A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

This was the 1st volume, right?
Because there just wasn't a whole lot of setup for the new lineup on this team. Or, at least, not enough for me.
I can see Kitty being in the mix, but what the hell was the ever-loving Thing doing floating around in space with these guys?

description

Anybody else think his 'space helmet' looks like a giant ring pop?

The plot?
Um, kinda bland.
World ending fights, alien baddies, Gamora kicking ass, Peter and Rocket trading barbs...
Sounds like a winner!
And, honestly, I have no idea how something that sounds so fun could be so damn boring. But it was. Oh God...it was.
I read this yesterday, and even after giving it time to percolate a bit, I still can't think of anything to say about it. Well, other than it was a tad bland.
shrugs

I enjoyed the last GotG run (even though a lot of you didn't), but this one just didn't do it for me. I guess I'll read the next one to see if it improves.
heavy sigh

”The entire galaxy is a mess. Warring empires and cosmic terrorists plague every corner. Someone has to rise above it all and fight for those who have no one to fight for them. Against their natures, a group of misanthropes and misfits came together to serve a higher cause. DRAX the DESTROYER, GAMORA, the most dangerous woman in the universe, ROCKET RACCOON, GROOT, and FLASH THOMPSON a/k/a VENOM all joined together under the leadership of PETER QUILL, STAR-LORD, to be the saviors of the spaceways, the conservators of the cosmos, the….GUARDIANS of the GALAXY!

But things have changed."

I still haven’t managed to read Secret Wars and the five million reboot books that Marvel launched in the aftermath, but seeing the excellent second GotG movie gave me the itch to check this out. I was a little lost on a few points. What happened to the Kree homeworld? Why has Peter ditched the Guardians to become king of Spartax after replacing his dirtbag dad. (Who is not Kurt Russell in the comics.) When and why did Ben Grimm and Kitty Pryde leave Earth and join the Guardians?

As with most things things comic booky it’s best not to worry too much about the history and just diving in didn’t keep me from enjoying the story. It’s fairly easy to pick up the flavor of what’s going on, and Bendis’ style of dialogue is suited for infodumps among the banter and fights.

Overall, I liked this line up. Having Rocket lead the Guardians while Quill is struggling to govern a planet was a nice change of pace. Kitty Pryde taking over the Star-Lord persona gives her a cool new look while still remaining the same great character, and I really liked Ben Grimm joining the team. It’s a good start to a book I can see myself reading a lot more of if they just let them have fun adventures rather than trying to shoehorn them into crossovers.

Post-Secret Wars ennui got you down? Join the club.

It’s entirely possible that my pessimistic perspective on the state of the Marvel Universe in the wake of the less-than-overwhelming (dare I say underwhelming) Secret Wars fiasco is a product of being a 37-year-old man whose been reading comics for nigh on 30 years (or maybe it’s just the product of being a 37-year-old man reading comics); I just can’t seem to get excited about anything coming out of the House That Stan Built (With a Ton of Help, Whether Acknowledged or Not) these days.

Guardians is a perfectly competent (if typically Bendisonian, with all the good and bad things that implies) book, and it’s far from the worst thing I’m reading these days. It’s solid. I enjoy it. (Contrary to what Paul says, however, The Thing makes absolutely zero sense as a team member here...if the rationale is that he used to be a test pilot for experimental spacecraft, so he belongs with a team that hangs out in space, then, by that logic, because I used to be a terrible high school basketball player, I should have been on the U.S. Olympic basketball team (I can only assume my invitation got lost in the mail).)

Does it stick a penny in my gumball machine or put the peyote in my coffee? No.

(You don’t put peyote in your coffee? Huh. Your loss.)

I’ll keep reading it—and, right now (unfortunately), that’s about the highest praise I can bestow upon a monthly Marvel outing.

(Fellow Marvelites—am I alone in this? Am I being too harsh?)

Kitty Pride and The Thing are now part of the Guardians and Peter Quill is Emperor of Spartax. I guess this all happened off page after Secret Wars. The last Kree Accuser comes to Spartax for vengeance for the destruction of Hala. You would think this would be exciting but Bendis phones this one in. Very little of Bendis's trademark spot-on dialogue here. Let's hope there is more to the next volume.

"I am not a fan of that war cry." - Drax the Destroyer

"It'll grow on you." - The Thing

"How is it always time to clobber?!" - Drax the Destroyer

Thank goodness for these Guardians. After a handful of dull or too-serious graphic novels in the last week here is a cheerful, lightweight adventure featuring that motley crew of galactic explorers. Not sure why, but now The Thing, Flash "Venom" Thompson, and my fav X-lady Kitty Pryde (who is co-opting Starlord's outfit, apparently) are riding shotgun with the team. That's one crowded spaceship!

Anyway, while the standard plot is nothing to write home about (Hala the Accuser calls down the thunder . . . stuff gets demolished, big time) this larger-than-usual group works well together. The descriptive narration for the opening scenes was a hoot, the artwork was great, and then it all wraps up with a foreboding cliffhanger. Not a classic by any means, but it was a good time all the same.

Brian Bendis’ Guardians of the Galaxy might’ve been relaunched with a slightly different lineup - Kitty Pryde is wearing Star-Lord’s clothes and Ben Grimm aka The Thing is there for no reason - but it’s the same repetitive bullshit storylines as before. A powerful alien wants to destroy things - Guardians gotta punch them ‘til they stop! Then, immediately after they stop the powerful alien by out-punching them, another powerful alien appears that they have to stop with punching! I think it’s time Bendis left this title.

Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is the reluctant leader of Spartax now that his dad has gone somewhere (maybe even died, I’m not a devoted follower of this series) which is a pretty boring development for the character. Bendis seems to take a swipe at the Star Wars prequels through Peter which was amusing: “Trade negotiations?! The taxation of trade routes?! No wonder my dad went insane. He was driven insane with boredom!” - yeah it is boring, so why’re you putting Star-Lord into this position??

The book is full of superficial changes and uninspired storylines, aka the Bendis special. Sure he can write dialogue well and Valerio Schiti’s art is decent, but this is yet another unmemorable Guardians book in a long line of them. Move along, nothing to see here!

The Guardians of the Galaxy head to Spartax to see their old friend and new Emperor of Spartax Peter Quill. Trouble has come for them though
description
in the form of a Kree Accuser who blames the Guardians for the destruction of Hala.

If that wasn't bad enough, the Guardians made a new enemy in Peter's absence that's coming to fight them on Spartax.

First off I have to say it's absurd that Peter Quill allowed himself to be made the Emperor of Spartax. He clearly doesn't want the job, but he accepted it out of some strange sense of obligation.

New Order Vol. 1 Emperor Quill shows the Guardians at their best, scrapping there way through fights they had no reason to be in. The Kree Accuser calling herself Hala was just out for blood period and she's massively powerful. Gamora's cosmic strength falls short. I've read a few of the Guardians solo comics and they all fall a bit short because they are best together. Even new comer Ben Grimm aka The Thing fits in with his rocky exterior and single catch phrase.

I'm excited to see what the Guardians do next because they are one memorable bunch.

There seems to be quite a bit of dislike on t'Interwebz for the new Guardians line-up. Could this be because most of these people only know the team from the movie and consider any deviation from the movie line-up to be 'wrong' somehow? Whatever the reason, you won't find me complaining about the addition of two of my all-time favourite comicbook characters (the Thing and Shadowcat) to the roster! Especially if it keeps Kitty away from the car crash that is the X-Men books at the moment. I just wish Lockheed was here, too...

While it's not perfect, I really enjoyed this book. I love the new line-up, I love the fantastic interior artwork by Schiti, I loved the cover art by Art Adams (you don't see much from him these days) and I enjoyed the cosmic brawling against a major threat who has me wondering if Ronan the Accuser is still around. (She calls herself the Last Accuser...) Admittedly, the knock-down, drag-out with added witty dialogue nature of the story is pretty mindless but, Hell, nobody ever accused me of being highbrow and, while I wouldn't want to read this kind of thing exclusively, I do enjoy a good brawl from time to time. I'm hoping the next volume does something a bit different for variety's sake, but this one kept me entertained.

It's a good lineup, and there's some good scenes. Adding Kitty Pryde and Ben Grimm as (apparently) permanent, full-time members of the team works a lot better than I had initially thought it would. Though in retrospect, I should have realized that Ben would fit in this group pretty nicely, and that he'd jump at the opportunity to work in space. I could really love this book, with these characters.

But the story just wasn't that great. In fact, it was way too much like Guardians of Knowhere, the Secret Wars miniseries. Which was not in any way good enough that it needed to be added to the main continuity. It's not terrible, and mostly not a bore, but neither is it very good. I know I'm being generous with my star rating, because I really do like this team as is. But damn, they need a good story.

This was quite fun!

Peter is the king of Spartax and well the thing (ben grimm) has joined with the guardians and well their first target is to defeat chitauri but when they find something dangerous they go to Spartax and meet with Pete but are attacked by HALA, the last Kree survivor and she is here for revenge and well things go bad and we follow her as she fights the Guardians and then enter YOTAT whose here to destroy them, its a big battle and everything!

Its a good volume with crazy fights and all and sees Peter returning to the team again and has the guardians face off against crazy new enemies and carries the fallout from earlier volumes and I love the way Bendis does it! Plus crazy good art and great banter between the team and a new wanted status for them. Its a good one time read!

This was a newer Guardians of the Galaxy than the one I am used too. Star Lord has become King of Spartax. The new GoG has a female Star Lord (Kitty Pryde), Drax, Rocket Racoon, Groot, Venom, and the Thing. Did someone kill the FF? Does anybody care? Not me.

I won't spoil the plot- but this was a fun read. Bendis, when at his peak, writes a very fun and exciting story. Full or dry humor and moments that make me chuckle, I truly enjoyed Bendis' Guardians. This is what the Guardians should be all about. Big, cosmic adventures with plenty of actions, great characters and awesome funny dialogue. This volume has all of that.

The artwork is also good. While nothing brilliant or amazing, this comic performs its mission. It entertains. The art is attractive and really helps the story. The humor is spot on and the Guardians come to life under Bendis' gifted touch. Are you a fan? Yes? Then read this. You will be glad you did.

Well, that was a thing that I've read. On one hand, this volume clearly is more coherent than Bendis's infamously terrible previous Guardians run. On the other hand, there is still not much of a story at all.

The setup is weird and is left completely unexplained — for some reason, Kitty Pryde is the new Star Lord. Ben Grimm is a member of the team now. Rocket is the leader. Gamora is gone somewhere. I am fine with all of these choices, but at least give us some backstory, Bendis! How did this all happen? There is literally not a word about it!

So, completely ignoring the plot, the book jumps right into action. And it practically explodes in your face right from the very beginning. Gamora falls from the sky with this kree lady Hala, who wants to destroy Spartax because revenge. They fight, they bite, they bite and fight and bite, bite bite bite, fight fight fight, and then right after that they fight another evil dude, Yotat (or something). The end. No, I'm not kidding. That's it.

There are some good things about this volume, sure. Bendis nails the characters, not that it matters much. The art is pretty. There are some funny jokes. But that is basically it, and it doesn't justify the whole volume of uninspired punching.

If you stopped reading Guardians by Bendis, either before or after the mediocre Secret Wars tie-in (and I know a lot of people did), this volume won't give you a reason to come back. As for me, I am most definitely done with this title, at least until they get another writer. I usually like Bendis, but for some reason he just can't make Guardians good.

3.5🌟

Well this wasn't so bad. Fairly easy plot to follow along with some chuckles thrown in along the way( at least I thought it was funny). This is a fairly good team they have beefed up a lot since I watch the movies. I have also watched a good chunk of the animated series with my boy. Add in Venom Ben Grimm and kitty Pride looks like a good trade on paper for Star Lord

I already put vol. 2 on hold at library. There are only 4 volume total so I see it worth following up.

Like most comic book omnibuses, this one featured amazing artwork.

Unfortunately, it also fell into the same content pitfalls as modern compilations of this genre usually do: excessive profanity, as well as occasional crude allusions.

Not only that, but...there's too much "bonus" artwork at the end. I don't want just drawings; I want a story, too!

So, this was a step down compared to the previous two Guardians of the Galaxy omnibuses I've recently read.

[Read as single issues]

I think it's indicative of the quality of this story that I can't remember what happened in most of it. That's never a good sign.

From what I do remember, this volume follows up on the eight month Secret Wars gap that sees Peter as Emperor of Spartax after his father J'Son gets dethroned during the Black Vortex. Of course, that lasts about as long as anything at Marvel these days, and by the end of these five issues he's back with the Guardians doing his usual Star-Lord stuff.

There's a badass lady Accuser from Hala to turns up to beat everyone up, and then fucking Yoltat from the horrible Guardians of Knowhere storyline shows up, and it's all just a big melee mess. I quite liked Bendis' Guardians pre-Secret Wars, but this volume has been really disappointing.

The one shining light in this volume is Valerio Schiti's absolutely wonderful artwork. I'm happy that Bendis lets him crack loose on the double page spreads quite a lot. Yeah, it decompresses the story even further, but it's lovely to look at, so it saves this from a 1 star rating.

Is this a DC comic? Because it clearly says “Volume 1” on the cover yet we join the story already in progress. Was Bendis just warming up for his job switch?

This took me nearly two weeks to read in dribs and drabs. I kept coming back to it and reading a couple pages before sighing “meh” and moving on to something else. I had to push myself to finish the last chapter (issue) tonight.

He’s trying to ape the movies, but it doesn’t quite work. There are a couple funny lines but it feels like a warmed-over pastiche of the second GotG film. The other Guardians comics I’ve read feel like this exact same story, just with different villains. Kinda lazy there.

Also, Bendis’ stuff is *horrible* on iPad. His constant use of 2-page spreads destroys readability, and he does the double thing randomly, so it constantly caught me by surprise.

Man, I’m realllly in a reading trough this week.

Ehhh... not my jam.

Story was a little disjointed and not particularly intriguing. Not enough time was spent with Quill and Kitty, and the Bendis jokes (which I usually like) felt a bit oversaturated here.

Also... aren’t Gamora and Pryde supposed to have cosmic powers from the Black Vortex? They held onto their abilities at the end of that event. So where did the powers go?

It was cool to see some old school cosmic heroes who we haven’t seen since Annihilation Conquest re-emerge.

The art was acceptable. I wish they wouldn’t try to shoehorn Drax’s movie personality into the comics. The super literal thing is hilarious and awesome in the movie... but his sudden shift in personality is a distraction here. Keep the comics comics and the movies movies!! They can be different and that’s ok!

Anyway, hopefully this run improves.

„Пазители на галактиката: Император Куил” – първи том от поредицата “Guardians of the Galaxy: New Guard” е прецедент за родния комикс пазар! I've long been a big fan of BMB on GOTG. The previous run was mostly fun with a slight over reliance on "guest stars". This one had some too but I guess with Secret Wars it was more forgivable. I really love Kitty Pryde and Peter Quill together.

I love the Guardians of the Galaxy and have done since the last Vol. 1. This volume is sadly the worst of the current run.

Now I'm not complaining about the All-New, All-Different thing. Things haven't really changed that much for the Guardians. Kitty Pryde has joined the team permanently but she was popping up a lot anyway thanks to her relationship with Quill. Kitty is perhaps even more awesome in space than she is on Earth. Also joining the team is Thing from the Fantastic Four, although quite how that happened is anyone's guess at this point. I love the Thing and he works well within the craziness of the team.

So the "new order" actually works quite well. The problem here is the plot. It's Guardians of Knowhere all over again. Hala and Yotat fight the Guardians. It's on Spartax rather than Knowhere this time and there's some Guardians background plot rather than Secret Wars background plot but essentially, it's the same story. I wouldn't be keen on that much if Guardians of Knowhere had been a good story but it really wasn't. The last thing we needed was that rubbish all over again.

It does sort of feel like Bendis has run out of ideas for Guardians. We've had nine issues now where the plot has been a big fight. Yes, it's a Marvel comic book and there should be big fights but there should be other things too. I really hope the next volume can give us something more than some fights with some uninteresting bad guys.

This new volume has a lot of the same problems the previous volumes have had, the character work is sub par and the ongoing narrative is just lacking. That said I think the first four issues that focus on the battle between Hala the Accuser and the Guardians is at least pretty entertaining and gorgeously illustrated by Schiti. If I was judging this volume just on that it might rank a little higher just based on the fun factor, but then the final issue rolls in and the entire narrative completely falls apart. I guess I'm supposed to be familiar with Yotat from the Secret Wars tie in series, but not having not read that series his appearance here comes off as completely pointless and uninteresting (to be fair that might have been the case regardless). After four issues of "Villain is out for revenge against the Guardians" why the hell do we need a tacked on issue with exactly the same premise? Add on the fact that Star Lord's curren status quo is then dismantled in all of a single page and you get a really terribly uninteresting and rushed issue propelling us into the next arc.

It's disappointing. I'd been hoping that with a stable art team in place (finally) Bendis would be able to right the ship on this series, and while Schiti's art is fantastic it still isn't enough to push this series beyond being pretty average. I wouldn't go so far as to call it outright bad, in fact there are parts of it I found very enjoyable, but Bendis is usually at his best when he's playing out a solid ongoing narrative and this series just isn't that.
