Even though, she's a mom now, Jessica Drew is still kicking ass and taking names as Spider-Woman! This time, she's tangling with the baddest fish in the sea: Tiger Shark! Fun Tiger Shark Fact: Did you know Tiger Shark has the DNA of both Namor, the Submariner and a tiger shark? Think about that for a second.
Dennis "Hopeless" Hallum is an American comics writer from Kansas City, Missouri who has written for Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Boom! Studios, Arcana Studio, and Oni Press.
Single mother, private investigator and spider woman, Jessica Drew's soap opera style season five really works well, balancing single parenthood and crime fighting! Also my fave ever book by Dennis not so Hopeless. A great read with a truly surprising twist in the end of the series! A Three Star, 6 out of 12 for this Civil War II Spider-woman adventure. I read the Marvel Comic books Spider-Woman season 5 #1-17; Spider Women Alpha; Spider Women Omega. 2017 read
It’s usually fair to criticize an event for disrupting a series but, because there’s really nothing going on in Spider-Woman, Civil War II don’t disrupt dick so it’s a non-issue. Things are still the same: Jess has a kid, Porcupine is her assistant/sitter, Ben Urich is hanging around for reasons, and they just kinda bumble around. She fights Tiger Shark, then she’s fighting some Wendigos up north - if anything, Civil War II gives this title some purpose and direction!
Dennis Hopeless writes a charming and readable Spider-Woman in between the generic superheroing though there’s nothing going on here that’s especially gripping. Jess investigating whether Ulysses’ visions are accurate or not led to some cute encounters but her fights with minor villains and Porcupine’s beachside tiff with Sandman were completely throwaway.
Javier Rodriguez’s art is once again the star of the show. It’s so visually striking, imaginative, creative and generally appealing, I loved the book all the more for it. And I was impressed that the fill-in artists, Veronica Fish and Tigh Walker, were able to so closely mimic Rodriguez’s style so as to provide a near-as-dammit artistic continuity for the reader.
Dennis Hopeless’ Spider-Woman remains a perfectly decent comic that would be better if it had a storyline!
Jessica checks out Ulysses's predictions to see if they are legit, then tries to process what happened to Bruce Banner. The last issue is a stand alone story at the beach. Jess takes the day off while Porcupine fights Sandman.
The Good: Spider-Woman continues to be one of Marvel's best titles even with the obligatory Civil War II tie-in. Jessica deals with her emotions over Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers in a real way.
Sorry nothing bad or ugly here, just superhero comics at its best.
World: Fantastic funky art with great splash pages. The world building is great, it's small and intimate and all about characters which I like. The tie into Civil War II is done well because of Carol and Jessica. Great.
Story: The non tie in stuff were absolutely fantastic and all about character. The small moments with Roger and others is classic. It's great. The tie in was also fantastic and that's saying a lot. The core of it being about Carol and Jessica makes it so much more. This is just a simple story and it's fun.
Characters: I love Jess and her personal voice but it's also the people around her that is fantastic. I love the banter the chemistry and wit it's great.
Dennis Hopeless continues his excellent run on Spider-Woman with this Civil War 2 tie-in. Although I don't care about the event itself, this particular volume is OK to read as a stand-alone, because you get caught up on all the important stuff as you read the comic (although beware, this volume apparently does spoil a major thing in the main event).
The tie-in is focused on Jessica's relationship with Carol Danvers, or Captain Marvel. I don't know why, but it seems like Marvel really tries to make readers hate Carol, because everywhere she shows up nowadays she acts like an insufferable asshole with fascistic tendencies. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that it was a great and emotional read, even if Carol comes off as a very hateful person.
The other two issues are just regular fun superhero adventure stories that also deal with Jessica's recent motherhood, nothing too special, but not bad, either. I am surprised by how much I like the baby storyline, but it actually works really well.
Spider-Woman keeps being one of the best Marvel titles right now, and one of the very few that are worth reading. I hope it will stay around for a while longer, because I absolutely can't get enough of Jessica Drew.
I dunno why I stopped reading this. Hopeless is a solid writer and I love Spider-woman. Any, few years late, I finally am jumping back on it.
Jess is just trying to be the best mom she can be. The first couple of issues is her balancing being a superhero and a mom. It's both funny and works well to build her character. Then we get dragged into the civil war 2 event. Now at first I wasn't feeling it but when a major moment happens in Civil War 2 and someone dies, emotions are felt throughout. The last issue is a day at the beach with Roger, Jess, and the kids.
Overall, this is pretty great. At first I didn't love the start of the civil war tie in but the emotional filled moments between Carol and Jess and another character worked really well. There's a intense battle that gave me a couple of chills. The comic also remains super fun and Jess is a fantastic main character with Roger as an amazing support cast. The kids are also adorable. Last but not least, the last issue is too cute, and I loved it.
Sad last volume is next but this was great. 4 out of 5.
Jess gets dragged into Civil War II and, sure enough, the quality of the book dips. Despite this, this book is still well worth a read; Jessica's current status quo and supporting cast are simply irresistible and a heckuva lotta fun.
Holy crap man. Just fun and more fun all around...except for that little diversion into Civil War II.
Rodriguez has a talent for making the page *interesting* to look at, whether it’s facial expressions or layouts, so each issue is just a pleasure to read. And even the fill-in artists generally have a similar enough vibe that you don’t mind so much they’re there.
The only time I wasn’t smiling was when Jess was facing off against Carol, and then doesn’t even resolve itself within these pages? We just drop the drama between best friends without some form of emotional catharsis? Weird man, just weird.
Still really strong, and the Civil War II tie-in was actually really well done. Shame we only get half a book of Javier Rodriguez artwork, but at least the fill-in artists were also quite good. I love this series, it's just so much fun and super wholesome.
Where I Loved the first volume, this one was just enjoyable.
A lot of stuff happens and there is a bit of lack of conciseness. It was a bunch of small adventures that didn't add much to each other. The Civil War II part (which I already saw a bit of in All-New Wolverine) helps a bit, as well as raising some interesting questions. But in general the plat just couldn't get near to that of Volume 1.
I do still really really like Jessica as a main character. She has a kid and a life with all its 'normal' struggles next to the superhero business, which makes her human and relatable. She is very fast becoming one of my favourite heroes.
The art style was again very nice, and even though there were some guests artists, they kept well to the style of Rodriguez so there were now disturbing changes. It isn't mindblowingly beautiful, but it is nice and suits the story very well.
This is a decent volume that is just lacking a bit in plot. I will certainly continue the series.
Jessica Drew is the anti Jessica Jones. They're both mama bear detectives with some dark history but Drew lets herself be happy and that makes all the difference.
Rodriguez' art is animated and expressive. Hopeless' writing standalone stories with bigger arcs. This series is just an all-around fun time.
Best of all, Hopeless doesn't take the obvious route of having the drama revolve around tired plots of a woman stressing out over being a good mom and a good superhero. Nope! Jessica loves being a mom. Jessica loves being a detective with superpowers. She is strict about making time in her life for both.
One of the only comics I’ve read that wasn’t negatively affected by another one of the MU’s overarching War-type thingies. Honestly, I really appreciated that the main character had practically the same view on the whole situation as I did- there’s nothing more realistic than her just straight-up refusing to get involved in that crap.
This was pretty fun!! It's all about Jess is balancing being a new mom with superheroing until it starts to tie into the Civil War 2 event (which I didn't even know there was a second one lol). Tie ins normally bother me a lot because it takes over the whole story and ruins it but actually??? This one really made it better. This volume was really a lot of just fighting random villains /monsters and not much else like it was cute but it felt so throwaway, without an actual plot.
Civil War 2 comes in with Jess helping Carol look into the visions of a new Inhuman to see if they are true. Then an Avenger ends up dead at the hands of another Avenger and things get complicated. I did have an issue with some of this though- I've loved Jess & Carol's friendship in the past but in this entire volume it felt like Jess hated her before anything even happened?? It seemed like she was unreasonably mad at her from the beginning but then saying she loved her like you sure sis?? Things don't get better between them because of the Civil War 2 events either which makes sense I guess but I'm disappointed at that.
Also the Porcupine guy is so sweet??? I didn't used to ship it (and I know they aren't a thing rip) but they were so cute in this. The beach day with the kids aww.
The art was fantastic. It switched a few times but the other artists copied the style of the first one and it was done so well. Love how colorful it all is.
The Civil War II event has to be addressed in this book, as Jessica Drew is Carol Danvers' best friend. But does that friendship automatically make Captain Marvel right in Spider-Woman's opinion?
... well if you know SW as a character, and especially if you have been reading this volume of her series, the answer is no. Of course, she will want to verify for herself and make sure the right path is being taken. She's a pragmatist, and also a little bit of a pessimist, so she takes it upon herself to investigate some of the predictions coming from Ulysses. And to his credit, SW finds that all of them were true, and they helped. But after her worst fears are realized, and what appears to be a permanent divide occurs between the two friends.
I actually thought this was one of the better tie ins as it keeps in line with what is going on in the main event, but with a tone that is much more fun.... until the end that is. And that's when the real moral conflict is shown for everyone to see. Who knows if this will affect Carol for the main series, but it was a great way of addressing the event in this series
Another good volume from Dennis Hopeless. Recommended for people who like this version of Jessica Drew.
Another great volume that balances character, action, and humour in a way that the movies could surely learn from. And Javier Rodriguez’s art? It just keeps getting better and better. Honourable mentions to Veronica Fish and Rachelle Rosenberg, whose pencils and colours complement Javier’s work beautifully and maintain a consistent tone throughout the book.
I am choosing not to rate this trade because I will always love Jessica Drew with all my heart, but everything that has to do with CW2 can burn in hell. Seriously. I hate it and it ruined all my fav character's trades.
Honestly the highlight of this entire Spider Woman trade is Jess & Porcupine doing adorable PLATONIC domestic stuff with offspring. I love it. Friends help each other and can totally raise children together!! Don't need romance for that. I love it so much. Thank you Dennis Hopeless or whoever for ending this trade with a cute not terrible CW2 issue. Thank u.
I’m glad that Civil War II was more about their friendship than all the mess of an enormous crossover title. And Porcupine is surprisingly growing on me...
The whole Civil War II story line sucks so I really don't like how it affects Jessica's friendship with Carol/Cap Marvel. I really liked that beach short story at the end though
Of all the Civil War II trades I've read so far, I think this is the first one to actually get *better* when the Civil War section began. Jessica's relationships with Carol, Clint, and (particularly) Bruce make her involvement in the conflict have actual weight - a weight that is, for once, nicely addressed in the comics. Nice job, Hopeless!
Of course, Jessica really shines when she's with her son and Roger. They make such an adorable little family, and I hope that makes more of an appearance in later books!
