding exactly the reason (well not completely).

I was quite surprised by the end of the novel which I absolutely did not expect and I must admit I am a little sad while waiting to read the 6th volume.

It all started when a large plastic Santa fell off the roof and knocked Emma Lee for a loop. She starts seeing the ghosts of murdered people. People in town thinks she’s gone round the bend when they spot her talking to something that isn’t there. She’s getting used to that.

What she’s having trouble with is the newest ghost, Jade Lee, a prom queen diva with no manners and an ego as big as Texas, who has her eyes on Emma’s man, the sexy Sheriff Jack Henry Ross. Emma wastes no time diving into the case, more then ready to send Jade on to greener pastures. But Jade has other plans and the fun begins.

I live in a small southern town and every time I dive into another book in this series I feel like I’m welcomed with open arms. Tonya nails it with her descriptions of a southern town. Her character’s are the perfect blend of eccentric, opinionated, charming, and did I say eccentric. LOL And the mystery is rib ticklin’ fun and as sticky as a humid afternoon.

Keep ’em coming, Tonya. This southern gal would love some more, please.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. My review is voluntarily given.

A high school reunion turns into a nightmare for Emma Lee when the high school mean girl becomes her latest ghost client, her granny gets a taste for being a reality TV star, her sister works for a rival funeral home now, and her newspaper pal is framed for the murder- pretty much life as normal in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky.

A Ghostly Reunion is the fifth installment in this hilarious paranormal cozy mystery series featuring a heroine who runs a funeral home and sees ghosts who have been murdered and need help crossing to the other side.

The Ghostly Southern Mysteries invite the listener to give the over the top, light-weight murder mysteries a chance. Emma Lee is an amusing amateur detective who fumbles and bumbles her way through her ghostly cases with the help of town sheriff and boyfriend, Jack Henry.

Each book provides a good murder mystery, but it is paired with lots of quirky small town, family antics, and a sweet, slow burn romance. In this latest, Emma Lee has to face the desertion of her sister to a posh funeral home and the arrival of a high school mean girl who used to rule the school, date Jack Henry, and make Emma's life a misery. It's not so much who would kill her as who didn't have a reason to murder her.

Tiffany Morgan is a delightful narrator for the series and does a fab job of southern drawl and charm, comedic timing, and a variety of vocal inflections for the large cast of characters. I get lost in her storytelling quite easily.

All in all, I had a great time listening in and find the light and fun quality perfect when I want easy entertainment and a good mystery to puzzle over. It is a good match for those who enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a humorous paranormal/supernatural story with some quirky characters, check out A Ghostly Reunion and the Ghostly Southern Mystery series by Tonya Kappes.

Emma sees murdered dead people, after being conked on the head by a plastic Santa. Her home and the family business are one and the same, Eternal Slumber Funeral Home. People of the town thinks she’s a loon, but really she is a Ghost Whisperer. I loved the TV show, so any book that reminds me of it, is high on my reading list.

Emma is planning her ten year high school reunion and her least favorite person deigns to grace them with her presence, Jade Lee Peel. She epitomizes why we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

This light, ghostly murder mystery is filled with humor and quirky characters with large personalities. Occurring in a small town, we still have plenty of suspects and it takes a while to figure it out.

Sooo…if you like some laughs with your murder, you will want to add A Ghostly Reunion and the Ghostly Southern Mysteries to your reading list.

A KILLER ending and I can hardly wait to read more.

My Thoughts
Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky may be a small southern town, as far as size goes. But make no mistake, it is quite big on charm, personality, and paranormal mystery shenanigans. Don't believe me? Just ask Miss Emma Lee Raines. The young, pretty, and very busy proprietor of the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home, and part-time sleuth.
Oh yeah...and did I happen to mention that "she sees dead people"?
Yep. Just like that cute little boy in The Sixth Sense.
Only these dead people need Emma Lee's help to cross over, and she's not exactly running all over town letting the populace know that she can in fact "see dead people".
No. It seems that Emma Lee is quite content to let the general public and her grandma believe that she has gone just a little south of her mental balance beam, and now suffers from a condition not so lovingly referred to as Funeral Trauma.

Who knew that a little ole' thing like a high school reunion would lead to the murder of its prom queen turned reality star, one Miss Jade Lee Peel. The owner of the town newspaper as the lead suspect, and Emma's "Funeral Truama" stuck in the upright and on position?
Why none other than Emma Lee Raines of course...and all y'all lucky folks that have the pleasure of reading this story. Bless your hearts!

Authoress Tonya Kappes invites readers into the world of Emma Lee Raines for a 5th time in A Ghostly Reunion. As such, both new readers, and those well acquainted with the series find themselves presented with a well balanced cast of the quirky, kooky, and just down right fun characters and circumstances which make for a relatable and compulsively readable tale.

While Miss Jade Lee Peel's untimely demise may be a bit of a foregone conclusion. (I mean...with her tombstone being on the cover of the book and all.) The over the top persona that this snuffed out starlet brings to the table, both in life and in death is well worth the read. When you add Emma, grandma Zula Fae, and Emma's sister, Charlotte Rae into the mix.
Priceless.

This mystery builds its reader loyalty by allowing the reader to understand and gain an affinity for the people in the story. Not just the stars of the show. The whole entire town. It then becomes so very easy to slip right into any given scene, and feel as though one is right at home. A very handy tool at times when the action may slow or the plot may get a little thin.

Another very smart and particularly well executed element of this story is the blending of Emma's personal and professional lives. The ebb and flow from one into the other is seamless. Making Emma a very well rounded character, and giving her readers the full view of how her sleuthing impacts all areas of her life.
This focus on Emma does backfire at times however. At times taking the spotlight away from her dead client. Leaving parts of their story to either be glossed over or not explored at all.

Another drawback to having such a seemingly fixed array of memorable characters. (I say seemingly because this is my first foray into this series.) Is the ability to deduce that the murderer is always going to be someone coming in from the outside.
This bit of formulaic writing is well covered in charm, wit, and characters. But it does bear mentioning nonetheless.

In short. This is a great cozy for the reader looking for unforgettable characters, a fun escape, a bit of mystery, and a whole lot of heart.

I thought this was good but it felt lacking in some places. I always got excited joining Emma on her adventures in solving the murder case but she didn't do too much of that. At least, not as much as she typically does. And her attitude was super bitter. Though I can figure why, it just didn't make for a totally pleasant time.

It was good and as per the usual, I had NO idea who the killer was until the end! Surprise, suprise! I totally gasped.

Imagine the class reunion you’re planning includes your bullies from high school. Now one gets killed. She’s been nasty to everyone. Since your job is to help murdered souls pass on, you now have to help your enemy. As you investigate her life you learn how complex she is and her ideal life isn’t as ideal as people think.

This made for a fun audiobook with a twist ending.

I love this series! I have read it in order but I believe you could get away with jumping in anywhere. These are written in a way that you might be curious about a previous book you haven't read but you wouldn't be completely lost.
This book finds Emma Lee fixing to attend her school reunion. If that isn't nerve wracking enough, her nemesis is a celebrity! When Emma Lee starts hearing Jade talking without seeing her, we know something is up. Emma's Funeral Trauma only affects her when someone is dead. Was it a murder or a suicide though? If trying to find the answer to that doesn't keep Emma Lee busy enough, Charlotte Rae is determined to have Jade's Funeral at Hardgroves, (and is trying to get her hands on an heirloom from Eternal Slumber). Will Emma Lee be able to stop her? Or will something else happen?
I had such a good time with this book. I laughed out loud several times. Fortunately my dog loves this series too and was laughing along with me. She thinks Emma Lee is a hoot, especially when her Funeral Trauma sets in. By the time I got to this one, most of the folks in Sleepy Hollow were my friends. I find that reading these books is equal to sitting in the porch swing, sipping sweet tea and listening to folks talk. I read this one in one sitting without noticing the time flying by. There isn't much racy, (language, sex, violence), about it so it's fine reading for just about anyone in the family who has a hankering to hang out with a dead body or two and try to figure out who did what, (and what was just gossip).

The blurb for this book really does say it all. Emma Lee gets to spend some quality time with her HS nemesis, something I am sure none of us would be jealous of her for.
While she deals with the drama of Jade’s death and turns the HS reunion into a more of party to celebrate Jade’s life, she and her grandmother are also dealing with Charlotte’s departure from their family business. I love the closeness that Jack Henry and Emma Lee are developing. Also, with the ending of this book, the next HAD to follow immediately!

When I began this episode of 'A Ghostly Southern Mystery,' I thought wow, maybe there aren't any ghosts talking in this novel and the author is switching things up...then, a beauty queen/reality show star who was formerly a citizen of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky winds up dead!

Not only does Funeral director, Emma Lee Raines have to try and treat this ghost as though she liked her...Hmmn...but also she has to try and win the actual funeral. Poor Emma, everyone thinks she has 'Funeral Trauma' as the kindly old doctor announced, that is excepting her boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross who knows the truth of her abilities to see, talk with, and touch ghosts that are needing their murders solved prior passing over.

The local newspaper owner/reporter, Fluggie decides that if She doesn't want to be convicted wrongly, she and Emma Lee better work together. So, the trio work, in their own special ways, and then...

The ending was a hoot. I want to be a spoiler but I won't. Trust me, I had an inkling but still was really surprised. Now to wait for the next volume to be published...patience is needed. A terrific read as each individual novel has been.

“A Ghostly Reunion” earns 5/5 Jeweled Homecoming Tiaras!

Planning the ten-year high school reunion, Emma Lee was conflicted to include the now well-known reality television star, Miss Popular Cheerleader Jade Lee Peel, who in high school dubbed Emma Lee “Creepy Funeral Home Girl.” Sleepy Hollow seems all ‘gaga’ about their hometown star with her television crew entourage, and everyone’s falling over themselves to get an endorsement. However, a ‘mishap’ at the Best Friend’s Spa throws Jade Lee into one of those ‘celebrity’ meltdowns, and Emma plans to make a statement to get her to stay away from her boyfriend. But, her grand plans are scuttled…Emma Lee hears a familiar voice…another ‘Betweener' client needs Emma Lee’s talents…Noooo, not her!

This fifth book in the Ghostly Southern Mystery series is just as entertaining and engaging as the previous books, so fans will be delighted. But newbies will not be left out because the story provides enough little bits to bring them up to speed and encourage them to check out the whole series from the beginning. Tonya Kappes, a Southern Belle herself, shares with us her southern culture of manners, neighborly attitudes, and Granny’s southern sweet tea. The mystery, ok, murder, is clever and develops slowly—cathartic for those of us that had a ‘mean girl’ issue in high school. It gives you the time to invest in the characters, enjoy their lives, holler at some of their stupidity and selfishness, and enjoy the ins and outs of a murder investigation.

Emma Lee Raines owns and operates Eternal Slumber Funeral Home in a small Kentucky town. She's your average, everyday undertaker with one minor exception. She sees ghosts. Specifically, ghosts of murder victims who can't cross over until the murder is solved, and the perpetrator is arrested. This time she's tasked with solving the murder of her high school nemesis Jade Lee Peel. With help from boyfriend Sheriff Jack Henry Ross and her granny Zula Fae, Emma Lee successfully helps Jade Lee cross over. The book ends with a major plot twist and wonderful setup for the next chapter of Emma Lee's story.

Tonya Kappes has the ability to write in many different genres, ranging from contemporary romance to paranormal mystery/romance and cozy mysteries. Her books consistently give readers great stories filled with quirky, likeable characters. I discovered Kappes' books about a year ago (I'm not sure what took me so long), and she quickly became one of my favorites. Although I received an advance reader copy of this book--which I voluntarily reviewed-- I have and will continue to purchase and enjoy her books.

I LOVE this series and this book only added to my enjoyment. Emma Lee is an amazing main character, who is extremely likable. She is intelligent and always loyal to her family. There is still potential there for a relationship with Jack Henry, but it seems to be developing s-l-o-w-l-y. :)

It is always entertaining to read about Emma trying to hide her conversations with the dead from other people in her life so that they don't think she's gone completely round the bend. This time, with the deceased being someone who always harassed her in life--and continues to do so in death--it's even more entertaining.

Once again, the reveal was a complete surprise, but one that was totally logical. I can't wait for the next adventure with Emma Lee.

**I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author, with no expectation of a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.**

A Ghostly Reunion by Tonya Kappes is hilarious, hot, and mysterious. Inside this cleverly written plot, Tonya Kappes keeps readers hooked. I found myself wanting to go after the annoying ghost myself but also felt sorry for her. The main character, Emma Lee, is strong, real, and a perfect heroine. Her arc enemy boils her up into a jealous rage...even in the afterlife. Funny how a ghost can still make an alive woman jealous...

Emma Lee sets up a high school reunion and one class member comes bringing chaos into the small hick town. Full of Baptist church goers who love to gossip. Jade Lee Peel was once the queen bee and has already gotten on people's nerves. Not too long after a row with one of the former classmates is the now beauty star found dead. Already a suspect is at hand...but is that really the killer and if not who is?

I loved the romance that brews up continuously between Jack and Emma Lee. Their kind of love is adorable and good. I enjoyed following their scenes...and talks. I really loved that Jack doesn't think his girlfriend is crazy. Unlike Emma Lee's grandma and the doc. A Ghostly Reunion has humor, spice, and adventure. Murder too. The classic whodunit is evident in this engaging tale. Exciting, well-developed, and truly a page turner. Tonya Kappes has captivated me with this novel of hers. I couldn't stop reading it. The characters have a way of luring readers in and keeping them...overall, I highly recommend this paranormal mystery to all.

The fifth in the series: I like the characters, I like the humor, I like the ghosts, & I like the stories....

Emma Lee & her sister Charlotte have taken over the family's undertaker & funeral parlor business.... Charlotte on the business side & Emma Lee on the undertaker side, but at this point Charlotte had decamped and is now working for a "Legacy" Funeral Parlor in Lexington

When Emma Lee is hit on the head by a falling plastic Santa Clause and she begins seeing the ghosts of people her family has buried... unfortunately all those she sees have been murdered and it is up to her to help solver their murders so that they may cross over.

.

The local girl gone celebrity, Jade Lee, has come back to town for her 10th high school reunion, which is being put on by Emma Lee. The once Homecoming Queen is going to film a new reality show: Girl from Hick Town makes good.

Not only was Jade Lee nasty mean in h.s., calling Emmal Lee "Creepy Funeral Girl", but she is even meaner & nastier upon her return... Only someone doesn't like her nastiness and a series of accidents befall her...

Things get interesting as Jade Lee appears to Emma Lee just before one of the many planned festivities asking for help still dresses in a kimono, turban & house slippers; dead as a door nail.

A light, fun, & entertaining read

Emma Lee Raines is organizing her 10-year High School Reunion. One of the people attending the reunion is her old high school nemesis, Jade Lee Peel. Shortly after arriving in town, Jade Lee has an altercation with a person in an older car for parking "too close" to her Mercedes in front of the Higher Grounds Cafe.

Jade considers herself a prima donna and has a film crew following her around. She is rude to just about everybody she has any contact with, but seems to be totally oblivious to her conduct. Jade Lee also wants to rekindle her relationship with Jack Henry Ross.

When Jade Lee turns up dead, it is up to Emma Lee and Jack to find the killer. Unfortunately, with Jade Lee's behavior, there is no shortage of suspects. There also seems to be some question as to where the funeral will be held, Eternal Slumber or ...?

Who killed Jade Lee? Can Emma and Jack solve the mystery and help Jade Lee cross over? Will Emma Lee handle Jade Lee's funeral?

What will happen to the reunion plans?

The story has sufficient twists and turns to keep you guessing all the way to the end, with a final twist that will leave you looking for more.

I received an ARC copy of this book and elected to provide this honest review.

Emma Lee Raines is doing yoga in the gazebo in the middle of town square in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. She sees a car pull up across the street. It is none other than Jade Lee Peck who was Emma's #1 enemy from high school. She is in town for the reunion. Emma runs the funeral home that her family started. After an accident that caused a head wound to Emma, she can see "betweener" clients who have been murdered and cannot move on until their murder is caught. Jade Lee Peck becomes one of her "betweener" clients when she is murdered before the reunion.

Sleepy Hollow is a typical small town. It has its share of quirky people, gossips and people who truly care for one another. I liked Emma Raines and her boyfriend who is the sheriff. The story moved fast and the ending was a total surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this series.

I really enjoyed this book, I love the whole idea of Emma Lee being able to see dead people and help them. I am sorry to say that I do not like her sister or her granny, but I guess that shows how good an author is when she can stir your feelings one way or another for a character.
Emma Lee is organizing her high school reunion, when her classmate Jade arrives and starts causing upheaval not only for Emma Lee but it seems the rest of the town also. When she turns up dead Emma Lee has to help find the killer because she doesn't want to deal with Jade any longer than necessary.
The mystery was excellent it kept me guessing until the end. Jade as annoying as she can be actually shows a likable side, and the ending well let's just say, wow. I will definitely move on to the next in this series.
