The Growing Season #1

A Time to Uproot

Rate this book
A Time to Uproot launches a brand new women’s fiction serial.

The day her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Ann Maywood put her promising career on hold and raced to Maggie’s side. On some level, Ann knew the battle they faced would be a lonely one, and she was right. Other than frequent rants about the injustice of their mother’s illness, Ann's younger sister, Cass, stayed on the road and out of sight. While the brilliant baby of the family wanted to help, their mother stubbornly insisted Chuck remain in graduate school at Stanford.

In Part 1 of this three-part serial, Ann expects life to return to some semblance of normal following Maggie’s death. But Ann’s career is in shambles, her lover has moved on, and her mother’s long illness has saddled Ann with monumental debt. To make matters worse, her irresponsible sister barely made it home in time for the funeral, but now her grief spirals out of control. And while her brother might be a genius, he refuses to fulfill the dreams their mother sacrificed everything to achieve. Tasked with holding the family together, Ann questions how the Maywood clan can hope to survive without the one person who always believed in them.

What an amazing story. This story is written in three books, A Time to Uproot, A Time to Sow and A Time to Reap. You cannot read just the first book, because the story does not come full circle until the third book, Part 3.

When this story opens, the Maywood siblings have just lost their mother to breast cancer.

Ann, the oldest, is the responsible one. She gives up her career, home and boyfriend to move home to help her mother. She feels it is her duty to keep the family together after her mother dies. Ann is an incredibly talented and creative photographer but her mother has never acknowledged her work because it is not what careers are made of.

Chuck, Ann's younger brother, is still in school, lives on the West Coast with his girlfriend and has plans he isn't ready to share. Chuck is unwilling and unable to share his feelings due to a traumatic incident as a child. For years he has chosen to protect himself emotionally, even from the woman he loves.

Ann's younger sister, Cass, is a train wreck. She walks around with a chip on her shoulder and blames everyone else for her lot in life. She has manipulated her mom her whole life. Now, she has no idea how to take care of herself and her life without her mom bailing her out of her bad decisions. She finally has to grow up and become responsible for herself.

This is a story of how three adult siblings come back together as a family. While each is navigating their grief and discovering who they are without their mom, they realize their own strengths and their ability to survive and thrive because of their mom. Ultimately they turn back to each other to share and celebrate their victories together.

A heart-wrenching story of great loss and how each family member copes and moves forward. Can't wait to read the next two parts!

Ann, Joy and Chuck Maywood have just lost their mother after a hard fight with breast cancer. They each dealt with the diagnosis and treatment differently, and now that they are coming together for the funeral, times are stressful.

Ann put her entire life on hold to move home and take care of her mother, and now when she should be able to move forward, she has nothing left but drama from both her sister and brother. Her promising career fell apart when she couldn't be there for assignments, her boyfriend moved on because she was no longer there, and she spent her savings to keep everything afloat while caring for her Mom.

Will these siblings be able to pick up the pieces and maintain any type of loving relationship with each other now that Maggie is gone?

The Growing Season Part 1 : A Time To Uproot
By: Leigh Duncan

The Growing Season is part one of a three part series A Time To Uproot. Leigh Duncan has weaved a brand new women's fiction series that will surely touch the hearts of many. There was times when I had tears in my eyes. A women has breast cancer and one of her children put her life on hold to care for her mother. Ann don’t know what to do after the passing of her mother. She has nothing to go back to , no life, no boyfriend, and no job . What about her sister and her brother, did they do anything to help out ? Will this family ever be back together as a family again? I can relate to this story, it brings back memories for me.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review .

This book is very emotional. Especially for myself. I totally have a connection to Ann and what she went through after her mother past away. It was my mother I took care of it was my mother in law. Just like Ann had no one to help her. My hubby and I had no one to help us but yet it was our fault instead of the illness that took her. I cried so hard reading this book. I had to put it down for a bit and then continue reading. I hope Ann's sister finally gets the help she needs. That part of the story I didn't connect with. This is another great book that is a must read by Leigh Duncan.

Enjoyable easy read

I liked this book and really sympathized with the main character and her struggles. I felt her pain on every page. But there were enough good points to keep me reading. Will most likely get the other books in the series
