LOVE IS THE GREATEST RISK OF ALL
After multiple tours of duty, Brandon Forte returns to his hometown on a personal mission: to open a facility for military service dogs like Haydn, a German shepherd who's seen his share of combat and loss. It also brings him back to Sophie Kim, a beacon of light in his life . . . and the one woman he can't have. But Forte's success means he's made enemies in high places. Enemies who are now after Sophie . . .

When Forte enlisted and left without saying goodbye, Sophie did her best to move on. But with her first love back in town, looking sexier than ever, she's constantly reminded of what they could have had. Then after he risks himself for her, Sophie realizes she'll have to put her life in the hands of the man who broke her heart, knowing the danger -and the sparks between them- could consume them both.

Absolute Trust was a great addition to this series. We got to revisit past characters, but not in a way that they took away from the main characters story. Sophie and Forte really grabbed my attention and I loved getting to see them together. They were both well developed characters and I felt like we got to watch them grow as a couple. Their relationship was pretty slow, but it never lost my interest.

My 3.5 rating comes from the ending. I just never got that sense of completion once I was finished reading, and the story seemed like it wasn't finished. At least for me, I was looking for more to give me the feeling that the story was actually over.

I will still definitely recommend this book for romantic suspense lovers. Despite my feelings on the ending I did enjoy this book and think many others will too. It had a great romantic build up, a sexy Hero, and an adorable dog. What more could I ask for?

I love Sophie's personality. Never have I met someone so patient and loving to everyone and everything around her. I am glad her epiphany regarding her life came at a time when Brandon, too was finally facing his own truths and able to exercise some of his demons as well. Good story, as were the other two in this series. Looking forward to more from this author.

Brandon Forte has returned to his hometown and is running a training facility for military dogs, the Search and Protect Corporation. He is working alongside two other men previously in the military. Although he never makes it clear to her, the reason Brandon returned is to be close to Sophie Kim. They went to high school together and have remained good friends. Alienated since he joined the service, Brandon would like to become more than friends.

What Brandon doesn't know is that Sophie wants exactly the same thing. However, neither is prepared to be up front about it. Due to an explosion that almost took Sophie's life, Brandon becomes her protector, alongside his dog, Haydn. Haydn is in need of physical therapy as he had to have his front left leg replaced. Brandon's primary job is to rehabilitate Haydn.

The explosion was not an accident and Sophie's safety is in question, so Brandon and his team devise a plan. This is critical because while they try and decide who could be after Sophie, they cannot help to worry about the other women whose lives were previously threatened. Forced to now spend time together at this time gives both Brandon and Sophie the opportunity to tell each other how they feel.

Sophie has other major concerns. She has been all but forced to become an accountant to please her demanding family, but she has always had hopes of opening a bed and breakfast. If they won't let her live that dream, could they be the reason Brandon and Sophie didn't make it as a couple while in high school, then as adults?

This is a fast-paced story, filled with suspense and danger, as well as the budding romance developing between Sophie and Brandon. Her fears, the aftermath of Brandon's time in the service, and his reticence in believing he is the man Sophie needs and Haydn's rehab are all handled well during the pages of this engaging read. Also, readers cannot forget the cat that Sophie adopts. I have enjoyed the first two books of the series, and am reading the fourth. Piper J. Drake is an author to follow.

The other books in the True Heroes series are Extreme Honor, Ultimate Courage, Winter Valor (novella), Total Bravery, Fierce Justice and Forever Strong. Each book contains a separate story, with recurring characters, yet they do well as standalones.

She wasn’t just a childhood friend; she was his reason for breathing.

The third and last installment to the series and with a heavy heart I’m afraid to say my least favourite. This series without a doubt is fantastic and Ms. Drake has done a good job (not that she needs any validation on my part) in creating something so unique with each book. But this one just didn’t work for me.

Brandon & Sophie have been friends for years when they were teenagers they were more but that changed the day Brandon walked away without saying a word. After each tour he always came back to Sophie. But without ever saying anything about his true feelings for her. Years pass and they both still hold onto that friendship without moving forward they are stuck in a comfortable rut.

These two characters have been in the first two books and yet I still couldn’t get a feel for them. It was too fleeting and in this book it wasn’t much better. I didn’t see or really feel a connection between them in the book well to be honest nothing more than friends. Writing a story and getting the MC out of the friend zone can be quite tricky and here this what happened. It was hard to get them out of that zone. There isn’t a lot of chemistry between them but I could be oblivious to it has been known to happen. Blind as a bat and all that nonsense.

The heroine Sophie Kim is reliable, sensible, and responsible. To put it in plain English Sophie Kim is a bit of a dull girl. It improved somewhat throughout the book but I would have liked to have seen more of a change.

The Hero of the book well I really can’t tell you much about him. His feelings were clear but he put up so many roadblocks and so many things were left unsaid. There were obstacles where none where necessary.

The plot of the book is a good storyline to run with Sophie’s job as an accountant nearly gets her killed, yeah I know you would have thought huh? If it hadn’t been for Haydn the German Shephard then she would have been toast. Right place & right time and all that. This leads to several more dangerous incidents that occur that leads to contract being out there on her. Brandon whisks her away to protect her. But if there was such limited contact to the outside how did they find her? That would have been interesting to know. Yeah I get it probably just me and my idiocrasy that I want to know and no one else does.

This is a story of second chance romance reconnecting with the past and coming to terms with it and trying to move forward together. And in a way it is a cute read, mindboggling because I didn’t get some of heroine’s issue. A fear that he will leave again? Some things that I found to be of importance that added to the story or would have helped where briefly mentioned and well it was done and dusted.

Although they work through the hows and the whys of him leaving I still didn’t feel as if the outcome was what it was meant to be. There is such a big problem with the family and then we don’t see him being welcomed into the family I thought what is the reasoning behind the whole story.

Now all in all this is a good and strong read and I enjoyed it very much. Ms. Drake is talented and I enjoy her work and an author to watch out for. Maybe it is the trope of second chance romance or I was just not feeling it. Who knows? I know nothing.

I would recommend the series as it is a pleasure to read.

I wanted to love this story so badly. For the first time in my reading career, I’m delving into a contemporary romance featuring a Korean American heroine. For me, feels like a huge milestone. Unfortunately, although the author nails the heroine, the romance itself leaves me wanting more.

Sophie Kim is best friends with Brandon Forte and has been since childhood. For most of that time, she has been in love with him. However, after high school graduation, he enlists in the military and leaves her without an explanation or a good bye. Now he is back and establishes Hope’s Crossing Kennels, a first-class training facility specializing in military and law enforcement dogs. They are back to being friends but neither is brave enough to confront why he left in the first place. In the backdrop of the romance is a threat posed by a shadow black ops organization that is targeting the people associated with Hope’s Crossing. First established in book one, Extreme Honor, they have Sophie in their cross hairs. This menace prompts Brandon to take action to protect her and finally makes him face his true feelings.

The best part of this book for me is Sophie’s characterization. Piper Drake accurately describes my own experience growing up as a Korean American immigrant. Being Korean American is relevant to the story, not just a one-dimensional detail. Sophie lives under the heavy weight of her family’s expectations. Although she struggles under their assumptions of success by becoming an accountant, she longs to follow her own passions to open a bed and breakfast. She wants to be a good daughter, but also wants to live her own life as well. Up until now, she allows others to dictate her choices, including her relationship with Brandon.

The author also does a great job of picking up the little details that makes Sophie’s Korean American experience. I relate to the pride Sophie has for sharing her food, the long handled spoons, and the always-available hot water from her hot pot. Sharing Korean food is particularly meaningful to me. As a kid, I did not often invite my friends over to my house for dinner because Korean food is very aromatic and after several negative interactions and comments, I just avoided the whole issue. Instead of a source of pride, it became a source of embarrassment and shame. It tickles me pink to know that now people from all backgrounds seek out Korean restaurants and grocery stores. Although it is still not conventional, I love that there is an appreciation for sundubu jiggae (tofu stew) and tteokguk (rice cake soup).

I wish there could have been more interactions with the parents. Unfortunately, Sophie’s family is out of town during the time of the story and we do not get first hand interactions with them. We only learn about the family dynamics through flashbacks. Considering how much their expectations have set the course of Sophie’s life, I think this is a missed opportunity.

While Sophie’s story is spot on, her romance with Brandon is a bit of a miss. I love Brandon. I love how Brandon cares for Sophie. I love that he comes to her house while she is rehabilitating and cooks her a meal. However, I do not feel the chemistry between them. Yes, they both care deeply for one another and there is a hint of a Romeo and Juliet sentiment to their story. However, because of their history, there is an assumption that we understand the depths of their attachment to one another. This a challenge with all second-chance love stories. There needs to be enough of the couple’s history to establish the deep attraction that propels it to the present. I missed that in this book.

There is a lot to like about this story – good friends, good times, and moments of high suspense. The individual characters are admirable and relatable, but I want so much more from the romance. Instead, I will remember this book for Sophie’s story – for making this immigrant’s story a little more mainstream.

Having loved the previous two books in this series I grabbed the chance to read this one and, not surprisingly, found it to be another enthralling page turner. I don't think you'd have to read the first two to appreciate and enjoy this one, though they do follow on from each other. The characters are well developed - and that includes the canine and feline as well as human ones.

Brandon Forte returned to his hometown after leaving the military. He has set up a training facility for military service dogs, Hope Crossing Kennels, running it with two other ex-military men (the romances of whom feature in the first two novels in this series). Needless to say, their canine charges are also stars in the stories! Brandon's main reason for returning to his hometown is Sophie Kim. They've known each other since high school and are friends but both would like to be more - though they haven't told the other one that. The action packed story starts explosively and continues in a fast paced, action packed thriller as Brandon and his team try to protect Sophie from repeated attacks, strive to determine why she is the target and keep her safe.

This is another suspense filled romance from this talented author whose personal knowledge of owning and training retired working dogs is a key element in the stories. As usual when I read her books, I really didn't want to put it down! I have no hesitation in highly recommending this to anyone who enjoys well crafted, suspense filled, covert action packed novels with alpha males (human and canine) and feisty females in danger with a canine military dog playing an important role, too!

I was gifted a copy of this, without obligation, via NetGalley. This is my honest review.

I ended up stopping at pg. 124 around 38% in.

This is the first time I've read Ms. Drake and a book in the True Heroes series. Their are previous characters around, ones that are couples now and friends to our leads, and so I'm missing out on the connections. I don't feel the camaraderie or friendships like I might if I read the books in order.

As for Absolute Trust everything feels slow. The plot is slow and the romance is nonexistent. Even with them both having torches for each other since high school. I'm just not feeling the the chemistry and romance.

Up to this point no action has happened. We've had a car booming and an attempted apartment burglary/try to kill our heroine, but it wasn't action associated, just things that happened to our leads, then we move on.

I'm not sure if I'll try reading this again. I do have book one on request at my library and maybe I'll pick up Absolute Trust again after I try out the previous books published.

This was a case of the right book at the right time for me. I really needed a straightforward romance suspense, and with its terrific combination of hot romance and nail-biting tension, Absolute Trust completely filled that need.

With a tiny bit of quibble at the very end. We’ll get there.

The story is all about Sophie and Brandon (and Haydn and Tessa) and getting out of the “friend zone” and moving towards the future. If everyone survives, that is.

Brandon and Sophie were friends in high school. And they are friends now. In the middle, there was a giant rough spot that Brandon wants to paper over and Sophie needs to just get over. But first she has to know what happened way back then.

Sophie has always loved Brandon. And seemingly vice-versa. But Brandon never believed he was good enough for Sophie, and her father certainly agreed with that assessment. So instead of sticking around and pursuing a relationship, Brandon joined the military the night of their high school prom.

Sophie never even got to say goodbye. And she never got over him. She also never managed to get past that her first lover dumped her without a word, turning all the dreams they shared that one night into dust. Brandon may have bravely run into the fight, but he also rather cowardly ran away from Sophie.

Brandon comes home after his deployments, and opens Hope’s Crossing Kennels. And Sophie steps up to be his friend, because that’s all she believes they can ever have. And she believes it’s worth staying in the “friend zone” just to keep Brandon in her life.

Until someone plants a bomb under her car, and she barely escapes certain death through sheer luck. Brandon just happened to be out walking Haydn, a new “recruit” at the Kennels. The big German Shepherd dog has a prosthetic leg, and a nose for sniffing out explosives. It’s Haydn’s alert that saves all their lives.

And plunges Sophie’s entire world into chaos, leaving her with her life in tatters and only Brandon to hang onto. Hiding from Sophie’s would-be killers, on the run for their lives, Brandon and Sophie finally manage to open all the cans of worms they’ve been stepping around for years.

Once all the baggage is finally dropped, can they have a future together? Do they have a future at all?

Escape Rating B: I picked up Absolute Trust after I discovered that Piper J. Drake is also PJ Schnyder. I loved her science fiction romance series, both London Undead and The Triton Experiment, so I was thrilled to see that she was still writing in a different space.

From her SFR, I knew she was good at mixing romance with suspense. The worlds of both series are not exactly safe or sane. And that she was good at throwing her hero and heroine together in the midst of life-threatening danger.

So it proves in Absolute Trust. Whatever they were before, the relationship between Brandon and Sophie in this story has to survive a crucible of fire, as do they. And whatever baggage they have hanging around, and it’s a ton. They also have to figure out if they have a chance as the people they are now. Brandon in particular has been tried by fire, under fire, and the compartmentalization necessary to be a military operative is still very much a part of him. He is scared, and rightfully so, that the deadly side of his nature might frighten Sophie away.

But because he has managed to paper over all the issues that made him leave Sophie the first time, he has difficulty understanding that the biggest problems between them aren’t in the present, but in the past. He left her once without a word. How can she ever trust that he won’t do it again?

Absolute Trust is the third book in the author’s True Heroes series. Although this is the first book in the series that I have read, I did not feel lost at all. The previous heroes and heroines appear just enough to provide a sense of continuity and the feel of a working community, without being so much a part of the story that the reader needs more than the background provided. This story isn’t about the past of the group, it’s about the past between Brandon and Sophie, and that’s all here.

I also liked Brandon and Sophie as the hero and heroine quite a bit. Absolute Trust is a twist on the friends-into-lovers trope, and its done well. The very real dilemma of whether it is worth risking their solid friendship to grab for more is handled well on both sides. As is Sophie’s intense realization that she has been taking the easy, non-conflict path her entire life, instead of doing the hard work of sticking up for what she truly wants. I loved the way she figured out that she needed to make some serious changes, whether or not Brandon remained a part of her life.

Something I particularly enjoyed about this story is that the danger to Sophie was caused by her work. She didn’t have a stalker or a vicious ex. She wasn’t a victim in need of a rescue. Her difficulties were the result of her own actions rather than her inactions, in spite of the fact that her epiphany about her life did have to do with taking a too easy path. There are too many suspense stories where men become endangered because they did something, where women become endangered merely because they are women. I liked this trip to the danger zone much better.

The one issue I had with Absolute Trust is that it didn’t quite stick the dismount. The story is completely absorbing from beginning to end, but it doesn’t seem to end with complete resolution. Sophie and Brandon are still trying to work things out. They need a bit more time for the ending to feel like an HEA. At the same time the bad guys that they are fighting against don’t seem unequivocally gone. Probably gone, but not quite certain. If there is a fourth book in the series I hope that some of these issues get resolved.

Haydn and Tessa were the secondary stars of this show, and provided heroism and comic relief at the appropriate moments. As a tiny feline, Tessa seems to just embody “cat”. Brandon’s description of her pointedly washing ALL her bits right in front of him as the equivalent of a cat giving him the finger was perfectly hilarious. Also perfectly true.

Dog lovers, this is the book for you. Suspense, romance and loyal dogs to the rescue! This is the third in the series and can be read as a standalone. It is easy to be drawn into this world of retired military men, trying to make the world a better place, one dog at a time.

From the start of the book, it is explosive, literally. Starting from the explosion, this book moves at a fast pace. The tie in with the Brandon's company and his ability to help a friend out is well done. It sucks a reader in and keeps them locked into the storyline. Brandon is back home after being on tour for so long. This time, he's finally back to stay. He is also looking forward to renewing his friendship with Sophie Kim. Sophie is the girl he let go. He wanted her but knew that she deserved better. This is how he thought. Sophie on the other hand wants to know why she isn't good enough to keep him.

The characters in this story are fun and engaging. I loved that Sophie is Korean. I wasn't expecting this when I picked up the book because I honestly didn't read the blurb. All I saw was German Shepherd and I picked it up on a lark. This book pulled me in with the character development. The little nuances of being a single Korean female were spot on. Having an older Korean neighbor checking up on Sophie is so realistic. What is a bit funny and not so realistic were the comments on how Sophie can catch her sexy man, Brandon. Her elderly neighbor is oh so helpful.

The plot in this story is well done. There are no real surprises even if Ms. Drake tries to throw the reader off with a couple of red herrings. It is clear to me from the very beginning who the aggressor is in the book. The ending is not a surprise at all. What is nice, is the little twists and turns to arrive to this ending. I liked how Ms. Drake tied in a few threads to make this a more complicated storyline. This includes the romantic element that is frustrating yet sweet.

Brandon keeps trying to do what he thinks is best for Sophie. This is frustrating because he thinks he is reading her right and he is not. Communicate, serious, just talk to Sophie. I felt bad for Sophie at one point because I wanted to scream too and hit Brandon. Sophie's patience with Brandon is more than I could ever do. When the two finally burn up the sheets, it is sweet. The sex is a little more than vanilla which could categorize this story as erotic for some. For a jaded sex addict like me, the chemistry and sex between Brandon and Sophie is sweetly romance. This romantic suspense is recommended for readers who enjoy military men, loyal trusty dogs and happily ever afters.

ARC REVIEW

Jumping into the True Heroes series in book three, never read the first two and now I want to. It's fine as a stand-alone but if feel like I missed out on some good sexual tension between Brandon and Sophie.
This was a great story, it started with a bang, really a car exploded. Not only is the sexual tension great but the action and suspense build it's own tension that holds it's own. It was an exciting story that captured my attention and kept it.

Brandon and Sophie have known each other for most of their lives. They dated in high school but then abruptly Brandon joins the military, without a word he's gone. Over the years though they have remained friends even though they both long for something more but unsure of how the other feels and for reason of their own have avoided any meaningful relationships. Brandon came back changed, more closed off and serious with one goal in mind to operate a rehab and training facility for retired military dogs. Sophie has lived the life her father has wasn't her to live and as much as she loves numbers she has been rethinking her whole life's plan especially since something funny is going on at work. Brandon and Sophie reconnected when he got back but both were determined to stay friends. That all changes when Sophie's car explodes almost killing her, if Brandon's medically discharged german shepherd, Hayden, who he's been training and rehabilitating hadn't detected the explosive device in the car it would have killed her. Hayden is a special dog he lost part of a front leg in an IED explosion and Brandon is working his physical therapy and training him to walk on a prosthetic leg. Brandon assumes that Sophie has been targeted by some of his enemies, Brandon and his two friends who also work for Hope's Crossing Kennels start to follow any lead that could tell them who was responsible.

The car bomb scared Brandon enough that he vows to protect Sophie no matter what, but all the time together is wearing on their resistance. They are opening up about the past and what happened after graduation and about how they really feel but can't act on it. But eventually they do. And it turns out the car bombing was just the start and that it was just the opening Brandon's enemies needed to track him down, so they are not just dealing with one badie out there and Brandon will lay down his life if he has to to protect the woman he has loved all his life.

Overall, it was a great story. I want to go back and read the first two.

Good second chance/friends to lovers story with some excellent suspense to go along with it. Brandon and Sophie had known each other since they were in school, becoming more than friends when they were in high school. But after graduation, Brandon left for the military without a word to Sophie, not even a goodbye, breaking her heart. When he left the military, he came back to Hope's Crossing to open a training facility for military dogs. And right back to Sophie, who has been his anchor, even if she didn't know it.

When Brandon left, Sophie went on with her life. She went to school, got a good job, everything to live up to her parents' expectations. But she drew the line at settling down with one of the "nice boys" that her parents pushed at her. When Brandon came back to town, they slid right back into their old friends routine.

It is clear to everyone that there is still something there between Brandon and Sophie, but neither one can see it in the other. Brandon loves Sophie and always has, but has never felt good enough for her. This feeling was reinforced when he was a teenager by Sophie's parents' attitude toward him. The things that happened during the war only added to his need to keep his darker side away from her. Sophie has always loved Brandon, in spite of her parents' feelings about him. With Brandon back in town, she will try to content herself with friendship, but she really wants more.

I liked the development of the relationship between Brandon and Sophie. Because they've known each other for so long, there aren't many secrets, yet it is still a journey of discovery for them. Alone together in a place where Brandon hopes to keep her safe, both are forced to face their feelings about themselves and each other. No more hiding behind the façade of friendship. I loved seeing Brandon's protectiveness after the car bomb, and the depth of caring he showed as he took care of Sophie. I especially loved the scene with the cat café, as it showed how well he knows her. When they reached their cabin hideout, the heat between them really kicked in. Though Brandon tried to hold back, Sophie had had enough and went after what she wanted. I also liked the fact that she also took a hard look at her life and saw that she had just been going with the flow and took steps to change it. I really liked how one of the first things she did was demand answers from Brandon about why he had left her. I ached a bit for Brandon, as he admitted his insecurities to her, and how they had driven him to make the choices he had made. He still feels that he isn't good enough for her, but he's reached the point that he is going after what he wants anyway. I loved the ending, as both Brandon and Sophie admitted their mistakes and took that final leap of faith.

The suspense of the story was really good. The car bomb was a real attention getter, especially since the only thing that saved Sophie was the chance meeting with Brandon and Haydn. From there, the race was on to see if Brandon and the others could find out the who and why before it was too late. There were several possibilities, from someone trying to get to Brandon by using Sophie to some potential funny business going on at Sophie's workplace. I enjoyed the buildup to the confrontation at the cabin and seeing the steps Brandon went through to keep Sophie safe. The confrontation was a nail-biter to the end. I especially liked seeing Sophie's active participation rather than just waiting for rescue. At the end of the confrontation, there were still some unanswered questions. I loved Brandon's effort to get answers to those questions. There were some unexpected connections that became clear, as well as an unusual hero who helped get those answers.

Two of my favorite characters were the dog, Haydn, and the cat, Tessa. I loved how Brandon and the crew at Hope's Crossing Kennels gave Haydn a new purpose after the loss of his leg and his handler during the war. From the moment he alerted on the explosives in Sophie's car, I could see his determination and his enthusiasm for what he was doing. I was not at all surprised by his participation in Sophie's rescue. I also loved how it was him and the dogs from the previous books who gave Brandon ideas and motivations for the future of the kennels. I also adored the kitten, Tessa. Her rough start in life tugged at Sophie's heartstrings, leading to her adoption. It was amusing to see her reactions to Haydn, and his to her. I was a bit surprised that Brandon and Sophie took her along to the cabin, considering what they expected to happen. Probably the funniest moment with her was her encounter with Raul Sa after the cabin incident.

Speaking of Raul Sa, I was very happy to discover that this is not the last book in the series. Raul's presence in this book, and his need for a working dog, is the lead-in to the next book. I liked what I saw of Raul and am looking forward to reading his book.

It was hard not to get sucked into this one right away. From previous books you knew that Brandon and Sophia had a past, but we didn't know exactly what. Yes we did learn it, but it seemed to take too long and ended up being a bit anti-climatic. I did like how both of them created a new relationship amid the chaos, loved that Brandon didn't make the same mistake, but this time let Sophia make a choice.

When the team got to the bottom of the trouble that surrounded Sophia it was so mundane, just crazy people taking too far of steps to cover up their sneakiness.

I hope this series continues, that the plans that Brandon talked about happen. Would love to see the Kennel expand and others find their home there.

This book was my absolute favorite of the series so far. Brandon and Sophie have so much between them, the tension and past and the life experiences they have. It is one delicious The One That Got Away second chances romance, burning slow and bright, all enhanced by the extreme danger they are in.

I loved the mystery not only because it worked well on its own, but because so many plot twists from the first two books wind their way into the story naturally and in a way that made the story *more* instead of distracting the reader from what is going on. It was a fast-paced, intriguing book I couldn’t put down. Mystery, romance and the set of characters forming the formidable group of found family, all of it together made this work perfectly for me.

REVIEW: ABSOLUTE TRUST is the third installment in Piper J. Drake’s contemporary, adult TRUE HEROES romantic, suspense series. This is US Army veteran Brandon Forte, and accountant Sophie Kim’s story line. ABSOLUTE TRUST can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspective (Brandon and Sophie) ABSOLUTE TRUST is a friends to lovers/ second chance story line. Years earlier Brandon walked out of Sophie’s life without explanation only to return hoping to renew their friendship and trust. Brandon owns and works at Hope’s Crossing Kennel retraining military and combat dogs whose previous service have left the canine companions without direction, or suffering from the loss of a previous partner. When Sophie is targeted by an unknown source, Brandon takes responsibility for the woman that he has never stopped loving-a woman whose life he will protect with his own. What ensues is the rekindling of a friendship that turns to love as Brandon and his team struggle to stay one step ahead of the people trying to destroy Sophie’s life.

The relationship between Brandon and Sophie is rife with tangible sexual attraction but an attraction that neither one is willing to admit. Brandon broke Sophie’s heart years earlier, and our heroine battles with her desire for a man who is unwilling to take their friendship to the next level. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of graphic, erotic language or text.

All of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting roles: David Cruz and Lyn Jones (Extreme Honor #1); Alex Rojas and Elisa Hall (Ultimate Courage #2). We are introduced to police officer Kymani Graves; Army veteran Raul Sa who currently works for a private military contract organization; as well as a Haydn, a former, military dog who lost not only his previous controller but his front leg as well.

The world building continues to focus on the Hope’s Crossing Kennel, and the work of the members training former military dogs for civilian life, as well as the potential for dogs working with soldiers suffering from PTSD. ABSOLUTE TRUST focuses on the threats against, and attempts on Sophie Kim’s life; and the search for the people responsible and why, as well as the revelation behind the reason Brandon walked away from the woman that he loved.

ABSOLUTE TRUST is a romantic suspense story with a little bit of military background and history. The premise is spirited and gripping; the characters are colorful and animated; the romance is heartwarming and inspiring. With the addition of combat experienced military dogs the warm fuzzies add to the romantic overtone.

I have to say I liked the willpower Brandon seemed to possess, “Sophie.” His voice had gone husky. “I promise I’ll cuddle with you after you have a chance to eat, but if you keep doing that I’m going to forget I wanted to make sure you got breakfast.” I loved Brandon, he was sexy, sweet, and caring.

I've been really enjoying this series. Before I started this series I wasn't very much into romantic suspense any more but when Extreme Honor was picked for my Book Club Thursday book review post I kinda had no choice but to try her.

I'm so glad that I did. Since the first book I've been hooked! I found that Drake writes wonderful stories that suck you in and keep you there until you finish. I also love her hero's. There is something about them. You just know they will always be there for you.

Plus...they are so HOT!!!!

I'm just saying! We have finally come to Brandon's story. Throughout the first two books in the series he was there but you kinda didn't get to know him that much. In fact, you wanted to know more about him because of that fact alone.

He was a mystery!

The only idea you had was that he was close to Sophie. Now Sophie was a open book since the beginning. She just let everyone see...her! I really liked that about her. Brandon needed someone open and loving to show him how much value he has.

Pretty much from the start of this story you won't be able to put it down. It moves very quickly. I really love that in a book. As a whole the story was wonderful and well worth reading! In fact, the whole series is well worth reading!

I think the only negative I could say about the series is that until this story I didn't really feel like the character (all of them) really came together. Small potatoes, right? I would read the series in order because it just makes it much better. I can't wait to see what's next!

Enjoyed the beginning of this book and it moved along nicely until just after the middle where I felt the momentum just stopped. It became boring for me and I had a hard time staying interested. For me, it turned to "bleh" when the H/h went to the cabin.

Enjoyed the dog and cat interaction in the book. I felt that the H/h connection was off a bit. There was one intimate scene and it was just tossed into the story. No build up. It was crazy because while the couple was inside the cabin having sex, I was thinking what about the animals that were still outside? The cat was still in the cat carrier from a long trip and the author chose that time to have the H/h have sex. Go figure. Nothing else the rest of the book. I felt the couple was missing an important connection in the lack of communication that went on while they were in the cabin, too.

There were some other odd things in the book that stood out for me, too. All the tea details was probably useless filler and the girl's interactions seemed off as well. A few odd things while one of the several trips to the ER as well.

Sophie and Forte are finally forced to confront the thing everyone around them has seen since book 1. They might try to dance around it and say they're just friends, but...nope. They have some chemistry and a brush with danger puts it all out in the open.

And by "brush" I mean an explosion that endangers Sophie. Which, as you can imagine, puts Forte and the rest of the Hope's Crossing team on edge.

But nothing's easy when your heart is on the line and Sophie and Forte have a past. A PAST. The type of past that they try to ignore, but it sort of lingers between them. Dealing with their baggage is one of their roadblocks. You know, besides the whole "Sophie almost blew up" thing.

There's danger and 'splosions and sexy times and heartache and one cool cat. Or, well, a slightly agitated cat that calms down beautifully when she finds her human. Animals, man. They make me smile.

We get to revisit previous couples (as you'd expect given the couples in question live at Hope's Crossing) and see how they're faring. We get a dog who performs admirably despite his physical limitations. We get to finally see Sophie and Forte cross that self-proclaimed friendship line. *thumbs up*

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, pain, and heartbreak.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Extreme Honor (True Heroes #1)
Ultimate Courage (True Heroes #2)

This is Sophie and Brandon’s story. Sophie and Brandon have a past where they were together. But when he came back from his tours he was only offering friendship. Now they have settled in that relationship even if it’s not what they both want. Having that is better than nothing. But when Sophie is in danger and he almost loses her forever he knows he needs to step up and protect her and also fight for the love they both have for each other. Can he put aside his fears and claim her as his own? Can he figure out who is out to hurt her? Does it have to do with him or something she accidentally got herself involved in? Can Sophie allow him to claim her for his own? What happens if she has to let him go again? Or will the danger that is out to get her find her before they can figure out there future?

I loved these characters and also the side characters. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

REVIEW:
What a fun wild ride with Brandon and Sophie. The story was fast paced and exciting, while still leaving plenty of time for them to rekindle their old relationship. I liked them both even though they each did or felt something hairbrained. Brandon held on to something said to him in his teens, when he should have let that go now that he was an adult. Then Sophie was too blasé after something that happened. Those two things made me pause. It did not detract from the story though. Sexy, scary and a real page-turner.

In Piper Drake's Absolute Trust, the third installment in the True Heroes romantic suspense series, hold onto your hats for an action-packed novel. Brandon Forte and Sophie Kim had been friends and former sweethearts in high school, before he left for the military. Now since he's retired and works for Hope's Crossing Kennels, an animal clinic outfitted to train dogs who fought in the war with their handlers. And Haydn, a beloved German Shepherd with a prosthetic leg, had been trained in the kennel. It all started when Sophie's car bombed and injured her ankle in the process. From there, it was all systems go, when Brandon protected her and was on a hunt for the perps who did this to her. When Sophie was let go from her job, something was up, especially when a certain mercenary organization him to request his services. While Brandon and his team look for clues on who wanted to do this to her, Sophie and Brandon grew closer to confide in each other about how they felt for each other, then and now. As soon as he put his life on the line for her, he would do anything for her to catch the perp and bring them down, one way or another, just to be with her and her life.

I knew I had to read Absolute Trust because 1. I love romantic suspense 2. dogs!! and 3. diverse characters!

The story starts with a bang—quite literally—as Sophie Kim’s world is plunged into chaos when her car explodes in the middle of a parking lot. Someone has their crosshair on her and she soon finds herself on the run with her long-time friend, Brandon Forte.

Forte has loved Sophie since high school but didn’t feel like he deserved her, so he left without a word and joined the military. Years later, he’s back running a facility for military service dogs. When Sophie’s life is threatened, Forte is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her.

I really enjoyed this friends-to-lovers romantic suspense. Absolute Trust had me hooked from the beginning to end with the explosive action and nail-biting tension. A relatable heroine, a brave dog, and a swoony hero—what more could I ask for?

From the onset of the story, I felt an instant connection to the characters. The author did a remarkable job of creating them with the depth necessary for the connection to be made so quickly. The interaction between the characters was smooth and flawless, as was the flow of the story.

The story built slowly, as was necessary with so much background to cover, but once the action started it was fast paced and intense. Having the animals interact in the story brought moments of levity that were necessary to break up the intense moments. The slow build of Brandon and Sophie's relationship was done with the perfect momentum, the build up perfect. Not having read the books prior to this one, I never felt lost in the backstory, but do want to go back and catch up on the other characters' stories.

Initial Thoughts: I've waited for Brandon and Sophie's story since their chemistry was hinted at in the first book. I wan't disappointed in the passion and commitment between them. Their strong friendship and Sophie's giving nature was a great compliment to Brandon's devotion and protectiveness. I loved Hadyn, the GSD (German Sheppard Dog). The theme of second chances was strong in this one and I really liked it. Though I felt there was an odd section that I'm still mulling over. Overall I liked it and wonder what might be next in this world or in the worlds of Ms. Drake. Though I'd not read the earlier books in this series (and I will go back and indulge in them), I had no problem following this story. Loved Drake's characters, one of the main things that made this such a fun read. The other- the pacing-OMG, I felt like I was driving on black ice and had to keep stopping and flexing my fingers as I was clutching my Kindle so tight, my fingers would not let loose. I just love a story that has me clinging on for dear life. I've just started listening to audiobooks and this series if narrated by a strong voice would be awesome to listen to while driving.
