Vivienne finds out that her mum wasn't her actual mum after she dies and her birth mother was a witch who gave her up for adoption to protect her from the curse on her family.

I often talk about bad pacing in books, more often than not it's too slow but this was just too fast. I had no idea what was going on half the time because it was moving so quickly. I didn't learn much about the characters but suddenly the adventure was already beginning. Ramoth seems to have the same problem that I do when I write and that is not describing things enough and not taking the time to slow things down a bit.

I was provided an e-copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and Exit 80 Publishing for making this title available to me.

This review can also be found on Bookshelves & Paperbacks.

The Curse of the Bruel Coven by Sabrina Ramoth follows the story of a young high school girl who, after the passing of her mother, learns that she is adopted. With the help of her best friend Savannah, Vivienne is determined to find who her birth mother is and why this adoption was kept secret from her, only to learn that her birth mother is part of a coven. Meaning Vivienne is a witch, and a bloody powerful one at that. With this knowledge and a surprise kidnapping, Vivienne must come to terms with who she is all while learning to use her powers so she can save someone from the clutches of evil.

If this book were a person, I would grab her by the shoulders and yell, “Slow down! What’s the rush?” in her face. This book is incredibly fast-paced- too fast-paced, I might add. Within the first ten pages, we know Vivienne is adopted and she is also well on her way to meet her birth mother. Note that we do not know anything about Vivienne, or her relationship with her adoptive family, so the revelation that she is adopted does very little with regards to drawing empathy from the reader. From there, things take off at an alarming pace. Every second or third page gave me a new scene, a new dilemma to work with. The effect was disarming; I was left disoriented, and much of the book’s events passed by in a blur without me finding time to settle down and take it in.

Because despite the storyline having an immense amount of potential, Ramoth needed desperately to give her novel some padding. As of right now, I felt that I was reading a bare-bones skeleton of a much larger piece. It read a lot like, “and this happened, then this happened, now this is happening.” Ramoth needed to slow down and give me the little details that were more than just plot. This book, while entertaining when it comes to plot, was missing the depiction of the other elements: characterization was virtually non-existent, themes of family, loss and love were obviously there but not explored at all. I still do not know who my protagonist was: I knew the facts, but who was she? No clue.

This book is perfect for people who enjoy very fast-paced, plot-driven stories. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. Characterization is the first and foremost thing I look for in a story; if the characters are underdeveloped, chances are I will be skimming most of the book.

From the moment I started to read this book I knew I was in for a real treat and I loved every single moment of this book. Vivienne is a young adult who has tragically lost her mom and lives with her grandmother. She unexpectedly stumbles upon a secret that overwhelmingly changes not only her life but how she sees the world around her.

This author's creative and enlightening writing style swept me away into the magic of the past and the present, of good versus evil and of course witches. Unexpected twists and turns that keep you in this well weaved story line with beautiful and strong characters and I look forward to reading the next installment. This is a book that I will be recommending to everyone.

This book was so fun! The characters are so dynamic and the plot left me wanting more with every page! Well paced, easy to read, and so descriptive of New Orleans that I want to book a trip. I really hope the author writes more soon because I'm hooked!

I totally binged read this book in one sitting! It was so good! Witches, New Orleans, and curses…..yes please! Vivienne uncovers who she really is and must embrace her new found power to help break a curse.

From the story to the characters, this book held and kept my attention. I just had to know what would happen next! The author transports you into the magical world of witches and other paranormals. Reading this makes me want to visit New Orleans! I enjoyed the author’s writing style and I hope there’s more to come. I give this 5 stars.

"From North to South and East to West. Show us the path to our request."

This was a cute story about a young girl discovering she is a witch. But it was a bit too close to a certain series that was on t.v. and a whole series but another author. I know witch stories can only be so new but it just felt too similar for me to love it.

Getting to know Vivi's new family and the dynamics of the siblings, cousins and adults was interesting. Loved grandma. But I don't plan to continue the series.

I discovered that I had accidentally completed the Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge for 2020, except "read a local author" so I put my librarian skills to the test and searched for an NJ author who writes horror who is not a white, CIS male and ta-dah! found Sabrina Ramoth. The Curse was checked in at my library branch, so....fate?
Anyway, I really enjoyed this. It's like True Blood and Beautiful Creatures had a baby. A sad, grieving baby who just came into her witchy powers. Honestly, I'm not the world's biggest urban fantasy fan but I really like Vivienne and I love the Frech Quarter. This would have been fun to read while on our trip last year.
That said, is it perfect? No. I really like Ramoth's voice. I wasn't prepared to have a ton of characters thrown at me all at once, and many of them don't have time to be developed. Nemma, for example, is not the grandmother character one expects to find in a book, and I liked her immediately just for that. It's more like I can see the foundation of where this is going and I am all in.
What it always comes down to, with me, is whether or not I am in a race to get back to the story when I put the book down (because stupid life has not yet allowed me to just non-stop read) and I found myself speeding up my chores, etc to see where this was going next. That, for me, is the mark of a good read.

I've been up and down deciding which rating I should give this book and since I can't decide between a 3 or 4 I'm giving it a 3.5. The Curse of the Bruel Coven was an extremely easy read and the best way to describe it is short, sweet and to the point. It isn't very long, I finished the entire book in just about 2 hours so if your looking for a quick read to the pass the time this is the book for you. I was immediately intrigued from page 1 and stayed that way throughout the book. However, a con of this book being so short is the lack of detail and build up of the story. Our main character Vivienne has been dealing with the stress from the loss of her mother. One day Vivienne finds out she was adopted, and the reasoning behind it was so her birthmother Claire could keep her safe since she comes from a family of witches who has been cursed many years ago. The story seems to take place over a period of 2-3 days so it all happens very fast. One page Vivienne and her family are sitting down thinking of a plan and the next page the plan is in action. I definitely would have love for more pages, it holds a great storyline so I'm disappointed it wasn't longer. Regardless I really did enjoy this book, it grabbed my attention right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down.

I actually enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I don't normally read witch/vampire books but this was a great read.

Vivienne was a brilliant character who I really felt for throughout the book. I also loved how open and accepting Mira and Grand'Mere were to her.

I thought the plot was brilliant and it was really fun being in this world. My only issue with the book is that I wish some scenes had more description so you can imagine what is happening a little better but in under 200 pages, I think Ramoth did a fantastic job.

I can't wait for the next book!

Mixed feelings about this one.
I really enjoyed the idea of the story and some sections of it were really quite engrossing BUT it was badly written, not particularly well developped and repetitive.
I know this is a YA read and I'm pushing 40 years old but even if i miraculously regressed 25 years i would still be critical of the same issues, maybe even find them degrading. It feels as though the author has skipped all the filler just so she can get on to the drama. Id be happy to let my 9 year old daughter read this book and she'd thoroughly enjoy it.
The author has done a good job, in essence, of drawing the reader in; whether that's because the story lacks depth and you are eagerly searching for answers or purely because its engrossing.
I don't know if I'll be going any further in the series. I think I've got a pretty good idea of where the story will go from here.

Pretty Good

I really liked the story, but kind of felt that it was a little rushed. It was like one scene jumped to another without very much transition in a few places. It want bad enough to keep me from wanting to read the next book, but just enough to take a star off for the review.

Received from NetGalley for review.

Quick disclaimer: this is by no means a brilliantly written book, but it is fun and easy and that ultimately won me over in the end. Don’t expect too much action or character development, but it is an entertaining little read.

The Curse of the Bruel Coven centres around Vivienne, who discovers that her birth mother is a witch, and so is she (try not to cringe too hard at how quickly she masters her powers *eye roll*). It’s set in New Orleans and the descriptions and atmosphere of the place was one of my favourite parts of this book, although I wasn’t completely invested in the characters I found the setting very vivid. There’s a bunch of covens, a supposedly ‘bad’ coven, Bayous, magic shops, all the things you would expect from a quick witchy New Orleans story. There’s a pretty strong Beautiful Creatures vibe, too.

Weirdly, there is very little character development with Vivi. She’s the main character and should stand out but she doesn’t – I found it very hard to get a sense of who she was as a person and she didn’t really have a personality, she was just someone who found herself in a situation and went along with it…after a day. I can’t imagine immediately going along with a bunch of people who claim they’re witches and my family, and feeling so drawn in that I had to help them find a birth mother I didn’t know, proclaiming it was something 'I [had] to do'. Yeah, okay. I’m not sure why she was so bland as the other witches were brilliant and you quickly got a sense of their characters, especially Grand’Mere.

The story itself is a bit of an info-dump in places – lots of people and ideas are introduced really quickly which left the story feeling rushed. It’s only around 150 pages long but it could have done with more to flesh out the plot and the characters – I wanted more, more development of everything so that I could immerse myself in the story fully as there is a lot of unexplored potential. I just have to say that I found it hilarious that everyone was saying ‘gosh’, because saying ‘god’ is really so appalling in a book about witches and magic and curses. Go figure.

The Curse of the Bruel Coven is a silly, fun, and underdeveloped but ultimately entertaining read about some pretty cool witches in New Orleans. If you enjoy light hearted witchy stories I would definitely recommend you give this a go.

Secrets, Love, Magic, and a Twist!

So you start this book and think it seems simplistic. Well written no doubt, but it feels easy to follow, easy to slip into like a blanket while clutching a warm cup of coffee in your hands. And then the layers start to unfold. It doesn’t make the blanket any less comfortable, or the coffee less tasty. But perhaps the coffee gets a splash of nip. Yea!

The modern day setting is interesting and I love watching Vivi discover the secrets hidden from her. But it’s the origination of the curse and the backstory that sealed the 5 star rating from me.

Ramoth touches on some topics that I hold near and dear. I fear mentioning it here because it was such a welcome realization that I don’t want to spoil it for all the other readers. But let me just say that the backstory, set in the civil war (in the south no less), took some pretty bold stances on love. *high fives the author*

This book is good for 12/13 years and up. The modern day story is easy to follow without being juvenile, and the backstory is a full-bodied roast deep enough to interest those looking for more of a brain bender. The story layers nicely.

I cried at the end in a touching moment. I don’t do that often. Well done Ms. Ramoth! Now maybe enough of us will fan mail her to get a prequel novella! Also, when is the next book coming out? ;) I can’t wait!

Thank you to the author and to Exit80 Publishing for the arc copy in exchange for a review.

I have finished reading the book today, and I really enjoyed the story. It reminds me of the TV show The Secret Circle, but so much better. I love reading about Witches, there's so many directions it can go in and that's part of the fun. Vivi made for a believable character, she is just a girl living in a small town doing nothing extraordinary, but her world is falling down around her, as her mothers died before the beginning of the book, we come in as the readers after the event.

I was a little confused for a bit when she started meeting a lot of characters who turned out to be estranged family, due to Vivi having been put up for adoption (not a spoiler, its on the back of the book). With so many people being introduced it was hard to keep names matched with a mental picture of each person, but I got it eventually.

I really wanted to know more about the curse and about Oliver, and how Vivi really plays into it, and I'm very much looking forward to the second installment in the series.

Loved it! Wasn't sure if it would just be another retelling of another witchy story, but I actually found it to be extremely original and not at all dull. Quick read. Fast paced. The setting was awesome, well established. It was witchy, magical awesomeness.

Appropriate for any age. Double bonus.

Vivienne Davenport is a high-schooler who is still reeling after the death of her mother to cancer.  Now living with her grandmother, Vivienne looks back on memories of her mother and finds that she is adopted.  When her grandmother won't give her any answers about her biological mother, Vivienne enlist her friend Savannah to track down her biological mom.  Vivienne and Savannah find Claire easily enough, but not any answers.  When Vivienne returns, her mom has disappeared and Vivienne is let in on the secret of her adoption and the curse of her family.  She is a witch and an immortal has taken her mother in order to get to Vivienne.  Now, with a new family and new powers to figure out, Vivienne must find her mother and figure out their curse.
This is a fast-paced young adult paranormal centered around witches.  I enjoyed the premise of the story with a young woman learning about her family of witches and trying a break a curse from the past.  However, the pacing of this book was extremely fast.  This made for a quick and easy read, but I was left wanting to know more of the characters, the setting and the curse.  I'm not quite sure that I really got to know Vivienne's character or any of her many family members that she quickly acquired.  I think I knew more about her best friend, Savannah through Vivienne's eyes.  I did like the overall themes of family, purpose and coming-of-age that resounded throughout the story.  I also thought the mystery of Vivienne's opal ring and the curse was intriguing.  I would have loved to see more of a developed story line for the ring's original owner, Lisette instead of just brief flashbacks.  The book did quickly wrap up with an exciting battle, but left me wanting more.  I would definitely dive into the sequel.

Fast paced young adult book. Vivienne learns early in this book she's not exactly who she has always thought she was. Yet nobody wants or will answer her questions as she seeks those answers. I really liked this book, my negative views are how fast she throws information at us. Many characters thrown at us without an explanation of who they are, eventually we might find out, but it brings you out of the story flow. Wish it had gone a bit longer and gave us more, but I will read the next book for more answers. It does end on a cliff hanger, yet its not obvious that it is one. Lots of unanswered question, good first edition for this series.

Talk about an extremely fast paced book, that will keep you reading in the long hours of the night.
Seventeen year old Vivienne has just lost her mom, but as she goes through some of her mom's belongings she finds out that she was adopted. After locating her real mom, Vivienne and her friend set out to meet her. After the visit with her real mom doesn't go as planned, Vivienne leaves but soon finds out her mother was kidnapped.
I really enjoyed this book, the plot was fun and easy to follow. The only negative that I can think of is that the story is so fast paced, and short, that there is little time for character development. I feel this book could of benefited to be a little bit longer, but overall I still enjoyed it. This book was a great start to a series, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
I would recommend this book to any fan of paranormal books, and books about witches.

Something Wicca this way comes

What happens when High School student Viviane come face to face with a past everyone's been trying to keep her safe from. From student to coven circle leader and first born of the generation, and therefore destined for leadership, Viviane’s initiation into the family Coven is full of choices. Question is, will she make the right ones?

Reading like "Charmed" meets "Dawson's Creek", this story jumps generations, uses people places and things to make change happen. Question is, will it be good or not.

I won this book a while ago and it's been taunting my on my "to be read" like too long. Good escapist read. 4/5

Vivi is your average High school student, but things change when she searches for a baby picture for her High school year book. She finds a picture of her as a baby but the lady holding her is NOT her mom, and her mom just passed away from cancer and grandma is not talking about it.
Vivi and her best friend go searching for answers and uncover family secrets, one of them being Vivi is a witch, a VERY powerful witch, and a vampire is hunting her down to destroy her.
This was an enjoyable read, kept my interest in wanting to know how this whole curse thing started and how it still is in play all these generations later..

Memories from the Civil War show a love lost and a monster created. How does that have anything to do with a current high school senior in Thibedeau? This is an amazing story about how things can get so twisted that you never know who the good guys, er witches, are and who might be the actual enemies. Hang on tight for a great ride with lots of twists and turns, love won and love lost, and families who may actually help you be who you were meant to be.
I was provided a free copy of this book, and I highly recommend grabbing one at you earliest chance.

The writing was not the best however, the plot moved along so quickly the writing kind of fell by the way side. I appreciate this is a young adult novel - but it is up against stiff competition such as The Hunger Games, Garth Nix's Sabriel/Lirael series, Phillip Pullman et al - all of whom write young adult fiction and write amazingly well. That said, there was enough to keep me reading and I may even consider reading another in the series as clearly there will be more to come.

Once I started the book I could not put it down. For a quick read in read in 1 day. It was a good start to the series. Witches and curses go hand in hand. I love books with strong female characters. Vivienne finding out she was a witch and had a whole other family was brilliant. Can not wait to see how the series goes. How Vivi will come into and own her powers and reconect with her lost family and past life all play out.

One to remember !

I enjoyed different parts of the story as it was action packed, but the back and forth... I didn't know if I was reading an historical book or real time, like now.
If that's what the author intended, it sure worked!
I found this book difficult to put together. I don't think that I would recommend this book. Three stars for the action and adventure! Happy Reading!

Light read

I want to like this book and I do like the premise of it. The back story isn't really well defined though and so much of what happens related back to it. I suppose it's so it will draw you into the series and want to know more. In a way it did that for me but not enough to run to get the next in the series. It was a good light read for a rainy weekend.
