Liz Mugavero has been writing stories since she could hold a pen. Before that, she would tell them to anyone who would listen (not many at the time). After deciding early on she would write books for a living, she practiced by writing bad, angst-filled poems, short stories and even a storyline for a soap opera--all by age 15. She never wavered from her goals despite all the usual questions including, “So are you going to be an English teacher with that degree in English?” or, “That writing thing sounds nice, but how are you REALLY going to make a living?”

She went on to get a master’s in writing and publishing and spent time in journalism, PR, and presently, corporate marketing and communications. And she’s confident this writing thing IS the way to make a living.

Aside from writing, she loves animals (has a houseful), the beach, reading other writers’ masterpieces and Starbucks coffee.

Originally from Massachusetts, she lives in Connecticut with her family, but has every intention of getting back to the Bay State sooner rather than later.

The Gourmet Pet Food Mysteries is her first series.

In book five of Author Liz Mugavero's Pawsitively Organic Mysteries, Stan Connor is baking up some new organic treat recipes for dogs and cats in anticipation of the opening of her new Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie and Cafe. Her sis, Caitlyn, unexpectedly shows up with her six year old daughter, Eva, and plans on staying awhile since her life's pretty much in chaos. Stan and Caitlyn's mother, Patricia, is engaged to be married yet still trying to control both her daughters lives. More turmoil erupts when Tony Falco, the groom-to-be, is missing at his own extravagant engagement party and his assistant, Eleanor Chang's life is abruptly extinguished in an upstairs bathroom at his rented mansion. Now's the time to roll out the red carpet for a plethora of suspects to line up on. Stan doesn't know her mother's fiancé that well, however, Stan knows her ex, Richard Ruse, is sure not a killer. Matters become very dicey when Stan gets too close to sniffing out the crazed murderer. There is a seriousness to this storyline dealing with the heartbreak of substance and alcohol abuse and addiction. This winning pet cozy mystery series is fast-paced, fun, and satisfying for readers. I love all the darling pets, and there are several!

I have always enjoyed my visits with Stan Conner's animal family and friends, this book did not disappoint. The books keep getting better. The engagement party for Patricia and Tony is in full swing when Stan's group arrive. Stan is startled to discover several of her co-workers present along with her x-boyfriend, Richard. Patricia is unhappy as Tony is not around. A murdered body is found in the master bathroom. An immediate clamp is out on the incident. Richard is arrested as the guilty party. Jessie is suspended from her job. Stan is convinced that Richard is innocent and begins to explore the facts of the case. If course, all the dogs and cats play an important role. Nutty gets a special part. I highly recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A cute, fun cozy mystery with recipes for making your own healthy pet treats. I think this will be even better once Kristan finally gets her organic pet treat shop up and running. There were no surprises with the murder aspect but the story is entertaining enough and fans of cozies will want to read this. Enjoyable and I plan on reading the next one.

This is how you write a cozy series. All aspiring cozy writers and some 'professionals' (I'm talking to you, Joanne Fluke) take note of a master and how it is done. You have to read this series in order because there are references to past situations that you don't want to miss. Each book has gotten better than the last and Ms. Mugavero really hits it out of the park with this one. She has created a town and characters that ring as authentic, people and places with lives that take a few steps forward and maybe a step backward, but they are all interconnected in a believable way. She isn't suddenly pulling a rabbit out of a hat that has come out of nowhere. If I were so lucky as to attend a reading or book signing, I would love to know if when she began this series if she had the general arc set in her mind. It doesn't feel like she is suddenly throwing something in that hasn't been planned for a while. I hope this series continues, at least, until the day I die. I cross my heart and swear to die, but in my humble opinion, Liz Mugavero should be giving other writers lessons in how to conceive and write a series.

Custom Baked Murder is the fifth installment in the A Pawsitively Organic Murder mystery series featuring Kristan "Stan" Connor the organic pet food baker living in Frog Ledge. Stan is happily enjoying living with hunky boyfriend and local bar owner, Jake McGee and getting ready for the grand opening of her Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie and Bakery which will coincide with Christmas.

Stan isn't looking forward to the engagement party for her mother Patrice and town Mayor Tony Falco, as she and her mother still don't see eye to eye. Even though Patrice is supposed to be a silent partner along with Jake in Stan's new business, Patrice wants the shop designed her way and that is driving Stan crazy. To further complicate things, Stan's sister Caitlyn appears on her doorstep with her six year old daughter Evangeline "Eva", needing a place to stay until her divorce is settled.

Stan isn't pleased to discover that her ex boyfriend Richard Ruse and several of her former co-workers from Warner Financial including nemesis Eleanor Chang are in attendance. Stan tries to make the connection and soon learns that Mayor Falco has hired Eleanor to be his advisor. With so many people including her own daughter Monica despising her it isn't a surprise that Eleanor is found dead at the party, what is a surprise is that Patrice's engagement ring is shoved in the woman's throat. When Richard is taken into custody for suspicion of murder Stan decides to help clear his name, although he's a cheat she knows he isn't a murderer.

This series continues to get better with each installment. Rescuing dogs and cats is a personal mission for the author and it's nice to see how she weaves her love for animals into each book. The loveable dogs and cats will definitely put a smile on your face and so will the townspeople of Frog Ledge. Looking forward to many more adventures with Stan and her family.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am more than happy of offer my honest opinion.

Kristan "Stan" Connor is happy in her new life in Frog Ledge, Connecticut. She is busy trying to open her new pet patisserie and café with financial help from her boyfriend Jake and her mother. Therein lies the problem. Patricia Conner still tries to take over Stan's life. Stan tries to maintain a relationship with her family, but it isn't easy, especially when her sister Caitlin and niece Eva show up on her doorstep with a love sick celebrity chef hot on their trail. Stan agrees to attend her mother's high society party to celebrate her engagement to Frog Ledge Mayor, Tony Falco, but if she has known that some people from her former life, including her ex, would be at the party, she would have stayed home. Then Caitlyn discovers a dead body and Stan's ex, Richard, is accused, Stan knows she has to get to the bottom of this murder. Sure, no one liked Eleanor Chang, but was someone mad enough at the overbearing, power hungry woman to kill? Where was Tony during his party and should Patricia really be marrying him?

This series has improved greatly since the first novel in the series. Regretfully, the library doesn't have the other novels in sequence but I hope they continue to buy this series because I am enjoying it. This can be read as a stand-alone or as part of the series. It does contain mild spoilers about past plots. I was thrilled that this one has more pets and more recipes to try. Now I just need a pet to try them out on!

The plot was great. Though I did guess early on who, I wasn't positive and there were other mysteries to solve. I couldn't put the book down. It was great for a rainy day. Stan managed to figure out the truth and was savvy enough to have someone with her when she went off to investigate. She did ask a lot of direct questions that could have gotten her in trouble.

Stan is more likable than I remember and less stupid. She's happy where she is and more relaxed. She has become a part of Frog Ledge and learned to fit in and love it. Her relationship with Jake also makes her happy. He's a great guy after all. Jake is a very swoony hero! He loves Stan, all their animals and his family. I love his devotion to his sisters. I'm glad he seems to have worked things out with Stan's friend Izzy. The animals are adorable! There are now 4 dogs and 2 cats. Each has a distinct personality. My only complaint is they didn't have enough to do.

The quirky locals mostly take a backseat to Stan's family. Her sister Caitlyn has an interesting personality development. I could have done without the drama of her romance. Her daughter Eva is so cute. She's an animal lover like Auntie Krissy. It's very sweet and adds some light touches to a murder mystery. Stan's mother is who she is and Stan seems to have to terms with that. Patricia is difficult but I didn't want her to be hurt by Tony if he was trouble. Brenna, Jake's younger sister, is very sweet and kind. I like how she can stand up to her siblings without fighting. Here we meet her boyfriend Scott and learn more about him. He's a great character. Char is here in all her southern glory, taking care of Patricia and another guest at the B&B. I can't help but love her. Izzy appears briefly but isn't really a part of the story.

The locals who play the biggest role here are Tony, the mayor and Jessie, the cop. Tony may be a shady character. He's complicated and I don't really care for him. Jessie has lost some of her tough edge. It's nice to see her out of uniform here and trying to let her hair down. As I get to know her, I like her more. A new character, Francie, is also a Frog Ledge resident. She's very kind and motherly and loves to bake. I did have reservations about Stan hiring her without references but small town people just help each other like that I guess.

The biggest supporting roles are played by outsiders from Stan's old corporate world. Eleanor Chang, the victim, was completely awful. She was horrid to everyone, especially her daughter. Eleanor was a world class witch with a capital b. She didn't deserve to die though. Her daughter, Monica, earned my sympathy. I wouldn't blame her for killing her mother. Stan's ex boyfriend Richard has some unbelievable character development here. Stan's former nemesis Michelle also appears more nuanced than Stan ever realized, much like Stan's own sister Caitlyn.

This murder mystery series gets better by the book. I wish I could have read the other books in th sequence. I would recommend this to any cozy mystery lover.

Stan’s mother is engaged to Frog Ledge’s new mayor, and the pair are throwing a big engagement party. However, the groom to be isn’t there. Instead, Stan is running into several people she is less than happy to see again from her days in the corporate world, including her ex-boyfriend. The night gets worse when a body is found upstairs. The police quickly make an arrest, but something seems off. Are they trying to cover something up?

Since the last book took place out of town, it was wonderful to be back in Frog Ledge and spending time with our favorite characters. The author has really built a sense of community, and I love how she is growing Stan, the others characters, and their relationships. The downside of that is the murder moves slowly in the beginning as the sub-plots that help with the community building are front and center. But the mystery takes center stage in the second half, offering us several viable suspects and some great twists and surprises.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

I am a dedicated fan of this series and the extremely talented Liz Mugavero. I have read this series more than once, it's a go to series that I turn to when I am looking for a comforting story. This book was intense!
Stan Connor is one of my favorite cozy mystery characters. She is portrayed as a fun loving, dedicated and loyal friend. She brings a smile to my face whenever I read a book in this delightful series.Frog Ledge, Connecticut seems so real that I would love to visit and meet all the wonderful and colorful characters that Ms. Mugavero writes about.
In this book, Stan is ordered to attend her mother's engagement party. Her mother, the sophisticated Patricia, is engaged to Mayor Tony Falco. When things go awry at the party, it falls to Stan to make things right.
I was kept on the edge of my seat from beginning to end and I hated to end such a wonderful story.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided to me by the publisher via NetGalley.

I finished Custom Baked Murder by Liz Mugavero, last night. This is a really great story and I loved the mystery. Not at all how I thought this would turn out and a mystery I believe you will all love. Two cats, 4 dogs, a great boyfriend, an overbearing and well meaning mother, unexpected house guests and a cast if characters to get to know and love this book has great charm. This is a new series to me and yet is book 5! Out December 27th this one to include in your winter reading list for sure. I also loved that the main character is a woman named Stan, so creative and memorable

Another humdinger of a book by Liz Mugavero, Stan is now living with Jake (4 dogs and 2 cats), the plans for the new shop are going well (although as an investor Stan's mother seems to think that she should have input a LOT of input into the planning), oh and as it is the time for the official engagement party for Patricia and Tony Stan's sister and niece have turned up.  There are a lot of people at the party, some of them Stan is happy to see others not so much, ex co workers and her ex boyfriend and then the evening takes a turn for the worse with no potential groom and a dead body!

It was great to get back to the small town and even nicer that Stan's sister and niece show up and start repairing that relationship. Stan seems to have the perfect life with a great boyfriend, great pets, great friends and an expanding business but at her mother's engagement party and old co-worker is killed. Stan needs to get to the bottom of this to make sure her family is safe.

From the very beginning of the book, this fast-paced mystery is full of charming pets and an entertaining protagonist, Kristan “Stan” Connor. Stan is preparing to open her Pawsitively Organic Patisserie and Cafe in Frog Ledge, Connecticut and has three short months to put it together. She’s also struggling to juggle her overbearing mother, Patricia, (who is also one of her investors), along with her flaky, spoiled sister who decides to move herself and her six-year-old daughter in with Stan. Fortunately, Stan’s live-in boyfriend, Jake, is a very understanding guy and does all he can to support her. But things go from bad to worse when a former co-worker of Stan’s is found murdered at Patricia and the mayor’s engagement party. When Stan’s ex is arrested for the murder, she knows he’s innocent and decides to start finding answers since it appears the local police are hiding the truth.

Even with Stan’s whirlwind problems and schedule, she is still a very loyal, caring person, both towards humans and animals. She has a very contentious relationship with her distant, snobbish mother but wants more. She has also been slightly estranged from her sister so when she shows up on Stan’s doorstep it provides an awkward moment. But Stan steps up to the plate and works on helping her sister and niece out, providing room for growth and the chance to mend their relationship. I enjoyed seeing the changes that came about in their family dynamics. The mystery is satisfying and there is a subplot theme of drug abuse and addiction that adds to the depth of the story.

Stan’s new shop will sell organic pet treats and Liz Mugavero provides several pet recipes at the back of the book. I like that all her treats are human-grade and can be enjoyed by pets and humans alike. I tried the recipe for Blueberry Biscuits which was developed by The Big Biscuit in Franklin, Massachusetts. These whole grain treats are lightly sweetened with vanilla Greek yogurt and blueberries and are a healthy way to spoil your favorite furry friend! My grandpuppy, Piper, certainly loved these treats and gobbled them down as fast as we could feed them to her!

I willingly provided a review after receiving an arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I loved this book! It was a nice change to read about a family trying to learn how to get along. The mystery itself was really good, although I did figure it out pretty easily. Courtney and Kyle were absolutely hilarious. I was laughing during every scene they were in.

Custom Baked Murder by Liz Mugavero is the fifth book in A Pawsitively Organic Mystery series. Kristan “Stan” Connor is working hard on getting everything ready for the opening of her shop, Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie and Café, in three months (in December before Christmas) in Frog Ledge, Connecticut. Stan is running late for her mother’s engagement party when her sister, Christine shows up at her home with her daughter, Evangeline in tow. Christine has left her husband, Michael and wishes to stay with Stan (like she has a choice in the matter). Stan is really running late now and quickly changes for the party. Stan is going with her boyfriend, Jake McGee (who owns McSwigg’s). The four of them end up arriving an hour late to the party (Stan was hoping they could skip it altogether). Patricia Connor, Stan and Christine’s mother, greets them (with a comment about their tardiness), but her fiancé, Tony Falco is not present. Patricia failed to tell Stan about some of guests she invited (people she would like to avoid). Richard Ruse, Stan’s ex-boyfriend, along with some of her old co-workers including Eleanor Chang. Tony, the town’s newly elected mayor, hired Eleanor to be his “executive coach”. Eleanor has an abrasive personality, and she seems to make enemies wherever she goes (she is particularly hard on her daughter, Monica). Stan is upstairs with her sister, Caitlyn. Caitlyn stops to freshen up in the ladies room and lets out a scream upon entering the room. There is Eleanor Chang strangled with a scarf with Patricia’s diamond ring between her teeth. Richard Ruse ends up being the main suspect when he stumbles out of the woods in a disheveled and drunken state. Stan will not let Richard be railroaded for a crime he did not commit (just because Tony wants everything wrapped up quickly and quietly). Stan sets out to find Eleanor’s killer and clear Richard’s name. Things are made a little complicated by Christine’s ex-lover, Kyle McLeod arriving in town. He is determined to woo Christine and win her back. Then there is the matter of Patricia and her meddling in Stan’s shop design. Stan knew it was a bad idea to let her invest. Life is never dull in Frog Ledge. Join Stan on her latest adventure in Custom Baked Murder.

Custom Baked Murder is full of quirky, fun characters (even the animals have great personalities). I found Custom Baked Murder to be an easy and enjoyable book to read. I like the small-town setting and various townspeople. There are some definite laugh out loud moments as well as some “oh my” areas. It was nice to catch up with Stan’s family and friends in Frog Ledge. I am happy to see Stan’s relationships with Jake, Patricia, and Caitlyn developing over the course of the series (and especially in Custom Baked Murder). I give Custom Baked Murder 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). I found the murder to be one that could be quickly solved by the reader (or an avid mystery reader who loves to solve the puzzles presented in the books). One clue is the key to solving the murder (it’s like there is a big, neon arrow pointing to the killer). There are other small clues in the book that will help the reader discover the culprit’s identity. I wish the mystery had been a little more complicated (more difficult to figure out the killer’s identity). I found the two words “long story” repeated frequently throughout the book. I am also curious about Stan’s trust fund that was mentioned again in Custom Baked Murder. I did not understand why Stan did not tap into this money to finance Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie and Café. Why did Stan need investors (Jake and Patricia)? It is mentioned that Stan wanted to live on her own (working) and not rely on her trust fund (I am curious). If you enjoy reading well-written, humorous cozy mysteries with entertaining characters, then read Custom Baked Murder.

What a great cozy mystery this was. I started to read the book thinking I would read a few chapters and come back later to read more. To my surprise I really tried to put the book down but it was so good I had to keep reading. I loved the name of the town called Frog Ledge, Connecticut. What a cute little town it is with shops that are welcoming and people who are like family. Well maybe not everyone seemed like family but you will see who I'm talking about as you devour this incredible book.

Kristan or "Stan" as she goes by is getting ready for her big store opening. She has been busy perfecting recipes and desiging the store with help from her mother. That is another story all on its own but we must focus on this mystery for now. Her store will have specialty treats for animals and I love how the author incorporated the need for K9 bullet proof vests and animal shelters in the story. I love animals and I feel in love with the dogs and cats right away. I must say there are some personalities going on with these pets. They make for some fun moments.

I absolutely adored Jake as soon as I read how compassionate and caring he is. Stan has definitely found a good guy and I hope their relationship continues to develop. He runs a pub but always makes sure he has time to be with Stan. Do I hear wedding bells in the future?

Speaking of wedding bells there is a big shindig happening with Stan's mom and Stan's presence has been requested at the party. Stan's mother is marrying the mayor and they are having a grand gala to have the engagement ring blessed. I thought Patricia, the mom was kinda distant and a bit snotty but perhaps she is just wondering why her fiancé hasn't shown up for their party. Did I mention that Stan's sister Caitlyn is staying with Stan? Well off to the party everyone goes. There are quite a few people at the party that Stan would rather not be around and wonders why her ex co-workers are there.

When there is a scream from upstairs the action takes off in this quirky mystery. A woman who really didn't have a friendly disposition is killed. I did have to laugh at all the suspects there were because they could easily fill a living room . When there is an arrest Stan is convinced the person is innocent. Why is she so determined to clear this person's name? The killer for me was easy to figure out but I did enjoy reading about how Stan and her friends join together to help prove someone innocent. There are hints throughout the book who the killer is but I thought the author brilliantly showed them in a discreet way . Overall you are in for a treat with this wonderful story that is funny and has a way to keep readers entertained till the end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from The Great Escapes Book Tour. The review is my own opinion.

Review:

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Stan is a hard worker, a good friend and an animal lover. She gets along with almost everybody, except for her mom and sister. But in this book, she gets a better understanding of her mom, and her sister makes a breakthrough of her own. I thought this showed growth of the characters and that is always a good thing.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there, visiting Frog Ledge, Connecticut, and enjoying my visit. I would like to travel there, but in between murders.

The author is also very talented in building suspense with the written word. There was tension building from when the murdered victim was discovered. With many twists and turns, and a few red herrings thrown in for good measure, I was not able to pick out the killer until it was revealed at the end.

I really enjoy this series, and this book was no exception. I would recommend this whole series to anyone who enjoys well crafted cozy mysteries. I am looking forward to the next book already.

This review was previously published on NetGalley.

This was the first book I read from Ms Liz Mugavero and the A Pawsitively Organic Mystery series and this fast-paced cosy-mystery was a joy to read.

Stan Connor lives a peaceful life with her handsome boyfriend Jake Mcgee, ready to open her Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie and Bakery when her life is turned upside down. Not only she is forced to attend her mother's engagement party with the Mayor Tony Falco, she receives the unexpected visit of her sister Caitlyn and her daughter Eva whom plan to stay for a while. As all of this wasn't enough, a old co-worker is found dead and Stan's ex is accused of the crime. Now it's up to Stan to solve the murder and make things right.

There are several aspects I enjoyed in this story. The first being the wonderful connections and relationships that Stan has with her family and friends. It serves as a reminder that even when life gets crazy, we have people that we can truly count on to have our backs and to helps us in a moment of need. The second thing, is Stan herself. I found myself smiling over her character, she's funny, compassionate and truly sees the good in people. Plus, her furry friends help too.

The plot is very nice and engaging and the story is fast-paced. There is nothing that I enjoy more than a murder plot that comes perfectly together in the end with all the questions answered and all the loose ends tied. Even though I caught up to the murderer before the final chapter, I still liked to discover the motivation behind it. Definitely didn't disappoint.

Looking for a cosy-mystery? Take this one!

I seem to be saying this frequently but it is true, Custom Baked Murder is my favorite book of the series. I loved that Stan has really settled in to the community and connected with her small town neighbors. Between that and her relationship with Jake, she is much more balanced and better able to handle the chaos that surrounds her. We also see changes,in her sister Caitlyn who seems to have calmed down dramatically. I find myself totally buying into the chaos and the calms; it works. I love when a great series allows the characters to evolve!

Stan is trying to discover who murdered one of her ex-coworkers because her ex long term boyfriend has been arrested for the murder and she can not believe that he is guilty. A lot in the investigation just doesn't make sense but she isn't going to give up. Caitlyn has come for a visit while she recovers from her in-process divorce and her bad breakup with Kyle. She is the one to find a body this time and if that isn't bad enough, Kyle shows up determined to win her back. There is something up with her mother's fiance and he is acting so suspiciously that Stan can't help wondering if he had something to do with the murder. Everyone connected to the case seems to be acting really weird! With only and few months until her new store opens, she really doesn't have time for all this madness. It is a good thing she has Jake and his family to back her up.

I requested and received an advanced readers' copy of this book via NetGalley but the review is voluntary. I always review books that I love.

Custom Baked Murder is the fifth book in Liz Mugavero’s Pawsitively Organic mystery series. The storyline is well plotted and the characters well developed. This is a fast paced plot with enough twists and turns to hold the reader’s interest and keep them guessing. I highly recommend this series to readers who love well-crafted cozies.

Kristan “Stan” Connor lives in the small town of Frog Ledge, Connecticut, lives with her thoughtful boyfriend and local bar owner, Jake McGee, and is organic pet food baker who is preparing to open Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie and Bakery in a few months. Stan’s mother, Patrice, is engaged to the town’s mayor, Tony Falco, and as she prepares to attend their engagement party, which isn't looking forward to attending, her sister, Caitlyn, and six-year-old niece, Eva, show up hopping to be able to stay with her for a while. When they arrive at the party, Stan is upset when she discovers her nemesis Eleanor Chang, several former co-workers, and ex-boyfriend, Richard Ruse, are there. Stan and Caitlyn go upstairs to find a place for Eva to nap and Caitlyn discovers Eleanor in the bathroom, strangled and with their mother’s large engagement ring in her mouth. When Richard is arrested for suspicion of murder, Stan decides to help clear his name because while he may be a cheat, she knows he isn't a murderer.

I was super excited to receive a NetGalley ARC of the latest in the Pawsitively Organic Mystery series. I love this series and the author, Liz Mugavero. Book 5 continued where book 4 left off, with Stan working on starting her organic pet bakery, with the financial backing of her mother and her boyfriend, Jake. The start of this takes place in the Mayor's mansion and the murder of one of Stan's former coworkers. In all honesty, I love the characters in this series and I love seeing how they interact with one another. One thing I did notice about Stan in this book is that she seems a little bit disorganized. There wasn't as much involvement with the animals in this book as in others which I missed. The story was well-written and engaging. I look forward to additional books and additional organic recipes from the Big Biscuit of which I am a frequent patron of!

This is the first book I've read in the Pawsitively Organic series, but it won't be the last - I'm definitely going to check out the previous ones. Stan lives with her boyfriend in a small town and is working on starting up an organic pet food/treat store. When a murder occurs at her mother's engagement party, Stan and her friends investigate. This has all of the good elements of a typical cozy - delicious sounding treats, a fun set of relatives and friends, and cute pets. But I enjoyed it more than most cozies I read because it didn't have other "typical" cozy elements like a love triangle, stupid heroines that rush into danger, etc. Stan is a likable character, the mystery was good, and I think I enjoyed thinking about the store planning as much as I enjoyed figuring out the mystery.
Thanks netgalley for the opportunity to read and review the book.

A fifth outing with Stan and her posse of dogs, cats, friends, and family, proves that too much togetherness can lead to craziness. With her mother's engagement party in shambles, and an unexpected visit from her sister, Stan's life is turned upside down. To top it all off there is the imminent opening of her shop with which she has to deal. Oh, yeah..the dead ex-coworker and arrested ex-boyfriend add an extra bit of cray-cray for Stan to cope with. Yet despite all of this this delightful series reminds us that friends and family are what make life worth living and why we keep going-and that's why I'm glad Ms. Mugavero keeps going with this wonderfully original series!

This was the first book in the series I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed the characters, the pets and the town is absolutely adorable. The relationships between the characters and their family dynamics are very real and handled well. The mystery was crafted smartly and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

It was delightful, full of charm and such strong characters that they jump off the pages. I highly recommend this book to mystery lovers that are also pet lovers, and to readers that enjoy a great book in general!

It is a delight to visit Frog Ledge in late summer with Nutty, Scruffy, their purrson Stan, and friends! Fifth in the Pawsitively Organic Mystery series, it is a not-to-be missed novel in the series!

Stan’s life overflows as she works new recipes, delivers to customers, and prepares to open her pet patisserie. Her boyfriend, Jake, owner of the local pub, moved in with her and they are gently feeling their way through the relationship change. His younger sister, Brenna, is one of Stan’s employees. His other sister is Trooper Jessie Pasquale of the State Police and a good friend. Stan’s newest employee, Francie, rounds out her staff.

Stan’s mother, Patricia, rarely approves of her choices since she left the big city for Frog Ledge. Mom is living there now, however, with Mayor Tony Falco. She will marry Tony in December. She is also an investor in Stan’s Pawsitively Organic, the gourmet pet patisserie providing specialty food, treats and toys for cats and dogs. As a special surprise, Nutty, her Maine Coon, is cover cat on the latest Foodie magazine.

The party for Patricia and Tony’s engagement brings Stan’s sister Caitlyn and her daughter Eva to town. Caitlyn left her husband and plan to stay with Stan and Jake. When they arrive at the party, Patricia’s fiancé is markedly missing. Some of Stan’s least-friendly former co-workers are guests, as is her ex-fiancé Richard. Nearly as bad was her nemesis, Eleanor, who grabbed Stan’s job when she left. She works on the side as an executive coach for Tony.

A dead body is found upstairs from the party, unfortunately by a horrified Caitlyn. Stan can identify the apparently murdered woman who had what looked like Patricia’s engagement ring in her mouth. The woman’s daughter seems drunk or drugged, and runs from the party before being questioned. Tony shows up in disheveled work clothes, and the State Police confirm Stan’s ex as the killer and close the case.

I love Stan and her friends, Jessie, Nikki, Char and Izzy. Jake is wonderful for Stan; they balance each other well. The three-dimensional main characters could step from the pages to Anytown USA. Stan has an open mind as she gets to know the ‘real’ Caitlyn away from her life of wealth and prestige. There were poignant moments, including how ‘Stan wondered if Caitlyn realized the last time they’d held hands they were probably ten and seven years old.’ (pg 82) One thing that I love about Stan and Nikki are their passion for pet rescue and the needs of local pets, such as the new K9 officer.

The author introduces various facts about pet care in each novel. She is adept with descriptions, dialog, and intrigue. The plot is complex with layers of mystery surrounding the murder. There so many better suspects than Richard; Stan knows he could not kill anyone. The suspense builds throughout; Stan grows through listening to Tony and Patricia’s side of the events. There is no end of surprises! This reader could not figure out who the bad guy/ gal could be until it was almost too late; there are tense, heart-pounding moments as the suspense reaches its zenith! I highly recommend ‘Custom Baked Murder’, especially if one loves cats or dogs, humor, suspense and romance in their cozy mysteries! Liz Mugavero has penned her best mystery to date!

With a grateful heart, I received a copy from Kensington through NetGalley; as a courtesy, I am posting my honest review for which no compensation was received.

The 5th Pawsitivly Organic cozy mystery featuring Kristan "Stan" Connor and 4 rescue dogs + 2 cats. Technically, 2 of the dogs belong to her love Jake McGee, who moved in to Stan's Victorian home during the summer. Pawsitivly Organic Pet Patisserie & Cafe, Stan's shop, is opening in December, just 3 months away. She & Jake's sister, Brennan, are trying new recipes, filling orders for other establishments who sell their treats, and trying to get everything ready for their grand opening. Stan's perfectionist, snooty, ice queen mother, Patricia, is marrying the mayor (Tony Falco) of their little town Frog Ledge. Her snobby sister, Caitlyn, is going through an acrimonious divorce from her hedgefund managing husband and descends on Stan & Jake with her little girl, Eva.  Patricia has orchestrated a black tie engagement party, even inviting Stan's former colleagues as well as her ex, without consulting or telling Stan. During the ritzy affair Caitlyn & Stan discover a murder victim in an upstairs bathroom of Tony's mansion. Jake's other sister, Jessie, is a state trooper and she quickly calls for backup and crime scene techs. Stan begin investigating when the police arrest an innocent man and appear to be way too deferential to Mayor Tony.

Although this was my first Pawsitivly Organic Mystery, thanks to the author's inclusion of bits of background explanations, I had no trouble understanding relationships and such. A well written book that even includes several animal treat recipes. Characters populating Frog Ledge  were interesting and three dimensional, some stereotypes and others eccentric. While I felt that the mystery of whodunit was fairly obvious, the author salted the novel with plenty of plausible potential murderers and a few red herrings, which contributed to making Custom Baked Murder a very pleasant, interesting read. I recommend this novel to all cozy mystery readers, especially those who have or like pets. The author's love for rescue animals really comes through, which was an added bonus. Easy to read with likeable characters--both human and 4 legged.

Many thanks to the author, Kensington Books, publishers, and netgalley for providing this reader an arc in exchange for my honest opinions and reviews.

I voluntarily accepted this book for review through Netgalley

Stan is dedicated to getting her new business up and ready for the grand opening but she recognizes the need to make time for her personal life. She can not miss her own mother's engagement party, even if it is not the type of function Stan would prefer. When her sister and niece show up on her doorstep, this becomes quite the family affair. Even boyfriend Jake's family is fully involved.

Totally unexpected, and adding to the stress of the event, is a sort of reunion of Stan's former coworkers, including an old boyfriend who is acting oddly. This is just a shadow of the under current of difficult topics covered in this book. It is to the author's credit how she deals with these topics while delivering a well rounded mystery.

The original discomfort of an overly formal event shifts to the worrisome stress of a murderer among the guests, most of whom have known each other for years.
Stan gets involved because even though she may not like the person of interest arrested, she has to uncover the truth. She wants to help others if t all possible.

I love a good mystery novel. This wasn't it.
With a long list of characters and pets to remember, along with nicknames for people, this book was very slow to start and weighed down from the beginning. The characters are wooden with little character development. The "cops are stupid and can't solve anything" attitude was disgusting to see. The main character "Stan" is trying to multitask to the point of being ineffective at everything.

The plot is filled with improbable scenarios, in an attempt to create or heighten tension, but falls flat. Example: huge problem in this plot is that the state troopers office is twenty minutes away. In what reality do state troopers have an office in every town? They don't and it's not that far.

The last forty pages of this book was the best part, with the plot finally coming together and wrapping things up.

If you are looking for an engrossing mystery, give this a pass. There are a lot of better books out there. I will not be re-reading this one.
