Rebel Threads: Vintage Streetwear

Rate this book
The Contemporary Wardrobe Collection is the most comprehensive collection of street clothing in the world, regularly used in movies and music videos. With more than 15,000 garments, designed since the 1930s, the collection covers a multitude of cult fashions from zoot suiters, to mods to new romantics, and has dressed everyone from David Bowie to Kanye West.

Rebel Threads showcases some of the most iconic styles in this amazing Aladdin's cave of street fashion, takes us up close to the garments in detailed shots and recounts the most fascinating stories attached to the items – anecdotes involving famous trendsetters of the time or actors who donned the outfits on screen.

It is the only book to document subcultural fashion in such detail and as such is sure to become a must-have for fans of vintage clothing, collectors, fashion students, and costumiers.

Burton is an eminent fashion stylist, costumer, and curator of subcultural fashion whose personal collection of vintage and replica fashion pieces form the heart of this beautifully produced coffee-table book. There are ten chapters, each of about 25-30 heavily illustrated pages on the following ten subcultural styles, proceeding chronologically:

- Swing Kids / Hep Cats / Bobby Soxers
- Spivs / Wide Boys
- Teddy Boys
- Rockers / Bikers
- Beats / Beatniks
- Mods
- Dandies
- Hippies
- Skinheads
- Punks

Each chapter features a number of carefully styled photos of the fashion on discreet, headless mannequins, supplemented with archival photos and stills from films. The text provides brief social and economic context for the rise and inspirations for each style. Layout and typography are very clean and classic, in keeping with the rest of the production. Not the be missed in the back is a 20-25 book list of "Further Reading" and 50 films for "Further Viewing," All in all, a beautiful tribute to British subcultural styles.
